The NAACP threat against Butters is nothing more than the threat from a gnat after his selection at the SL County Convention. A democrat's chances in South Jordan and West Jordan is nearly zero.
I thought... | 9:00 p.m. May 3, 2008
...that republicans were "embarassed" by this man? That he was a blemish to them.
So full of it, aren't they?

James Evans' comments about biased reporting in the media are largely correct, although this story seems to be pretty straightforward news reporting. Well done to the reporter who did it!
Now if the editorial page folks would go out and embrace some diversity of opinion instead of the universal Journalist liberal bias, the Deseret News would be a much better paper. (The Tribune is hopeless!)

How unfortunate that the Republicans don't get it. They have an opportunity to demonstrate that they are not the party of bias, special interests and the 'good old boy' network and what do they do? Prove that is exactly what they are. If the 'folks' return power to the Republicans, even in that bastion of conservativism of South Jordan we can forget about government 'by the people and for the people' and resign ourselves to government by anything but the people. If that happens expect more voucher legislation, more omnibus bills, more secret deals and no ethics reform. Heck, why do we need ethics reform? Can't we just trust all these Republicans to do what they think is best for us poor ignorant citizens who have no business in medling in politcs? This is truly a sad day for Utah politics.

MadMax seems to forget that the Democrats are also a party of bias, special interest with a 'good old boy (and now girl)' network. For example, the Democratic party tends to be anti-religion (unless it is nature worship) and heavily panders to the union bosses, the NAACP, and the AARP (to name just a few). Some of our local democrats were at the top of the list of those being "wined and dined" by lobbyists.
Both parties have problems. Don't think one is better than the other. They both focus on money and power.

This goes to show how riduculous the caucus system is in Utah. If the vote was put to the general public, even in West/South Jordan where I live, Butters would lose handily. The caucus meetings brings out the extreme right (and left). LaVar Christensen is also an embarrasment and slap in the face to the moderate Republicans. As a lifelong Republican, voting in Butters and Christensen, and the other questionable activities of Bramble, Curtis, Stevenson, etc., has put me over over the edge. I will actively support the Democratic opponents.

Terrible decision to pass the nomination to Buttars at the convention. A primary between Buttars and Gary Armstrong would have been in the best interest of everyone in the district. Now, the choice is either Buttars or a Democrat. I am not a Democrat, but there is no way I can support Buttars. He has done nothing for the district but bring shame and ridicule to all Utah Republicans. While I can understand how people are busy enough in their own lives and have little time and energy for state party politics, it is a shame that those who are active in the system seem to be so out-of-step with what I think most of my neighbors think about the issues. Maybe Buttars receiving the nomination from the party "elites" in such direct opposition to the will of the collective voting public will be the kick in the pants many of us need to pay more attention to our local politics. This may also provide many of us, like John who posted, a reason to examine our voting practices and realize that a strong two-party system is something that has been unfortunately lacking in Utah. Anyone but Buttars.

The thing about Buttars...
Even disregarding what a fool he makes of himself and the party with the idiotic things he can't help but say, he is simply not a good representative of the district. He hasn't done anything of note to support and promote the issues that most of us in the district care about. Giving him a pass on being an idiot, like the delegates did, would be at least defensible if he were a legislative genius who was single-handedly conquering all of our challenges, but he isn't. Apparently, the only thing he is good at in his position is either sweet-talking or bullying the delegates and party leadership to ensure his political survival. I defy any of the delegates to provide a sound defense of their vote to support Buttars based on an explanation of what good his re-election could possibly produce for the district.

Like Bush nationally, Utah picked the best the Republican Party had to offer.

A little advice to those legislators who stood with Sylvia during her speech. Let me preface by saying I like all of you, I support your good works in the legislature, I recognize your positive accomplishments for our State; however, this kind of behavior is exactly the type of thing that irritates delegates and citizens. Sometimes you are your own worst enemies when it comes to how you are perceived. Your actions make you appear arrogant and manipulative. Support the fact that the process works best when people step up to the plate and throw their hat in the ring. Don't discourage that important aspect of representative government by throwing your weight around. It obviously didn't work and possibly made things worse for the incumbent.

Too much Bernick. Too little information.
