Basic Human Right | 9:52 a.m. Oct. 24, 2007
You own your body. It is yours to protect. Self defense, and possession of the best tool for that defense, is a basic human right born out of self ownership and self government and the incumbant natural responsibilities. Absent the right to self defense you are dependent on the State or others who do not value your life as you do thus making you more akin to a slave then a free person.

Lisa Hansen awoke one morning to the sounds of someone moving around inside her house. Then someone ran up her stairs and attempted to open her bedroom door. "I waited to listen to see how many footsteps I heard," Hansen said. Deciding there was only one intruder, Hansen grabbed her cell phone and reached for a gun she keeps under her bed. She ran out of the room, confronted the burglar and held him at gunpoint until police arrived. The would-be burglar turned out to be a teenager who lives in the neighborhood and had previously done some lawn work for Hansen. The teen said he had entered her home only because he saw a man in there, but Hansen did not believe the explanation. Police later discovered a checkbook belonging to Hansen's cousin in the boy's pocket.

Sorry VA, but it doesn't take a degree in psychology to recognize that any person who focuses on something or someone is going to "get" them if they aren't carrying a gun, is most definitely a person with paranoid tendencies.
What we think about expands - and gun freaks obsess on enemies being everywhere.

George Finch, 75, was sleeping in his recliner when he heard the sounds of glass breaking. Someone had broken a back window and was now entering his home. Finch then got his gun and encountered the interloper in his kitchen. "He stepped into the kitchen and he [the intruder] was right there. My dad told him to stop," Finch's daughter, Debbie Skaggs, recalls her father telling her. Finch told her the man 'just kept coming' so he fired one shot, hitting the would-be thief in the leg. The wounded man, later identified by police as Kevin Richardson, made his escape through the same window he had entered, ran a short distance and collapsed. Richardson, who died shortly thereafter, had a history of theft, trespass and prostitution arrests.

Barbara Holland closed her used car lot for the day and drove home. She had checked to make sure the handgun she has carried since 1992 was loaded after a strange encounter at the car lot left her feeling uneasy. Holland pulled the car into the driveway and, as she entered her side door, Holland bent down to retrieve something she had dropped. Suddenly a man armed with a gun came rushing at her. Holland tried to slam her door on him, but the man shoved the door open and Holland fell back on her landing. Lying on her back, Holland snatched her pistol from its holster, ready to protect herself and her 15-year-old daughter who was home at the time. Her assailant's glare changed. "He looked surprised," she says. Holland recalls firing three times, but authorities later confirmed six shots. Police identified Holland's attacker, who died at the scene, as an ex-con named Clabe Hunt.

Paul Ham and his son, Jimmy, entered a mobile home on their property to repair a water leak for tenant Kevin Clark. As they walked in, the Hams encountered a couple staying with Clark, William and Kristina Tuell. William Tuell immediately began shooting at the Hams, hitting the elder Ham in the head and shooting Jimmy Ham in the face. Both Hams then ran for their house, with Tuell and his wife on their heels. The attack continued in the Hams' home as Tuell and his wife attempted to shoot the entire Ham family. Kristina Tuell was wrestled to the ground by Ham's daughter, Sherry, but managed to escape. Though wounded, Jimmy Ham finally managed to secure a gun and kill Tuell with one shot. Kristina Tuell was later arrested after a massive manhunt and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

To those that think dialing 911 to come and rescue you, I ask, what would you do when a 150lb 4-LEGGED animal attacks you or your significant other? You see, this almost happened to me and my 7yr old daughter one day. I happened to be carrying, and was glad I did that day. You see having that firearm gave me another option of defending myself and my daughter! Fortunately, I did not have to shoot the VERY LARGE DOG, however I was prepared. Just like many others have said, why do you have a smoke detector, why do you go to the store to stock up on necessary items when a storm is coming? It is NOT about being paranoid! Just like anything else in this world, one has to be educated. You don't let your child just get in a car and drive, right? I had my first firearm given to me when I was 8yrs old as a birthday present, 30yrs later with owning firearms, I have not once shot anyone. (Guess that makes me a "nut-case". SARCASM)

I wish I could Post the Sign I saw today on usacarry.com under the Thread called - Busted Buster Sign.
It says WARNING and underneath it is a Gun with a circle around it and a line across it making the sign stating that Guns are not allowed.

In the Circle and the crossline it says "POTENTIAL HIGH CRIME AREA !" "ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK !"
"CRIMINALS WELCOME"

Under neath that it says
"YOUR LIFE MAY BE IN DANGER!".
"By denying law abiding citizens their right to carry concealed weapon, this establishment is extending an open invitation to theives, murderers, rapists, drug users,gang-bangers,pedophiles and other assorted felons!

Beneath that it says "Remember, when seconds counts, the police are minutes away

this might adversely affect one's personality.

So anonymous, how would you describe a person that has no knowledge of the training or shooting abilities of these people deciding that they are all a danger to that person? Are all of the gun owners out to get you? How would you describe someone that claims to know the motivation of people they have never met? How would you describe someone who claims to know the fears of someone they have never spoken to? You seem to have spent a lot of time thinking about this, so who is obsessed?

Dear utoc,
What you think about expands: focus, concentration, center of activity, attention, etc. Tiger Woods has this phenomenon down pat - he becomes the ball.

Now what do you think would happen if one's focal point is: "thieves, murderers, rapists, drug users, gang-bangers, pedophiles, and other assorted felons?"

Not all cops are super low speed hi drag like your husband? Infact some of the best tactical shooters in the country came from non LEO backrounds. Rob Leatham, Doug Koenig....etc... The list coudl probable go on. PS did you every see the video of the "ONLY Qualified Man in the room to handle his GLOCK .FOYTE" Man he had a lot of training. Just because you wear a badge dosn't mean that you have some super power over non LEO types. NYPD shooting at a man 127 times rings a bell. Along with the Bank of america Shoot Out in LA where you had police fire over 1,000 times. I'm not saying cops are poorly trained I'm saying not all civilians are as poorly trained as you assume, infact in most IPDA matches I participate in. Civilians usually finish in the top 5. Any LEO's that attend are in the teens. This competition imitates Hi stress with shoot No-shoot senarious.

Why we carry?
1. We dont carry firearms so that we can ignore other basics of personal safety.
Every permit holder that I know realizes that almost all dangerous situations can be avoided by vigilance, alertness and by simply making wise choices about where one goes and what one does. We dont walk down dark alleys. We lock our cars. We dont get intoxicated in public or hang out around people who do. We park our cars in well lighted spots and dont hang out in bad parts of town where we have no business. A gun is our last resort, not our first.
Miggy | 1:21 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007
2. We dont think we are cops, spies, or superheros.
We arent hoping that somebody tries to rob the convenience store while we are there so we can shoot a criminal. We dont take it upon ourselves to get involved in situations that are better handled by a 911 call or by simply standing by and being a good witness. We dont believe our guns give us any authority over our fellow citizens. We also arent here to be your unpaid volunteer bodyguard. Well be glad to tell you where we trained and point you to some good gun shops if you feel you want to take this kind of responsibility for your personal safety. Except for extrordinary circumstances your business is your business, dont expect us to help you out of situations you could have avoided.
Miggy | 1:30 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007
Please do a Google Search for "Who are we and why we carry" (with the quotes marks)

That is us. No Billy The Kids, no Dirty Callahans, no Rambos, just average folks who made a conscious decission about our persona safety.

In EVERY state that concealed or open carry was apprved, the Brady Bunchers and the Nay Sayers predicted Wild West Shootouts and blood on the streets... IT-NEVER-HAPPENED. We are now what? 34, 35 states with CWPs and the anti-gunners keep repeating the same tired mantra and you guys keep buying it? Who is the crazy? who is the fool?

Concerned | 1:31 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007
I have two points to make.

1. I am for Leagally armed citizens. The part I don't like about the open carry is that these people are not required to be trained on firearm use. I don't think that any person able to buy a gun should be allowed to carry it. I think that if you want to carry a gun in Utah, you should be trained first. And I don't mean point, aim, fire. There is more to gun use that hitting a target on a gun range. Plus, gang bangers could just start openly arrying. There needs to be some investigation and training done.

2. I am a cop and I don't want a bunch of vigilante justice citizens confronting bad guys. Defend yourself? Absolutely! Go hunting? No way! Instances like Trolley Square could go south in a hurry if a bunch of plain clothes citizens start going after shooters. You should barracade yourself and protect those you are with, Then stay put and let cops be cops. Also be prepared to do EXACTLY what the cops tell you to do. They are not going to be happy when they fist spot you with a weapon.

"Don't pick on the unfortunate people who have some disability. They are citizens too"

I'm not picking on them, you're absolutely right, they are citizens. If that's the case why don't give them mentally disabled people? Are they not citizens? It's because it's not safe! The last thing I want is to be around a blind man when he opens fire! It's like I said before, if you can't see what's in front of you, you shouldn't carry a gun. It's about the safety of everybody else!

Concerned,
Another LEO with a Heavy Badge...Dont we just LOVE them.

"You can have a gun...as long as it's stashed away and I can't see it and I can be THE ONLY ONE with a gun"

Another Person that became an Offier so that "I HAVE A BADGE AND THEREFORE I'M THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN CARRY A GUN".

I carry a Gun for protection BECAUSE the Police cannot be there when I need it. By the Way...Law Enforcement is under NO OBLIGATION/DUTY to Protect the Individual.

Goggle: "Police Have NO Duty to Protect Individuals"

"It is, therefore, a fact of law and of practical necessity that individuals are responsible for their own personal safety, and that of their loved ones. Police protection must be recognized for what it is: only an auxiliary general deterrent."

Jeff | 2:56 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007
Anonymous,
Why would I need to "carry an arsenal of weaponry"?
Do you think I should keep four spare tires in my truck? One is usually sufficient.
And you are right, it doesn't affect your life. So why are you so worried about it? If your community is so safe that no one has a reason to be armed, then none of the people who are armed will ever have a reason to draw their weapons. If they never draw their weapons they can't accidentally shoot innocent bystanders. If one of them does have a psychotic break and starts shooting innocent people do you think other armed citizens are going to join them? It would be more reasonable to assume that another armed citizen or a law enforcement officer (if any were around) would do what they can to put an end to the situation.
And as far as my being frightened of something, forming a militia would not be a solution. Enlightening those that out of their own fear and ignorance attempt to deny someone their rights is.
gang bangers | 2:59 p.m. Oct. 24, 2007
"Plus, gang bangers could just start openly carrying"

If you mean the gangs where people have felony convictions for assault, drugs, theft etc, then no, they would not be legally permited to open carry, because their possesion of firearms is illegal. That is why gang bangers hide their weapons. They are not supposed to have them.

No place in the article did it ask if the people they talked to were trained or not. I would guess that they regularly practice and train. I am a 44 year old woman who carries her Glock every place I am legally able to carry it. Sometimes open and sometimes concealed. If someone is going to carry a gun for self defense they know the laws. Since a background check is done before the gun is able to be purchased, you know that they are already law-abiding. It is a shame to listen to people who disagree with the rights that our founding fathers gave us (2nd amendment). It is an individual right and you don't have to use it, but don't snub your nose to those who do. You never know when they will be the person who saves your loved ones because the police are not there.

I agree. I also dont want, (as you put it); a society filled with hopped-up angry NRA freaks just itching to pull the trigger: or for that matter, any other type of irresponsible angry freeks. But how about the vast majority of NRA members and other gun owners who are neither, "angry", freeky nor have any desire to shoot anything other than paper targets or game animals during hunting season? It appears your real problem is with anyone who falls outside of your narrow preconcieved notion of whats normal. YOU are the one who appears to have the problem; not the vast majority of resopnsible gun owners.

Actually, most of the people I know are aware I own an assault rifle; the reasons why I own it, and have no problem with it. The fact that you know nothing about me other than your own fantasies, means I could care less about your opinions. Theyre fantasies in your own mind with no basis in reality. But since you seem fearful of living in an armed society, I invite you to move to the UK where guns are banned. I'm curious to know where Anonymous got his training as a psychiatrist since he seems so certain that we're all suffering from a mental illness. Childishly insisting we are all paranoid is not an argument, it is a cheap shot and an insult. So is calling us "red necks". If you have an actual argument to make, then do so. Otherwise, you are just making a fool of yourself.
