We can celebrate independence if we know what it truly cost. We can celebrate independence if we understand the flag we wave, "and the Republic for which it stands".
We can be grateful for exceptional people who valued the freedom of this land and were willing to fight for it, yet who, on the other hand, eschewed foreign entanglements, alliances and treaties that reduce or destroy national independence.
We can give a little thoughtful study to founding documents this week to give greater meaning to the day. We can reject all tyranny including the tyranny of untrammeled democracy which robs even large, law-abiding minorites of legitimate rights to life, liberty and property.
This article has nothing to do with July 4th or patriotism or anything of the sort. It could be written or posted any day of the year, all the same. It's not just "tangential," as you say; it's a totally different topic. She just put the headline on it to get people's attention....that's what they always try to do with headlines.
