Utah Jazz: Blazers may offer Millsap a contract
124 comments | Read story
Utah needs to look around for a young, taller, athletic PF they can get for cheap for insurance.
For this year, until there is a trade, Koufos can play back up PF and Fez can play back up C.
When the Jazz make a trade later this year they hopefully can get the PF of the future and maybe a shooting SG.
Too bad they were not aggressive in the draft. They could have moved up a few spots in the second round for cheap and gotten Blair and replaced Millsap instead of letting SA steal him. But that is the Jazz, slow, timid, conservative and not very smart.
Who cares if Blair has no knees. If you got this season out of him it would be worth it. He may start for SA at the 4. He will play for SA this year.
The Jazz are slow.
Boozer, Aldridge isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I hope the Jazz don't match some ridiculous offer - we got ourselves into this mess by unnecessarily over-paying, I would hate to see us do it again.
While I do love your play Paul, the Jazz can't afford to pay 9 million per year for a second string undersized power forward.
Still ... you'd be a knucklehead to not accept that kind of offer. So, no hard feelings if you do end up leaving. Your behavior and play with the Jazz has been exemplary.
Then there is O'Connor who honestly has put the Jazz in the position that they are now with his contract work with current players and while everyone else is getting better it honestly seems like O'Connor is totally clueless on what is going on around him.
Either he is very good at not showing anyone his hand or he truly is clueless. Either way the Jazz salary is the worst deal in the NBA. They are over the luxury tax and will have a team that will maybe finish 4th in the west
That would leave a huge hole to fill in the 'toughness' category.
I think milsap is a fine player, and has high potential of starting and being a very effective player on any team...maybe even an allstar. But right now, without any proof of that, he is not worth more than 5-7 million a year. If in the next few seasons, he becomes great and putting up boozer numbers and good D, than boost him into 10 million range, but definately not now.
I think a lot of teams are staying away because he wants so much...which is perfect for the jazz.
Millsap will be the back up PF and he sounds like he will be the highest paid player on the team. Prichard is pretty unconventional and often makes trades but it is unlikely he is going to trade Aldridge who currently is making less than Millsap is supposed to get. Millsap could be useful in holding down Aldridge next year as he is a RFA as is Brandon Roy.
In other words POR has 4 important players they need to resign next year. Overpaying Millsap does not make a lot of sense (just like with OKC). However, going after Turkoglu did not make a lot of sense either.
This looks like it could be a harassment offer for just above the mle with maybe a signing bonus. That would cost Utah to match it. If they got Millsap they could trade him after this year but I would expect Blake, Outlaw, Aldridge and Roy to get a lot more than they are getting even in a bad market next year.
Millsap doesn't want to play behind Boozer, but says he is ok behind Aldridge. Makes no sense. Boozer is older and could be out of town next year, Aldridge is going nowhere soon. I think this says Paul is looking for one thing, MONEY. Kind of ironic that the guy leaving to chase more money is the guy Jazz fans have fallen in love with because he seems so willing to be a team player.
I'd say Millsap pulled a fast one over all the Boozer haters who love Millsap and extremely overrate him.
PLEASE stop running that silly photo of Millsap holding his head. Don't you have any other stock photos of him? We've seen that one on every Millsap-related article for the past month.
CLE is trying to buy a championship. Varajao is an anomalie and will probably get over paid. Marion is a 4 way trade with Stackhouse being dumped and Cuban has always over paid and in the luxury tax.
The Jazz are not and should not make a concrete offer. Millsap and agent were not reasonable on starting price. The Jazz told him to go get an offer (none). We will see what Prichard offers but it is likely to be just over the mle with some type of front loading for one year (poison pill).
Millsap may be worth that to POR or could be traded after this year to clear space to re-sign POR's FAs.
Millsap may not be worth that to Utah in the long run. They have other options in a bad market. 2010 is going to be an even worse market. A one year contract replacing Millsap for this year may be a better move.
Koufos can play back up PF until a Boozer trade is done. His adjusted numbers are as good as Millsap's.
Accusing Paul of going for the money, what would they do in similar circumstances? Sounding like the money is coming from their own wallet rather than that of a franchise that has been collecting millions in luxury tax over the past 5 seasons.
Paying Paul 4 million a year is fine but 7 million is beyond belief by the faint hearted and fickle Utah fan. Jazz collected more than the 3 million difference in luxury tax payments just from last year.
Bottom line is if we want Paul on our team keep him regardless, if we think as was suggested that there is a taller, better PF out there who will gladly play for less money then we should get him instead, or that Koufous is now suddenly a sound NBA forward who overnight has become a force to be reckoned with.
Get over the money thing period! Build around good solid players who can help you win. Jazz were very much aware they would have one season paying the salary cap, this is it.
Paul hasn't proved he can be a starter for 82 games, but look at what some of the FA are getting now. 7-8 million a year with worse stats than PM has, the market talks.
Don't put the blame on KOC about the salaries this year. LHM ok'd all these contracts and knew this year was a killer, Larry did it, especially AK's contract, his worse business decision ever. Plus the salary and tax ceilings are going down next year and you just can't say we need to trade AK, his contract is keeping him here. As far as signing CJ, that's what your super star PG wanted.
Why the Blazers can do this, because of Paul....Allen.
So Millsap and his agent were looking for a deal at $10M when FA started. Did you want O'Connor to step in and offer a "concrete" contract at that price?
Most players and agents have found the market is soft. They're not getting the deals they want. Only a few teams have cap space. Detroit gave hefty contracts to Gordon and Villanueva. Hedo is getting a nice deal. Other than that, not much happening.
Millsap was waiting for David Lee to "set the market." Ironically, it now appears Paul will get a bigger contract, even though Lee is the better player and has proven he is a legit starter. But Lee wanted $12M/per. Now he'll be forced to either play for NY's QO or sign a deal for the MLE.
Hate to lose Millsap and make a division rival better, but $9M is way too much for Millsap.
Boozer, AK and Koufos can man the position this season. Then we can draft a PF with the NY pick next summer.
You're upset that the Jazz didn't move up in the second round to draft a short, overweight, power forward with no ACLs? I'm surprised you haven't been contacted to help with player evaluations.
1. LA-defending champs enough said unless Lamar leaves.
2. SA-Blair,Jefferson,Mc D plus the big 3.
3. Denver-could be switched for Dallas.
4. Dallas-Magnus' fav Gortat + Marion
5. Portland-More lottery talent than anyone if Oden improves watchout they could be in the 3 slot!!
6. YOUR UTAH JAZZ! ARE JAZZ FANS HAPPY WITH THIS RANKING AND PAYING LUXURY TAX TO BE AN AFTER THOUGHT! (PS if no one gets injured? we maybe get a 4 seed at best a 3)
Here is one drastic move. Trade Booz this year, AK in 010 for cap space, sign Okur to and extension let Milsap walk at 8 million and use two lottery picks next year plus some cap space to sign a free agent and start over. Why pay the luxury tax for a team that has no shot....and I mean NO SHOT to win a championship. Re-tool this roster KO!!
That effectively replaces Millsap for under a million and gives a lot of cap relief.
Let POR over pay Millsap. However, this many just be more smoke out of Millsap's agent uncle. He fanned the speculation on OKC when there was nothing.
8 millionish...no way!!
Paul you are a good player with a great approach to the game but....not that great.
Good thing for Millsap there always seems to be a team or two who overpay for players.
Does not seem to make a lot of sense to pay that much for a backup but then again..Paul Allen has the cash to not really care that much.
FOR ALL YOU WHINING BABIES COMPLAINING ABOUT THE JAZZ NOT SIGNING ALL THESE FREE AGENTS...GIVE IT A REST!!! I would not want 90% of the free agents that have been signed.
Close your eyes and drift back to last preseason. We all believed, as did the experts, that the Jazz would contend for the title.
The ONLY reason we did not is because of injuries..that is the only difference and yet everyone acts like we have a scrub team or something.
I may not love some of our players but IF we by chance remain healthy this year I bet we easily finish with one of the top 3 records.
Guaranteed!!
Especially if Millsap does not go.
With Paul goes one of the Booz-bashers favorite arguments, too...chasing the almighty dollar.
I am not sure why Portland is interested in Millsap - (Millsap starting numbers are 16 and 10) Why sign a back up when you have Odon and Aldredge as their starting 2 bigs with Pryzibilla and Millsap as backups) Portland really needs a small forward and a point guard. If I was Portland, I would be pushing for Odom with the same intensity as they pushed for Turk. But I am not a GM
The Jazz should offer Boozer for Pryzibilla. Portland is under the cap so that works straight up.
This brings the Jazz salary with Millsap and Prizibilla instead of Boozer at 74 million. The Jazz can release Harpring at the trade line and be under the cap.
If Jazz management keeps Boozer (a player who has disenfranchised himself to the fans, is always injured, never plays deference, cost 4 or 5 million over what Millsap is going to get paid and is on the down slide of his career - turning 28) over Millsap. This is absolutely Bonehead.
The Jazz have lots of options and need to be patient. They will be just as strong without Millsap if they get the right couple of players in the short run for the minimum and then trade Boozer/Korver/Harp later in the year or just use the FA market in 2010.
There are options out there that give the Jazz enough flex for cheap. They can get by while they get the right players for the long run.
This team with or without Millsap was only a playoff team anyway.
They have the mle to get a back up PF or they can trade Harp. Both approaches are cheaper than matching a bad Millsap offer. AK and Koufos can play PF if necessary until a trade happens.
hahaha!!!!!
Okur
Bosh
Brewer
Hamilton
Williams
as the starting 5!? Talk about a ring waiting to happen. Does anyone know if this trade would work? I want to know!
