Real Salt Lake: RSL wants friendly success

The first RSL game I went to was Real Madrid. Since then I have been to probably 20 games, and I have always brought people with me. If they had not played Real Madrid, in all likelihood I would not have been to any of those games. Big games win fans. As such, I would argue that international games in the past have been money makers.

I have no interest in the Mexican League and will not be going to the Club America game, just like I did not go the the Santos Laguna or Pachuca games. I would go to a game if they brought in a Brazilian team. How many fans are going to be lost when we consistently see teams like the Galaxy playing AC Milan and Barcelona in the same year and we watch Pachuca and Saprissa.

I am not saying we need to see Manchester United or Real Madrid every year. Surely Fulham wouldn't be so expensive. Besides, it isn't like they have to lay down sod for every game. Why would a big game have to be part of the season ticket package? Look at how TFC is handling Madrid.

Not only that, but I have bought RSL merchandise and so have people I have brought to games. How are those games not profitable? It isn't like we have to lay down sod anymore.

LA plays Barcelona and Real Madrid. Several other teams are playing one of the two. How long before people get tired of seeing nothing but Mexican teams when teams around the league are seeing some of the worlds best? It doesn't have to be every year, but it really needs to happen sometimes. TFC is playing Real Madrid this year. To help defray the cost, they are having the season ticket holders buy tickets too. That brings the ticket price down.

Mexican and Costa Rican teams are not a draw for me. I wouldn't seeing Brazilian teams, or even some of the lower EPL teams. Surely Fulham couldn't be so expensive.

Maybe we can steal one or two of their strikers??

I will be going to the game this saturday, Mexican teams are not the best but they've been playing much better roles in international competitions, They have proven that their game is becoming more competitive internationally.

I am a HUGE RSL fan but I would be VERY hard pressed to pay more than $50 a ticket to see them play another team. An average price of $200...give me a break!

It depends on the team they bring in. If it is Real Madrid, people will fly to SLC to see the game. If it is Fulham, not so much. The bigger the team, the more fans around, and the more expensive the ticket. That makes sense to me. I have season tickets, but would definately pay to see a top Euro-Brazil-Argi team. I'll be there this weekend.

BTW - Exhibition games are awesome in soccer.

I have been to a few of the international friendlies over the years: Catolica(Chile), Harbor View FC(Jamaica), Santos Laguna(Mexico), Boca Jrs.(Argentina). All were pretty good games but the one constant is that it's an away atmosphere for RSL. The only times there hasn't been a huge presence of other supporters is when they played Harbor View FC and Catolica. I know that this is just a big money game for Checketts and the front office but it's pretty depressing to look around and see that the stands are filled with the oppositions supporters. How many people honestly believe that the Barra Real won't cheer for Club America this weekend? They will change their RSL jerseys for Club America.
Per Manning from the article: "acknowledges it will be increasingly tougher to schedule European super clubs anytime soon." Well nobody told Seattle, LA Galaxy or even Toronto FC. The Sounders will play Chelsea and FC Barcelona, LA is set to play AC Milan and FC Barcelona, and even Toronto can get a game with Madrid. So Manning's argument just shows that RSL would rather be content with scheduling a Mexican Club? Sad!

La Barra Real will not change it's jerseys. You cannot wear another teams jersey and sit in the section. Also, not all are from Mexico. There is a good group from all over South and Central America.

I'm glad for the verification. I wasn't meaning anything bad against the Barra Real b/c they are some of the most passionate fans that there are @ the stadium on game day. They frankly have been taken for granted one to many times by the front office with the pole fiasco on the south end. I'm certainly glad that we have a great group of supporters b/c frankly without Barra Real there would be NO ATMOSPHERE at the games. I would love to come and sit with you guys for some upcoming games. It would sure beat getting yelled when I try and stand up on the North end. POLE MUST GO CAMPAIGN needs to go into full force!
