Timj, I respectfully disagree. Don't be fooled into thinking that rape is not about sex (this theory originated from a woman psychiatrist who was clearly a little slow when it came to understanding man's sex drive). If rape is only about control and violence, why does it end in sex? Why doesn't a rapist just tie up his victims and/or beat them to satisfy his need for violence and control? Answer - because it is about sex. Rape is a sex crime. The fact that it has a violent side is what makes it 'rape.'
That being said, if you can't somehow connect the dots between the increase in sex in the media and the increase in sex related crimes (as this paper has today, and many other groups have been doing), then you clearly have an outside agenda. The rest of us are on to it.

Sunday Morning Sermon? | 11:05 a.m. March 16, 2008
This sounds like a Sunday School talk, not a news article:
Jeremiah taught,"Stand ye in the ways (of right conduct), and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way (is), and walk therein and ye shall find rest for your souls" (Jeremiah 6:16).
The oldest way goes back to the beginning. God, who created this earth, gave as his first commandment to mankind the requirement to "be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth" and that to accomplish this, "therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife" (Genesis 1:28, 2:24).
Any concrete suggestions that don't come from Church?

Look at the link between sex and sex crimes in European countries.
They are definitely fascinated with sex, and promiscuity is much more common, and yet...
sex crimes aren't as high.
Don't get me wrong...they have problems with sex crimes too. I'm just saying that I think there's a bigger link between violence and rape than sex and rape.

To timj:
There less sex crimes in europe because it europe is so open about sex and thus easier to come by.
When you put the reigns in it like here in the US then you have more of a problem because it is harder find outlets for it.
Obviously rape is sex crime not a crime of violence.
Violence is just a means to an end. To say otherwise is to kid yourself and to deny and underestimate the power of the male sex drive.
Just ask yourself this: would you have sex with someone if did not want to have sex?

If we're so sex-obsessed how come this article has only drawn a handful of posts? The average basketball story gets dozens.

Because people are commenting on the article itself....

Why does the DNEWS allow Joe Cannon to write? He is terrible at it.
Joe complains that the media uses sex to sell things, so he writes an article about sex to sell religion, as usual.
My question is why are people like him so uptight about sex?
Is his article about sex crimes, sexual relationships, intimacy, sexual freedom...he never quite makes the point of the article clear.
Yes, child molestation and rape are bad. Sex is not bad if the people are willing and consenting adults.
Can Joe write an article about anything and not bring his religious views into it? It is religion that tries to make sex into something bad.
For people that are so sensitive about the subject of sex, there sure seem to be a lot of "begatting" going on here in happy valley.

Realize that rape is considered a violent crime. High levels of sex outside of marriage in a community does not mean that there is a high level of sex crimes.
Although I agree that sex is glorified too much in the media, I do not think that this leads to the high level of sex crimes we are experiencing.
I'm not sure why people commit sex crimes, but I'm pretty sure that 86-year old women and five-year old girls aren't turned into victims because of how sex is portrayed in the media. I have a feeling that violence in the media has a stronger link with violent sex crimes than sex in the media does.
