James is 100% correct. A burning ceremony is just over the top and a contrived event. Stop it already. Stop making the flag into another idol to worship. It is merely a symbol, nothing more.

I thought worn out American flags were to be burned in a private, respectful manner, not a public celebration.

Perhaps only people who have defended the Flag in harm's way should be given the responsiblity of properly retiring it. They've paid their dues.

Where is Orrin Hatch when we need him? Clearly we need a constitutional amendment to ban burning flags at public gatherings honoring the flag!
