Snakes attempt to avoid people, but will bite if surprised, threatened

I ran into a snake this year while out 4-wheeling. It was in the middle of the
road. As I approached the snake, it started to chase me down the trail. I had
to reverse the wheeler for quite a ways while the snake kept after me. It
finally slithered off of the road and let me pass. Apparently the theory that
snakes will try to avoid people is not always true.
