Jaime, you need to cross the border of Pakistan, Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Myanmar, any country in the middle east. Your reception will not be friendly. You need to travel more! Your bias shows your ignorance.

This letter raises some good points. We need to change the mind-set on the immigration issue. The current approach, including turning the U.S. into an armed fortress, is not working. Besides, I wonder if the immigrant issue is really a problem which outweighs the benefits, or if it more fear of change.
Re: Anonymous | 8:23 a.m. July 9, 2009
Since when has the US become an "armed fortress"? A few guys riding back and forth in SUVs is hardly a fortress. No, if we got serious about patrolling the borders, then we wouldn't have an immigration problem.

And, yes, there is probably a fear of change. The US is becoming more and more like Little Mexico. I enjoy visiting the place, but I don't want to live there. And, of course, as this and Globalization continues, there will be more and more pressure to drop our standard of living down to their level.

I have no doubt it is fear of change! Why would our border with Canada be completely unprotected, and our border with Mexico need to be walled, fenced and guarded. People want that border protected with the same intensity we are sending troops to Afghanistan.
Sounds like the.... | 8:52 a.m. July 9, 2009
illegal border crossers in this country need to head south to chile. Why do we always get the same inane logic from the left? Leftist thinking: "Can we just take 3 steps backward - like all the other countries? That would make it fair, and it sure works for them." I've said it before, and I will say it again- You can't argue with airheads.
huh? | 9:02 a.m. July 9, 2009
I have no problem with anyone crossing a border. Just do it legally please.
Why is that so hard to understand?
Ernest T. Bass | 9:25 a.m. July 9, 2009
Jaime: A letter writer at the d-news finally gets it. They are here just to survive.
Bigots hate the fact that most of them cross the border for nothing more than an opportunity.
If any of the bigots were born in a similar situation, they would do EXACTLY THE SAME THING. That is, if they had any courage.
The bigots need to move to Souther Mexico or Guatamala and attempt to eek out a living with no education.
I think their perception would change very quickly.
Hypocrisy | 10:19 a.m. July 9, 2009
Anyone can prove points by comparing extremes to other extremes. Chile has no borders... While a country like Russia most certainly does.

The United States can't support Illegal Immigration because it takes too much of a toll on our social programs.

Either immigrate legally or face the consequences. It really is THAT SIMPLE.

What a great redirect call it Bigotry. No the issue is slavery, still. It has always been. Those who say the issue is complicated are just to comfortable with our new slaves. We don't own them and keep them on plantations... no we give a battle cry of someone just wanting a chance, house them in slums, provide translation services, enable codependant behavior, and do everything we can to cloud the issue because we are all to comfortable owning slaves. We need our slaves to do all the menial tasks that are beneath our slothful children. No... shame on every US Citizen who just won't call it what it is- slavery for the new century. We've done a pretty good job of repackaging and reselling a diabolic practice into a pathos driven facade of opportunity With a cry to just "give them a chance." My ancestors immigrated from Germany, legally, and learned english so they could contribute to Society and have a chance, not sap its resources and demand more governmental programs. For me it is simple: "End slavery- stop illegal immigration." If live is so bad in their country then revolution... cowards run away.

Pakistan, Russia, China, and Cuba are not our enemies!
I know lots of people who have been to Russia and China, they said the people were very nice.
I hardly doubt the people of Cuba would be belligerent. It sounds like YOU need to travel more, your bias is showing through, you should not believe what Fox News says about these countries! I think people in Utah are pretty ignorant of other countries and cultures. People in general are usually pretty tolerant of other cultures all around the globe. What's with this attitude that the USA is better than every other country? And what's up with labeling these countries you listed as enemies?
Style and grace - LOL! | 10:49 a.m. July 9, 2009
You can always spot the Limbaughites by the way in which they communicate:

And these same people can't understand why Colin Powell, (a Republican) cautions about America becoming tired of nasty and losing every election.

While in Europe, there were many Americans working off the books to stay in Europe. Did Ernest Hemingway have work documents to work in France and Spain?

We're next door to a second or third-world nation. Mexican citizens have been immigrating continuously into the US since 1848 when we basically took a chunk of Mexico. Ambitious, adventerous, curious and desparate people from everywhere have immigrated here for over 100 years. 2 broad oceans couldn't keep them out. There is no way a fence or any other method will keep out Mexican immigrants. The bigotry element to this delimma has always been there. The solution: green card all undocumented immigrants and provide them citizenship after 5 years of faithful service. They deserve it as much as you or I deserve to be here. We were extremely lucky and they weren't. So,ignore the bigotry, love our fellow sons and daughters of God and share what God has generously given to us.
Re: Sonofamerica | 11:39 a.m. July 9, 2009
So, we're supposed to give citizenship to anyone who is able to make it to the US? Talk about bigotry. Do you hate the blacks and asians that don't happen to have a convenient border to the US? I'm surprised you don't advocate giving US citizenship to anyone in the World that wants it.

Darrel | 12:11 p.m. July 9, 2009
@RE: Sonofamerica

I didn't see him put any qualifier on any race wanting citizenship. I think his solution is fantastic! Green carding will allow us to be able to document EVERYONE in the country. This will better allow us to track the criminal activity that everyone thinks every immigrant is perpetrating. This will allow them to become productive members of society.
Pretty naive | 1:09 p.m. July 9, 2009
Yes, all the non criminals, will be willing to stand in line to get signed up for their green card, while the rest continue to sneak across the border. I'm sure the green card will almost certainly guarantee upstanding productiveness. If you bleeding heart bigots have so much compassion, why don't you start by getting your checkbook out and contributing to the effort of helping the poor citizens of the world. Don't wait for the rest of us to join in - lead the way. Volunteer your time by heading outside the border and offer you help, and resources to serving others. You claim to be so much more enlightened in these matters. Don't compell the rest of us to put up with you polyanna theories, and notions.

Christ would smile if we erased the lines on our maps. Is it greed that makes us not want to drop our elite lifestyle to help out a third world country?

To Anonymous 1:18,

"Christ would smile if we erased the lines on our maps."

???

It is fanatic statements like yours that give religion a bad name.

Why is it that people claim Utahns are ignorant of the real world? I'd venture to guess that Utah has more people who have lived outside the US (because of missions) than other states that are supposedly not ignorant or are "enlightened." I think those doing the name-calling should look in the mirror. They may see who is truly ignorant.

"What lies at the end of the street? (asks the new high school student).
"Why - NOTHING!" exclaims the local students (wondering why anyone would ask such a silly question)

- From the classic film "Pleasantville"

When did I ever say I hated intollerent people??
Not once have I said that. I simply point out why they are wrong. Thats it.

Darrel,

"I have no doubt it is fear of change! Why would our border with Canada be completely unprotected, and our border with Mexico need to be walled, fenced and guarded. People want that border protected with the same intensity we are sending troops to Afghanistan."

You have to keep the colored people at bay but all the whites from Canada are free to come and go as they please because they accept our culture and way of life and don't want to change it. As for those Hispanics and especially the Mexicans. Well we need to treat them like we treated the Native Americans.

If you haven't figured it out by now. I am being sarcastic. The level of racism behind immigration policy is quite clear. In the good old days it was more obvious where actual races were singled out by race and denied immigration.

Then when we couldn't get away with that anymore we went to quotas by country which allowed us to stem the flow of undesirables. That is where we are at now. Immigration quotas were intended to keep non-whites out and Supreme Court decisions even stated as much.
Mind your own affairs | 2:47 a.m. July 10, 2009
We know that a Mexican without any family in the U.S. who wants to do something except farm work has almost no legal way to enter the country and even a man with family in the U.S. must wait from 6 to 22 years for a visa depending on what his relationship is to those Americans

So what's the solution to the immigration problem? Open up our borders to anyone who wishes to come to the U.S. to visit, live or work and only restrict access to the U.S. to those who are known criminals or who pose public health or national security threat. Second, if they work they pay income taxes; if they rent or buy property then they pay property taxes; and if they buy something they pay sales taxes like everyone else.

Then the issue becomes what the requirements are to become a U.S. citizen which should be a separate issue from whose allowed to be in the country. Once we do that we eliminate the immigration problem and replace it with a fair immigration and naturalization process.

No one owns this country and can't say who lives with me
@naruto | 7:06 a.m. July 10, 2009
I never labeled those countries enemies. its just that you can't wander into those countries without entering legally. Those girls recently captured and jailed in North Korea are the example of what I am referring to.

At anon= I don't listen to Rush. Nice try to label me, dolt.
