I see no consideration given to our deployed military personal. Of couse they dropped insurance on that car setting in their parents driveway. What about them? Insurance is not continance for a year. Do they lose out for serving their country??? SUCKS
NO Thanks | 3:36 a.m. July 11, 2009
Our 2000 expedition with only 100,250 ,miles runs just fine.Even if we had to replace a transmission fixig it is alot better then a car payment. All three of our cars are paid for. Mr president geting out of debt is what AMERICANS do in a crisis. Learn It live It love It . CC A Unemployed American.

Where in the constitution of the Untied States does it give the Federal government authority to take from some taxpayers and give to others? And why are Americans, who celebrate July 4th, so anxious to part with the tradition of Freedom and resort to socialistic practices? What a nation of sheeple we've become!

Constitution? | 7:04 a.m. July 11, 2009
I couldn't find the constitutional amendment that empowers the Congress to do this.

Just another bandaid from our unintelligent gutless politicians. The following is a novel concept you nimwits. Just get rid of the 30 million+ illegals and our countries oil consumption and pollution will be cut down far more than this ridiculous cash for clunkers nonsense. OH NO, NO, NO we could never do that, because it is constitutional and makes too much sense. Pass a law that allows us citizens to trade our politicians in for "cash for clunkers". I'll only ask 25 cents for each one traded!

To junk a usable car and buy a new one will require far more energy to produce the car than to keep driving the old one. Another example of runaway government spending .

I think that the name of this program should not be "Cash for Clunkers". I think it should be "GAS GUZZLERS TO THE GRAVEYARD". A lot of people own old clunkers that do not qualify because they get good gas mileage. The above title would better reflect the real purpose of the program.

Where in the Constitution does it say that the government has this authority?

Dear congress and president giggles, I wish you would quit spending then taxing us to death. Stop the insanity!
Sit Tight Voters | 1:19 p.m. July 11, 2009
Depending on your employment and financial portfolio is what determines whether you buy another vehicle or not. To buy new--NO! It's one thing to rescue these companies it's another to bottle feed them. Just make sure you stay within your means and DO NOT BUY anything outside of it. Incidentely a vehicle purchase is probaly the worst investment someone on shakey ground can do. Fix and repair the clunker let the chips fall where they may with the auto companies. Same for real estate and other non essential items. SAVE SAVE SAVE!
Scrap DC first | 1:45 p.m. July 11, 2009
The best thing we could do would be to get rid of all the people in DC who think our tax dollars are theirs to spend any way they can dream up. Cow fart studies to support the "myth" of global warming? Bailouts of the auto unions by stealing from the actual company owners and taxpayers to do it? Where does it end? Who died and made them kings and queens? What's in the water there that drops their IQs 100 pts when they take their oaths? "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic..." Support and defend the Constitution, they're walking all over it! Who's the domestic enemy now, Congress? (Sorry, rhetorical question)

Whoa! This is another insane idea from this administration.
Matthias Habermann | 5:17 p.m. July 11, 2009
They did/do a program like it in Germany, as mentioned on the article.

Its insane... people just see free money. Its crazy. Sales just jumped but i am so certain that eventually they will drop to a record low once the incentive is gone and most people bought a new car.

I am curious to see what good it will do to you and your economy. Maybe your people arent as hyped about getting "free" money as they are here.

Actually, my car's on its last legs, and I was about to trash it and buy a new one. But now...I think I'll wait another couple months to buy. I didn't need any additional "incentive" other than an old car...But free money? It's going to go to someone. I guess it'll go to me. And to Anyone But General Motors.

great idea the value our older cars will drop because everyone will be buying more mpg. They are less safe and the number of wreaks with deaths will go up plus the cars are toyota's and honda so we will help the japanise economy not our cars. If our congressmen had even a small brain they would of said U.S. made cars only. Of course these small cars will only fit half your family and if your tall forget it. Another stupid idea lobbied by our green friends
What A Waste! | 11:11 p.m. July 11, 2009
Once it gets rolling later this month, the program will offer incentives of $3,500 or $4,500 to those who buy or lease a more energy-efficient new vehicle. The goal is to get people to trade in a qualifying gas-guzzler – car, sport utility vehicle or light truck – for a comparable vehicle that gets substantially more miles per gallon. ...

The real goal & intent is to use tax-payer money to pay for business interests, get people to buy cars they can't afford, create a stigma/ego for those that drive the 'gas-guzzler'/'glorified lawn-mower'.

If everybody traded in their SUV/Truck, what would happen to the recreation industry, they would then need a bailout, because you can't pull a boat/rv/atv/jet-ski with a prius.

Along with the fact that whenever the government gets its hands into anything, it becomes a joke & costs the tax-payers more money!

i agree with all of you, i work in a toyota dealership, and our sales are down because of all of this hype on cash for clunkers. in reality not everyone will get the voucher for the $3,500-4,500. there are 50 states and a ton of dealerships, and 1billion dollars. im not all that smart but you do the math. my guess is that becuses the goverment now secretly ownes part of GM, they will be the first to get the money, im truly curious to find out if this will really work.
toyotagirl | 1:17 p.m. July 16, 2009
oh and another thought, there are other reasons that people aren't/can't buy, IT'S CALLED UNEMPLOYED. you have to have a job to buy a car.this is not helping the car industury if people are lossing their jobs, homes familys, and cars they may already have. this is the worst i have ever seen the economy in my 27 years of life. not to mention that you are all right im tired to the goverenment rasing my taxes, to pay for the mistakes that the governement and president has made. WE ARE AMERICA(or did we forget that part), not some third world country that lives on bread and rice, with dirty drinking water. we are suppose to live in a world of freedom and happiness. WHERE DID THAT ALL GO ?????? Mr.president and congress i wish you all read these things then you would see how we feel, where is the vote, we voted for you to make it better< yet we havent seen that yet !!! Good Luck hope it gets better soon
Thanks. | 4:04 a.m. July 17, 2009
I have a car that works for the program. I will be trading my old car that i can't sale for $50.00 bucks for $4,500.00. Thanks again american tax payers. your #1. with this trade, i can pick up a new car for about 5 to 6,000.00 bucks, and thats at 0% int. for 60 mo.
