Good for BYU. Another national championship is on the way! Oh, wait a minute, you mean that most fortunate last second win against UCLA last December wasn't for the 2007 national football championship?
Eddie shines: | 1:59 a.m. April 13, 2008
Even though this story is all about byu I have to say IT:

Utah’s freshman Eddie Wide III ran for 44 yards on five carries including a 12-yard touchdown.

Byu’s freshman J.J. DiLuigi rushed four times for 27 yards.

I think the edge goes to UTAH. Even though both Eddie and JJ will not be seing any action this year.

During this spring season the only postion I feel BYU is better in is the D-line. Any thoughts.

Go UTES!!!!
Nice NIT wit | 2:10 a.m. April 13, 2008
...And the Utes are headed for another year of mediocrity, winning some bigger out of conference games, while somehow managing to lose to UNLV, New Mexico, TCU, SDSU, and of course BYU.

Go Cougs!

Lets see, how about:
QB
TE
WR
Read: Offense in general
All Offense, Defense and Specail | 4:13 a.m. April 13, 2008
Like I said I the only thing that I am slightly worried about is the D-line. (Slightly)
Other that that BYU has nothing on the UTES. I even think the U’s running game is BETTER!!

That is with both teams healthy of course.

Go UTES!!
Fans | 6:07 a.m. April 13, 2008
wow, over 16k fans attending a scrimmage. That's a packed house up north.
Mark | 6:27 a.m. April 13, 2008
Coach Mendenhall continues to be obsessed about injuries. To feed this fixation, I suggest the following for fall camp:

-For every scrimmage, put the players in those big foam sumo costumes.
-Change scrimmages to be flag football.
-Limit the first team to the weight room and running drills until the first game against Northern Iowa.
Belgie | 6:40 a.m. April 13, 2008
Love it! After what can hardly be called "the spring game" in which BYU didn't play a single starter, the U fans run to the Desnews articles and declare their superiority at every position. I hope they're having fun now, because they've only got about 5 months before they have to face the cold hard facts.
Not enough fans | 7:32 a.m. April 13, 2008
Over 92,000 fans attended Alabama's Spring Game. BYU's on its way, but not there yet.

Eddies Shines: You realize that this wasn't a real game, right? The stats are meaningless as a comparison between BYU and Utah because BYU's offense started every play on the 25-yard-line.

The NIT: Someone remind me... In which year did the University of Utah win an AP National Championship in Football? Was it 1984? The Utes had a great season in 2004, but since then both schools have enjoyed a coaching change. Which school is dominating the league?

All Offense, etc.: We'll find out in about 7 months which team has the better Offense, Defense, and Special Teams unit. For now, I'm just impressed that you're ranking the Utes higher than one of last year's top offenses and playing the "healthy" card so early. It's a football TEAM. You need depth. BYU's been working on that for three years. How's the depth coming in SLC?
Boise Coug | 7:40 a.m. April 13, 2008
16,000 FANS TO A BLUE AND WHITE GAME, THE UTES DIDN'T GET THAT MUCH FOR HOMECOMING LAST YEAR, AND HALF THE FANS WERE FROM UTAH STATE.
Re: Eddie Shines | 7:55 a.m. April 13, 2008
5 carries for 44 yards. Wow, that's impressive. Was that against the Utah defense? Oh, doesn't count then. As for thoughts about your "feelings" that BYU is only better than Utah at the D-line you might be right. On paper Utah and TCU are better than BYU every year but the difference is coaching. Bronco takes less talent and gets the players to play like a team. Utah is full of a bunch of chest thumping individuals who are very athletic but more concerned about winning the Heisman than winning the game. (Ask Brent Casteel). Whittingham doesn't know what to do with these types of players. That's what I feel.
Re: Fans | 7:58 a.m. April 13, 2008
16,700 is a packed house up north if it's not raining. In the rain, 10,000 is considered a sell out.
BYU | 8:55 a.m. April 13, 2008
Hey eddie shines, just cause your boy ran for more yardage, doesnt mean anything, that just shows what kind of defense Utah has. Utah will need a prayer to do anything this year!!
oh my whatever | 9:18 a.m. April 13, 2008
JJ brings a lot of needed speed and agressiveness into the backfield. I was there, that back has got some killer instinct. I think coaches would be smart to work him into the regular rotation.

The U's run game better than the Y's? Right, just like their pass game is better than the Y's too. The best running back the Utes have right now is Corbin Louks.
The NIT | 9:46 a.m. April 13, 2008
To not enough fans - Who said anything about Utah? BYU did receive a national championship in 1984, I grant you that. But, if you listen to BYU fans and read postings such as these, they've also won 8 or 9 titles since then. That's what makes it both interesting and frustrating - the unbelievable arrogance and "head in the sand" attitude of said BYU fans. BYU has won two Mtn. West [not national] championships in a row after Utah won two in a row - and the games between the schools have been both exciting and VERY close the past 3 years after Utah's blow out win in 2004. The schools are much closer to each other than most fans like to admit. But, if you need to know the all time or recent records against each other, we can look it up.
It's UCLA | 10:29 a.m. April 13, 2008
all the way, so dream on and on going to round you up like they did in TEXAS!
MizzouCougar Fan | 10:58 a.m. April 13, 2008
I find all this banter about who's better hillarious. Let's face facts folks, it really doesn't matter how good or abysmal either team is, at the big show down for the Beehive Boot, both teams play each other like they're fighting for the last virgin at the temple altar. What Utah seems to lack in the last 2 games is that intangible killer instinct and lack of creativity at the head coaching position. I just want to go on record as saying to Kyle Whittingham...thank you from the bottom of my blue and white bleeding heart for snubbing your alma mater. I'd take Bronco Mendenhall on a bad day over Whittingham on his best day any day. oh and a couple last comments: Beck to Harline and 4th and 18...
Re: The NIT | 11:47 a.m. April 13, 2008
Ute troll alert.

Analysis: Harmless ankle biter.

Carry on.

Adding a speedy, elusive, hard-running back to BYU's already solid backfield and a future All-American kicker. The Utes are shaking in their underarmor at the monster that awaits them in November.

Great news out of camp! J.J. is going to be hot!!! The fun thing is the cougs don't need him now, but can use him if the want! Luxury galore! This is a exciting kid with great potential.

Enough talk from yewt fan. They are delusional and beyond reason. They don't even know the NIT is for BASKETBALL!

Thanks to the 16000 who went in support! This was even after it was announced that the 1st stringers would not be playing! FAN SUPPORT! We love our team!!!
nyron | 1:46 p.m. April 13, 2008
I wish these classless fans of other teams would at least show respect that this is a BYU LOG. KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF. IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED THEY CAN LOOK UP YOUR LOG, IF YOU HAVE ONE, AND GET THE ONESIDED VIEW THAT YOU SPEW FORTH.
I AM DELIGHTED OF BYU AND THE ENTIRE TEAM & COACHING STAFF.
Go Cougars! | 2:19 p.m. April 13, 2008
Great news about JJ and the rest of the new guys.

Kinda wish Bronco would develop a diversity plan in which both the offense and defense could completely change their look and attack in stratgic situations.

obviously JJ brings the speed to truly bring the running game around the edge. Maybe a 250 lb line backer that can jump down into a four man defensive line gig. Whatever, the cougars are really good (great), but very predictable as well.
Re: Nyron | 2:24 p.m. April 13, 2008
This is America Nyron and people can express their views.

As for BYU football, even if BYU goes undefeated they will not go to the national championship game. BYU needs to get out of the MWC and try to get into the PAC-10.
RE: RE. Nyron | 2:39 p.m. April 13, 2008
No BYU will not play for the Nat Championship this year. BYU is scheduled to play for the Nat Champioship NEXT YEAR...when Max is a senior. The cougars will only WIN a major BCS game this year, gain more national respect. Opening the door to pick up some blue chip California and Texas kids, as well as, one blue chip transfer from USC! It's all right there in the program on page three, under national championship!!!
LindonCougar | 2:54 p.m. April 13, 2008
Never in all my days as a Cougar fan do I feel stronger about BYU winning a national championship than I do for the following season. Bronco has all the pieces of a team bound for destiny. It WILL happen next season and the boys at the BCS will again have to change their system just like after 1984 to avoid an "outsider" win the whole blasted thing!

COUGAR BLUE TRUE AND THROUGH!!
G | 3:12 p.m. April 13, 2008
ewe bball and football fans have nothing to cheer about at home. Let them take a few shots at the conference leader.
The NIT | 3:25 p.m. April 13, 2008
Don't be so simplistic - maybe "The NIT" doesn't stand for the National Invitational [basketball] Tournament - there other words that start with the letters N and I and T.
Fr. WR from Florida | 3:28 p.m. April 13, 2008
That kid can move, hope he shows up ready to burn UCLA for a couple of TD's. Hard to defend what you haven't seen. I look for most teams to double mug both Collie and Reid.

BTW Reid made that leaping side line catch against UCLA in LV. He was robbed (twice). Reid may become the go to guy in some games, and he can handle it!
Ernest T. Bass | 4:08 p.m. April 13, 2008
he's going to be better than Ma'afala, Jamal Anderson and Steve Smith.
John in Texas | 4:17 p.m. April 13, 2008
All this battling between Utah and BYU??? Here in Texas even A&M and the Longhorns don't try to assassinate each other.

O yes, BYU does a remarkable job dealing with all the coming and going missionaries. Let any other school pull off what the Y is able to accompolish.
Think it through folks before you render judgement.
CougarBlue | 5:02 p.m. April 13, 2008
NIT = nit picker
NIT = someone who is real irksome
NIT = someone who is clueless
NIT ? (You get the idea)

The way the BCS has it set up BYU will have to go winleess all this year and all next year to even hope they have a chance at another National Title. The BCS doesn't like someone raining on their monopolistic parade.

The only reason teams from outside the BCS conferences even have a chance is because of members of congress rumblings about a taking a closer look at how the BCS is set up. The NCAA didn't have the guts to say that all conferences need to be part of the makeup.

As far as the Y going to the PAC 10 it will never happen, has never been discussed in the PAC 10. Sunday play issues will keep them out. I will not be surprised in 10 years if the PAC 10 starts having some football games on Sunday.

For Ute blog hit sports then hit U of U at top of DMN homepage. Last big article of significance... New Uniform company....their big recruiting coupe.......feel free to use their blog and let them continue on ours.....need a little humor, which on occasion Uteys do provide.
running superiority | 6:37 p.m. April 13, 2008
The only running game the Utes have superiority in is running off at the mouth!!!! I see a new logo opportunity....."The Runnin' Off At The Mouth Utes"!!!!! Coach Whittingham can be the first guy out of the tunnel on game day waving the flag with their new logo. I am shaking in my shoes already!

Our favorite fits you to a TEE........NITWIT...and to one of your earlier...it's also glaringly boring to hear Uteys who have to go back to the land before time....) much further back than 1984 ).... to dig out their NCAA N.C.'s, which we have all acknowledged numerous times, to have occurred before we quit playing football on a cow pasture and not using peach baskets for basketball........You Uteys throw it over the fence and we just accomidate you and throw it back....been that way for years but...the real difference is, we actually have something to brag about concerning continuous success vs showing up every once in a while.
Ridgerunner | 7:23 p.m. April 13, 2008
How I enjoy the rivalry between Utah and BYU! Does it get out of control? It already has for me and my family. Last time I went to a game at R-E stadium, drunk fans with vulgar language ruined the game for me and for my family who were there to enjoy the rivalry. I will never go to another game in R.E. stadium. No wonder you can't fill the stadium during home games! Utah, please clean up your act!
re;the NIT | 8:21 p.m. April 13, 2008
OK, I'm going to bite. Please tell me what NIT means to you. If it's anything than the basketball tournament, your first comment is even dumber. Please this simplistic mind is waiting.
The NIT | 9:35 p.m. April 13, 2008
OK, if you must know NIT is a direct reference to the sports programs at the University of Utah. It means Non Important Team. Wait it could be Not Interested Thesbians, after all they are just pretenders.

Whoops, I meant thespians.

The quest for perfection begins here. The next time our boys take the field, the quest for perfection will begin to become reality.

I have such admiration for Coach Mendenhall for having the courage and inspiration to set the standard that will lead to perfection.

With the standard set by a brilliant coach, our boys will respond. An undefeated season including a BSC bowl victory will return the Cougars to their place on the national scene of college football.

Think about it, do you think it is coincidence that national tv coverage for the Cougares has become a reality in the same year that Coach Mendenhall has assembled the pieces for this team to compete at the highest levels of college football. I don't think so. Magic happens for a reason.

Hang on to your hats fellow Cougars, the pieces are in place for a long ride of college football dominance.
Doomed | 11:52 p.m. April 13, 2008
I think BYU is going to be humbled this year...

This isn't 1984...never will be with the current system...

BYU fans seem to think that going undefeated will get them another national championship, where the facts point that there will most likely be another undefeated team (in 2004, there were 3 others, along with Utah) along with 1 loss teams that will always be ranked ahead of an undefeated MWC team...

I think anything over cracking the BCS is just a dream in the current system we have now...
Doomed? | 7:36 a.m. April 14, 2008
Yep, a coach who knows how to get his team to win 11 games in two years, many returning starters and amazing new talent coming in including J.J. who basically single handily beat the #1 HS team in the nation to win the CA championship, and Sorensen who can kick field goals better than anyone anyone has ever seen, is certainly doomed for utter destruction.

Yeah, BYU is doomed for destruction. They have no weapons at all, and no backup weapons.
RE: Ridgerunner | 7:40 a.m. April 14, 2008
Right on my good brother. My last visit to a game in Salt Lake was 1985. What an amazing football game BYU and the utes played that day. If I remember right the final score was 17-12 in favor of the Y. Regardless of the score, the Cougars won. But my point is this........Ute fans know how to smell up a great game.

Like Ridgerunner, I took my wife to the game, hoping for the best. But ute fans spit on us, poured beer, used the foulish of language and did everything they could to make our game day experience a difficult one at best.

It's sad that human beings must treat others like that.

As for the football stuff, it's great that J.J. had a good spring game. It sounds as though OUR kids have the right atttitude as they approach the fall season.

But of course the yewts got to chime in and tell us all about how much better they are than us.

Question? When are you guys going to start running off at the mouth of what games we'll need to lose to give your pathetic losers a chance to win the conference?

GO Cougars!!!!!!!!
Re: Doomed | 7:47 a.m. April 14, 2008
Go be a Ute fan then, and support an even more mediocre program.
Geezer | 8:26 a.m. April 14, 2008
All I read last year from our esteemed rivals was that BYU was going to choke and not win the conference. It didn't happen. We have a chance to be better this year. Maybe we'll all be humbled and BCS aspirations will melt, but I love Cougar football. (the championship BCS game is out of the question even if we have a perfect season) Looking forward to our first game.
Geezer | 8:30 a.m. April 14, 2008
Lots of naysayers. The team has tremendous potential, but we'll have to see how good they are this fall. The offense should be awesome. All I heard last fall from our rivals was how we were going to choke and lose the conference championship. I guess we all remember how that turned out.
Re: Geezer | 10:27 a.m. April 14, 2008
Once again .... being at the top of the MWC is the same as being at the top of the pee wee football league. Even though the situation isn't even close to being fair, the reality is that the best football is being played in the Big 10 and SEC. If you don't mind watching mediocre, powder puff football, then the MWC is for you.
weak sister | 12:00 p.m. April 14, 2008
What ever happened to bragging rights? Shouldn't all the Y fans be able to talk their smack without the little yewties having to bite their ankles because they can't handle it? I'm sure if it was the other way around they'd be making a muss...er, a fuss about it. Pipe down, yewties...go back and sit at the kiddie table.
Anonymous | 12:52 p.m. April 14, 2008
Sat by JJ's fam and it was cool for them to finally get to see their son get some playing time. I'm sure we will see JJ on special teams and here and there despite the depth at RB. If a kid has talent there is no reason to keep him on the bench..

We will see how good this team is come the season..but for now things like the spring game are enough to calm my football craving for a little while..then its back to ESPNU and ESPN Classic for reruns of games!
Wow | 2:26 p.m. April 14, 2008
I've been a season ticket holder at RES for quite a few years and have NEVER seen any of the actions you people claim. Amazing. However, I've been by some loudmouth cougar fans. Oh and I do remember going to a BYU/Penn State game when I was a kid (my friends dad had tickets) Anyway, the people around us found out my family went to Utah games and about three rows of BYU faithful piled on a 2nd grader. It was lame.
To: Wow | 2:38 p.m. April 14, 2008
Am I hearing this correct? Fans at LES are more intimidating than at RES? Ute fans should be embarrased that "You Fetchers" scares them.

My best friend is a Ute and I'm a Cougar. We have sat together both at RES and LES each wearing our teams colors. 90% of both fan bases are great and had fun interactions. 10% of fans are boorish and imature. Who is more vulgar? Not even close. At least you can take a 2nd grader to LES.
