New Turf? How about a football team with more grit and heart?

I'm a die-hard BYU fan, and while I was somewhat annoyed by my Utah Ute fan friends and co-workers rubbing their team's undefeated season in my face, I was even more disappointed by a BYU football team who seemed to play with the fire of a used up pipe.

18 straight | 5:47 a.m. May 30, 2009
To Clark and other fair-weather fans, I would say that 18 straight home victories is a pretty good record. Your Utah Ute fan friends and co-workers can't make such a claim.

BTW, Utah will be coming to the Lavell Edwards stadium this year.
Green Grass | 5:55 a.m. May 30, 2009
How many times will BYU blame the new grass for their poor execution and preparation this year?

BYU is 2 games into a 5 or 6 game losing streak. Thankfully we play Utah State in Provo this year.

Watered with Tears | 5:57 a.m. May 30, 2009
The new grass is being watered with all the tears of BYU fans from losing to the U and then again to that high school team in the Las Vegas Bowl.
It will take more than new Grass | 5:58 a.m. May 30, 2009
It will take more than new grass to help the cougars this year.
Quest for Perfection | 5:59 a.m. May 30, 2009
Anyone know where I can get one of those fancy T-shirts?
Blame the Grass | 6:00 a.m. May 30, 2009
That must be why BYU hasn't played well since 1984. I thought BYU always blamed the refs, not the grass.
Grass is Softer on the Back Side | 6:04 a.m. May 30, 2009
Too many players were complaining of injuries after getting knocked down on their grass.
New Grass | 6:05 a.m. May 30, 2009
At least this gives us something to talk about besides what a miserable football team we have this year and what a bunch of under-achievers we had last year.
1984 Grass | 6:11 a.m. May 30, 2009
Everybody remember when in 1984 that one player did a really long pass, and then the player caught it and ran really fast, and wow. That was a cool play. I wish it was still 1984. 25 years ago was a great time to be alive.
Get Ready Utes for our new Grass | 6:14 a.m. May 30, 2009
Get ready utes! Our new grass is ready for you. Try and beat us now on our home turf like you have the past few years! No more whooping us on our backsides on that old grass!! We are going to show you! Bronco is smiling at this new grass. You see, we will show you now!
Bury the Memories Under the Gras | 6:16 a.m. May 30, 2009
Under this new grass they buried all those bad memories of losing to the Utes.
UTE FAN!!! | 6:27 a.m. May 30, 2009
Getting a new turf????

You are just trying to KEEP UP with the football power house 35 miles up north from you. We get a new turf and so the Y thinks they need a new one tooooooooooooooo.

It won't make any difference in the out come of the game, we will still BEAT you!!!

GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MarkS | 6:30 a.m. May 30, 2009
Just wish the BYU marketing group had been creative and found a way to sell or give away the old sod to boosters. $10 for a square foot of the field at Cougar/LE Stadium would have brought a lot of interest, some cash to the program, and would have been a delight to many Cougar fans. Oh well, maybe they'll think of it in another 20+ years when the field is redone again...
Clark Kent | 6:31 a.m. May 30, 2009
What BYU needs is more loyal fans that remain true during ALL of the ups and downs. BYU has a more consistant football program than most teams in the entire nation, including most BCS schools and the red headed step brothers from up north.
Chris in Texas | 6:45 a.m. May 30, 2009
New grass means nothing without desire and drive. BYU needs more than new grass to win over the fans. They need a new heart, a new attitude. Where is, to put in Rocky venancular, the "eye of the tiger"? Win the MWC, a bowl game, and beat some nationally ranked teams, and then you'll see something better than just fresh green grass. I live in Texas now and I see more heart, grit, and drive in the average high school football team here than I do in the Cougars lately. Thanks, but if I want green grass, I'll go to the park.
Anonymous | 7:00 a.m. May 30, 2009
I hope it is at least 120-yards of verdant grass!
Amen | 7:03 a.m. May 30, 2009
BYU has lacked the heart to pull it off when it counts. Maybe we can learn something from the U. (See their football and baseball performance)
Clark? | 7:07 a.m. May 30, 2009
A die-hard BYU fan is committed to the core values of the program, not the W-L record. Get a clue.
New Turf | 7:15 a.m. May 30, 2009
Hey Bonco, its not the turf that wins games!
U gets New Turf so does the Y | 7:18 a.m. May 30, 2009
The U got new turf, and then BYU decided to do it too. Following the leader, the leader, the leader....

Unfortunately the U has red on their turf, so the BYU quarterback will have a hard time deciding where to throw it: either to the red jerseys or to the ground.
Dave Munden | 7:21 a.m. May 30, 2009
One of the most impressive things I first noted when I attended the Y was how well the grounds were maintained. The field at the stadium probably is seen my more people than any other part of the BYU facility. As such, it needs to be the shining jewel of BYU. Kudos to the effort that went into making this renovation possible both those doing the work and for all those that worked behind the scene to make it possible. As a Cougar football fan, here's hoping for many more victories and many great memories unfolding on the new turf.

He can smile now... | 7:31 a.m. May 30, 2009

but can he still smile in September? October? November?

Glad that California can help to make the field prettier for Cougars --but the team may be beyond help.

BYU FIELD | 7:43 a.m. May 30, 2009
Did you see the Utah field, that is first class. Come on you saw the pictures, the U new field is sharp
Top Ute | 7:56 a.m. May 30, 2009
Utah has better turf, better fans, better tailgating, better record in the Sugar Bowl, better record in the Fiestal Bowl, better coaching, better players, better... need I go on?
Franklin | 8:16 a.m. May 30, 2009
You'll play six home games in the entire season. What academic programs were sacrificed to support this outrageous cost?
Anonymous | 8:18 a.m. May 30, 2009
I know Roy Peterman. I would state that there is not a more dedicated, professional, knowledgeable person in the country watching over and nurturing a university's landscape, turf, trees, shrubs, etc. He is top notch. The stadium grass will be the best in the country knowing that Roy had a part in this work.
Bear Laker | 8:24 a.m. May 30, 2009
Ya, but look at the new turf!!!!!!
BONZO | 8:26 a.m. May 30, 2009
How do you know BYU didn't have fire in their game? Utah had a good team last year. Good for them! That doesn't mean BYU lacked fire in their game. Grow up dude!!
Utah County Observer | 8:36 a.m. May 30, 2009
A hallowed shrine? Really?

And since when is it a mark of honor to make sure the Spring Game is only played in the hallowed shrine. It is a game, not a religion. It is a sport venue, not a sacred edifice.
What??? | 8:38 a.m. May 30, 2009
What is the point?

I hear they're installing new toilets as well, where's the coverage on that?

Maybe we can hear the next time they repaint the press box.

Come one, homerism is fine, but is this over the top or what!
AJ | 8:43 a.m. May 30, 2009
Exactly! Can we please burn this new turf and go back to our 6, 5 and 4 win seasons. Thanks for your insights today Clark!
clark | 8:43 a.m. May 30, 2009
what? You should be reminding your yewt friends of the several thousand dollars the yewts have given us...If you have questions about the heart of the team you should see how the players have come together this spring
Re: Clark | 9:07 a.m. May 30, 2009
Name me a team that has won all of its home games since 2006 to present?! Only two other teams in the nation have longer home winning streaks than BYU: Boise State and Oklahoma.

Go Cougs! And quit complaining!
ALC | 9:21 a.m. May 30, 2009
Yeah, 11,11 and 10 win seasons, as well as 2 MWC titles the last three years shows we have no heart...Wow
Marky | 10:09 a.m. May 30, 2009
What's really funny is the fact that most of the posts on this article are from Ute "fans" (really just BYU haters). I just visited the SL Trib (home paper of the Utes) and found an article on UofU sports. One post. From a Ute fan. On this article, about GRASS, the Ute fans are going crazy. The infantile obsession of the Ute fans with all things BYU continues. They somehow believe that by denigrating the Y that the U somehow looks better. Pathetic.
Red Blood | 10:11 a.m. May 30, 2009
I'm a UTE fan who is happy to cheer for the Y - when they aren't playing us. But my fellow fans are embarassing my school. Stop posting stupid and arrogant remarks on articles about BYU. It lowers our class. Philadelphia fans are not held in high standards, and doing things like this is one of the reasons. Let BYU have their articles, and we'll have ours - then we'll duel it out on the field. Till then, shutup.
Ute Alum | 10:22 a.m. May 30, 2009
They have new grass at BYU? What? Wow? I always thought that coffee and alcohol were outlawed at the Y and now you tell me they have grass? This changes everything - Grass at BYU!
What did they do with the old grass, did they have big pep rally, burn it and invite everyone to come try it out but not to inhale?

Okay, ya ha ha. GO Utes
New Grass paid for by your big bowl wins.
Anonymous | 10:34 a.m. May 30, 2009
So very thoughtful of the U to give byu its old grass. Oh yes, I go to football games not to watch my team win but to make sure the core values are being upheld -ha ha, sure right.

Go Utah Go!
Real grass | 11:03 a.m. May 30, 2009
I'm so glad that artificial turf was never considered. It's great to have a local team that still wants to play on the real thing.
Howard S. | 11:13 a.m. May 30, 2009
All the new turf and first class facilities in the world will never get BYU invited to a BCS bowl game.

I seems that the BYU quality ON the field simply is not as good as the quality OF the field.
One thing never changes | 11:35 a.m. May 30, 2009
The average IQ of Ute fans is as low as and probably lower than that of any other team in the nation
BYU is above the BCS | 11:49 a.m. May 30, 2009
Howard S. (aka-BCS lover),

Who cares what you think, or who the BS system invites to anything! Especially when you are dead wrong about the quality of a program. BYU has been the best football program in the state of Utah for the last 30 years. They have finished in the top 25 for more than half of those years. So fact is, they are one of the best programs in the nation during that time. No one competed in a BCS bowl before BYU owned a National Championship. BYU is above the BCS!
Red Cal | 12:01 p.m. May 30, 2009
I am frustrated by some of the fans. Let BYU talk about their premier gardening (football) program. I hate to see so many Ute fans spending all of their energy tearing down BYU rather than building up Utah sports. Sometimes I think these are really BYU fans attacking their own team out of frustration. Whatever it is it makes us look like we have an inferiority complex that is not fair to the real fans!! When I talk to other Ute fans we rarely mention BYU.
Strange | 12:02 p.m. May 30, 2009
The sports news must be pretty bad when you get to the stage where your printing huge articles about the new grass in the stadium..
What's with these comments | 12:03 p.m. May 30, 2009
Thank you Red Blood. Too many trolls on here. But now I will only attribute stupid remarks to a vocal minority, instead of stereotyping a whole school over it.
I love BYU fans | 12:10 p.m. May 30, 2009
Anyone else ever notice that they only count recordssince the 70's when St. Lavell invented the forward pass?
Check out! | 12:11 p.m. May 30, 2009
Check out the difference in the number of comments about the BYU and Utah turf stories. Good or negative comments, BYU seems to always get more of the attention. Must suck to have an undefeated season and the Cougars still get most of the attention, even from UTE so-called fans.
Mr. Ute | 12:12 p.m. May 30, 2009
As a die hard Ute fan I'm jealous. It's hard but I must admit that with the new turf, not only will BYU have a better team and better coach, but probably a better field this year too.
RE 11:49 | 12:15 p.m. May 30, 2009
uh...nobody competed in the BCS for 15 years AFTER BYU had their championship too. The whole thing started because Michigan and Nebraska had a shared NC in 1997. Get a clue! The BCS WAS NOT made because of BYU, the ALLIANCE was. The BCS was made for a clear cut National Champion. So, it seems as though your "BYU is above the BCS" is only said to comfort your little broken heart because BYU hasn't been there...while your hated big brothers up north have...TWICE!!
