The government is not oppressive, Wendy. GM asked for help, the government didn't want to get involved. The problem is that GM got too big, and with an tough economy and the threat that losing GM would cause, and have a ripple effect, steps had to be taken to help GM get through it. I don't think you would really like a total free market, Wendy. Think it through a little better. But I do agree that the story warrants more attention than a phony flag/idol burning ceremony meant to manipulate the feelings of the audience. I would worry more about off the wall nutty stuff like that than the government trying to preserve jobs and prevent the economy from worsening.

I am distressed about the government takeover of GM. A liquidation of GM would have been even more distressing, however, and that was the only alternative.

Time to reverse this government intrusion trend which began with George W Bush.

Oh please. You do realize that SOMEONE had to take control, since GM clearly can't take care of itself? And you do realize that SOMEONE HAD to stop GM from going out of business, because if GM does go out of business, millions of people are out of work. It's that big a business.

So stop howling. I'm just happy that SOMETHING is being done.

GM holds many US Military contracts, building vehicles such as the Humvee.

You probably preferred that GM fail, so that anyone could buy the company. Who has the money now? China.

Wendy, why do you want China to own GM?
Why do you want China to own our military secrets?
How would that make us stronger?
Quick question | 10:41 a.m. July 11, 2009
So why didn't the government allow GM to go through bankruptcy BEFORE pouring millions of dollars into it? Oh that's right, the Unions can pull the government strings to get what they want.

If we are so concerned about someone/something becoming "too big," why is there a lack of concern over the GOVERNMENT becoming too big?

UAW (Obama's Buddies) and the US gov owe 89% of GM. Obama gave his cronies at UAW payback for supporting him in the general election. King of Chicago style, and that was the environment MR.B.O.was raised in. You can't expect anything different. If he trully wanted to to make GM into a new company UAW woulf not be in pareternship with the US Goc, It's all about he election in 2010, abd the corronation again in 2012. Those of you who believe MR. O took over the auto industry to rescue it are dreamers. When the airlines failed a few years ago it didn't destroy the economy, and had GM gone into bankruptcy we would have been better off. Some would have lost jobs, but what about the 3000 dealerships Obama closed? Were those jobs lost? Obama has done nothing to solve the recession; he is worsening it with his agenda. For all you Obama worshippers this is his economy. It's been that way for 6 months. Wasn't he supposed to raise the sea level or something whrn he came into office?
to all the govt. sops | 12:35 p.m. July 11, 2009
Letting GM fail would have been the best thing to happen to the company and the country. It would have allowed GM to revamp its business, kick out the unions and the political leaders (obama) who were driving the company into the ground. They could have started over again, leaner and more able to deliver the vehicles the nation desires and needs. Now, we have wasted too much taxpayer money and have the same company different name - Governement Motors. can you say Hugo?

The UAW are America workers who once build the largest corporation on earth by the fruits of their labors.

Conservatives can't accept personal accountability. This is why they are frantically trying to stick blame for their causing a depression on to Obama like, they blamed Carter for inflation and gas crisis that started under Nixon.

Conservatives blame workers and the poor. If you extrapolated their thesis out, conservatives believe American would be better without any workers and all labor could be outsourced to China.

This is really funny. Fox and Rush have gotten chickens to vote for the party of Col. Sanders.

Sam, don't you read? GM entered bankruptcy. GM came out in record time. They sold Humvee to China. You and your fellow followers should feel joy in that.

Conservatives created this mess. Thank you for one thing. Your voting for Bush made Obama's election possible.

The sea level has been rising: check the tidal data.

No facts, can extinguish the hatred within you, that Fox and Rush satisfy. If things work out your way, you can exchanges childish names foe Obama as you stand in a soup line. You can savor your Pyrrhic victory.

This story has been buried because of the Liberal Media. I blame the Liberal Deseret News that has an agenda.

I blame Liberal Media on everything. I'm a conservative and approve of this message.

I don't get it | 4:55 p.m. July 11, 2009
I realize I'm not an expert on the economy, but why are people saying that GM should have gone into bankruptcy when that is exactly what they did. There was a whole article about their getting out of that state this very day on the business page. Did any of you read it?
Would that have somehow been different if the government hadn't stepped in?
And for those of you who don't get it, Obama does NOT own GM, we do, because it was helped with government money, which came from all of us who pay taxes. Where do you get these hare-brained ideas?

How silly peole are,

all this crying about all the terrible things that will happen if government didn't help,

clearly people do NOT understand bankruptcy,

he business will NOT go away,

it just sold off to others, t opay off theor debts.

the business will still be around in some form.

Governt should stay out of it andl et the feee market CORRECT itself,

let BAD businesses fail, so NEW and BETTER ones can take their place.

The body DOESN'T get better if you help the cancer stay around.

What some of you don't understand is that if GM had filed bankruptcy without government money behind them, they would never have emerged. There were too many liabilities, no one would have been willing to step in and take over.
Buy American | 10:59 p.m. July 11, 2009
Buy American made products and jobs will come back to america. Or you can buy cheap worthless Chinese made products subsidized by their government and continue to watch good paying jobs go oversea's.
MetricWrench | 8:05 a.m. July 12, 2009
The idea that GM should not be allowed to fail is as big of a load of garbage as the cars and trucks that they have produced for the last 30 years. Nobody has moved more manufacturing outside of the US than GM. There products are not even all that "American" anymore. If you want to buy the most American made Pickup truck in the world you better visit your local Toyota dealer.
