Wait a minute. Doesn't this law wipe out the arguments against undocumented Utah high school students getting in-state tuition?

Is it the color of their skin?

Why can't the same thing be done for those living in Oneida County and Franklin County in Idaho who would like to attend Utah State in Logan??

Because USU is a real school. It doesn't need gimmicks to increase enrollment.

How's that furlough gimmick going for a real school?
Dixie State is a REAL school! | 10:06 a.m. July 1, 2009
What a mormonic statement about USU being a "real" school (inferring that Dixie State isn't)! Logan and Aggie fans always complain about how the U. and BYU treat them and then some USU person looks down on Dixie State?! Newsflash... the south end of the St. George City limits is only less than a mile north of the Utah/Arizona line. It would only make sense that they allow those four neighboring counties to attend Dixie State. You will eat your words someday... St. George is already bigger than Logan and the college is projected to be larger than USU someday! Dixie State will be a UNIVERSITY in the near future! With nationally ranked programs, e.g., nursing, dental hygiene, etc., DIXIE STATE is only going to get better! Let's see... live in Logan in the cold polluted inversions going to school, or go to St. George and enjoy sunshine and blue skies?! You decide! There's Zion National Park nearby (rated the most visited national park this year in the country), skiing at Brian Head, Lake Powell, Snow Canyon State Park, Sand Hollow Reservoir, Pine Valley... yeah, you get the point!

@RE:Jane 8:12am
I was a student at USU when the State increased the amount of time to get in-state tuition. The following year, USU's out-of state students dropped by 85% and the next year the numbers kept going down. So in response to the loss, USU had to raise the tuition 23% to cover the lost monies, which BTW the state legislature said they passed the law so the state could increase revenues to avoid huge increased tuition rates. It didn't work and we (the USU students) had to cover the losses.
I think this legislation is just more red tape. They should have just repealed the original law the extended the requirements.

correction... slip of the fingers. "mormonic" was meant to be "moronic"... which then in turn makes me a moron too, but for other reasons! =)

if St George is going to be the major city in the region, it makes long-term economic sense to have the legal workforce from the surrounding area well educated.

Southern Utah is a great place, and Kudos to dixie for trying to better it. SUU is also growing and is a fine academic institution.

Not to be rude, but did this article have anything to do with SUU? Cedar City only has a university because former Gov. Leavitt is from Cedar and he appointed a bunch of Iron County buddies to be on the Utah State Board of Regents (the governing body over Utah Colleges and Universities). Cedar had an easy road, because of him, to change over from Southern Utah State College to SUU. Dixie State College of Utah is already as big as SUU and in an area with more shopping and things for students to do. I had a really good friend that went to both Dixie State and SUU and he said that he liked Dixie better and that the teachers were more approachable at Dixie. Just my 2 cents...
