I'd bet the guy with the 'I am not your atm' sign in the photo will be the first in line when his insurance tanks on coverage of his next malady.

I gotta love an ex-soldier protesting against creeping socialism. This guy has had great taxpayer-funded health care since the beginning of his career and will continue to have it until he dies. Why should I be paying for his health care when he doesn't pay a penny for mine?
StokeyBob | 7:05 p.m. July 4, 2009
Did you ever wonder where the money for things like the subversion of the world's immigration laws may come from? Also, recently I’m seeing an ad campaign, using money we don’t have, to sell us on a new health plan.

It seems to me as long as we allow people to print up fiat money there will be no place in the world where freedom can flourish.

If the Globalist oppose your efforts, paid for with real hard earned money, all they have to do is fire up the presses and shovel the money to any group that will oppose you.

Not only that but it seems they do it in such a way that the money to achieve THEIR goals is borrowed from them. Then we pay interest to a group outside of our country, like the Federal Reserve, on the creation and borrowing of OUR OWN money.

IN ESSENCE THEY BEAT US WITH OUR OWN STICK!

They would have to raise my taxes significantly to equal the astronomical amounts I'm now shelling out for private insurance. My snarky smarmy agent told me I should be happy since my premiums hadn't gone up as much as some other peoples and then he refused to switch my coverage to catastrophic. I had to call his boss to get the changes I want. It infuriates me that that smarmy oily tick makes money off me. They raise my coverage rates twice a year to cover the expenses of other people in my pool, and charge me extra every month for not using the 3rd party (apparently Barbados based) autopay system to make my payment. I loathe them. How exactly would government coverage differ from the bad treatment and paying the bills of others I do with my horrid for profit private insurance now? Not saying either is ideal. But private insurance in Utah has some truly bad apples in the business.

Liberals want health care because they are compassionate. But it is not compassionate towards our children and grandchildren who will have to pay for the bailouts, socialized healthcare, cap and trade, etc. Their future will be ruined by this crushing, unpayable debt.

Why do people not understand that we are not born with guaranteed nannies, just the freedom to try and create opportunity...unless social agendas like cap and trade shackle those future opportunities.
Cats | 7:53 p.m. July 4, 2009
Dear JB, liberals are the ultimate example of emotion passing for logic.

I hope the American people are beginning to wake up and realize what a terrible mistake we, as a nation, have made. I fear the Constitution truly is hanging by a thread.

Interesting how we don't like government involvement in our health care system, yet our beloved Mitt Romney as the former Massachusetts Governor had the inadvertent good sense to create the "universal" health-care program that the White House and Congress now want to inflict on the entire country. It is proving to be instructive, as Mr. Romney's foresight previews what President Obama, Max Baucus, Ted Kennedy and Pete Stark are cooking up for everyone else. This grand experiment Mr. Romney is so proud of is now bankrupting the state!

If you want constitutionally limited government, RON PAUL is the only true option. Romney supporters come to the reality that he supported the 1rst set of bailouts, wanted Washington to be a partner with Detroit before deciding that maybe he didn't, is for increasing Amercian forces policing the world etc..ad nauseam
Take the red pill!

How dare you question keeping the promise of health care to our service men and women. If you want the same promise then get your self down to the recruiting station and quit your griping!

re: Cats

That is so funny you said that. Right before coming on here, I noticed some liberal comments on another thread and thought how interesting that most liberals throw nasty insults with no substance instead of seriously debating the issues. They figure if they call conservatives embarrassing names, then people will be afraid of those labels and quickly move left.

Research, documentation, history, substance...these things tell a story because not everything is relative. There are a few absolutes out there and our founding fathers did the research to discover what those are for political balance and freedom.

Hey Kearney, I bet you don't know that fellow who is holding the 'atm' sign. So how is it that you know this person so well that you can tell us what this person will do in the event of something that you cannot forsee, but are willing to make up.

I would imagine that you yourself do not like it when people assume things about you, yet you yourself make a very grand assumption, thinking you can just embarrass people into shutting up so you can get your free stuff.

You really think that socialism will work? Please, tell me WHERE IT HAS EVER WORKED???

It has NEVER WORKED... ANYWHERE..

Every country that has tried it has failed and either fallen, or gotten their act together.

You seem to think that we will go quietly into the night, however you are very wrong. We will not be silenced by the likes of you, spending money that does not exist to solve problems that also do not exist.

Just because someone wants something, does not mean it is a problem for everyone else. It is THAT PERSONS PROBLEM, and no one else. That is freedom baby!

Some of the church taxes need to be evaluated. We're all paying for BYU students whose tuition is subsidized by all tithe payers. This isn't fair either. Every time we turn around there is a new fund. Perpetual education, humanitatian fund, missionary fund, etc. in addition to tithing. With al the billions in the bank, why are members asked to come up with increasingly more. Lots of the money goes toward shopping centers, apartment complexes, and other commercial enterprises. Its a difficult time and I think some of this is excessive.

300 people out of a state of over 2 million. This is impressive.

"You really think that socialism will work? Please, tell me WHERE IT HAS EVER WORKED???"

Where has capitalism worked without regulation? Remember the Long Depression of the 1890's and thirty years later there was the Great Depression? Before these there was the Trusts, robber barons, slavery, child labor, sweat shops, inflected meat, government troops shooting workers and Joe Hill.

You teabeggers. This single American has to pay more taxes to rise your kids and to support your marriages? Did you whine about the 3.2 billion the rest of us paid for Utah's 15 mins. of fame in 2002?

We Americans outside Utah; let welfare ranchers graze below market value. We let mining companies take our ore without paying royalties and we pay to fight wildfires. Utahans get $1.28 for each dollar you pay in federal taxes. Us Californians don't get back a dollar for a dollar.

Cry me a river.

Back to socialism. Did Fox New tell you than the Japanese auto industry's research and development was and is government founded? Did government work?
The Aggressively Stupid | 1:51 a.m. July 5, 2009
These protesters (and many of these posters) sound like the convention of the aggressively stupid. Their views are not rooted in reality or a basic understanding of the issues. I am guessing the vast majority were raised by republican parents, and are therefore republican without actually thinking for themselves. They will simply oppose everything President Obama does because he is a Democrat. Stop merely repeating what the conservative Christian extremist media tells you to believe. They are not telling you the truth. Think for yourselves!!

The truth is, Reagan, Bush, and Bush expanded government spending and created record deficits. Clinton balanced the budget. Obama's stated goal is to balance the budget before he leaves office. Those are the facts the Christian conservative extremist media does not talk about. Which is the fiscally responsible party of the past 30 years?

PS. Has another conservative christian extremist who preaches to Americans about morality cheated on his wife yet this weekend? Check the local parks, I'm sure you will find several.

Recent article | 4:06 a.m. July 5, 2009
A recent article quoted that only 49% of americans have any patriotism for the United States. I guess that means the other 51% are socialist and want the government to continually be their God Fathers and provide for them.

If so many want socialized health care then why are they willing to waste their money on an insurance premium that does not guarantee socialized health care?

We can blame the news media for lack of turnout because they too want socialism. The news media never once published any information about a 'Tea' party rebellion. And only limit their story to humiliate and call them dissenters. Remember people, it was those dissenters that died for our freedoms and wrote our constitution.

In writing our constitution they left out socialism and its programs for a reason, to allow all to earn their keep. Like Hitler, Obama is using the poor and the word free to further the cause of socialism.

The real problem with american people is they are not organized to fight for what they deserve, and they deserve better pay and wages so they can afford to pay for their own health care and food.

Which Liberal Secretary of the Treasury gave away Bailoout Billions to Banks that were run by his friends from his days as the CEO of Goldman Sachs?

Oh, that's right, it was the Republican George Bush and his Treasury Sec Paulson.

It is os funny that you Republicans can't seem to get your facts straight on the bailout.

It was a Republican socialist program to socialize the corporate losses while they privatize the profits.

That is why Repubs are so upset with Obama on the GM front. Bush was socializing the losses by preventing bankruptcy, then Obama stepped in and decided to keep the profits for those who saved the company, the public.

A couple of points on the tea parties. First, there were a number of them throughout Utah. Deseret News covered just one them. Second, I think this entire thread and even the Deseret News story lost track of the point of tea parties. I am angry that Repeblicans spent so much money and did so little. I am angry that Democrats have ballooned our deficit. I am angry that politicians are talking about a variety of programs and that we'll pay for them in "savings" from other programs. It's not about debate regarding health care. It's not about debate regarding bailouts for so many different industries. It's about the money being spent that I or my children will have to pay back. Enough! Stop the deficit spending. Stop taking more and more of my money in taxes because politicians think that is the only hammer they have.

I don't care if you are Republican or Democrat. Please stop spending so much and please ease up on my tax burden.

Loss OF FREEDOM | 8:51 a.m. July 5, 2009
What we get with big government -- high taxes and spending, is control by bureaucrats over every aspect of our daily lives, and a corresponding loss of freedom. Why is some bureaucrat in D.C. so much smarter than the rest of us? Why can't we be left to take care of our own needs and to vote with our own dollars on things like Health Care? Why do we need Big Brother to "take care" of us? It's disgusting. Sign me up for the next Tea Party. I don't need George Sorros and extreme left wing of this Obama Administration telling me how to do anything.! And thank you to all of you dedicated men and women of our armed forces who VOLUNTEER to put their lives on the line for our freedom. We should have started these tea parties 16 years ago when Clinton was in office. The public should have rallied together and started speaking out years ago. I am not only against Obama's actions at this time, I'm sick of both parties right now. Is there any honest politicians left in D.C. at all? We should have been out there protesting against Bush for 8 years. Yes he made many blunders under his watch. The only reason Obama is under fire is that everyone is just sick and tired of dishonest politics. It really doesn't mater what party they are in right now, they are all responsible for the mess we are in. However, many of the decisions that have been made in D.C. of the last 6 months are downright un-american. The group in charge now are going to be responsible for the biggest downturn in american history. I just hope if when we come out of it, we can somehow resemble the america I once knew.

We do not want more insurance bills; we want better health. The employment system caused our sicknesses; our technologies created our deaths and injuries by vehicles, and our greed has caused our high education costs, stress and separation from our families that causes emotional distresses. God told us not to fill the earth with cities or seek after riches.

Health care reform and pollution require us to turn to God's garden paradise lifestyle. Our families were to stay in the same area; that is what God did with the children of Israel when He gave each family a specific area of the promised land. It is our security, peace, joy and our ability to help each other build a prosperous abundant life where we had enough to care for travelers or the poor among us.

We are going the wrong way. We are not saved now from our oppressive lifestyle and we will not be saved in eternity if we reject a garden paradise lifestyle now.

John Kateel | 9:15 a.m. July 5, 2009
I am the guy who wrote a recent op-ed article in the Deseret News comparing Barack Obama's policies to those of Brigham Young. I wrote about how they were similar and good. Cap and trade is free market oriented. When an efficient company sells "credits" it creates a financial incentive to be energy efficient. Environmentalism is really about efficiency and maximizing use of limited resources. Cap and trade monetizes and ultimately securitizes effluents and allows investors to profit from credits traded on an exchange. Meanwhile, lack of stable pricing for healthcare is a barrier to entry for entrepreneurs looking to start a business and purchase healthcare on the open market. If everyone had universal healthcare, the risk pool would be broader and rates should plunge. Hence more people would have more incentives to create jobs because lack of health care would be eliminated as a barrier. Barack Obama is the most free market oriented, pro capitalist, entrepreneur-centric, political realist we had in a long time. Further, his overtures to the 1.3 billion plus Muslim world should open these societies up more to American products and services. We all win!

Do you know any poor doctors?

Why not?

Because there has been a price put on a healthy life, with costs driven to extremes, mainly by greedy insurance agencies who can pretty much do as they please, and will fight you tooth and nail for any claim...even a legitimate one.

Break the circle of greed between doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and insurance agents.

The current administration is indeed moving us rapidly towards a socialism that has never been nor will it ever be acceptable if our country is to remain the one that was formed, through the inspiration of God, back in 1776. To those that have taken up the "Tea Party" movement, we express our gratitude and our comittment to do our part.

Comparing Cold War era Czechoslovakia, both in terms of system and in terms of medical service delivery, to the U.S. or even Europe of today is preposterous. Even in the U.S. today, though, you can get poor care, depending on the health care providers, or even worse, the lack thereof because you cannot afford either the care of the insurance. The U.S. spends far more than the rest of the world and yet our overall health is around 37th or so in the world, comparable to some pretty questionable countries. We have an enormously inefficient system, yet the right wingers, most of whom I'm sure have insurance coverage through their work, want to leave things the same. They like anonymous corporate clerks making health care decisions for them while having nearly 50 million of their fellow American go without. No system is perfect, to be sure, but ours is not working too well and we can do better. Cries of Socialism are due to lack of understanding of the Administration's proposals and the principles of socialism (and which brand or version thereof they know not).
Taxes | 11:32 a.m. July 5, 2009
I personally lived in country for a few years, where socialism ruled. I know a man who recieved a pay raise at his place of employment. His taxes were so high that he literally had to work less hours so he could take home more money after he paid taxes on his hourly pay increase. How productive is this? Socailism does not work no matter how it is presented.
CJ3 | 11:36 a.m. July 5, 2009
Those crying "socialism" concerning health care should take a look around the rest of the free world. Their arguments are unfounded. They are merely attempting to distract us from the real issue.

The richest country in the world can't take care of it's own population? That should say something to you.

And it has absolutely nothing to do with freedom, and everything to do with capatilism, otherwise known as "the aquisition of wealth."

That is the most insane idea that the government ever came up with. Setting CO2 emissions at a set level and if a company wants to exceed the pollution they pay for it. Let’s say CO2 levels are set at x amount and then there are z companies or individuals that pay to exceed X. Now the C02 emissions total X plus the sum of all Z!

This shows the true face of the green movement. Grease their palms and they will look the other way. In the mean time, the companies pass the extortion on to the consumers with increased fuel and energy costs. How dare you compare BY’s polices to something so insidious as this.

@ “SOCIALISM HAS NEVER WORKED” Remarkable that someone able to read remains this ignorant!

According to OECD [2009], happiness levels are highest in Northern European SOCIALIST countries.

1st Denmark
2nd Finland
3rd Netherlands
4 ?
5 ?
6th Canada [non-European]
7th Switzerland [non-European]
8th New Zealand
9th Norway
10th Belgium

The U.S. did not make the top 10!

Denmark is not only a wealthy country, it's highly productive, with a
2009 GDP per capita of $68,000, according to IMF.

The US' GDP per capita, is only $47,335.

Scandinavian countries have higher GDP per capita, the average workweek in that part of the world is 37 hours.

In China, 47 hours, GDP per capita is $3,600.

Low unemployment contributes to citizen happiness.

Denmark's unemployment is 2%,
Norway's is 2.6%.
Netherlands: 4.5%.
U.S.: 9.8%.

Economists concur that a 4% unemployment rate reflects a stable economy.

So, SOCIALISM IS ALIVE AND WORKING WELL IN THE ABOVE COUNTRIES, INCLUDING THE UK, SO WHY THE NEED TO FABRICATE AND PUBLISH UNTRUTHS?

Obama rocks!

To "jfs", you kind of answer your own question when you ask "If universal health care is so great, why is congress and the president electing not to be covered by it?"

The bottom line, Lobbists from the Insurance companies have greased their palms so much that the Republicans who are against a public insurance plan are fighting to keep you from getting the same coverage they get.

Please answer the President's question. We continually hear that private companies can do better than the government, given this, why are insurance companies afraid that they will not be able to compete with a government run plan?

Is it that they will not be able to pay their CEO $1.6 Billion like United Healthcare does?

Santholzer complains about a botched treatment from a physician in a country with social medical care. One of the reasons U.S. of A. doctors charge so much is to cover the high cost of malpractice insurance. Why is it so high? Cause the free enterprise system doctors goof all the time too. 100% of Canadians have access to free medical treatment. My kidney surgery last year cost me nothing. In U.S. of A. 10's of millions have no insurance and no hope of being able to afford it. High priced doctors making their millions make sure of that. Your present system is broken. Fix it and cut out the untold suffering of too many of your citizens.

I wonder why almost all liberals think that every conservative approved of everything that President Bush did. I was disgusted when he passed the first bailout with threats and dire predictions. I did not approve of his growing the government. He was not following a conservative program when he did those things.

History shows that socialism does not work. Fiscal oversight fell apart, especially in the last ten years and it was the fault of both parties. Capitalism does not mean freedom from reasonable regulations. The corruption of our system is leading us away from Constitutional principles and there is plenty of guilt to go around and much of it stems from greed.
To CJ3 | 1:43 p.m. July 5, 2009
Should we all start paying for free medical school too? Do you really have such an issue for paying people to keep you healthy and saving your children's lives without even a second though?
Do you really have such an issue with paying for good medications that also save you and your children's lives - research costs $$$ by the way.

However, I agree with you on the outrageous cost of insurance. I would be all for a cap in medical malpractice suit payouts. It would really help keep insurance premiums down.
