Jerry loves to quote what he apparently considers brilliant tidbits of wisdom from well known or obscure authors, even to the point of building his newly discovered authors as discovering something earth shattering and life altering, but then you read again what he considers to be so brilliant and realize some of these people quoted are only slightly less confused than Jerry. The substance seems to be wanting, but the build up makes for more hyperbole rather than some newly discovered secret of the universe.

Jerry,
It is not hard to be wiser than you were at the age of 33.
In fact, it is not hard being wiser than you currently are.
Perhaps you should consider another career. I have yet to read anything of substance from you.

I consistently enjoy Jerry's column. His comments are both well thought out and thought provoking.

Once more, Jerry has revealed his shallowness by how he prejudges people based on his own errant stereotypes. This is the same thing we saw you do with the man dressed differently on the plane - remember?
It is less than inspiring for you to share your prejudiced flaws with us. I don't really enjoy reading your column anymore. Sorry.

Well, I disagree with those of you who ripped on Jerry's column. One thing he acknowledges is his own flaws and shortcomings...and that is something that those of you who criticize him here probably refuse to do for yourselves. We all have flaws and stereotypical beliefs that prevent us from being all that we can be. Phil, Where's The Meat, and Anonymous....take a step back and look at yourselves. I am so glad that each of you has all the answers. Jerry just acknowledged that he does not.....that's all. When a man humbles himself you don't need to pile on.

If he has no answers, then he has no business writing a column.

I can't believe the negative comments this column generated. I found it, as always, thought provoking, interesting and very true to the point. I am a charter member of the old fogie generation, and I second what he says. Now we know all the answers, nobody asks the questions, but I have also learned that I don't know everything. I learn from those around me all the time. Any day you discount what someone else has to say, you impoverish yourself.
I live over 700 miles away, and visit the Desnews every Saturday just to read Jerry's column. I immagine Jesus heard much the same reaction when he taught in the temple. Far more naysayers who discount what you have to say as uninformed, worthless and poor just because they didn't say it first.
Keep them coming, Mr. Johnson. I need your column to keep me grounded every week.

I think he's spot-on. I'm 54, and am amazed at how much I have learned over the past year from a ballroom dance instructor who is exactly half my age. And I'm not talking here about the foxtrot or rumba, either -- I'm talking about life! I'm glad I didn't decide to ignore her because of her youth.

If all you Jerry fans want is warm fuzzies and to feel good, they have pills that can do that.
The purpose of a column is to share some wisdom, insight, knowledge, and intelligence.
Jerry has failed to do that here.
