The past decade was not friendly to him and it had a toll on his health. Many entertainers have problems of dealing with windfall wealth and the public interference in their lives. I think MJ was another victim that had a hard time trying to deal with it all. It only takes one incident or accusation to put people over the edge and their health declines. Hence the drugs and medications to deal with his health issues.
At 50 years old it seems a little extreme to try a comeback with the same energy and performances as a younger person. I think his desire to make an energetic comeback was more than his frailty would allow.
