You people are ridiculous. It's an article about GRASS. Save all your worthless banter until September.
Cougars Fan | 5:33 p.m. May 31, 2009
New grass is great and all, but the season cant get here fast enough. All the pathetic fair weather Ute fans replying to every article about BYU is getting old. I know you dont have a life but come on at least try and get one.

"Consistently get 10-win seasons and then you can brag."

Consistent 10 win seasons get you invited to the Vegas Bowl.

Yipeee.

Okay, no more cherry picking... | 7:52 p.m. May 31, 2009
No cherry picking of years... In all head to head games against BYU, Utah is 50-30-4.

Scoreboard!!!

Period... End of Story...Enough Said.

Re: 7:52 | 8:26 p.m. May 31, 2009
Enough said? Who made you the arbiter? You can talk record all you want, but since you just cherry picked the win loss stat, how about we give the full picture. As in number of overall top 25 and top 20 finishes, heisman trophys, outland trophys, outland trophys, o'brien trophys, doak walker trophys, national championships, bowl appearances, and number of wins against top 25 teams. You see, just because Utah dominated BYU in the early years does not mean they were a national program. The truth is BYU made a big appearance on the national scene long before Utah did and they still get national respect because of that. The way they choose the NC was changed because of BYU. Now when Utah can say the same in the middle of a thirty year streak like BYU had, then they can lay claim to having surpassed BYU. Until then it's just Cherry picking.
Re: 7:52 | 9:05 p.m. May 31, 2009
So with all of BYU's prominence and national respect gained over 30 years of excellence how is it that they can't get invited to a BCS game?
BroncoNation | 11:12 p.m. May 31, 2009
My my my, the Utes just can't get over playing in a high school stadium, they so rag on a real football field. Bronco Stadium is even better than than albatross in the foothills. 36-3, do those numbers mean anything?
Short Memories | 12:55 a.m. June 1, 2009
All this talk about BYU doing so poorly is a little overstated.

Lets see:

Three 10 win seasons in a row.
Four Bowl appearances in a row.
A 59-0 shut out over a Pac 10 team - I don't remember other in-state teams doing that.
Won the conference championship 2 of the last 3 years.

Sounds like they are doing just fine.

Re:9:05 | 7:07 a.m. June 1, 2009
So with the yewts going to two BCS games in 5 years you still don't understand how the system works? I give them props for two great seasons in 5 years. Lets see it for 30 years before you start with all yhe smack.
jefe57 | 7:22 a.m. June 1, 2009
BYU's field has been old and beat up for years. If you looked closely you could see puffs of dust come up from every tackle. Chunks of turf were flying all over the field last season. I'm excited to see the Cougars perform on a state-of-the-art field. The field should have been replaced sooner, but it'll be great to see the stadium with the new field this fall.
A 59-0 shutout...... | 7:23 a.m. June 1, 2009
and then Uuuu dropped a simple bowl game to the 7-5 mediocre team in the Sin Bowl!!

A real great thing to spout about.....I'd hold my tongue until you can do something!!!!

10 wins got 'ya nothin'---try wining and going to the BCS--LOL

Re: 7:07 a.m. | 7:25 a.m. June 1, 2009
"So with the yewts going to two BCS games in 5 years you still don't understand how the system works?"

**************************

With two BCS victories in 5 years, I think the Utes do understand how the system works.

What is it that the Cougars don't understand about getting to a BCS game?
Grow Up | 7:34 a.m. June 1, 2009
I'm a Y fan, but was glad to see the Utes success last year. Too bad others (on both sides) are so immature.
Mr. BYU fan | 7:53 a.m. June 1, 2009
To the Ute fans: I'm still waiting for an answer to my question. How many national championships has Utah won? In the last 5 years when you were winning all those bowl games? In the last 20 years? 30 years? 50 years? Ever? In all the times you have beaten BYU, have you ever won a national championship? Anybody? Anybody??? Hellooooooo. Any...any...any...body...body...body home..ome...ome...ome? Wow! The silence is deafening.
You're Welcome | 8:48 a.m. June 1, 2009
From a Ute fan, it is from the bottom of my heart that the University of Utah has graciously handed out millions of dollars to the lowly members of the MWC who can't make it to the BCS.

Bronco, Kyle accepts your thanks for providing the funds to renovate your field with his BCS winnings.

Redistribution is alive and well in the MWC.
Natural vs. Artificial | 8:51 a.m. June 1, 2009
Kudos to Bronco and company for having a natural grass field. Recent survey of professional football players shows a distinct preference for natural grass. Artificial surfaces cause more injuries (when compared to well constructed fields natural grass fields - not those that are as hard as a rock because of bad design/maintenance). Artificial turf is also very hot (i've melted shoes in one game on them). As a result, many pro stadiums are going back to natural grass. College and high schools seem to be moving toward artificial because they erroneously think that they cost less to maintain. The only reason to have artificial grass is if you are playing on it all of the time to the point that it can't stand up to the abuse (not the case for a football stadium field that isn't used for much else). Bottom-line, I'd much rather play on the BYU field than the Ute field. Most players would agree.
Re: BroncoNation | 9:00 a.m. June 1, 2009

Highschool stadium?
Well, call it whatever you want, but it's helped Utah to 2 BCS seasons.
You Broco Stadium helped BYU to 0 BCS seasons --just empty promises.

Hahaha!!!!
Re: Mr. BYU Fan | 9:06 a.m. June 1, 2009
"In all the times you have beaten BYU, have you ever won a national championship? Anybody? Anybody??? Hellooooooo."

The "silence" would be a lot less "deafening" if this site's moderators wouldn't be so blue-blood-biased. I've posted this before, but since you asked...

Utah Football National Championship Titles:

(1) FansPoll
"FansPoll" is the only website of its kind that lets fans choose who the next collegiate football champion should be. The fans have spoken and confirmed what may believe, that the true national champ is Utah."

(2) CollegeFootballTalk
"...we recognized the significance of Utah's accomplishments and we declared the Utes the CollegeFootballTalk National Champions. Our readers agreed, making Utah the overwhelming choice as the rightful 2008 National Champs."

And there's a Football National Championship trophy in the trophy case up here in SLC. Feel free to stop by and see it anytime you like. It's pretty!
Re: 9:06 | 9:30 a.m. June 1, 2009
National Championship trophy from whom? The pee-wee league of America? Did Deseret First make you national champs? Until you win the OFFICIAL NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP, the "Fanspoll" and "Colegefootballtalk" drabble is useless. You may have a couple of gymnastics trophies and that one b-ball trophy from the forties, but nothing to compare with BYU's football and numerous other trophies for XC, track, volleyball, and new this year: RUGBY!
skeptic | 9:38 a.m. June 1, 2009
RE: 9:06 a.m. poster

The "FansPoll"? Are you kidding me???? I wonder how many fans would have taken the Utes over Florida? I sure wouldn't have. Your team had a terrific year last year. Be happy with that. You may have been the 2nd best team in America. Too many Ute fans live in Ute La La Land.

I love natural grass
huh? | 10:08 a.m. June 1, 2009
I'm a BYU fan, but was it really necessary to spend money to ship turf in from California? Aren't we taking ourselves a little too serious here? It's grass...get over it. Maybe next year we should have the Marriott Center's new basketball floor made out of Redwood trees. This is stupid.
@ 9:30 and 9:38 | 11:01 a.m. June 1, 2009
Since the DesNews moderators won't print websites, I gave you the name. You'll just have to put .com at the end. Or you can come up to SLC and see the trophy for yourself.

Zoobies like to pretend to overlook the fact that in 1984, you played NO ONE! You squeaked by an eventual 3-win Pitt team to open the season, then escaped a 6-5 Michigan team to finish your season. Good thing the tdS didn't have to face a 7-5 Arizona team.

The '04 Utes THOROUGHLY DOMINATED EVERY OPPONENT. The '84 kewgs escaped FIVE UNRANKED teams by a TD or less. The '08 Utes beat FOUR teams finishing their seasons in the Top-25; two of whom were Top-10. If the '08 Ute team was a legitimate #2 team, it would have been as the #2 team in Ute HISTORY. The #1 Ute team would have been their '04 squad, and BOTH superior to anything every emanating from Utah County.
re: skeptic | 11:16 a.m. June 1, 2009
"I wonder how many fans would have taken the Utes over Florida?"

Most of 'em. It was the fans who voted for them.

You know, for a group of self-congratulatory nobodies clamoring for national recognition, you sure do seem to ignore what the FANS think. But, I guess I can understand that. Because they don't think your '84 trophy is valid. They don't think you EARNED it. They created the Bowl Coalition and BCS to prevent another team backing into the #1 spot.

Utah FINISHED #2 because of where they STARTED. Had we been ranked where Phil Steele had us in his preseason poll, it would have been us playing for the National Title. Now, we can speculate, but never know, who -- Utah or Florida -- is the TRUE 2008 NATIONAL CHAMPION.

But as long as it's a matter of VOTING...then there's nothing illegitimate about FansPoll or CollegeFootballTalk VOTING for the Utes the Championship.

And speaking of "votes", the Utes earned 1/3 of the AP's #1 votes.
re: skeptic (cont) | 11:20 a.m. June 1, 2009
Utah's '04 and '08 seasons were both greater achievements than the tdS' '84 season. Any zoob who will argue their NC Trophy > the Utes' Fiesta or Sugar Bowl Trophies -- by the mere fact that it is called an NC Trophy -- must also believe that Paris Hilton is smarter than they are since she makes more money than they do.

So do you?

Legacy is currently a faction in the WWE or fancy word used by someone trying to hang on past greatness.

All these comments make both sides sound like Boise State fans. Nobody wants that reputation. Utes have been good lately, Cougs have as well. Stop ripping on history! As for bearly beating teams, did you by chance watch any football other then MTN West? If I recall Bama (your wipping boy) squeaked quite a few out themselfs.
As a true football fan, I'm excited to see 3 decade grass get replaced, and hope someday to see a playoff.
rusby | 12:04 p.m. June 1, 2009
We went out on the new turf in the middle of a downpour on a Sunday evening. We ran around and we were surprised by how grippy the grass was, and we were wearing church shoes. As my father-in-law said after, it was probably as close to man romance as you could get.

NC Trophy > Fiesta + Sugar Bowl Trophies.
Re:11:01 and 11:16 | 12:14 p.m. June 1, 2009
Wow, and yewt fans like to call BYU's NC mythical? You just redefined the word "mythical". Just make sure you carefully pull your head out of the clouds so as not to hurt yourself. And way to get a self proclaimed NC trophy. We are all proud of you. That's about as little brother as you can get. Way to pull up some obscure website that nobody has ever heard of to back up your rediculous claim. LOL
Turfpro | 12:31 p.m. June 1, 2009
Although we (ProFields Sports Turf) provided the synthetic turf perimeter for BYU's Lavell Edwards Stadium I prefer natural grass for most outdoor sports when it can be maintained correctly. Most natural turf fields are not or can not be maintained to that degree, especially at the the high school level. BYU's new natural grass field with synthetic perimeter is spectacular. Please take note how seamlessly the synthetic turf perimeter matches the real grass. More importantly it matches the feel and playability of natural grass. We support BYU football and are amazed how well they do given the parameters they must work within. It doesn't hurt me either that Utah has done well. I am a BYU fan, but not a Utah hater. If you want more information on premium synthetic turf products please see zeroscapeturf dot com. Yes - I just advertised.

While football gets props, the baseball team finihed below .500 for the season. They happen to get lucky to get in the post season. Below .500 is NOTHING to be proud about.
Re: 12:14 | 12:47 p.m. June 1, 2009
...said the fanbase who have "never heard of" Phil Steele when he picked the Utes ahead of the kewgs last preseason.

Here's a quote you can pay special attention to:

"But as long as it's a matter of VOTING...then there's nothing illegitimate about FansPoll or CollegeFootballTalk VOTING for the Utes the Championship."

That's right. S/he said "...as long as it's a matter of VOTING..." Zoobs CANNOT claim they have a Nat'l Championship earned by play on the field in a "Championship game". Their title is ONLY IN VOTES. If they can claim their title is valid, then they CANNOT invalidate the VERY REAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY sitting in the Utes Trophy Case, as OUR title is ALSO IN VOTES. Only using a larger surveyed group.

BTW. FansPoll and CollegeFootballTalk are NATIONAL polls, not "self proclaimed" or administered by Utah Alumni.

"Way to pull up some obscure website that nobody has ever heard of to back up your rediculous [sic] claim."

...and way to reject said claims by FAILING TO INVESTIGATE or REFUTE.

Willfully ignorant zoobs!

What are you trying to say here? That "better" stuff has produced you 1 MWC championship in the last 5 years, the off years you guys failed to deliver or choked.

"Better" won't get you anything this season.
re: Hey Amen | 1:02 p.m. June 1, 2009
Who beat BYU in the opening round of the MWC Baseball Tourney?????? Anyone?????

I guess losing to a team that finishes below .500 is even less to be proud about.
Re: 12:47 | 1:13 p.m. June 1, 2009
First of all, way to stereotype. I actually happen to think that Phil Steele is one of, if not the, most accurate preseason prognosticators in the biz. And I say that because of his year in and year out results.

Willfully ignorant? Tell that to the Gator nation who would refute any claim made by a yewt fan to a 2008-09 NC. You see, the reason I called it obscure is because it is not recognized by anyone but who they vote for. What is coveted in college football is this thing called a Consensus National Championship. As in the two polls that are consnsensually recognized as the two polls who choose the NC, and have chosen the NC for almost the last century.

But, just to clarify, I think it's a load of crap. I actually(yes, I am a Cougar fan) think Utah got ripped. There is no doubt they should have been in the so called NC game. I even enjoyed the Utes success last year. I just hope it makes a difference in getting us closer to a playoff in college football.
tghebdon | 1:16 p.m. June 1, 2009
We were out coached for the last three games. There teams knew exactly what the cougers were going to do and were waiting for the pass or run. We ran right into them and they on the other hand went right through us. It should be against the law at the Y for the players to read about themselves. They read about how good they are and feel that they don't need to go the extra mile to win. The Lord helps them who help themselves. Good Luck, and work hard.

"What are you trying to say here? That "better" stuff has produced you 1 MWC championship in the last 5 years"

DUMB!!! Just plain DUMB!!! The Utes have been MWC AND BCS Bowl Champions in 2004 and 2008 in the last 5 years. 1+1=2. The tdS has 2 MWC championships too. But NO BCS Bowl wins. Blue-Hooo!

The Utes went UNDEFEATED, and DOMINATED their BCS Bowl opponents. The 2 11-2 tdS teams dominated an overrated Oregon (7-6) team, and BARELY squeaked by, by a FINGER, to a team that would conclude their season at 6-7, in THEIR Championship years. IMPRESSIVE!

The Utes DOMINATED the tdS in OUR MWC Championship seasons. The tdS squeaked by, on MIRACLE plays, during THEIR MWC Championship seasons.

Offhand, I'd have to say OUR 2 MWC Championships > YOUR 2 MWC Championships. I think, offhand, while you won't ADMIT, IT.....YOU THINK THAT TOO!

Ha ha ha ha!

GO UTES!!!

While BYU was missing parctices down in Vegas and losing to a 5th place PAC 10 TEAM UTAH WAS WINNING THE SUGAR BOWL AND DONATING 75,000 DOLLARS NOT ONCE BUT TWICE ! SHOULD BYU EVER DO THE SAME I WOULD MAN UP AND THANK YOU FOR THE $$ , BUT THAT AIN'T ABOUT TO HAPPEN AS ALL THE COUGARS CAN WRITE IS CAT SCAT ABOUT 30 YEARS AGO. THE TURF IS FROM CALIFORNIA. What BYU needs is more loyal fans that remain true during ALL of the ups and downs. BYU has a more consistant football program than most teams in the entire nation.
-----------
What BYU needs is fans who live in reality. Beating weak WAC and MWC opponents year in and year out and then losing in bowl games against good teams does not make a national power house. And not UofA is not a good team.

----------------
Right, and the "fundamentals of our economy are strong". National respect in this era is earned by getting an BCS invite... so how many invites for BYU?

Hands down BYU was the better program in the 80's; I know I sat through one beat down after another.

BUT In this century BYU is as relevant as Auburn from past glory but unlike Auburn BYU hasn't finished undefeated or ranked top 2 since 1984.

BYU has beaten ONE ranked team since 1999 (TCU at home) while Utah beat 4 top 25 teams of which 2 were in the top 10 (TCU and Bama) in 2008.

ZERO just as many BCS bowl game wins by BYU. Come to reality BYU fan the 84 era is over; a non-BCS team winning or even getting a shot at the title game is OVER. BYU deserves respect for its 84 accomplishment but come on beating a 6-6 MI team in a title game and then having judges decide the champion is as impressive as Olympic figure skating results.

Re:7:53 | 9:24 a.m. June 2, 2009
Kind of like judges deciding who plays in a BCS game and votes a team #2. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Wake up yewt fans. We still get a NC decided by a bunch of voters. Until we have a playoff we will never get a true NC. BYU was fortunate in 84, and they had a good team. Utah was fortunate in 04 and 08 and had very good teams. All you can do is beat the teams on your schedule. BTW I would like to see you try and win an Olympic figure skating medal.
