Sign MILLSAP or get ready for the BOO-BIRDS all year.
If Portland gets MILLSAP
PORTLAND 61 - 21
DENVER 53 - 29
UTAH 40 - 42
Millsap has not proven he can be a starter in the NBA. Yes, he was successful filling in for Boozer for a third of a season. Was he able to stay healthy during that time? Was he able to stay out of foul trouble in order to stay on the court? Did he prove that he can play D against bigger opponents for an entire season while getting starters minutes? ----NO to all questions
I say he still has a lot to prove and doesn't deserve 8-10 million/yr he can answer yes to those questions. I would contend that Millsap, making that amount of money, cannot be on a championship team as a starter unless many other players on the team are under paid. Good luck to whatever team pays him that much.
None of these players are really "worth" it. If you have to pay it though I guess millsap is probably one you would want to blow the money on.
I am not convinced he is capable of being a starting PF so I suspect AK and he will rotate minutes so their bodies hold up and do not break down as if they played full minutes.
As long as they trade boozer before the deadline they can avoid most of the luxury tax bill anyways. I am not sure they can let Millsap walk now and boozer at the end of the season for absolutely nothing in return. If you sign him at least you can trade and get something in return.
In this economy none of the current Jazz players are under paid with maybe the exception of Brewer. They all can be replaced with better cheaper players and should be.
DWill gets a lot of press for being a top 5 PG but he could be replaced. There are PGs out there who would do well enough if DWills extra money went to a great PF or SG.
It is a system. The system is greater than the parts. If a part is to expensive it should be replaced.
The players are all for any of them getting more money as long as it does not cut back on their money.
However, if 4 players hog all the money then the Jazz can't get enough quality role players. They are not aggressive drafters like POR. They develop young players slowly. They over pay the vets.
They will never win with that approach.
DWill, Boozer, Millsap, Okur are all replaceable. It is a lot easier to do that over the next 2 years.
Millsap is not capable of leading this team to a championship.
Then, trade Boozer for Thomas and an expiring contract to make the numbers match. This really is a simple game...
And remember, the Jazz still have New York's #1 pick next year and could possible sign a premium player out of the class of 2010 free agents, maybe the best class of free agents ever.
The Jazz might have to bite the bullet for one year, but it could be just dandy again in 2010.
Also the argument that Millsap is a backup is dumb. Who was Malones back up? Antoine Carr? Millsap is a much better player than Carr and will be a bargain at that contract price as a starter because the jazz will either trade or not resign boozer.
