Technically, the relationship was not consensual at all, since a minor does not have the legal standing to consent to sex with an adult. That's why it's illegal.

Even though she was 15 she still has the right to make her own decisons. People just use their age as an excuse. People assume things when they don't know what is going on and what the situation was really about.

Even with what I have read I have come to believe that it was consensual.

No laws broken | 5:34 a.m. June 20, 2009
Hypocrisy in Utah is rampant once again. A 15 year old is by law able to make their own decisions. Any child can act and behave in any manner they wish and no one can interfere with their decisions. It is the law that parents or other adults cannot think for children and make decisions for them. If a child is determined to do their own thing, we cannot stop them because to do so is interfering with their own choices, until hypocrisy steps in. The minor's consent cannot be used against him.

Then were are the parents that allow their daughter to cohabitate with an adult? By law parents cannot interfere with minor childrens choices, child welfare can, but not parents.

It is also deplorable that we have this sex offender registry, it is unconstitutional to endorse persecution of individuals for their lifestyle and no crimes being committed. Persecution is for the prison system, not society and the public at large.

My parents and grand parents would roll over in their graves at hearing that consensual sex between a teen and an adult was illegal.

Lets see: My grand parents had 9 children who all had children who had children who also had children. I cannot count even at a family reunion. Hundreds of law abiding people who contribute to our society.

I agree the registry for sex offenders is a joke only because it doesn't work. However, to say that this is a lifestyle choice is appalling. I worked with juvenile sex offenders here for a decade. Molesting & raping acts of violence are not lifestyle choices. To say they are is sick. Being a sex offender is like being a drug addict in the sense that the individual needs to say they did it and will always be one however they can be part of society. That person needs to take ownership for no matter how many people know. However here in Utah more money is thrown at the victimizer than the victim, especially juveniles. 99% of adults who are sex offenders have a confidential history of the same offences they have as juveniles. Juveniles need to be put on the registry too. I'm more concerned about the kid down the street with offences that the adult. Owning up to being a victimizer and having the public know is not persecution. Ask the victims if you disagree.
