Division I-AA | 10:50 p.m. July 2, 2009
Aside from the fact there is no "Division I-AA" - it has a different name now -- the Cougars are psyched about stealing a DB from UConn and some "Division I-AA" schools?

Couldn't out recruit SUU or Utah State?

This kid better have SERIOUS jets.
Dave | 10:50 p.m. July 2, 2009
Wow!! Congrats on this big time recruit.. You beat out Connecticut and three Div 1AA schools.
j- dawg | 10:54 p.m. July 2, 2009
the utes should know as well as anyone that there are such things as diamonds in the rough.

When BYU destroys Utah next year and they will you can talk all you want about BYU recruits.
Steve | 12:10 a.m. July 3, 2009
Ute fans have no room to talk...we are killing you on the recruiting front for the 2010 class....i dont even wanna hear it!
Tyler | 12:45 a.m. July 3, 2009
Beat out a BCS school cornholes.... how many Ute commits have you done that with...

Lets look shall we...

Joe smith CB 1 star... no other offers

Brian Blechen QB 3 star... no other offers

Princeton Collins WR 3 star... no other offers

Terrell Reese S 1 star... no other offers

Jacob Hale OLB 3 star... good job beating out SMU

Jow Kruger DE 3 star... no other offers

So you guys have lets see no one good and beat out SMU and your saying what ?

13th best class already for us...

Utah behind Baylor, Vandy, Indiana, SMU, TCU, but hey your 1 point ahead of BALL STATE at 59th place... and to think Hawaii of the WAC is 60th just two points behind....

Get a freaking Clue.

But Steve...... | 12:48 a.m. July 3, 2009
Can you beat us on the field?

Utes have won 5 of the last 7. Kewgs were handed two end of game gifts or it would be 7 for 7.

Utes are regarded as the top non-BCS program, followed by Boise State and TCU.

Two BCS Bowl wins! Oh, and they were in THIS century! Blah blah blah the Y barely beat the Big 10's 6th place team in 1984.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! the WHY is officially ahead in 2010 recruiting!!!! Way to pull this cornerback away from always tough Bryant University!!

Re Steve | 12:57 a.m. July 3, 2009
Really??? How about this. Until your defense can lock down CSU, UNLV, Wash State, Tulsa, Utah State, and all the other powerhouses you play....i don't even wanna hear how great the 16 year olds that you've signed are! Walk the freaking walk in THIS decade bro!
All about BYU | 1:12 a.m. July 3, 2009
So I'm up going through the sports articles...and am wondering why this article about a little known BYU recruit already has Ute fans on edge, and the Ute Quarterback article as "0 Comments." Looks like Ute fans love to follow BYU more than their own team. And, did you get the "follow BYU" part?...just in case Ute missed it.
RE all about byu | 1:28 a.m. July 3, 2009
Translation to your post. "We can't beat you without magic, we can't even GO to a BCS game WITH a cupcake schedule, U accomplished OUR Quest for Perfection, You OWN us in the rivalry, and now even JOSEPH SMITH is a Ute....What can I say to make me feel better? I know! I can play the Stadium attendance card (even though last year you averaged over a sellout) or the....you only hate the Y, you arent really fans of your school card, or our 17 year old high school kids are better than yours, OR, if all else fails I will turn to the ever present.....Once Upon a Time....long long ago....we won a National Championship over Bo Didley Tech."

That's what you really meant to say "All about BYU" wasn't it? Well If you didnt make it so easy zoobs, then we would stop.
Re: Tyler | 1:30 a.m. July 3, 2009
Do a little homework before embarrassing yourself.

Smith: 4 other offers including Iowa State, Wyoming and New Mexico

Collins: 2 other offers, Missouri and UTEP

Reese: 2 other offers, Arizona State and Colorado

Kruger: 9 other offers: BYU, UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Washington and Washington State

Huff: 2 other offers, Minnesota and Missouri

Hale: 3 other offers, SMU, Tulsa and Houston

No back to the cornerback in this article.... BYU beat out UCONN, Bryant University and New Hamshire State.... Woooo Hoooooooo!!

As you say.... Get a freaking clue!!

RE all about BYU | 1:34 a.m. July 3, 2009
Hmmm I'm sorry, maybe you'll have to show me where we follow BYU. In BCS appearances? In BCS Victories? Maybe in Bowl wins? Or maybe in wins versus ranked opponents? Could you please be more specific? Will your "Marriage Family and Human Development" degree allow it?
Re: All about BYU | 1:36 a.m. July 3, 2009
Let's see if the Y can follow the Utes to a BCS Bowl!

Utah has the longest bowl winning streak AND the longest winning streak in the nation! "just in case YOU missed it."

Try to get a little closer in following us, seems that TCU slipped in front of you.

Isn't it funny that all the Y fans comment about Utah on an article about a cornerback that they snatched away from powerhouse Bryant University?
@ Tyler | 2:18 a.m. July 3, 2009
Hey bro, there is no point in comparing where teams recruiting classes rank in July. Most teams are going to be getting verbals all the way up through February '10. So it's probably best to just chill out.

Most of BYU's recruits commit early because they're LDS and that's the only place they want to go play. That doesn't make BYU's recruits any more special than anyone else's.
Scoobie | 3:26 a.m. July 3, 2009
What was Jeff thinking when he wrote this article in the first place??? The only credible thing in it is the mentioning of Danny Ainge. Hey... Ainge may only be doing some Missionary work. As far as this kids abilities go there really is nothing to base a whole lot on from the article. For all we know he may just be some scrawny kid who may get to play a couple of quarters in the backfield his entire BYU career. Walking away from UConn doesn't mean a whole lot unless the kid is a two sporter and plays Basketball as well. Im sorry but I have to agree with our utey friends this time around...and I don't do that very often.
I don't get it.... | 3:37 a.m. July 3, 2009
I'm 36 years old now. Growing up, I was a DIE HARD cougar fan. I loved watching the cougs destroy the utes. And that happened almost every year. But now I've grown up, and am more mature. Is there really a reason to not be a fan of both teams. I understand the rivalry, but lets get real. The utes have won 2 BCS bowl games. OK, we got some good recruits. But we NEED to start winning on the field. Otherwise, how can the cougar fans talk smack about anything???? You guys make yourselves look like idiots, and give all cougar fans a bad name. Join reality, eh?
To Utah fans  | 7:14 a.m. July 3, 2009
Why are you here talking about Utah's "impressive" winning streak and amazing recruits? This is an article about a non-LDS, African American kid from Massachusetts that chose to attend Brigham Young University. He is BYU's lowest profile commit this year. I guess it's because the recruiting news has been so ridiculously good for BYU lately, you're starting to get a little sick of hearing about the amazing talent lining up to play with Jake Heaps.

The fact of the matter is Utah has some nice recruits, too. Sure, they aren't as impressive as BYU's recruits this year, nor are there as many, but they still have a few decent athletes. Hopefully, they will be able to qualify academically for you guys. Don't worry, though, Ute fans. Few BCS schools are having a recruiting year that compares to BYU's, so buck up, little campers!
start winning? | 7:21 a.m. July 3, 2009
Three consecutive ten win seasons is not winning? Please explain that to me. There are only 3-4 other teams in the country with more wins in the last three seasons, and one of them is not Utah.
aj arizona | 7:25 a.m. July 3, 2009
Steve Young was recruited by North Carolina and BYU, that was it! And your point is?

We've seen your so called legacy room Utah, and we've seen BYU's.

Trophies and awards at BYU will never be seen in Salt Lake.

Tradition and legacy is built over generations. Conference Championships, National Championship, players in the NFL, Heisman, Outlands, Davey O'Briens, Sammy Baugh's, Doak Walker, Consensus All-Americans, College Hall of Fame, Pro Hall of Fame, Super Bowls, NFL MVP's etc etc.

Legacy programs can be down, but they are never out for long, ask Oklahoma.

True, Utah has two BCS wins. Some nice accomplishments to be sure.

10 teams every year play in the illegal, contrived, bigoted caste system called the BCS. Big deal.

BYU wants that opportunity, and they will one day get it. But will Utah ever equal BYU's other achievements? Not likely.

Look Utah, you will always be Tommy Smothers, Avis rental, and little brother. It's ok, know your place and be comfortable.

Ah, Utah, the only University in America which won't honor it's founder with a statue. Proud alumns, Ponns & Fleishmann, and Ted Bundy. Just kiddin.
re: Scoobie | 7:31 a.m. July 3, 2009
Have you seen Johnson's highlight film? He's F-A-S-T and he's very shifty. Did I mention he's quick?

He's the kind of CB BYU never gets for four years.

That's OK, go ahead and agree with your Ute friends. I'll trust BYU's evaluation of the kid.

You do realize that BYU is having their best recruiting year ever in the history of the football program and for that reason they are being extremely stingy on scholarship offers, right? Tayo Fabuluje has only two stars and is not yet evaluated by scout.com, but has almost every school in the Big 12 begging him for his services. Just because a kid hasn't been evaluated doesn't mean he isn't D-1 material.

Nobody knows if Jordan Johnson will be a bust yet. The same can be said for Jake Heaps. However, most experts agree BYU is putting together the best ever class of any non-BCS school, and this 2010 class comes right behind the 2009 class, which was also regarded as one of BYU's best ever. BYU is gaining momentum - the sleeping giant is awakening.

How about bowl victories in those past three years?? Where do you stand there?
Bob in line | 8:20 a.m. July 3, 2009
This is like listening to a junior high school debate team.

A kid is coming to BYU to play football, next thing we are casting insults three decades old.

Whatever. Gotta love free speech at its best.
re:re:ty.ler | 8:22 a.m. July 3, 2009

from utie fans, the more it shows that they have some real concerns about the future of their own program. Their initial reaction is run down any recruit of BYU's because they know that this only shows how dismal a job of recruiting kyle is doing.
Little Bro - Alive & Well | 8:38 a.m. July 3, 2009
Little brother up North can't seem to get enough of BYU! It is a well known fact that Yewts would rather have BYU lose than their own team win. And they call themselves fans???

Go post on the article about your next quarterback that is going to lead you to "glory".

Congrats to BYU. Looks like they have a SOLID recruting class at this point, in spite of what little brother says. Hopefully it will translate to a lot of wins on the field over the next few years!
Re: Re: Start Winning 7:34 am | 8:42 a.m. July 3, 2009
"How about bowl victories in those past three years?? Where do you stand there?"

What, you mean two out of three? The point is, BYU has indeed been winning. Recruiting classes are an indication of the direction of the program, and despite the success of Utah this last year, BYU's program appears to be on the rise.

I recall the Ute's assistant coach making the claim that the best thing about their BCS win was the influx of great recruits. I was ready to agree with him at the time and believe that a lot of the typically prized Mormon recruits were going to go their way. Clearly, I was wrong.

BYU fans are a joke. That is why I don't care how many games Utah loses or wins as long as we beat BYU and shut your fans up.
@ Re: Re: Start Winning 7:34 am | 9:17 a.m. July 3, 2009
BYU gets the same type of recruits each year...the LDS kids whose parents went to BYU and instructed their children from a very early age that BYU is the place they need to go to school.

These type of recruits will come to BYU year in and year out, regardless of who is coaching the team or what the win-loss record is. It's both a blessing and a curse for BYU: it gives them a nice base of recruits each year but also places a ceiling on how good they can be depending on the quality of LDS athletes at the time.

They may sign 1-2 non-LDS kids / year, but by in large most recruits fit in the same boat. So your comment about Utah not being able to take away the prized Mormon recruits is way off base. It shows that you don't understand that there is actually a pretty small number of recruits that BYU and Utah go head-to-head for. Utah has been focusing on recruiting athletic kids from CA and TX.

Please learn each teams recruiting strategy before posting.
Why? | 9:27 a.m. July 3, 2009
Why is it that Utah can recruit the LDS base almost as well as BYU, has an huge advantage over BYU in getting the non-LDS athlete, has even a bigger advantage in landing the African-American athlete - and yet can't take those superior athletes and translate them into wins on the field? In fact, the ONLY time Utah has been dominant over BYU during the past 35 years is when BYU hit rock bottom with Crowton as their coach earlier this decade. Other than that, at best (depending on what stretch of years you look at) Utah has barely broken even with BYU.

Why is that Utah fans? You should be beating us year after year after year. So what's your excuse?
RE: To Utah fans | 7:14 a.m.  | 10:07 a.m. July 3, 2009
BYU has good verbal commits (not recruits) this year, I'll give you that. What you people refuse to acknowledge is that they will only rise to the level of the coaching. BYU does not have the coaching necessary to get these kids to their potential. Question is...how long is it before the kids begin to realize it??
Re: start winning? | 7:21 a.m.  | 10:13 a.m. July 3, 2009
Three consecutive 10 win seasons with a soft schedule is nothing to get excited about. Don't believe me? Wait and see what happens this year!

I read an article yesterday discussing the best Non-BCS programs. Hands down, the consensus was Utah, followed by Boise St., followed by TCU, followed by BYU and another team from the East (I don't recall who). Your three 10 win seasons are really not that impressive but hay, it's all you got so talk it up!
Re 9:17 AM | 10:29 a.m. July 3, 2009
I have been hearing for years how BYU is no more holy than Utah is; all we need to do is to look at the number of return missionaries from both schools and compare. I believe I recall several of the players BYU has recruited also received interest if not offers from Utah. You seriously do not believe that Utah looks for Mormon recruits?

It was not long ago that a good number of the top Mormon players were no longer coming to BYU. That is simply not the case any more.

Clearly, however, I was wrong. I am so sorry for actually having an opinion. I must bow down to your superior inside knowledge of everything to do with BYU and Utah football. I must never have an opinion again and especially never post on a chat board.

Obviously you do not get the point of my post. If Jeff Call is going to make a big issue of Danny Ainge guideing some unknown kid here to BYU he could at least give some actual pertinent information on the kids athletic abilites. No I have not seen the hilight film as it is not part of the article. Before you go on a Mad Hatter against someone's posting ensure that you understand their original intent....and that my friend is that there is nothing substantial in the article....Danny Ainge's name is the only thing that comes close to even raising an eyebrow.....

And Thank you very much for your benevolent insight to BYU's recruiting bonanza...I humbly have to admit that even though I grew up just west and down the street from the Old Smith Field house, Graduated from the Y in 1981, having been exposed to little unknowns like Marc Wilson, Jim McMahon, and guess who.... Danny Ainge...I would never have been able to figure out that this was such a great year recruiting wise without your supeior knowledge. You should have wrote the article. Point Made.

As I have said before The Rivalry will take care of itself. It doesn't need idiots asking the same old dumb questions.
RE: RE: To Utah fans | 11:41 a.m. July 3, 2009
Well, since BYU has had six players from last year land on NFL rosters this year, my guess is your incorrect in your opinion. There is no need for them to "wake up" as you put as long as they are signing deals to play ball in the NFL.

Have you ever seen a class of fans with a bigger inferiority complex than ewe fans? Seriously they have the lowest self esteem of any fan base in America. I love ewe fans who distort history by ripping on this one recruit knowing full well that Jake Heaps was considered the number one quarter back recruit in the nation. Stop bragging about a 2010 recruiting class...in 5 or so years when it pays dividends, talk then. Other than Beck to Harline a few years back, we've had nothing to brag about, so stop. Admit they've been better and just hope we can catch up. We've had our runs of being better and now it's temporarily their turn. Put away the Quest t-shirts and stop making the rest of us BYU fans look bad. We'll be fine next year and we may start our next run while they have to replace so many key positions and coaches.
10 win seasons | 1:18 p.m. July 3, 2009
I keep hearing about the 3 consecutive 10 win seasons. The fact is that half the programs in the country would have won ten games or more. When was the last time you beat a team that finished the season ranked? If you beat OU this season great but until then the 10 win seasons are just fotter for Bronko to tell the Cougar club.

If 10 win seasons were so easy, why couldn't the Utes do it?

In fact, if it were that easy...why couldn't the Utes beat UNLV, New Mexico, Air Force, BYU, etc. the past couple years?

Why do you consistently finish 3-4th place?

If it were so easy?
Please | 2:02 p.m. July 3, 2009
Please BYU fans, stop embarrassing us. The U is where we want to be right now. They're on top, not us. Recruitment smack? That doesn't mean anything when they just went undefeated and won a BCS bowl. Our recruiting class looks good. Let's be proud of that. However, the main reason we are getting a lot of attention right now is because of Bronco's recruitment phylosophy. Use up all but a few of your scholarships on high school juniors. If this was the right way to go everyone else would do it. Other teams offer some juniors, but mostly seniors. Please stop defending Bronco's excuses and join me in demanding results on the field, not in attendance or recruiting. Let's see, most of these kids have have one year of HS, then a redshirt year, then a two year mission, then four years to play. Add it all up, most of these kids will be college seniors in 8 years. Some are younger and will be seniors in 9 years. That's why you don't blow all of your scholarships so early. And don't give me 10 wins, blah, blah, blah.
