In our opinion: Editorial: A smart veto

This could only be the beginning, but first you need
a council committed to tax reduction, not only in the recession / depression. Nationally there are an estimated 16.5 % of the population either unemployed or underemployed.

If it means taxes go down proportionately then there's something good might come out of "the current economic climate". Still, it seems unlikely to happen long term in the "liberal" Salt
Lake area.

It's only when people are being hit hard that they get any sense. As long as it's someone else that is suffering the consequences we're suckers for increasing taxes.
Corroon for Governor | 9:17 a.m. July 8, 2009
The taxpayters of Salt Lake County got what they asked for when they voted for a nine member council form of government. As individuals, the previous 3 council members were a joke, but they were a lot cheaper to feed and maintain than nine members with their aids, cars, offices, and personal agendas. Sadly, there's no going back.

Mayor Corroon is the best thing that ever happened to SL Co. government. We should all hope that he runs for governor - and wins.

Until the Bush tax cuts including numerous capital gains tax cuts that benefit the entire population, are extended (they expire in 2010) there will not be investment or spending. The neo-socialists are ideological opposed to tax cuts, so continue to plan your lives accordingly.

Americans have shown over and over again that they want the government to provide the services that it provides. The fact that they don't want to pay the taxes to provide the services shows an astounding lack of maturity. I'm not arguing against Corroon's veto, a recession is always the wrong time to raise taxes.

I'm more than willing to pay an extra $10 bucks a year so that those people in the S.L.County government don't have to lose their jobs, and thus their contribution to our local economy. I do like Corroon though. He is well balanced, plans well, and cares about the environment and open space.

I work for SLCo and I am not a resident of SLCo. I applaud Corroon's decision to be principled even in the most difficult situations. The Council may accuse him of playing politics ( eventhough that is a constant for them). I would accuse him of being a man of integrity who does what he says he will do and then does it. The employees of SLCo will take the hit, but principally I whole heartedly agree with the Mayor.

Carron; now show us the right way on illegal aliens. You know what the majority wants, do it!

Anonynous---

You are more than welcome to pay the $10--No one is stopping you. Just send them a check. I only ask that you don't make everyone else pay just because you want to.

Mr. Corroon did well in vetoing the bill. Taking money out of public pockets and putting it into gov. pockets has never helped a recession.

Protecting government jobs will only cost private jobs. Either I get to spend my money-that I worked hard for-on what I want, or government types steal it from me and allocate it where they want.

I say, let the people spend their own money.
