Wow, and you thought you would get a fair shake from the same goverment who brings you the IRS. You are very much entitled to the full amount but given potential court hearings I bet the goverment has a lot deeper pocket than you do and will practically guarantee you will spend at least 75k in legal fees befor they offer to settle on the remaining 75k, long and short they may pay out 150k but they will make darn sure you spend everything you have first. And don't forget the IRS will want their fair 75% of the booty, after all they are entitled.

From a taxpayer in this country I say boo hoo. The money they are to pay out is tax money ... it doesn't grow on FBI trees. Take you 75K and be happy that you stubled on to a "hidden treasure" of sorts.

You know, if Mr. Bayles would just go out and get tasered during a couple of routine traffic stops, he could make up that extra 75k real quick.

But isn't the real question one of the government keeping its word? The FBI didn't have to offer a reward, or it could have offered a smaller reward. But when it announced an award in a certain amount, doesn't the FBI have an obligation to do what they offered to do?
What? | 1:17 p.m. March 11, 2008
Get money for "stumbling" upon the bodies?
How about giving the money to the families of the officer(s) that died?????
Sheesh. Blood money.

What a shame | 1:23 p.m. March 11, 2008
Pay what was advertised. If they won't then that'll shoot holes in their credibility and will limit effectiveness of rewards in the future. Why would I turn someone in just to get cheated out of what was promised...very VERY bad situation.

I agree with George Crandall. The question isn't whether or not the reward should have been offered. It WAS offered, and the FBI should stand behind its promises.

There has been no mention of the reason the FBI payed only 50% of the reward. One could be forgiven for thinking someone at FBI headquarters made of with the other half.

Maybe we do not know all of the facts. Maybe they dropped the amount down after so many months. There may be a good reason. Think before making stupid judgement statements.

Was the reward "Dead or Alive" , I would think a $75K for an accidental discovery would be satisfactory. Most rewards are offered to get the bad guys off the street. Not sure that bag of bones was a threat.
Pay up please | 4:45 p.m. March 11, 2008
One would hope that the FBI wants to keep its reputation for integrity for any rewards offered. After all citizen tips and input solve many of the crimes for them.
Pay up please.
Pay up please.

If I go shopping and the price marked on an item is $.99 the store HAS to sell that item to me regardless of its real worth. They have advertised it at that much and I have picked it up and put it in my cart. Mr. Bayles found the body, it was advertised at a reward of $150,000. Regardless of whether its worth it or not...it was advertised at that much. The ethical, honorable, right thing is to pay the money and be more careful next time. Its call "word of honor"... something I thought this country once stood behind.

How would the government feel if i declared on my taxes that I owed 150 k in taxes but i feel that 75 k is fair compensation for the government. That won't fly at all I would lose everything that I have and probably go to jail. Whats good for the goose is good for the gander. Now pay up!
Entered Name | 5:58 p.m. March 11, 2008
None of us know the wording on the reward poster and the report didn't give us any details. Until we do know what conditions, if any, were attached to the reward, further speculation on who is right is pointless.
TBrooke | 6:11 p.m. March 11, 2008
Maybe they only paid him 50% because he only found the bones without any flesh. The FBI felt cheated.
nottyou | 7:04 p.m. March 11, 2008
Hey ENTERED NAME, I am going to speculate that you are a pompous rear-end…how’d I do? Is that pointless?
Ben Night horse Cambell | 7:34 p.m. March 11, 2008
The colorado senator was key in obtaining the reward from legislation. This government entity is well known for trying to buffalo(he, he) their way through anything the area or region office thinks they can get over on! They must think this part of the state is backward..but they are not! Hold them to their word of honor and contact who ever was in charge of procuring those funds! This citizen deserves this money for his retirement and is a good citizen, rightly so should be compensated. The FBI shouldn't give the impression of running the till when it was specifically allocated by certain acts or passage to get the funds!Nighthorse Cambell was involved because this happened for the most part in colorado, involving a fatality of a peace officer there.
Pay Up | 9:34 p.m. March 11, 2008
Stick it to 'em! They said $150,000 so they should pay $150,000. Quit messing around. Does ANYONE keep their word anymore?
Hooda thunkitt? | 9:52 p.m. March 11, 2008
The GOVERNMENT not keeping a PROMISE?
Why is anyone surprised? We've turned into a banana republic, with presidents lying under oath and the FBI losing and falsifying evidence. Who trusts them anymore?

HONOR WHAT YOU PROMISED | 11:10 p.m. March 11, 2008
I THINK SOME OF YOU ARE MISSING THE REAL FACTS HERE. REGARDING IF THE REWARD WAS FOR "DEAD OR ALIVE" OR THAT THE VICTING FAMILY DESERVE IT BETTER. IF THE FBI..PAID $75K ALREADY WHAT IT'S MEAN;? DO YOU UNDERSTEND. IF THE ORINAL REWARD WAS 150K WHAT IS THEIR EXCUSE FOR NOT HONORING THE FULL AMOUNNT?,,
AS SOME ONE ALREADY SAID IT IF WERE TO OWE THE IRS 150K WE ARE NOT GOING TO SAY LEST PAY ONLY 75K BECOUSE WE WANT SO. THEY WON'T LET US DO IT RIGHT. WE HAVE TO COMPLY WIHT THE FULL AMOUNT. IN THIS CASE IS THE SAME. THE FBI HAS TO HONOR THE 150K THEY PROMESSED. OR JUST BECOUSE IT'S THE FBI THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO STEAL. I DON'T THINK SO. I FEEL SORRY FOR THE VICTIMS FAMILY, BUT THIS IS A COMPLETELY SOBJECT.

"WHAT A COUNTRY"!!!!!!!!
Just the facts | 11:46 p.m. March 11, 2008
Now everybody just settle down and get your facts straight. If I could post the link here I would, but you can "Google" it yourself. The wanted poster reads "The FBI is offering a reward of UP TO $150,000 for information leading to the ARREST of Jason Wayne McVean." (caps added) It sounds to me like this here cowboy got a pretty fair deal.
