So if I look at your car and say "That baby is a piece of junk!" Did
I just call babies pieces of junk? Of course not I was talking about a car or a
piece or legislation not a person. I actually don't like Butters but since
the NAACP has demanded his resignation then I say stay in there. I'm
surprised the rainbow coalition hasn't jumped on this. I suppose you going
to tell me they aren't racist either.

to defend his blatantly racist actions? How can a man have so much hate? How
long until this attracts the national media, thereby making our great state look

gains we made throughout the Olympics and for reinforcing all the stereotypes

If this was the FIRST time Buttars had said something questionable or offensive,
people might be a bit more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, accept
his apology and move on. But he has a HISTORY of saying things that offend and
then apologizes and moves on. I think this is the final straw. People are
finally saying "enough". How many times can you apologize before
people doubt your sincear? He needs to resign to show that he FINALLY has
learned. Also, I think this is a case of what goes around comes back and smacks
you in the face.

I am sick of the race card. American's who happen to have African heritage
of any amount don't "own" the word black, any more than
homosexuals "own" the word gay. How many definitions of the word
black are there in the dictionary? Any American who says black only has one
definition and that definition means African heritage are discriminating against
my RIGHT to use ALL definitions of ALL words in the English language.
Where's the ACLU! I want to file suite against the NAACP for
discrimination against my right to use all definitions of all words in the
English language! This whole thing is bunk. The media is making it worse. Get
over yourselves and go do something productive. That's what I am going to

Have we forgotton that we hold the power as voters-the legislature will not vote
for term limitations for themselves (they did but voted it down when their turn
came up) or the taking of gifts (bribes) by special interests-if they don't
vote the will of the people-- VOTE THEM OUT-if we want government by the people
then we need to take action. They think we are too dumb to know the issues or

The comments made by Mr. Buttars were not the best to say in this day and age, but I can see where he didn't mean anything by it. He referred to a "black baby". This DOES NOT have to refer to a race of people! After all, black is a color and can be referred to in other ways. African-American is a race which I respect but we can't help it if those from that race happen to want to call themselves after a color. The color black can be referred to in many derrogatory ways but those of the African-American race can't hold it against those of us who accidently use the word "black" in a way they don't like--especially if one apologizes for it!

representing Utah...

I agree that this thing has been blown WAY out of proportion. People are going
to say things and going to be misunderstood. The "Politically correct"
statement is being re-defined. This is one person that believes that a simple
mistake was made and the NAACP needs to drop it. This is a simple case of making

How come Al Sharpton did not have to attend a public meeting and apologize about
his comments that true Christians would not allow Romney to be elected? I will
tell you why. Because the LDS church was willing to make peace by forgiving him
and moving on. The treatment should be the same. Why can't the NAACP
follow this model of forgiving and forgetting? If there is a push to have
Buttars resign, then the NAACP should also push to have Sharpton resign for his
comments. You can't have it both ways people.

when using the word "black" when talking about a person, then it is
racist. Not when talking about a plane, or a storm, or a cat, or something like
that. The reason why anti-black statements are such a hot topic is because for
centuries that particular race was subjected to despicable actions and
subrogation in this country. So to say that they are being hypersensitive is
simply forgetting history. Everyone who is defending Buttars knows deep down
that this statement was offensive. Additionally, the reason that no one
attacked Mayor Anderson for his "slavish" comments was because the
Mayor had a record of fighting for equal rights, unlike the Senator in question
who has a record of saying other racist comments and trying to suppress certain
minorities.

comments, which he was. Sharpton then states that true christians will make
sure that Romney is not elected. Sharpton apologizes and life goes on. The
NAACP now demands Buttars resignation. Should there not be equal treatment for
all? Either all three are forced to resign or all three are forgiven and life
goes on. Why is Sharpton still in his position yet Imus fired and Buttars on

comment. Either they were out to cause a 'riot' or they were too

have today, that would not be surprising. Certainly this is a case where

Last night was frightening. To see the NAACP bring a beautiful little child in
and saying "my grandchild isn't ugly", then referring to the
comment Senator Butters made as if he was referring to that child, is not only a
real stretch but in really poor taste.
The more I hear the more I am convinced that this is not about the comment but something "thin skinned" (whoops I used the word skin which some might say is racist) people are trying to exploit. Wow!

The NAACP is working to create a world where my daughters do not have to be
subjected to their political leaders throwing around "vulgar" terms,
and that is the world I want them raised in.
I was born in Provo in 1960, raised in Davis County and refuse to walk on egg shells, but see no need to offen one person because of my uneducated speech.
My political views are conservative Republican / Libertarian, and I don't cry because they are not accepted anyone else. Feel free to be a bigot, but you are not a bigot because of the pigmentation of your skin, but because of the hate inside of your soul.
If you are a "just" person, then I honestly doubt that you would purposefully hurt someone if you could find a different word or phrase.
I do not care about the NAACP, but I do care about the culture my children are raised in.
The NAACP has a right to their position, just as you and Mr. Buttars, however, they are not elected to make decisions that affect me.
Mr. Buttars showed poor judgement, and should be helad accountable by Utahns.

get Mitt Romney to speak on Fox & CNN on Sen. Buttar's behalf. Let him
explain that "He saw" Chris Buttars marching with Dr. Martin Luther
King, so he knows, in his heart, that the senator didn't mean anything bad
about those people. Now maybe we could get back to protecting Utah from
homosexuals and Californians!

Anything, taken out of context, can be misconstrued or misinterpreted to say
what you want it to say. Senator Buttars gave his apology to the group that he
made his remarks to. He also made additional apologies. What he said was
inappropriate that is true�but it was also misconstrued by
NAACP and blown out of proportion. NAACP is saying �I
don�t like what you are saying; therefore we will get
revenge by destroying you.� This makes them no better than
what the �whites� did to their
ancestors decades ago. The �whites�
didn�t like the
�blacks� so they hounded them. It was
a form of intimidation, fear, and brutality. So what it different than what the
NAACP is doing?

I can't understand how the comment by Buttars "this baby (the bill) is
black, it's a dark, ugly thing", has been turned into "a black
baby". In all the replays it's always been said one way, and
that's the quote he made. No one has doctored the tape, no one has put
extra words into it, but there are those who look for just one word, and that
word is black. As far as a lynch mob, yes blacks were lynched for no apparent
reason other than the color of their skin. But so were horse thieves, cattle
rustlers, etc. in the old west. I don't think they were just black people
either, so get off it calling the term "lynching" racist.

Buttars' comment was stupid, plain and simple! I don't believe the
NAACP should be calling for in resignation, rather they should be supporting
anyone who wishes to oppose him in the election. Don't forget, we as
Americans are guaranteed the right of free speech, even if the comments are
insensitive. If I were a memeber of the Utah NAACP, I would suggest to Ms.
Williams that they fight other some of the more serious issues affectin Black

"They don't care what I have to say," Sen. Chris Buttars, R-West Jordan, said Tuesday.
It appeared that Buttars was correct in his assessment when Jeanetta Williams, president of the Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP held a news conference. Saying she doubted Buttars could have said anything to change the committee's mind about the call for Buttars to step down, Williams was accompanied by branch member Edward Lewis Jr.
Lewis rejected Buttars' apology and explanation that he didn't mean anything racial when he called a bill he opposed a black baby. Lewis, displaying his rare ability to divine what Buttars actually meant, said, he knew that Buttars meant to be racially divisive. ...

Colorful language is not automatically racist. Like it or not "blackhearted" means evil and has nothing to do with African-Americans or any other black person, "lily livered" means cowardly and has nothing to do with white persons specifically, and having a yellow streak up one's back also means cowardly and does not refer to Asian people. Anyone who takes those colors personally is just looking for trouble.
(Besides, "white" people aren't really white; they're pinkish or tan, and "black" people are really brown or tan, not black, and Asians aren't yellow either. Why do we get so hung up?!?)

Yes, Ron, we have all made mistakes. What you don't see is that this is
one of the legislators who represent Utah. He is an old man who has been around
long enough to not make such a gaffe. Because of what he said, apology or not,
it speaks volumes. If you were a young black man who held your little baby in
your arms you just might be sensitive enough to understand. You are the one who
is throwing stones at those who are appalled at such stupid behavior.

talk to the NAACP. You told the papers you were going on a mission, then seeking
re-election.
What about the world you are creating as an elected represenative for the state. Is the culture appropriate for my daughters?
Martin Luther King, Jr. said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
How do you feel about this?
Brigham Young said "We should never permit ourselves to do anything that we are not willing to see our children do."
How do you feel about your little children following your path? How about my children who are taught to look up to their leaders?
No hate here, no lies, just trying to get a read on where your soul is. If you could answer these two questions, I think many of us could figure out where you heart is.

As a Utahn born and raised 50 years in Davis county, I would like to apologize
to Jeanetta Williams, president of the Salt Lake Branch of the NAACP, and branch
member Edward Lewis Jr..
I apologize to you for the bigotry and hate that has appeared on thes message boards. I would like you to know this is not how people talk at work, in church, or out with friends.
Keep up the good work, and stay strong. You efforts are greatly appreciated by those of wanting to raise families in a world that is not filled with hate.

The NAACP is acting in a ridiculous manner. The fact that they set a trap for
Buttars shows how sad this whole thing has become. Whether or not they accept
his apology, he was ready to come and meet with them, and they suddenly invited
the press. We already know that Buttars is on thin ice, so he said he
couldn't come if it wasn't a closed meeting. I just can't grasp
the drama in this. The SL Trib did a better job telling Buttars side of this. I
think he's a cornered man, and good for him to have the guts to run and see
what West Jordan thinks, instead of the crazy NAACP.

The bottom line, Mr Buttar you HURT many people at all levels of society,
individually, collectively, and especially the State of Utah. Whether we agree
or disagree with your apology, the hurts continue in a variety of ways.
Therefore, the SIMPLEST way to apollogize is to resign from the Senate.
On the other hand, however unpopular, I think Mr Buttar deserves another chance as a public servant to redeem himself by demonstrating his absolute repentance. As a minority, it is a calculated risk I am willing to make.

Buttars needs to go!!! He is a poor role model and an huge embarrassment to
the good state of Utah and to humanity. There is no place in today's world
for such an 'ugly' and biggoted person. His continuing presence is a

The year was 1955 and I could not conceive of that kind of hatred. After marriage, in 1970, my wife�s grandparents were driven out of their home of 50 years in south central L.A. Some idiots fire bombed their front door. Their black neighbors were crushed to have them move.
Might I suggest The Congress of Racial Equality is a group that is really working for all black sons and daughters. Also, freedom of speech is at it�s best when it is protecting �vulgar terms�. A person with a diminished soul is to be pitied not hated.
