RSL looked better with 10 men on the field than it did with 11. Of course, that was partly due to San Jose playing extremely conservatively in hopes of protecting their lead. Regardless, the end of the game was very exciting.
Summary | 12:18 a.m. July 4, 2009
Low energy! Stupid red card by Espindola. Wake up team and stop getting stupid red cards. Williams worked his tail off and Jason subs him at 60 minutes and instantly we are down 1-0. dumb sub. If anyone should have come off it was Morales. He looked asleep until the 70th minute and never chased the ball the first half. The right side was open the entire first half the back line played it up the left every time with NO change of field. Wake up team! In the end we tie because they score for us. What a joke!
Last 20 minutes | 12:42 a.m. July 4, 2009
The only reason we looked better the last 20 minutes is because S.J stoped playing offense and sat back letting us attack. What a joke 1-1 both scored by S.J.

whatever...MLS soccer is lame. Checketts needs to check out of the business. he ruins every team he owns or operates. fortunately he has a good coach of real. but he ruined the Knicks, Madison Square Garden, the Blues and who could be next?

I was at the game last night. Two observations:

1 - What a pathetic display of time wasting by San Jose. The 70th to 80th minue was them just faking injured and wasting time. Joe Cannon as well was terrible. I get that its part of the game, but this was excessive. I remember at one point the ball went out of bounds, and two guys for San Jose on totally opposite parts of the field went down "writhing in pain". It was really obsessive and completely obnoxious. Win the game like men. If you can't, you shouldn't be playing.

2 - Fabian Espindola was terrible all night. Wrong decision after wrong decision. 1 on 1 with the goalie and kicks it right into the keepers chest. Careless giveaways, blasts a 10 footer over the crossbar, and then just to top it off: the red card, giving San Jose ANOTHER excuse to lay around for 5 minutes.

We were lucky for the draw. I'm glad we got it. That was a frustrating game start to finish, so I was glad we got something for it in the end. Go RSL
Espindola's tie | 8:58 a.m. July 4, 2009
This one belongs to Espindola. That red card may have been frustration. There were several opportunities laid at his feet, especially in the first half. All the sudden Fabi can't beat a defender and get a cross off! The red card just seemed to be icing on the cake. running on to corner kicks, free kicks, and crosses really hampered RSL. The ball was being played in to the right space, but all that found was a waiting San Jose centerback. NO movement up front at all.

I'm tired of spending money to watch ugly soccer!!! RSL improve or put me out of my missery and leave. I support you every week but what a waste, yet I still go.

Yesterdays news coverage "RSL not overconfident for game vs. quakes."

.........

It should have been 3-0 rsl.

The fireworks show was amazing credit to rsl and whoever their contracted with for those awesome fireworks

Hey Wasted,
If you are tired of watching ugly soccer, don't go. You must be an idiot if you are spending money on something you do not enjoy.
I love having the team here through the good and the bad, and do not consider it a waste.

rsl | 10:05 a.m. July 4, 2009
makes the beautiful game ugly sometimes
Borchers | 10:11 a.m. July 4, 2009
Borchers was terrible on defense last night. He had about 5 really awkward challenges, most of which he was beat on. His wild stab at the ball (really horrible) allowed San Jose to walk in for a goal. Russell also looked shaky at times. Kreis wins a game 3-0 and thinks he doesn't need Olave anymore. Well, so much for that theory.

5 wins and 5 ties?!?!?!?!

When will this silly sport realize that sports is about winning, not ties?

If you can't win RSL, you lose.

re: Rob | 10:42 a.m. July 4, 2009
It was Les Olson Company. They do it every year and do a great job....
hans | 11:32 a.m. July 4, 2009
Fabian Espindola has been terrible in every game he has played in. He is constantly complaining about the other players on the team. His arms are always up in disgust with the officials and his own players. He has had so many errors on his part that he seems to think that they were some how caused by someone else. He just needs to step up and and improve his own skills and change his attitude about the other players on the team.
Fan | 11:36 a.m. July 4, 2009
What a bunch of whiners. If you don't like MLS and you think RSL plays ugly, then stay home. You won't be missed.
thre11stu | 11:45 a.m. July 4, 2009
@ 10:11
The reason Olave sat was because Kreis is trying to teach discipline. He was not happy with his red against Houston and so he was punished for it. I give him credit for doing that, and hopefully he will learn.
Everybody saying that Espindola has been terrible all year.. Do you guys even follow the team, or do you just look and see how many goals he has scored and base your opinion on that? He created a lot of chances last night, both for himself and for other players. We just need better finishing. He had a horrible lapse in judgement, but I have been impressed with his play.
Ties!!!! | 11:58 a.m. July 4, 2009
Keep 'em coming boyzz!!! I want a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one and a green one and an orange one and a black one!!!!!!!!! Soccer is so cute because nobody ever gets their feelings hurt!!!! Ties for everybody!!!
Har Har | 12:13 p.m. July 4, 2009
Yet another soccer draw, how exciting.
Re:Fan | 12:25 p.m. July 4, 2009
Nope, you won't. There will be no one left at the RioT into to miss you at all.

PS Ties are the single largest reason Americans hate soccer. Stalling would cease if someone had to win before everyone left.
OhYea | 1:09 p.m. July 4, 2009
Is RSL trying to turn into a bunch of thugs? Red after Red after Red after Red. Stupid is as Stupid does, and RSL is playing stupid. Kreis has little or no control. Mathis runs his mouth all game lone when he should be playing the game. Makes one assume he runs things in the locker room also. Kreis said he wanted to win? How in the heck do you do that down 1-0 and then you put in a 4th defensive back? RSL doesn't play to win, they play not to lose. And what's with Olave playing like he is a pro wrestler? There is no reason to play cheap ball. And there is no reason to get goated into stupid selfish decisions but I bet we will see a sea of red the rest of the year. I can't come to many games, but I can get better entertainment watching state comp ball, boys or girls, that watching RSL players 90 minutes do everything that should never be done in a soccer match.
todd from santa ana | 1:46 p.m. July 4, 2009
Espindola is one of the few that did anything or try offensively. He got little support, you could try blaming his teammates.

This team is like the Galaxy when you think they figure it out, they go down. I cannot believe all the shots, possession, how little they did and takes own goal to just get one point.

A DEVASTATING DRAW AND LOST POINTS NONETHELESS. THIS HAD TO BE 3POINTS VS MEDIOCRE TEAM BAD ON ROAD

Because still 1 point out of the playoffs

MORE IMPORTANTLY 2 GAMES MORE PLAYED (16) OVER THE #7 AND #8 SEEDS

RSL Fan | 1:54 p.m. July 4, 2009
Bench Espindola until he can learn discipline. That was a stupid mistake. I'm sick of RSL settling for ties after a selfish player gets a red. They must not be thinking of the rest of their team.

If the boys can't decide it on the field I suggest the soccer moms decide it with an orange wedge eating contest after each tie game.
Re: 12:25 p.m. | 2:14 p.m. July 4, 2009
I think you've got it right.

If there are no ties the entire strategy of the game becomes more aggressively focused on scoring.

No more playing for the tie.
re:anon 2:03 | 2:46 p.m. July 4, 2009
NFL= ONE tie in twenty five years.
MLS= 60% of all games this year end in ties.

Conclusion= still apples and oranges. The popularity of one has nothing to do with the lack therof for the other.

If you must find excuses for the asinine concept of a COMPTETITION that is willing to accept ties as the norm, please find one that is not trying to compare MLS to the NFL. World wide, you MIGHT make a case; but for MLS, you just look foolish.

Fix the problem with soccer and you will get the respect you deserve. Otherwise, wallow in mediocre results. Your choice.

A win is a win and in case like this, tie is win. I feel sad for all the sad people who come on only to make waves, complain. You ruin the spirit of beautiful SL Valley, BUT YOU NEVER SLOW THE SPIRIT OF THIS FEDOR OR THIS TEAM!!!! I am glad that we are the aggressive team, so we get the red card, that is how it goes. I rather push first than be pushed. Espindola still the man no matter the card, yellow...red, it doesn't matter. As I waved my flag of USA high in the sky last night I was overcome with pride of great country, great state and amazing team. Not to mention beautiful setting of the mighty Rio Tinto!!! We are on our way to continued success, you know I will be there thru the thick or the thin with my kettle drum, shinguards, referee whistle, autographed Landon Donovan book, personalized RSL jersey, flares and sparklers. This is and always will be our year!!!! Goooooooooo GOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOO RSL, GOOOOOOOOOOOO all the way!!!!! I look forward to friendly game with Club America and another victory for RSL. It's our year!!!

It is getting easier each week to final say I DON'T NEED TO GO TO THE GAME TODAY!!! Say what you want. I am a true fan that is fed up with the team!!! Promises Promises and always the same outcome. It is time to kick some RSL player and coaches back ends!!!
todd from santa ana | 3:15 p.m. July 4, 2009
what about the old rule of NASL 6 points for a win, 1 point for each goal scored up to 3?

That was a good rule. It promoted 90 minutes of Cosmos like attacking soccer. You saw more 3-1,3-2,4-2 games.

Ties would be worth 3 with nothing added for goals scored.

This promotes attacking football
todd from santa ana | 10:51 p.m. July 4, 2009
fedor: I will never ask you to change, your passion is fantastic. I defended the kid with the red card.

This is not to be critical to "real" fans, but these red cards and discipline is becoming enough of an issue that it could have cost 4 of possible 6 crucial points in 2 of last 4 games.

This stuff starts and comes down to Kreis. Fedor, I still question if Jason is for this team. You cannot drop points like last night and not pay the price.

I will root For REAL. You guys did well tonight playing for USA vs Grenada.

However, i do not fault players efforts, they should have jumped on San Jose last night and did not.

Fedor, I will email you after the Everton game. You do not see EPL teams often in the STates. I hope you can meet some of them maybe get some autographs and give a report if those guys are cool and warm and have good attitudes. I hope Arteta is healthy by then. He, Cahill, Lescott, Neville and Howard.

Have a great time. I love Everton the way the play and Moyes a great manager...
Which sport is popular | 3:38 p.m. July 5, 2009
NFL fans = maybe 100 million

Soccer fans = probably about 4 billion

Yes, I certainly hope soccer "becomes popular" one of these days.

We don't need to "Americanize" soccer to make it better. Just because soccer isn't the most popular USA sport doesn't mean it needs fixed. Let's not change soccer because pro wrestling and NASCAR fans suggest it.
PLEASE | 11:30 a.m. July 6, 2009
RE:Which sport is popular | 3:38 p.m. July 5, 2009

Oh.... here we go again. The rest of the world likes it so it must be popular. Get a clue. 4 Billion fans like soccer and about 2,500 are US Citizens. Where do you live???

I can't wait for all my friends to come over for the world cup soccer final. We are throwing a huge party with plenty of food and drinks. You would never see that during .... say maybe the SuperBowl.

Nahhhhh the NFL is second tier to soccer. You are right and the rest of the USA sports fans are just clueless.

Let me help you out here. Stop going to the park for your LARP events, stop playing D&D, stop standing in line for StarWars for 2 days and finally stop telling everyone how popular Soccer is in other third world countries, and countries in Europe we keep bailing out in wars.

Re: Please | 12:46 p.m. July 6, 2009
You might want to educate yourself before you talk about how soccer "isnt popular" in the states. Why do you waste your time commenting on a soccer story if all you have to say is how much better pointy ball is to america? yeah we are bailing out europe in wars, hows that economy of ours though? Please.
Oh, and you want to talk about parties for the super bowl... go see what pretty much every country does during the world cup (yes even this one). Pubs, bars, whole cities, etc etc. Filled with people watching the beautiful sport that is soccer. I am fine with the fact that you dont like true football (yes thats soccer for you) but at least be a bit more educated when you argue it. 2500? Ha ha ha, try the high millions...
RSL Ulty fan | 2:29 p.m. July 6, 2009
Some of you claim that if we got rid of ties that would fix soccer. Your wrong. Look at Hockey. They went away from ties and IT DID NOTHING FOR THE SPORT. Baseball has way less action than soccer, but I don't bash baseball. Post all you want soccer haters because it helps out the team whether you like it or not. It gives them more exposure because demand appears to go up with increased comments. Go RSL, lets find some consistency. That game should have been a blow out for RSL, but oh well.
Huh? | 11:13 a.m. July 7, 2009
RE:Re: Please | 12:46 p.m. July 6, 2009

Wait.... the world cup is on TV? Besides Telemundo, what channel. 3.37 something like that?

The only people who care about the recreation (not a sport) known as soccer are the parents of nonathletic kids can't play real sports.

The go around telling everyone how soccer is popular in other countries and how it will catch on in the USA. Well 30 years later... it is NOT catching on.

Look at the declining RSL attendance if you need any evidence.

ESPN | 12:54 p.m. July 7, 2009
If you haven't heard by now: ESPN will broadcast the world cup on all of their channels and show every game. I assume you know what ESPN is.

If you don't understand a tie, I truely feel for you. Wait, something is different! lol

Look at it this way, a NFL game is just that. A single game. A soccer game is part of a competition where the points are counted at the end of the season. 3 points for a win, and 1 for a tie and 0 for a loss. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the chamption of the competition. Very simple. It really is basic math. Basic. Don't you get it yet? It really is as simple as having 2 options for points. It also means that soccer games are 2 hours. That is it. No extra time, no 5 overtimes because both teams are equal. Have you ever thought that teams could be equal? Wow, what a concept.

Here is another concept for you: Things that originate in other countries may have supporters in this country. For real. We live in a World!
Hey ESPN GUY | 3:28 p.m. July 9, 2009
RE: ESPN | 12:54 p.m. July 7, 2009

No, you are right, I don't get math. You were the nerd in HS who used to get beat up after Math class because you answered all the questions and made the teacher look bad.

Let me guess, you are now an accountant, make OK money. Work for a boss or CEO who did play real sports, who hates soccer and deep down inside you hate him, but you have to live with it. You get upset when others tell you how bad soccer is, and defend it to the death like a religion.

You live in central part of the valley maybe Murray or Taylorsville. You drive a 93 Carovan, your kids could not play real sports, so you pushed them into soccer. They love it because you do not have to even be coordinated to run around and kick a ball. You are a scoutmaster and a youth soccer coach. You miss the days of D&D and WW is just not cutting it for you. You come on here to lash out on soccer haters, because you are a loser.
