Jazz payroll is $3.1 million over tax

That kind of money to play a game!
Utah is making the team of the future this year and it is important that they let the right players go and get the right players back at the right price.
We know this team is not good enough to compete with the elite teams as it is defensively challenged. It can't win until it gets players who will play defense. It probably can't win until it gets more athletic players and better outside shooters at more positions. It is also weak on rebounding.
Continuity is the worst thing that could happen.
KOC and Sloan have a bias toward not changing. They play it safe all of the time and that is guaranteed to create a loser in this environment.
Management and philosophy has to change or the Jazz are going nowhere. Now is the time to make much needed changes.
Completely beyond control yes.
All you AK busters are nuts?
Look at what he has done for the team while starting and then coming off the bench then starting then coming off the bench, WHICH MOST NBA MORONS WOULD DO AS FAST AS THEY WOULD FLY TO THE MOON.
WE WIN WHEN AK PLAYS WELL AND WE DONT WHEN HE DOESN'T,PERIOD!
TRADE HIM AND WE ARE BACK TO 40 WINS A YEAR.
AND BY THE WAY THE JAZZ AND OCONNER KNOW IT!
KEEP HIM AND WILLIAMS WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY HAVE DONE WITH CONTRACTS.
THE JAZZ ARE SMART AND SAVIE ORGANIZATION AND ALL OF YOU WITH YOUR BASKETBALL IQ'S OF 3 OR 4 ARE UP IN THE NIGHT.
THAT IS TWO GUYS YOU CAN BUILD A TEAM AROUND AND THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY ARE DOING.
DO YOU REALLY THINK IF JERRY HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT HE WOULD TRADE HIS BEST ALL AROUBD PLAYER?
NO CHANCE!
SALARY CAP LESSON!!
You can not just trade away salary without taking it in return. League rules stipulate you must take at least 75% of the value of the contract you are trading.
Translation:
Unless you plan to trade several of our players for other players with EXACTLY 75% of the value of their contract...there is no way the jazz are getting under the cap.
Example:
Boozer @ 12.7 million....one of our biggest salaries besides AK.
Hypothetically you have to find a player with a contract that is exactly a 9.5 million contract to get the absolute maximum salary dumping affect. Make the Booz trade and you have only reduced your salary by 3 million.
We have not signed Millsap or our 3rd PG yet.
As the article states we will be 9 million+ over if we sign Millsap to a conservative deal.
Much easier said than done.
The Jazz WILL be paying luxury tax--it is just a matter of how much.
The other obvious factor is what kind of players/team do you have left after "stepping down" in value for all these trades?
Diddly and Squat!
"sloanaholic"
I love this "championship squad"
Unless.......Sloanie and His holicsie allow get the ball become Loyola Marymount get off a shot in 6-8 seconds.....
At least go down entertaining maybe we win 140-138
DUH AND DOYYYY
Blow the Jazz up and start over!

Pistons-Jazz still talking about Boozer for Hamilton swap
Talks continue between the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz about a Carlos Boozer(notes)-Rip Hamilton trade, according to the News-Herald in Northern Ohio.
Hamilton didn't fit with Allen Iverson(notes) this season, and he won't fit with newly acquired Ben Gordon(notes). In fact, Gordon has become Iverson. He has no conscience when taking shots.

Fire Kevin!
It's al about the Benjamin's with these guys. No loyalty. Considering a back-up role from a divisional rival is brutal.
If we are going to spend the money I would go for Lee over Milsap without thinking twice about it. If we are going to spend BIG then make sure we get the best bang for our buck. Get Lee.
Because the game of bball is at least 50% mental toughness and attitude, you get unpredictable things like AK getting a huge contract and almost instantly starting downhill fast, Boozer getting an injury here and there and letting his fears and ego get the best of him, and so on. You can't blame Kevin for not foreseeing those things.
On the other hand, picking Williams over Paul has, I think, proven to be the right move. Getting Okur was smart - Okur does great things for the Jazz and has a great attitude. Drafting Millsap and Brewer were smart moves.
Kevin's doing just fine, and will continue to make smart moves. Just let him do his job - which is tough enough without having morons offering contradictory advice thinking they could do better.
If Millsap goes replace him with a cheap back up PF or let AK and Koufos cover and pick up a couple of minimum practice players to get to 13 players.
Buy out Harp or trade him for picks. His contract is non guaranteed.
Make one trade before the dead line that includes a non guaranteed contract coming back.
KOC is not the problem. The problem was L Miller and maybe J Sloan and his system's need for continuity.
The Jazz need a culture change (it is starting now).
They need to model after POR who has a better team and is under the cap. That means trading when a good trade opportunity exists instead of doing nothing hoping continuity will improve the team. The Jazz also need to get more 2nd round picks (cheap) and keep the best.
They also need to model after SA. Get the franchise PF (not Boozer or Millsap) and then build around DWill and the PF. Rotate role players whenever needed.

It's almost tip time at the Spectrum as Utah State prepares to take on...
Didnt Bingham already beat Alta this year?
Excellent choice Mr. Congressman! I am an Independent for this very reason....
Keep dreaming PC will not beat Hurricane by 21. I would be more likely to...
BYU should clearly be ranked higher than Oklahoma now.
Yeah and you can't stop Bingham's GREAT running game, Bingham has the best...
The Utes (8-1, 5-0) won their sixth straight and scored their most points...
I actual agree with Mike Richard's on this one!!!!!
Hey Howard- I hate to break this to you, you have no chance against TCU next...
This was a very well written and considered article. Thanks.
It's the Dave Mathews. We love Dave Mathews! He is really good. Maquett...

Add a couple of cheap minimum salary players. If one of them is an athletic taller PF that would be nice.
Sometime this year a trade will need to be made for a PF who will be the starter of the future. That trade will probably get the Jazz under the cap.
If necessary Koufos can play back PF and Fez can play back up C until the Jazz reload via trades.
