Why | 3:03 p.m. July 3, 2009
Hew Yewties - No one has ATTEMPTED to answer my question (see 9:27 am post). If you have such a recruiting advantage - which we all agree you do, why during the past 35 years has there been only one stretch - the Crowton years when BYU was the worst they have been since the 60's - that Utah has dominated BYU??? Look at any 10-year period and at best your break even with BYU.

Why????????????????

This post is right on.

"Please stop defending Bronco's excuses and join me in demanding results on the field, not in attendance or recruiting. Let's see, most of these kids have have one year of HS, then a redshirt year, then a two year mission, then four years to play. Add it all up, most of these kids will be college seniors in 8 years. Some are younger and will be seniors in 9 years."

Stop and think for a minute, if these new kids really are as good as we have been led to believe, they won't be at BYU long enough to reach their senior year...they'll go to the NFL as juniors or sophomores.
Re: Please | 2:02 p.m.  | 4:24 p.m. July 3, 2009
I like Bronco's excuses...very entertaining.
Sounds about right | 5:01 p.m. July 3, 2009
TDS gets a DB who is 5'10" with offfers from that football powerhouse UConn and some 1-AA schools. Sounds like TDS talent to me!!

Meanwhile DB Joseph Smith chooses Utah. How bad is it getting in Provo?!
Dan L | 5:05 p.m. July 3, 2009
Fetch, Yewt fans. Like your DBs are any better. Like their are any Yewtah DBs in the NFL. Besides, we own you. Your are little bruther! Go Cougs!!

Re: please | 7:43 p.m. July 3, 2009
The U is where we want to be? Are you serious? Give me break, Utah hasn't shown in any way, shape, or form that they're going to be a great program. They should have had a top 10 recruiting class after last season and it didn't happen. Our down year was a 10 win season. Prior to 2008 most Ute fans would have given their left arm for a 10 win season. BYU hasn't even scratched the surface of what it's about to do in the future. Here's the deal, BYU wins almost every game their are SUPPOSED to win. Utah has embarrased themselves by bad losses to inferior teams like UNLV and Air Force. BYU has lost games to teams as good or better. So at least BYU has built a base and have done what they are supposed to do: Win at home, destroy weaker competition, and start to beat non conference opponents on the road. BYU needs to take the next step and win against nationally ranked teams, and that comes with better recruiting, which BYU has already done. Ever since Mendenhall took over, each class has been better each year.
Re: Inferiority complex | 11:50  | 8:20 p.m. July 3, 2009
The support you offer for your arguments is not very compelling. I will suggest, however, that you are the one with a low self esteem. Come back to these boards when you have facts that are on topic.
Re: JHuck | 1:54 p.m.  | 8:28 p.m. July 3, 2009
Schedule some real OOC competition and then come on these boards and talk about a 10 win season. Wait, you have real OOC competition this year...ok, you can talk about it at the end of this season because Bronco will guide BYU to yet another 10 win season.

NOT!!!

Has the SLC Tribune cancelled their Utah Utes Sports section?Sure would be nice if they would write a few articles for their Fan Base. Also it will be nice when Middle School begins again in the fall so we won't have to clutter up the BYU Blog page with all the kid shatter.
re:1:22pm post | 12:55 a.m. July 4, 2009
I'm quite proud of that play and I'm proud of Beck to Harline. I still get excited about Doman running the option to Staley. What about beating Miami or the Cotton Bowl team. But the common theme here is that they are all in the past and are nothing to brag about now. Especially after the U just went undefeated and won a BCS bowl for the 2nd time in like 5 years. Just like a recruiting class that won't do anything for 5+ years is nothing to brag about yet. Remember how excited everyone was about a certain #1qb prospect named Ben Olson, so lets have some quiet optimism here. Admit it, you are probably wearing your quest for perfection t-shirt right now, right?
schedules | 2:31 a.m. July 4, 2009
it's kinda' funny when the U and the Y knock each other's schedules, especially when they are largely the same. We even each played the same OOC team (USU) last year. Sheesh!

5 victories out of the last 7. Way to skew a stat to make it seem like you have any sort of dominance. go back to 1998 and take the next ten victories(10 years) It's BYU 5 Utah 5. It's a draw people. This teams are very equal. Utah fans get over yourself. 8-5 Pittsburg? an 0-14 alabama team?? (see quotes can be misleading) BYU fans get over yourself. You have one national title congratulations. You beat a 6-5 michigan team. Just barely. This wasn't even your best team ever. Both are good teams. Both are good rivals. Both fans hate each other. which make me laugh. Cause they are all the same people, just grew up rooting the other team. They still (in most cases) all root for the jazz.
Re: re:re:ty.ler  | 2:08 a.m. July 5, 2009
Ummmmmmm, there are THREE Krugers. Those fans who understand recruiting know the 2010 class are the soon to be seniors in high school. You must make your parents proud!
Chem74 | 2:13 p.m. July 5, 2009
Nice post by PLEASE, but you've got your facts wrong. Many coaches are now recruiting juniors, not just Bronco. Texas had 21 juniors committed 2 months ago, but two recounted including Ross Apo, our new commit. Alabama, Stanford and a host of other schools have given out nearly all of their 2010 scholarships. Is this the best way to recruit? Who knows? But if I've got a chance to get a commitment from a highly prized junior now, I'd take that rather than waiting until he's finished his senior season to then offer a scholarship. IMHO
Don't Worry Be Happy | 6:28 a.m. July 6, 2009
He can join Heaps and start printing 2013 National Champions t-shirts this preseason.

No worries | 12:05 a.m. July 3, 2009:
When BYU destroys Utah next year and they will you can talk all you want about BYU recruits.

You mean how they destroyed Utah on the 4th & 18 or Harline? Face the facts Utah will have building year yet no way do they lose by more then 10 points.

Go Utes | 6:34 a.m. July 6, 2009
Steve | 12:10 a.m. July 3, 2009
Ute fans have no room to talk...we are killing you on the recruiting front for the 2010 class....i dont even wanna hear it!

Great you can start printing t-shirts with "Quest for 2010 Recruiting Champions" while Utah in 2010 will be knocking on another BCS birth.

Win Ranked Teams | 6:59 a.m. July 6, 2009
start winning? | 7:21 a.m. July 3, 2009
Three consecutive ten win seasons is not winning? Please explain that to me.

Sure, how many RANKED teams has BYU won in those seasons? Utah and TCU were rebuilding and so were mediocre at best during that time.

Now in 2008 which two teams slaughtered BYU? I'll give you a hint: The only two teams they played that were RANKED.

BYU hasn't done anything special since 1996 besides beat-up on a WEAK conference.
2013 National Champs | 7:31 a.m. July 6, 2009
Rather then live in the present its either 1984 or now 2013 national championship becasue of Jake Heaps. Granted he's a high recruit but he's still a prep.

Please stop printing your 2013 title t-shirts at least until you have beaten a ranked team in this millennium.

Trophies and awards at BYU will never be seen in Salt Lake. Tradition and legacy is built over generations.

Tradition and legacy and trophies hasn't delivered a undefeated season since 1984 which is what it will take to even break the current BCS system. Nor has it allowed BYU to consistently win RANKED teams.

Only respect BYU gets is the 84 championship. Did the 84 team deserve it more then the 2008 team?

NOPE! On the FIELD Utah in 2008 accomplished more than the 84 team except for the fact that the judges gave FL the title. Utah Beat 4 ranked teams 2 in top 10 and how many did BYU beat in 84?
Recruit | 8:09 a.m. July 6, 2009
He spurned UConn, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Bryant University to come to mighty Provo.

What a recruiting coup this is for Donko.

This is news why? They guy sounds like a borderline D-I talent with the schools on him early.
Scoobie | 10:30 a.m. July 6, 2009
Jeff
Just to point out.... Who ever wrote the 1 small article on the Utes new cornerback commitment put more in 2 or 3 sentences about his abilities than you did in your entire article. At least they spoke of his total tackles of which "41" were unassisted and the kid is twenty pounds heavier to boot. You dropped Danny Ainges name expecting total awe from your readers but failed to make any supporting points with the kid's abilities. I sure hope we hear a lot more of Jordon Johnson breaking up Ute passing plays than we do of Joseph Smith being being in the faces of BYU receivers and busting up plays all day long. With a name like that the embarassment would just be too much. What an Irony that would be.
RE: Don't Worry Be Happy | 12:17 p.m. July 6, 2009
Last year was a rebuilding year as well for YBU and lost to the Utes 24-48. Max , by Bronky's admission tried to press things and hurry too much. He threw 5 interceotion and was satar gazing on his back, When he wasn't Koa Misi was batting down passes.
Does this sound like this years recruiting class with only 6 scholarships left and that all of the blew brothers are all over Heaps and forgot Max ? How soon you forget when in that pipe dream of yours. I do give Geneva water credit for the lead poisoning in your coconuts down there in Utah County.
whers the speed? | 1:13 p.m. July 6, 2009
brocos not adding alot of speed. have u seen the 40 times on these kids. look at tcus recruits forty times. another ten win season in 2010 11 12 13. with losses against the 3 fast teams they play each year.
Tyler | 2:16 p.m. July 6, 2009
I listed links showing no offers for those players...

Desnews didnt publish it, I guess cause it shows another website.

Facts are those players show no offers under a major service.

Current class rankings.

BYU 13th
Utah 58th
TCU 59th
Hawaii 64th only 10 points behinds the Utes.

Houston and SMU both have better classes so far.

AS far as postions go...

BYU has 5th best QB class
10th best OL class
11th best DL class
4th best LB class

BYU had a two of the top 20 Saftys last year...

So get ready to see BYU play outstanding Defense... when this takes shape over the next few years... BYU will really be hard to beat.

No ute fan can argue if BYU had a outstanding D they would be very very hard to defeat.

Well here it comes Utah Fans... we going to be playing super D soon...

2008 BYU's Best Team since 96 | 2:32 p.m. July 6, 2009
RE: Don't Worry Be Happy | 12:17 p.m. July 6, 2009
Last year was a rebuilding year as well for YBU and lost to the Utes 24-48.
------------------------

It wasn't a rebuilding year at all not according to Bronco's "Quest for Perfection" and #16 Preseason rankings.

This was BYU's top talent since 1996 and they failed miserably against ranked opponents and a 5th place Pac-10 team.
re: Tyler | 3:05 p.m. July 6, 2009
Silly Cougar fans. They think that a system that accumulates total points based on QUANTITY of recruits is a real measure when signing day is 8 MONTHS away.

BYU has some nice kids committed, but lets not get too excited. When you already have 20 kids of your class of say 25 committed and accounted for, of course you will have a great accumulated tally for the class. Do they not teach Math 101 at BYU anymore? Utah has 8 kids so far, TCU about the same.

BYU's class this year looks similar to Utah's from last year. The Utes had a 5-star, 2 4-stars, and a bunch of 3-stars. And guess what, in the end that put them in the 30-40 range for recruiting classes, once the powerhouses clean up in February.

I'm also confused how getting a QB will translate to a better defense? You keep living the dream, it will be ending quickly come September.

He doesn't have any 'religion' right now, but I
would bet gold bars that he is LDS before he
graduates. Are there any other non-lds
players on the BYU team?

Fantastic, another 5-10 cornerback that can be abused by everyone else's 6-5 receivers.
Re: whers the speed? | 10:19 p.m. July 6, 2009
You're joking right? BYU has been recruiting tons of speed. Have you even seen the recruits we've landed? Most of them aren't top 25 recruits for nothing. We've recruited more speed now than we've had since the championship teams in the 90's and 80's.
Cynic | 6:51 a.m. July 7, 2009
I'd love to see a BYU recruit at corner that's taller than 5'10" or 5' 9". I personally think our coaches have a weakness. They see too much of themselves in their DB recruits. Small guys with lots of heart, but not very big. Remember the last Notre Dame game? Big wideouts will destroy our secondary.
hey cynic | 2:48 p.m. July 7, 2009
don't worry about it. The corners have speed that's what the problem has been. If you are concerned about size then have the linebackers drop into pass coverage.
Anonymous | 12:44 p.m. July 9, 2009
Love it, an article about an athlete verbally committing to BYU and it turns into a BYU Utah fist fight everytime. About the actual player, on film he looks awesome, much like utahs recruit lazard, great quickness and flat out able to make people miss. It will be fun to see how things turn out in a few years.
MT in MD | 11:29 a.m. July 13, 2009
Umm, it's the middle of July. Other than the MLB All-Star break through Wednesday, what is there to write about? The radio sports talk shows out here in DC are running through their traditional summer topics: the Kohler toilet paper survey (fold or crumple?); the changed parking policies at Redskin stadium; and who are the best DC-based Jewish athletes of all time?

Come on, people! It's summer and not a whole lot for sports writers to write about. Give it a rest.
