Boy, that will be a great game. The 5th place MWC team playing in Utah in December. A veritable ratings bonanza.

perhaps it was rejected after reading the opinions of those from the mwc on this post when the idea was first floated, or rather sunk on these pages

OK, I'm going to hold a press conference on Friday at noon, to announce that I and my backers are going to propose to the NCAA that the BCS vs Mid-major national championship game will be played in the new, Way-To Many Bowl, sponsored by Jones Paint and Glass. The game will be played on the same weekend as the Super Bowl. Our facility will be the Allen Food Market Dome, which when build will feature 89,000 chair seats, each one with great sight-lines.
We will begin taking bids for the stadium this summer and expect NCAA approval and the completion of our stadium by fall, 2010.
Please plan on attending the press conference which will be held at the Harmon Conference Center on the BYU campus.
Hey, if any kook can come up with a plan that can't work and get instant credibility and exposure, why can't poor old SJ?

Would anybody seriously want to pay $50 to see a couple no-name teams from the MWC and WAC?

BRRRRRRRR! That would be a cold game.

Where are the Utes going to play now?

I think Gilliland used the right term when he said "we'll try to FLUSH out what our options are..." They should flush a bowl in SLC in December until they put a roof on Rice-Eccles, which ain't gonna happen.

Rather than get another bowl throw you money into creating a NCAA playoff that includes everyone but BS...er I mean BCS teams.

So not only is this a battle of mid-majors (always a popular draw) its a battle of the also-ran's in said mid-major. Oh and to top it off? Its in Salt Lake City in the middle of December! Why waste your money on going where it is warm for a bowl game? Come one, come all! Salt Lake City in winter isn't just for the Olypmics anymore!
Whoever the genius was that thought this up should run for public office...at least there they could do less harm.

If Boise can host a bowl game in December, why not Salt Lake?

So Navy has a guaranteed spot in the "Congressional Bowl"? Navy's had some good teams in recent years, but creating a bowl tied to that team specifically seems a bit much. Go back about ten years and they were doing well to win 3 or 4 games in a season.

Utes will probably be in Phoenix thank you very much.

This is great news. There is some common sense in College Football.

Why don't we see if we can't get all D-1 football teams in a bowl game?
Why don't you quit wasting the fans time and money with more bowl games and start giving fans what they really want...a playoff system!
Seriously!!!!!!!!!!!Focus more on tearing down the BCS System rather than creating a bowl game that only pays $750k and loses money for the teams that attend.

First off the "Congressional Bowl" is an automatic bid for NAVY provided they win 6 games, the minimum you have to win to BE BOWL ELIGIBLE, or a "At Large" team fills the vacancy, they can't go 0-12 and then go to a bowl game! Secondly, isn't that just what we need, more college bowl games when they can't fill the stadiums for the rinky dink "Bowl Games" they have now ie: Meineke Car Car Bowl, Papa John's Pizza Bowl, Houston Bowl, 2,000 Flushes Clean Smelling Toilet Bowl Bowl, Give it a rest! I am about the biggest NCAA Football fan your going to find, but watching the Mobile Alabama Bowl in December with 8,000 fans in the stands on TV is disappointing to me. I would rather watch a Division II Playoff game, or whatever they call Division II now to make it sound MORE POLITICALLY CORRECT than "Division II or Sub-Division I (Second Tier College Football)". Grambling State vs Jackson State marching bands at half time are more exciting than some of these games! Then you get Notre Dame, 6-6 and they get a BCS New Years Day Game bid practically every time, go figure?

All I can say is thank goodness that they didn't approve it.
BCS hater | 11:26 a.m. May 1, 2008
I'm not surprised that 2 more bowls in the east get approved but another bowl for the MWC and WAC gets denied. The monopoly only works if they keep knocking down every attempt at more exposure for teams that deserve better.

At least somebody at the NCAA was listening to the local input against a dumb idea.
I Betcha | 12:56 p.m. May 1, 2008
that the NCAA is holding out for a Bowl game to be played in LaVell Edwards Stadium. It would be a ratings and financial boon !! You have to know the NCAA officials are aware the if you live your life right and do what you are supposed to "Magic happens" on the field in Provo !!

Actually a bowl game in a winter sports capitol is not a bad idea (I would rather be in Salt Lake than Memphis or Detroit), but the kind of lets-bad-mouth-ourselves attitude diplayed here shows where the real problem with the conceptlies
It can't be worse | 4:05 p.m. May 1, 2008
Division I football is actually 2 divisions - BCS and non-BCS.
The non-BCS schools should have their own tournament. Most non-BCS bowl elgible teams either lose money or barely break even on their bowl game. I betcha a tournament would be a money maker and better ratings than a lot of the non-New Years day bowls that have BCS teams against each other.
Id much rather watch BYU in a tournament against the best of the WAC, Conf-USA and MAC than to get lucky against a 6th place Pac 10 team.

isn't it interesting | 4:19 p.m. May 1, 2008
that the BCS approved bowl games for major conferences, but denies the mid-majors. TIME FOR PLAYOFFS

Man I was so looking forward to not having to travel to Las Vegas again when BYU could have been playing right here. Oh well I will set my date for Las vegas.

So then, let me get this straight...We'd still have the BCS but, now we'd have what you would call "The Best of the Rest title..........naaaaaaa, lets keep raggin on the BCS

I sure would love to have seen BYU play their annual joke bowl game right here in the UTES stadium while we are off to some nice warm climate playing a real team. GO UTES!!!!! countdown has started.

Whoever wrote this article left out a key point.
Why was it rejected?

Thank Goodness | 11:34 p.m. May 1, 2008
Lets be honest, BYU or Utah wouldn't be playing in that bowl anyways. Well maybe Utah, but I don't see too many people coming from SDSU or New Mexico or Wyoming or anywhere else to watch a bowl game in Salt Lake in December. Maybe the players parents and girlfriends and thats about it. Not every bowl eligible team needs to go to a bowl. There are already way too many, and every sane person in America knows that we need a playoff in college football anyways.

It is so easy to be a nay-sayer to any idea that one does not come up with him or herself...
There are, as there always are, practical reasons to do or not do something, in this case, vis a vis, a bowl in Salt Lake City...why not just let the process conclude naturzlly, even if it means trying again in six months, approval then or not...the approval of two more bowls in the East once again just reflects NCAA distorted and selfish bias, as well as an ongoing appearance of pandering to some powerful and monied special interests...that is both the reaity and the bane of college sports...
