Great game RSL! It's a shame more people didn't show up to support the team. It was one of the best games RSL has played in the four seasons I've watched. Let's keep the winning ways going strong in Utah by showing up in the droves for the April 11th game vs DC United!
PlunderMind | 12:15 a.m. April 3, 2009
The weather was actually quite good once the wind died down after the first few minutes...For those of us under cover the entire game was quite pleasant...And as for the soccer, an excellent game and a crucial win to help break the early season hoodoo that has surrounded this club. Schellotto didn't have much support but even so I think it was evident that he was deserving of the MVP last year and our respect...the man has skill...Fortunately for us Hejduk was not with the squad. Findley would have had a harder time getting around Frankie...
findley | 12:31 a.m. April 3, 2009
wow he looked amazing. Dominated columbus back line with his speed. Although one of his goals was pretty dang lucky

this was good football | 12:38 a.m. April 3, 2009
I think the mls is getting better.. With the economy being the way it is i didn't really expect to see very many people there. But man it was honestly the best game i have seen all year. Waaay better than the jazz games i've been to this year. And yes the jazz have many empty seats also. But will they fold? probably not. Will ReAl fold? Probably not. It's hard for the mls to get a lot of fans early in the year because of the nba, ncaa's ect. ect.
POINT IS
rsl is not going anywhere and we have a dang good team now.(well at least at home)

I wish i would have gone to the stadium for the game. Great rebound from the week before.

love it | 12:49 a.m. April 3, 2009
Findley is looking poised to get a showing with the national team. The best goal for me was findleys third off the cross from yura, perfect cross and a nicely placed header. These two are looking potent. If they can stay healthy we will be in the race of the supporters shield i think. Mathis is looking a lot better this year also. 12,000 fans is a little low for rsl but it was their first game, attendance will go up as the year goes on.

Just real quick let me give a shout out to the soccer haters who click on our stories and post on them making rsl get more coverage in the future!

will fail. I give this team one more year. people like this have been saying this for about 10 years now. GUESS WHAT?????? The league and rsl are still here. And ya we have an AMAZiNG TEAM. FINDLEY IS FINALLY LIVING UP to all the HYPE! New stadium is rockin.. Member that story about rsl achieving staying power last year in the DN?? I do and they know what their talkin about. Columbus? wow we destroyed you
Reasons I didn't go | 5:41 a.m. April 3, 2009
Weeknight. Had work at 6 a.m. the next day.
Mathis is still on the team doing nothing but shouting orders like he is captain and crying to the ref like he is captain when he isn't.
Tickets prices are too high.
Go RSL. This is the year to do it. Glad to see Robbie come out of his shell. The kid is amazing.
Re: reasons | 7:17 a.m. April 3, 2009
obviously your a woman who holds grudges to the day she will die. And you obviously didnt watch the game at all. Mathis isnt a workhorse like Johnson is but he definitely helps the team with his deft one touch and pinpoint passing.
Reasons I didn't go | 7:28 a.m. April 3, 2009
Soccer is boring. I would have more fun watching C-SPAN. I would have a better time staring at a clock for 3 hours. Here is a soccer game squeezed into a sentence: run around, run around, kick the ball, run around, tie!

RSL looked good on TV
nils | 7:30 a.m. April 3, 2009
Way to be!!! That was a highly entertaining match and the 12,000 that were there made it feel like a full house. We'll be there in Section 26 always supporting, no matter the weather.
Hey 6 a.m. Guy | 7:33 a.m. April 3, 2009
I had work at 530 and still made the game, and Mathis didn't look that bad, he hussled, his touch was a little off, but he hussled, so I wouldn't make judgement for someone and you didn't even go to the game.
funny story | 7:33 a.m. April 3, 2009
My family and I were all sick and couldn't attend last night, so I'm watching the game on rslfm (a web site that broadcasts the game stream). The guys that were posting in the chat room portion of the sight were disappointed at the turn-out for the game. So I write in and call them out saying that if their butt isn't in the seat they can't complain about the croud.
This guy posts back and sais "Uh, settle down dood, I'm in Portland! Not much of a chance I'll be able to make it."
I guess I forgot about the miracle of the world wide web.
Nice. | 7:38 a.m. April 3, 2009
Get off Mathis! Actually he played a very sound game. The control, and his vision to dump passes to the forwards is what we need, and he has it. I am very impressed to see that Findley played so well. Imagine he scored half of what he scored all last year! I am excited to see what more can happen with Salt Lake this year. Not just at home but on the road. I will see all of you great supporters April 11th!
Parking | 7:52 a.m. April 3, 2009
Somebody needs to figure out the parking situation. We had to park over a mile away and were forced to walk past hundreds of empty parking spaces at the convention center and Jordan Commons because they weren't letting anyone going to the game park there. I thought they had parking figured out!

Fun game, fun win, totally dominant. Way to go Robbie Findley!
Where's that Columbus fan from yesterday that said we have no chance? Hellloooo? (echo...) ..silence...
You got OWNED Columbus!

RSL can't fill their tax dollar eating stadium
Birdman | 8:15 a.m. April 3, 2009
At about 0 for 6, I'm waiting for Yura to make a good decision/touch in the box.

Great game. I sat on the fifth row and I think I would prefer being up higher. When the action was at our end, it was great, but I didn't get any perspective of ball position on the field when it went the other way. I liked the perspective of seeing the open field and passing opportunities from a higher view (as I was leaving in the last few minutes in the pouring rain). And I definitely would get a seat under the canopy. The fourth and fifth rows were getting pummeled with big drops of moisture as they dropped from the end of the over-hanging canopy.
Should have been 5 | 8:16 a.m. April 3, 2009
Yura, finish those chances buddy.

Findley, wow, can you keep up with those numbers? You're going to find you're a marked man, (which should open up Yura.

Grabavoy, and Alexandre again.

I was happy with the subbing by Jason. Findley did great, when you are up 4-1, no need to exhaust our weapon, put in a couple of defended minder players.

I would still like to see more of Cox. Although I think he likes to join the attack more, which is probably why we didnt see him last night.

Great work RSL.
Fed Up with ... | 8:31 a.m. April 3, 2009
tax whiners and soccer haters. To the tax whimps -- the stadium is there, get over it.

As for the crowd that just posts to bash soccer, consider this: soccer fans generally don't post just to bash baseball, basketball or football. Show a little courtesy, will ya?
Tickets and Seating | 8:43 a.m. April 3, 2009
To sit in the upper deck, it's cheaper. $15 a ticket. However, when you go to the website and try to buy these tickets, it says they are sold out. Well, as you could see from the game last night, there were tons of empty seats up there. Did that many people really buy tickets and just not show up? Why can't you purchase the upper deck seats on RSL's ticketing site...they aren't available for ANY of the games this year. Can someone please fill me in on this?

Great game last night! GO RSL!
Attendance | 8:48 a.m. April 3, 2009
People are saying Real will fold because of the low attendance last night. Let's think about 3 things before we start jumping to that concluseion: 1-The weather was bad, 2-the game was on a weeknight, and 3-the game was on ESPN2. with those factors, people who were on the fence about going probably decided to stay home. You'll see alot more people at next saturdays game. Wait to make judgements about attendance until then.
Tickets | 9:17 a.m. April 3, 2009
The reason that they told me that they dont sell the upper deck tickets(which i like because you can see everything, it is great, it is group of 20 or more, I know it is a lame reason. the only time you can get them is if you buy them the day of at the stadium
Hatless | 9:36 a.m. April 3, 2009
I told my friends I would throw my hat on the field if Findley made a hat trick. So, after his amazing 3rd goal I ran down as close as I could get to the field and threw my hat out there. It did make it on to the field, but barely. I didn't get my hat back, but it was totally worth it! This is just the beginning of what will be our best year yet! Gooooooo REAL SALT LAKE!
Glory | 9:59 a.m. April 3, 2009
Glory RSL!

I threw my friends hat on the field and now i need to buy him a new one. I will now bring a hat to each game.

By the way, there is plenty of parking. I park at a trax park and ride and it is very very close to the stadium.
Tut | 10:12 a.m. April 3, 2009
Awesome game! Nice hat trick by Findley. Great game by Mathis with 2 assists.
GO RSL! Disband the United!!!
RSL Ulty Fan | 10:27 a.m. April 3, 2009
Great game!!! Give it time for the fans, weeknights are usually not favorable for soccer games and when the Jazz play on T.V. I am glad I didn't waste my time watching the Jazz play last night. Go RSL. SOCCER FANS, PLEASE IGNORE THE SOCCER HATERS! Pretend like they never posted, they want your reaction.
RE: rsl | 12:57 a.m. April 3, 20 | 11:14 a.m. April 3, 2009
"I give this team one more year. people like this have been saying this for about 10 years now. GUESS WHAT?????? The league and rsl are still here"

10 Years???? People have been saying you were going to flop for 10 years. So if my math is correct, people have been saying that for 7 years longer than the team was founded. I get it.

I hope you hit 5 figures for average attendance year. Every year there has been a decline. Not to mention the majority of attendance are there for free. How many pay for a game?? 3 maybe 4 thousand.

Parking | 11:29 a.m. April 3, 2009
For Parking we paid $10 for a spot off of 9000 South which was empty walked 300 feet to the stadium, extremely easy to get out too.
One thing that really impressed me was the fact plenty of fans stuck around to the 90th min, even though we'd been iup 4-1 for 20 mins, and it rained heavily, that was pretty impressive, which always makes the walk back to the car in the rain not feel so bad
Crew Got Worked! | 11:29 a.m. April 3, 2009
Well done boys! We walked all over them.

Yura!...go practice active finishing! Findley...b-e-a-utiful header (for the hat trick)! And finally, Mathis...oh Mathis...How I hated you last year...how we chanted for you to leave the field...and how you actually got in shape and are contributing to the attack this year! Well done old man. I'll cheer for all solid performances from you from here on out (but don't get fat and lazy again, k?)!

On tickets...I buy sections of 20 seats in the upper deck for each game that I want to attend, then sell them to all my friends and coworkers. It works out well (Craigslist fills in the gaps that I can't sell). Try it out! Also stayed dry all game last night--great view of the field too.

On parking...Ride your bicycle (when it's warm enough) and park it right in front of the frickin' gate... OR ride TRAX. There really is no reason to try driving and parking on a game night. Park at a park'n ride, and take TRAX in.

Go RSL! All the way to the Cup!
Great Start | 12:25 p.m. April 3, 2009
I am soooo happy they are not playing at the U anymore. Great opening win now hopefully they can win some on the road this year.

RSL needs a mascot | 1:03 p.m. April 3, 2009
How about Sleepy the dwarf? It's perfect because soccer makes everyone sleepy, and the players are a bunch of skinny wimps.
J Crunch | 1:43 p.m. April 3, 2009
Great game! It was especially fun having Robbie come up to the crowd after the first goal right where my brother and I and our two sons were sitting on the 2nd row behind the north goal. Gotta admit, I definitely need to find a better place to park. We parked at Sandy City Hall and barely made it in time for kickoff. After the game it took us an hour to get back to the car. Too bad we couldn't have cleared that ball on the one goal they got. A 4-0 shutout would have been even sweeter. I'm looking forward to a dismantling of DC United on the 11th!
Time will tell | 1:45 p.m. April 3, 2009
People said that major league baseball would fail. People said the WBA would fail. Sometime they are right, sometime they are wrong. For the state of Utah that now has a big investment in this team let hope those predicting doom this time are wrong.
Four Goals!? | 2:20 p.m. April 3, 2009
Easy fellas, we needed those goals to be spread out throughout the whole season!

They emptiness of the stadium last night was pretty revealing about what is happening to soccer in America. Tic toc tic toc tic toc.
Poqui | 3:28 p.m. April 3, 2009
The game last night was awesome! You had to be there to feel the electricity in the air.

As far as fans attending the game, no need to despair. The team needs to average 11K fans to break even. Everything after that is profit. So, under the most adverse conditions (weeknight, awful weather, broadcast on TV) the team still manages to turn a profit.

It's a beautiful game!
Only need 11k? | 4:04 p.m. April 3, 2009

Nice return on investment | 4:14 p.m. April 3, 2009
Looks like the tax payer investment in a soccer stadium is sure paying off. Attendance for last night's home opener was down 42% from last year! Aren't home openers usually among the highest attended games? American football fans are happy to brave a little bad weather. Excuses, excuses, excuses for soccer.

Soccer is the greatest sport in America. Go watch your 4 hour football games. The crowd last night though small was awesome! I am proud to have been part of it.
Seattle Guy | 5:24 p.m. April 3, 2009
Great Game! I saw it on ESPN and it was more fun than watching the Jazz loose on the road AGAIN!
Empty seats? well it was freezin cold with a chance of snow. It should be warm by April!
Even Ute and BYU football games aren't full if its freezing.
Also, it was thirsday night, which in utah means 'school night'. Also, there seats (some season ticks) that were sold and paid for and didn't come. Also, the side of the stadium that is not seem on tv was more full.
