Buttars skips NAACP meeting

And Mr. Edward Lewis Jr...I didn't know that only one group of our U.S. citizens have a right to talk about "public lynchings". Did this type of thing not occur in the wild west? A lynching is just what the NAACP is trying to do here.
The comments made by Mr. Buttars were not the best to say in this day and age, but I can see where he didn't mean anything by it. He referred to a "black baby". This DOES NOT have to refer to a race of people! After all, black is a color and can be referred to in other ways. African-American is a race which I respect but we can't help it if those from that race happen to want to call themselves after a color. The color black can be referred to in many derrogatory ways but those of the African-American race can't hold it against those of us who accidently use the word "black" in a way they don't like--especially if one apologizes for it!
Anderson didnt even bother to apolgize; therfore the concept that the left is morally superior regarding tolerance is laughable.
Although I do not agree with Mr. Butters choice of words, we need to listen to the entire speach that he made, not just little snippts that can be blown out of proportion.
Being "offended" is in my control. Nobody can offend me if I don't want them to. They can try, but unless I make a real choice to be offended, they cannot succeed.
Take the High road, accept the apology that has already been given and start careing about things that matter.
Can't we just stay with the "black baby statement" ??
This really shows how any statement can be taken as racist, just depends who you are.
Hey, and history too...
And, have a little empathy for those not born White like you...
Being born white in the USA is like being born on third base and thinking you hit a triple, nothing you earned, which makes it difficult to understand those who work for respect.
But I do like your handle there Dipnard, it's not a word, but it sounds as if it describes you pretty well.
The thing apologists can't understand is empathy.
If any of you ranting and raving, calling the NAACP racist can imagine any world where you would use the phrase Buttars did around an African American that you respect, as an off the cuff remark (Say they did buy a car, and it wasn't Black (the bill was not Black), but you thought it was Ugly, would you ever say that is an "Ugly Black Baby"???
I think your African American Friends would do a great job explaining to you.
If this is the modern American conservative movement's trump card (childish name-calling), they are wasting their time thinking this is the way civil discourse should be.
Cooler and calmer heads are taking control.
The more I hear the more I am convinced that this is not about the comment but something "thin skinned" (whoops I used the word skin which some might say is racist) people are trying to exploit. Wow!
I was born in Provo in 1960, raised in Davis County and refuse to walk on egg shells, but see no need to offen one person because of my uneducated speech.
My political views are conservative Republican / Libertarian, and I don't cry because they are not accepted anyone else. Feel free to be a bigot, but you are not a bigot because of the pigmentation of your skin, but because of the hate inside of your soul.
If you are a "just" person, then I honestly doubt that you would purposefully hurt someone if you could find a different word or phrase.
I do not care about the NAACP, but I do care about the culture my children are raised in.
The NAACP has a right to their position, just as you and Mr. Buttars, however, they are not elected to make decisions that affect me.
Mr. Buttars showed poor judgement, and should be helad accountable by Utahns.
Sharpton is a bigot too...
Chris, your day has passed.
Liberal should mean open-minded, but as a practical matter, it has come to mean hypocritical. Where is the empathy or morality in in that? How is that cooler or calmer?
I have a dress I hate and that baby is a black ugly thing and I want to get rid of. Am I now portrayed as a racist, with homicidal tendencies? I just hope the NAACP stays away from me. I will not offer an apology, they can have it. And as far as them being racist, I think in their thinking, you can only be a racist if you're white, which makes all us whiteys one.
Don't get me started on how racist the NAACP is. Most intelligent people are aware if the organization weren't racist it would be for the advancement of ALL people.
There was NOTHING racist said, there is NO history or record racism from him.
You liberals and blacks are acting like a bunch of mad slobbering dogs who smell blood.
Aare going after a conservative voice.
IN this forum you gone after Bush, Limbough, Valentine, Romney, Mormon, Utahns, and others.
This is clearly not about buttars at all.
This is clear agenda and politics driven.
Liberal facist will do anyting to silence conservative voices.
"NAACP Rejects Private Meeting With Apologetic Senator." The lead could have read, "A state senator who said he wanted to meet with the Salt Lake branch of the NAACP has been rebuffed by the group, which is demanding a meeting open to the public. "They don't care what I have to say," Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, said Tuesday.
It appeared that Buttars was correct in his assessment when Jeanetta Williams, president of the Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP held a news conference. Saying she doubted Buttars could have said anything to change the committee's mind about the call for Buttars to step down, Williams was accompanied by branch member Edward Lewis Jr.
Lewis rejected Buttars' apology and explanation that he didn't mean anything racial when he called a bill he opposed a black baby. Lewis, displaying his rare ability to divine what Buttars actually meant, said, he knew that Buttars meant to be racially divisive. ...
When will they stop with a double standard?
Colorful language is not automatically racist. Like it or not "blackhearted" means evil and has nothing to do with African-Americans or any other black person, "lily livered" means cowardly and has nothing to do with white persons specifically, and having a yellow streak up one's back also means cowardly and does not refer to Asian people. Anyone who takes those colors personally is just looking for trouble.
(Besides, "white" people aren't really white; they're pinkish or tan, and "black" people are really brown or tan, not black, and Asians aren't yellow either. Why do we get so hung up?!?)
If the NAACP had simply pointed out that some people could take the remark out of context and be offended, they would have achieved their purpose without making themselves into victims.
People are different. People look differnet.
People are of differnt races. That is just the way it is.
And any fool can see we are different. Some people seem to go out of ther way to be different.
Some people don't like gays and their lifestyle.
Some people don't like blacks. Some for ligitimate reasons. Some not.
Who is trying to silence the voices of those they don't like?
So far it has just been liberals.
Apparently conservatives are more tolerant of dissenting voices. And liberal don't like fact that conservatives are willing voice their opinions.
But racism will never go away, because we never allow open dialog about it. We never find out why someone doesn't like another. People are just labeled and dismissed. And it is driven under the surface.
Until we can openly talk about the races without fear, without need for apololgy as how we feel. Including negative things. It will live on.
In this case, though, there was simply no question the metaphor had been taken beyond the level of mere inanimate reference. The baby began to be referred to as the human baby in the biblical story of King Solomon.
Sen. Howard Stephenson said: "This is what I call the 'ugly baby' bill. Sen. Eastman has been likened to Solmon in bringing this forth, but he's holding an ugly baby and is ready to cut it in half."
That's when Buttars rose up with his 'not only that' interjection, adding, "This baby is black I tell you. This is a dark, ugly thing.
No, he was not saying "Whoa, baby," or "Dang, that car is sure a beautiful baby."
What about the world you are creating as an elected represenative for the state. Is the culture appropriate for my daughters?
Martin Luther King, Jr. said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
How do you feel about this?
Brigham Young said "We should never permit ourselves to do anything that we are not willing to see our children do."
How do you feel about your little children following your path? How about my children who are taught to look up to their leaders?
No hate here, no lies, just trying to get a read on where your soul is. If you could answer these two questions, I think many of us could figure out where you heart is.
I apologize to you for the bigotry and hate that has appeared on thes message boards. I would like you to know this is not how people talk at work, in church, or out with friends.
Keep up the good work, and stay strong. You efforts are greatly appreciated by those of wanting to raise families in a world that is not filled with hate.
Thank you to both of you for your professionalism and your patience.
Stay safe, and please don't let the simple minded mob members make you think bad about the majority, I swear the bigots are a small minority, just like anywhere.
On the other hand, however unpopular, I think Mr Buttar deserves another chance as a public servant to redeem himself by demonstrating his absolute repentance. As a minority, it is a calculated risk I am willing to make.
In 1955 I became friends with someone a nearby Boys Club. He told me that if my family moved into where he lived we would be driven out. The year was 1955 and I could not conceive of that kind of hatred. After marriage, in 1970, my wifes grandparents were driven out of their home of 50 years in south central L.A. Some idiots fire bombed their front door. Their black neighbors were crushed to have them move.
Might I suggest The Congress of Racial Equality is a group that is really working for all black sons and daughters. Also, freedom of speech is at its best when it is protecting vulgar terms. A person with a diminished soul is to be pitied not hated.
Give Mr. Buttars a peace medal for having to put up with all this drivel.
With your permission, I would like to point out two. I will refer to them as meaning A.) and meaning B.)
A.) The common people; the masses; populace or multitude.
B.) Sociology. A group of persons stimulating one another to excitement and losing ordinary rational control over their activity.
In my post I said the word "mob", purposefully using meaning B.) A group of persons stimulating one another to excitement and losing ordinary rational control over their activity.
It was what I wrote, it was what I meant. I make no apology. I am not going to set up a meeting to apologize and then run and hide. I am not leaving to go on a mission.
It was not racist and was not bigoted. It was not a metaphor, and it was meant to describe the negative actions of persons on this message board, including, according to your post, you.
You stated that is what you are, so while you think it intelligent, or funny to ask for my "resignation as a human", I don't think we do that when we both agree that I was correct.
Have a nice day.
One group views Buttars as a kind of racist cracker -
the other views him as a kind of folk hero.
That will be a fun one for you kids...
Looks to me like some more stone throwing going on here. You guys never fail at kicking some dog when it's down.
Wait and see, someday you will have your turn, see then if there is any compassion that awaits you.
Or has your liberalness blinded you all with hatred?
