I thought that most Utahns followed the Word of Wisdom, but you'd never know with all of the WHINE on these boards.

Mr. Adams: Good letter.
Anonymous | 2:48 a.m. July 6, 2009
Obama does have a bit of magic--his personality, his looks, his ability to work with both men and women in Congress and his cabinet. I think he casts quite a spell on those who work for him That may be part of the dilemna

Has Mack Adams ever been out of this United States or is he a fictionary person.

Has he ever been treated medically outside of the United States?

If he was president, how would he resolve the problem.

To much time wasted on complaining about the crisis instead of solving the crisis.

Are you a Doer or a Talker?

Do it. Solve it.

Obama is a liar. "If you make less than 250,000 your taxes will not go up". Watch what cap and trade does to your utility bill. All because of the tax he puts on businesses so that he can say they passed it on to you, but he didn't do it.
Sally in England | 5:45 a.m. July 6, 2009
Well Mack, just to let you know, in England just about everyone I know is happy with our health service. That is alot of people. SO now you know people who are happy!!!
@KJB | 5:46 a.m. July 6, 2009
You obviously don't. If you did your wisdom would tell you we're right.
Folks  | 6:04 a.m. July 6, 2009
Like KJB never have figured out just what health plan would be good for him or her. But KJB most likely owns a VW or Subaru (with a Obama sticker on it) and is currently withdrawing $500.00 per week unemployment checks until the next ACORN jo becomes available in 3 1/2 years.
Anonymous | 6:56 a.m. July 6, 2009
America was "brought to its knees" eight years ago when preemptive war, illegal wire-tapping of its citizens and surplus disappearing and replaced with deficit.
Thank God for President Obama!
To KJB | 6:59 a.m. July 6, 2009
So far, one post, one whiner.
Ultra Bob | 7:00 a.m. July 6, 2009
It is the “brothers of hate” such as the writer of this letter that has brought America to her knees. The tremendous debt that is being by the Obama government is being spent on the people of America. The tremendous debt of the previous government was simply a robbing of the American public for the benefit of evil corporations who willingly killed thousands of people including over 4000 Americans for Capitalists profits.

Obama may fail, do mainly to the efforts of people like Mack Adams, but if he does, America will also fail. No one else is doing anything to help.
Dear KJB at 12:19 | 7:06 a.m. July 6, 2009
Because Liberals don't have the facts on their side, they fight with ad hominem attacks. You are trying to change the subject. The president that you voted for is spending trillions of dollars that we don't have, and wants to spend even more on a failed model of health care.

That is not whining, that is voicing a legitimate concern about an unconstitutional agenda by this president.
Johnny Canuck | 7:15 a.m. July 6, 2009
Most canucks are happy with their health care.
Cats | 7:22 a.m. July 6, 2009
I think "Sally" in England must be a fictional character. I know MANY people who have received medical care in England and couldn't believe how bad it was.

I love England with all my heart, but She has made a lot of serious mistakes in running headlong into socialism. Please, let us not follow. We are the land of freedom, opportunity and personal responsibility. We are the shining city on the hill. Please, let's not let these people destroy our country.
RE: Sally in England | 7:23 a.m. July 6, 2009
Sally, you're happy because you don't know any better.

If you've never had prompt service before, what's there to complain about when you consistently have to wait for care?

Heaven forbid you or your friends have to get a new kidney or come down with cancer and have to get on one of those dreaded waiting lists. A neighbor and friend of mine from England said, just like you, that generally the Brits are happy with their care, but the delays for more serious issues are real, and the taxes that pay for it all are horrendous.

Not a trade I'm excited to make. Lowering the standard for everyone is NOT an improvement over what we have now.
Anonymous | 7:37 a.m. July 6, 2009
Come on, Mack, get real.

"America has been brought to its knees" If is has, it happened under the watch of the prior Administration. The "tremendous debt, loss of jobs and loss of homes" is the Bush legacy. Obama has only been in office 5 months. If you were not so driven by this silliness, you would realize that these problems were part of the reason the AMERICAN public voted to change.

"President Obama continually pushes his health plan, but he never points to another country where the people are happy with theirs." Uh, where have you been? We spend the most on health care and rank about 47th in the world in healthiness. So much for an efficient system. Instead of protecting the status quo, which is really about protecting the corporate interests, how about stepping up for AMERICANS who don't reap the massive profits from the current system. It's all about money, not our health and well-being.

"He is not a magic man." Who said he was? If he was, he could make the moneygrabbers in Congress go away.

To Ultra Bob | 7:55 a.m. July 6, 2009
So you are saying if Obama fails it is the fault of all those Americans who won't jump on his bandwagon? Wow, only in office six months and you have already found a scapegoat for him.

Barack Obama is like a run-away train without an engineer. He needs to slow down and think before he causes even more damage.

KM | 7:58 a.m. July 6, 2009
Obama is certainly a magician. While we are looking at his left hand his right hand is stealing us blind.
RedShirt | 8:15 a.m. July 6, 2009
If the problem is affordability, why is it that the government isn't going to do anything about the costs?

If the government enacts tort reforms that make suing for medical malpractice more difficult, this is one thing Canada did.

Next, reduce the amount of government mandated coverage, and allow insurance companies to allow people to pick their coverage.

If the government still wants to have control over people, let them combine Medicare/Medicaid and set up clinincs for those recipiants, and for the uninsured (although the uninsured would have to pay for services out of pocket or have easy payment plans). This could reduce costs by up to $1000/year for each insured person.

There you go, three simple things that can reduce costs, without government control or decreased standards of care.
Hypocrisy | 8:43 a.m. July 6, 2009
Why do Conservatives hate America so much?

America has been brought to its knees? Tremendous debt? Loss of jobs and homes? Best Health Care system?

Seriously, have you been drinking so much of Neoconservative media's Kool-Aid that you've turned against your fellow Americans and better judgement?

9/11 was on Bush's watch. He failed to protect America.
Massive debt was created under Bush's watch, he failed to manage money.
Two Wars that haven't been won yet, were started under Bush. Meanwhile, he ignored Russia, NK, and Iran. He failed to build bridges with allies while ignoring the biggest threats to our national security.
Our economy collapsed under Bush. He failed to help us keep our jobs and grow our economy.
The home industry crashed, under Bush. He failed to keep us in our homes.
He failed to address education. He refused to help our children.
Bush failed to address illegal immigration. He simply just passed it along to the next guy.
He never touched HealthCare Reform. It's proven that we don't have the best system.

And so much more! Why do Conservatives hate America so much? I don't understand!
Roland Kayser | 8:51 a.m. July 6, 2009
According the all opinion polls I've seen, all Western European nations are happier with their healthcare that we are with ours. No system is perfect, all involve trade-offs, but we can do better.
Anonymous | 8:58 a.m. July 6, 2009
There are plenty of examples of countries where the majority love their health care. You dont find out about them by living in a cave in Heber City and listening to glen beck cry about light bulbs. You all realize that all those evil 'socialist' countries who have single payer systems are democracies right? That if they didnt like the system they are using they could vote for change? Yet year after year they just allow it to go on. Are they just not as smart as those millionaires beck and rush? Or are fools in Heber getting taken by someone who doesnt have their best interest at heart? I think the latter. A single payer system would be the best course for all of us. It puts American business on equal footing with the rest of the world.
Anonymous | 9:38 a.m. July 6, 2009
Yes redshirt, tort reform will need to be (a very small) part of overall health care reform.
As for "reduce the amount of government mandated coverage, and allow insurance companies to allow people to pick their coverage.", I dont know where you work but I dont get to pick my coverage, my boss does. Sure, I could go get another job, but while I am looking I will be without coverage. What if I get sick then? Shall I sell my house?
Other countries | 9:42 a.m. July 6, 2009
The United States is ranked 37th or 38th in health care, so if you want examples of those happier with theirs... look up.

And that doesn't matter.

The important issue here is that AMERICANS are not happy with the current system.
RedShirt | 9:51 a.m. July 6, 2009
To "Hypocrisy | 8:43 a.m." here is your daily reminder, Bush was not, and is not a conservative. You may refer to him by any of the following:

Neoconservative
Progressive
Liberal-lite
RINO

Bush was not a conservative, if he was, we would not have the expansion of government like we had during his time in office. We would not have had the mortgage bailouts of 2008, or the TARP package of 2009. If Bush was conservative we would have had permanent tax cuts, no "stimulus" checked made using borrowed money.

The point is Bush was not a conservative.

Ultra Bob talks about "brothers of hate" as if he and the intolerant left were any thing but
RedShirt | 10:23 a.m. July 6, 2009
To "Other countries | 9:42 a.m." actually the US ranks 17th, not 37th. This is according to WMRC's Health of Nations survey.
Jud | 10:30 a.m. July 6, 2009
I don't feel like our country is on its knees at all. We are going through an economic adjustment which Obama is trying to cope with in the way the majority of Americans asked him to; otherwise he wouldn't be in office. Personally, I already feel better about America than I did a year ago.
who needs Limbaughism? | 11:00 a.m. July 6, 2009
I think the Right better start listening to fellow GOP leader, Colin Powell.
There is a very good reason why he supported Obama.
Grimble | 11:00 a.m. July 6, 2009
I'm writing from Amsterdam, where I'm attending a conference. The Netherlands has national health coverage, and nearly everyone is very happy with it. (There was a NY Times article on it not too long ago, in fact.) Furthermore, most Dutch find it inconceivable that in the U.S. healthcare is rationed based on wealth. And this concept far predates Karl Marx -- it's far more connected to Christian cooperativism.

It's sad to see how much conservatives' belief in their political ideals is dependent on their notion that everyone who isn't American is miserable.

Turns out we've blown it on healthcare. A lot of the world is better at delivering it than we are, and unsurprisingly, a lot of the world is also healthier than we are.

(Here in Amsterdam it's also got to have something to do with the fact that bicyclists from 8 to 80 years old, bicycles, and bike paths are EVERYWHERE here.)

lol | 11:15 a.m. July 6, 2009
Grimble quotes the New York Times to support Obamas health care - as if the Times had any credibility left
Grimble | 11:39 a.m. July 6, 2009
lol, did you actually read the article? Or do you have a bunch of friends in the Netherlands that are able to provide more accurate information?

You realize, don't you, that disputing my information by crying "liberal media," is the online equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and saying "La la la I can't hear you I can't hear you the Dutch are all fat and miserable and hate their national healthcare no matter what you say!"
to: ultra bob | 11:43 a.m. July 6, 2009
"brothers of hate"? man you got problems. why is it that every time sme one says they don't agree with obama some one who supports him calls them hateful? is it because there is just no other defense? as far as i'm concerned, if you voted for him because he is black, you are more racist than the KKK. and to who need libaughism, yeah, the reason is racism. 95% of african americans voted for obama in california alone. did they even look at his agenda? no, because if they had, they would see he does not support thier ideals. this ethnic group overwhelmingly supportd prop 8 to limit marriage as a man and a woman, something barack hussein obama is against. so yes, the 2008 elections were the most racist in history, but the racism was not directed at the black community, but the white.
tenx | 12:14 p.m. July 6, 2009
HE is making the dollar disappear. Surely that qualifies as a "magic man".

Grimble I was just mocking left wing complaints regarding "Faux" news
Take a look in the mirror: La la la la la la
Grimble | 1:16 p.m. July 6, 2009
lol,

Oh, I'm sorry, did Fox news also do a news story on how everyone in the Netherlands likes their national healthcare? I must have missed that one.

tenx,

I'm sorry, but you've got your facts wrong. In the year prior to Obama's election on Nov. 4, the average US$ to Euro was .67. Since he was elected it has averaged .75.
Lionheart | 1:39 p.m. July 6, 2009
@Grimble: Been to the Netherlands, it's a tiny country with a homogenous population and certainly does not have 20 million illegals wandering around the countryside. Solutions for the Netherland does not equate to solutions for the US. Frankly their standard of living didn't impress me.
Grimble | 2:09 p.m. July 6, 2009
"Their standard of living didn't impress me."

They seem quite delightfully happy with it. Huh.

And I'm still waiting for the Republican answer to the healthcare crisis. So far it's been "blame it on immigrants and do some cosmetic tort reform." Pretty weak answer to a pretty profound problem.
RedShirt | 2:10 p.m. July 6, 2009
To "Grimble | 1:16 p.m." well, if we are going to just take random measurements and base national policy and "winners" an "losers" based on that. how about this. When Bush left office, the national average for gas was at $1.70/gallon. In teh 6 months that Obama has been in charge of things, gas has gone to $2.70 (According to DOE sources).

Using that as a measurement of success, it sounds like Bush was good.
veedub | 2:20 p.m. July 6, 2009
Of course Barrack Obama isn't a magician--he's the Messiah of the left. His divine powers will save our nation.
Anonymous | 2:30 p.m. July 6, 2009
Red during the Bush years gas reached $4. Yours is a good example of gleaning data and ignoring facts.
Grimble | 2:55 p.m. July 6, 2009
RedShirt: I wasn't the one making random measurements, tenx was. I was simply pointing out even his cherry picking produced nothing but a pit.
change is good | 3:07 p.m. July 6, 2009
During the Bush years we went from a surplus to a deficit, entered into America's one and only preemptive war based on lies that bankrupted the country, saw wire-tapping of its citizens, and torture of POW's.

Thank God for President Obama!
RedShirt | 3:16 p.m. July 6, 2009
To "Anonymous | 2:30 p.m." thanks for helping to prove my point to "Grimble | 1:16 p.m." who also picked random factoids to use as a measurement of success.

However, Grimble is wrong, once again with his "facts". If you look at the graph of the Dollar to Euro exchange rate, since Nov 4, 2008, it is steadily going down. It actually resembles Obama's approval ratings.
RedShirt | 3:25 p.m. July 6, 2009
To "Anonymous | 2:30 p.m." was it the during the Bush years that it reached $4, or was it during the time that the Democrats controlled congress and were making the laws regarding oil drilling?
Obama a tyrant | 3:29 p.m. July 6, 2009
Obama is attempting to force an agenda on America which is contrary to what our founding fathers established. Obama has created the greatest expansion of government in US history and is attempting total government control of the economy, auto's, healthcare, energy etc.... If you read John Adams and other founders thoughts on BIG GOVERNMENT they see it as the opposite of capitalism and free democracy. All of our founders were fierce defenders of LIMITED GOVERNMENT which is clearly the opposite direction Obama wants to take us. So, the people of this country would do well to read and understand their foundering principles BEFORE the next election!!!
Astro | 3:30 p.m. July 6, 2009
@Lionheart. The Netherland's standard of living may not have impressed you, but on the Human Development Index they rank as the 6th best nation in the world to live in, while the US ranks # 15, even though the US GDP is higher than the Dutch.
@ Anonymous | 3:31 p.m. July 6, 2009
I do believe that was exactly Red's point.
@ to: ultra bob | 11:43 a.m. Jul | 3:42 p.m. July 6, 2009
Since we are talking about gleaning data, just picking on Obama's views on Prop 8 and saying that African American's must have been racist to vote for him because they don't agree on one issue is pretty lame.
RedShirt | 3:46 p.m. July 6, 2009
To "change is good | 3:07 p.m." other than changing Presidents, what has changed? The torture in Guantanimo still is going on. We are still at war (Bush did get a timetable set for withdrawl in Iraq before leaving office) Obama is about to send more troops into Afghanistan. He based the stimulus package on faulty data (a.k.a. lies) and has bankrupted the country by adding nearly $1.7 trillion dollars to the national debt, and has stated that the deficit spending will continue into the future, bankrupting the country further.

So, other than changing presidents, what has changed?
