I care. Thanks for the article.
Dear Negative Anonymous | 1:20 a.m. July 4, 2009
You must drink Lemonade every morning and following with a chaser of bitter root, then eat a lunch of dill pickles and for you dinner at night you probably suck on 10-12 lemons and follow that with a drink of pure lime concentrate.

I don't think I have ever seen any positive come from your keyboard. If you don't like Dick Harmon, why do you keep reading him and making your nasty, sarcastic, acerbic, mean-spirited, negative comments?

I sincerely hope you are not married, because your spouse has to be truly unhappy, living with such a negatie human being.

No one could | 6:47 a.m. July 4, 2009
No one should make it as far off one play as Beck as. If he doesn't complete "Beck to Harline" to beat Utah a few years ago, he doesn't get drafted in the 2nd round, and fans really wouldn't care. He would be another forgotton Feterick. Instead, we still get a weekly article about him. It's amazing what one huge play can do for an athlete.

Thanks for having some class. I care too. It's not everyday you actually hear good news. Especially when it comes to professional football.

@Anonymous:
If you didn't care, why would you even post a comment. You care about being a naysayer and about disrespecting what people have put effort into. Harmon tried to get a story out there and you put him, the Deseret News, and the rest of us who enjoyed that article down.

Go read the Daily Herald or the Salt Lake Trib.

this was probably the biggest bunch of nothing I've ever read. Dick seems to do this a lot
re: Anonymous | 8:57 a.m. July 4, 2009
You're right. Let's not celebrate a hard-working guy who started a charitable foundation. Good call, man.
You must be a Utah fan, right? So, if you don't care, why did you read the article? If nobody cares, why are there multiple comments on the article?
The reason you don't care, is you hate the thought of Beck to Harline. Let me replay it for you:

"John Beck throws the ball......Harline wide open in the END ZONE...FINDS HIS GUY! FINDS HIS GUY! TOUCHDOWN BYU!"

!!!!
I'm always interested | 9:59 a.m. July 4, 2009
in articles that are uplifting and reflect well on people of character and service.

I also think Dick Harmon does a great job as a reporter.

Further, I'm one who grew up hearing "if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all." Great advice for all who post on sports articles.

BTW, Steve Young's golf tournament in Arizona is to benefit troubled youth, not just Indians. The Anasazi Foundation and the Forever Young Foundation work together to accomplish much good. The annual charity golf tournament is a big hit.
Dick's Role | 10:05 a.m. July 4, 2009
Dick Harmon has a unique niche in that he provides us BYU fans with our regular dose of BYU sports year round. And he often does it by taking a personal slant like this one. Us die-hard fans love it. Dick knows we do and I'm sure he could care less about the few like anonymous who make the comments they do - after taking the time to read yet another Dick Harmon article in which they know exactly what the content and slant will be. As a secondary fan of the U I also enjoy articles about their players but don't see them nearly as often in the Trib as the D News gives us with the Cougs. Thanks for what you do Dick!! Keep up the personal interest stories. I would love a where-are-they-now article. What are our favorite past BYU stars up to now? Guys we don't hear about like Jason Buck, Leon White, Timo Sarilinian, Virgil Carter, Fred Roberts..... the list could go on and on. If anyone can do that kind of an article it's you Dick!
JPG | 11:12 a.m. July 4, 2009
re Dick's Role: I really liked your comments and especially the suggestion to profile past BYU stars. I'd especially like an update on Fred Roberts. I recently learned a couple of things about Fred's life after basketball from a friend that leads me to believe there's a really good story there.

D News - how about it what can you tell us about what's been going on with Fred?
Artie | 11:14 a.m. July 4, 2009
Just as long as he doesn't write any golf articles.
Not so bad | 11:34 a.m. July 4, 2009
I am a Utah fan. I don't hate Beck, and even though Harmon inflates him a great deal, he seems like a pretty good guy from the likes of this article. I don't always read Dick's articles, but I do like these ones when they delve into a player's character. I wish our Ute writers would do something like this!
dean | 12:20 p.m. July 4, 2009
Anonymous is a Ute fan. sad sad.
Howard S. | 12:25 p.m. July 4, 2009
Dick idolizes an ex-BYU football player.....

Who could have seen that coming?
Dick's Role II | 1:28 p.m. July 4, 2009
Dick Harmon is doing exactly what the Deseret News and its readers want him to do. If you don't like what Dick writes, read something else. The Des News is the paper for BYU fans, and that's what we want to read. Thanks for yet another great article, Dick. We appreciate it.

To the people with all the negative slants, just keep in mind: Reading the paper is similar to watching TV (although it requires more effort). And every TV remote has at least two buttons. One turns the TV off; the other one changes the station. If you don't like what you're watching, you use one of them.

If you don't like what Dick writes, stop reading, but don't begrudge us what we want to read in our own paper.

another pointless article
BYU | 2:25 p.m. July 4, 2009
Can you blame the few Ute fans who can let go of that play in 2006? Beck to Harline ripped their collective heart out of their beating chest.

Let it go, Ute fans. You had a couple of desperation type wins last year too. Focus on those and shut up about our successes.

Both fan bases look forward to 2009 and a fresh start. Each school will either reload or rebuild. Let's be patient with reality.

Go BYU!! Here's to another 10+ win season.

Dear Anonymous, I think you should remain anonymous and not show your ignorance by writing in blogs. It must be painful to be so inane as to criticize an excellent writer on a great human interest story. Please look up the definition of inane since I doubt that you know it. You should be red from embarrassment but I am sure it is from you school's colors.
Re: 2:25 p.m. | 3:52 p.m. July 4, 2009
As a Ute fan I can say that a score of 48 to 24, including 6 turnovers by an unprepared Max Hall, plus a record of 5-2 in the last 7 games (and counting) makes the miracle of Beck to Harline a lot more palatable.
Ernest T. Bass | 7:20 p.m. July 4, 2009
Dick is to byu sports as FARMS is to spin the truth into something positive by grasping at straws.
Doon | 7:39 p.m. July 4, 2009
To all you stupid Ute fans who say you don't care... thanks for reading the article and taking the time to comment, a sure sign of someone who does not care.

Dick, thanks for the story.... MOST people do care
Re: Doon | 7:39 p.m.  | 8:41 p.m. July 4, 2009
Mr. Doon,

In our house we don't use the word "stupid".

We feel that intelligent people are able to express their thoughts with more appropriate language.

Perhaps a more appropriate description of the Utes commenting on this topic would be "inconsiderate", or even thoughtless".

Might I add that I appreciate Mr. Harmon for highlighting the efforts of a remarkable young man to whom we may all look as an example of the character and integrity that is built while representing BYU through athletic competition.

Thank you,

Helen
Helen,.. | 10:56 p.m. July 4, 2009
Yes, they are that stupid.
Re: 10:56 | 11:12 p.m. July 4, 2009
Must we stoop to their level with our language?

Can we not let our expressions reflect the honor and dignity that BYU represents?

Thank you,

Helen
Re: No ONe Could | 4:26 p.m. July 5, 2009
Thanks for being the typical myopic ute fan who only hates byu and doesn't know anything about football. You must have missed the rest of the 06 season where Beck crushed every defense in front of him. Thanks.
Re: Re: 10:56 | 11:12 p.m.  | 6:43 p.m. July 5, 2009
Whose level are you referring to, Helen? Your BYU fans are capable of incredibly vile comments and guess what...BYU fans come up with it all by themselves! So, no, your BYU friends do not let their "expressions reflect the honor and dignity that BYU represents." Perhaps you expect too much.

Thanks for lecturing them, though. You are all so special.

Dick | 7:26 p.m. July 5, 2009
Don't ever give up your passionate view of BYU and it's sports figures, it's your unique legacy to have written so much about it for a generation of it's fans.

It takes a man to not click on an article written by someone you don't like, not read it, and not post something ridiculous about it. Clearly, there are few men who posted near the beginning of all the comments. Seriously, grow up people.

Beck is doing awesome things with his life. He still has the most memorable moment all-time in the BYU/Utah rivalry.
Ed Clinch | 5:11 p.m. July 6, 2009
Nice article, I hope he does well on the field.
In order to have time off | 6:10 p.m. July 6, 2009
Don't you need to have some time on the clock?
Re: RR | 2:38 p.m. | 7:59 p.m. July 6, 2009
RR says: "Beck.... still has the most memorable moment all-time in the BYU/Utah rivalry."

Funny, I always thought the most memorable moment in the all-time Utah/BYU rivalry was in 1993 when on 4th and 10 with seconds left in the game, Chris Yergeson (after having missed two field goal attempts of 35 and 37 yards) split the uprights with a 55 yard field goal to defeat the Cougars 34-31.

Since that November afternoon in 1993 Utah has a 10-6 (63%) winning margin over BYU.

Best of luck to you John, a great player and person. We'll keep reading about you.
Re: 11:12 p.m. | 9:51 a.m. July 8, 2009
Actually I learned everything negative I've ever learned from Ute fans.

Actually, I've been around a loooong time and everything I know about arrogance I learned from Cougar fans.
