Let me put this in perspective to all of the Utah fans. Utah's football program has only been ranked 5 times in the program's history (only 4 times in the Coaches poll). BYU has been ranked 16 times in both polls, including 7 times before 1989 when the polls only ranked the Top 20.

BYU has been ranked at least twice every decade for the last 4 decades. This is the FIRST decade that Utah has been ranked more than once.

Good luck to BYU next year. Maybe they can improve their "impressive" win-loss record against ranked teams to 2-22.

We all know that BYU is going to get spanked by the ranked teams next year. They always do. 1-21 folks!

Setting record straight | 2:31 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
BYU is 2-20 against their last 22 ranked opponents, with wins at #14 Arizona State 13-10 in 1997 and at #22 TCU 31-17 in 2006.

During that stretch, BYU has played 11 teams that were ranked in the Top 10 in at least one poll, 5 undefeated teams, 5 one-loss teams, and 2 National Champions.

How many Top 10 teams has Utah played, let alone beaten, since 1997?

fyi, Utah had never beaten a Top 10 team until this year.

To: setting the record straight,

Which is more important, playing more ranked teams or winning more games against ranked teams? This is a no brainer.

Haven't you heard that BYU has only won 8 games against ranked teams? Utah has 4 wins against ranked teams this year alone.

Your argument is silly. You really believe that because BYU has played against more ranked teams it is more important than Utah winning more games against ranked teams? That is silly and I don't believe you really feel that way.
Utah Fan Stats | 2:49 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Why are Utah fans trying to brag about football on a basketball article? Do you have nothing else to talk about? Sad day. And why are some saying BYU has 8 wins against ranked opponents, and another saying only 1. Mmmmmmmmm....do your research.

Read the comments. BYU is 1-21 against ranked opponents in their last 22 games against ranked opponents.

BYU has only 8 all time wins against ranked opponents.

Pay attention.
Stupid! | 3:06 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Actually, Oregon State wasn't ranked when they played the U. If we're counting those, then we beat 1 ranked team 59-0 the week they fell out of the rankings (because of a bye week). You really should be looking at their rankings at the time of the game instead of their current rankings.

Now, can we get back to b-ball? I would love for Ute and Aggie (and Rebel) fans to go away so that actual fans can discuss the Cougs' success in private! Let's go Cougars! Kick some butt!
Re: Check yourself | 3:08 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
You count the win only at the time of playing. TCU wasn't top 10 when they played Utah. The stats are at the time of the game when recorded. Thanks for embarrasing yourself.
UNLV Fan | 3:22 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Love the posts! Especially about Austin Collie and Bronco stating that miracles will happen on the field and their Quest for Perfection.

BYU really is, at best, a mediocre team. I know the fans in Provo think BYU gets lots and lots of national respect, but the reality is the opposite. Most people outside of Utah lump BYU's basketball team together with Oral Robert's program. No national cred.

Correction. Actually, I just checked and it looks like Oral Roberts has had more success in the Tournament than BYU. Sorry Oral Roberts fans, I didn't mean to tarnish your reputation by lumping you together with BYU.
Re: UNLV Fan | 3:40 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Hahaha! This coming from a Rebel fan, whose team just lost to TCU? By all means let's avoid that all too current fact and dig up the past to prove some meaningless point!
careful unlv fan | 3:46 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
the last time your ranked rebels came to Provo, they were embarassed in a 30+ point beatdown.

I'm not quite sure how you feel it's ok to get involved in the comments here and go off on the Bronco and Collie quotes. As far as football goes we have been perfect against you guys for the last 4+ years. (In fact Bronco has never lost to the Rebels).

Basically you have nothing to talk about until you provide the Cougars with a 30 point blowout loss and beat us in football- then we can talk.

WOW... | 3:51 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Here is a perfectly good basketball article ruined by comments regarding football. The reality is that UNLV Fan needs to step down about all the "dominating the MWC" comments in hoops this year. You barely won at home against UNM, and TCU took you to school in Ft Worth. Domination is not a something you should be talking about.

BYU had double-digit leads in wins in both conference games to this point. We'll see what happens this weekend in the Pit.

"Which is more important, playing more ranked teams or winning more games against ranked teams?"

I'll counter that with, which is more important, beating ranked teams, or being a ranked team?

Before you answer, consider, unranked Stanford beat #1-ranked USC last season. Many, many more examples could be given, but just to cut to the chase, who had the better season last year, Stanford, Utah, or BYU?

So, which is more important, beating ranked teams, or being ranked?

Obviously, any fan with any brains would say it's better to finish the season ranked, than to beat a ranked team.

BYU - 16 Top 25 finishes
Utah - 4.5 Top 25 finishes

USU Grad | 7:07 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Let me clear the record, Utah has finished the season ranked for the following years which you have conveniently left out:

Year Coach
1926 Ike Armstrong
1928 Ike Armstrong
1929 Ike Armstrong
1930 Ike Armstrong
1931 Ike Armstrong
1932 Ike Armstrong
1933 Ike Armstrong
1940 Ike Armstrong
1941 Ike Armstrong
1942* Ike Armstrong
1947 Ike Armstrong
1948 Ike Armstrong
1951 Jack Curtice
1952 Jack Curtice
1953 Jack Curtice
1957 Jack Curtice
1964 Ray Nagel
1995 Ron McBride
1999 Ron McBride

As you can see, the Utes have finished the seaon ranked many more times than BYU. Leave it to the BYU fans to fudge the facts.

"Your argument is silly. You really believe that because BYU has played against more ranked teams it is more important than Utah winning more games against ranked teams? That is silly and I don't believe you really feel that way."
I think you missed the point entirely. Setting the Record Straight was simply saying that many of BYU's losses in football against ranked teams have come at the hands of very good football teams (e.g. top-ten teams).
Sunny South | 10:03 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
What I'd like to know is where is that loud mouth who was badmouthing the MWC and how no one in the MWC would begin to measure up to his mighty Rebels. Here it is Wednesday and UNLV has just lost it's second MWC game to Colorado State. They are now 1-2 in conference games and not looking so mighty. Mr. UNLV man has gone silent. Amazing isn't it. Too bad we didn't have a bet going.
Re: USU Grad | 10:34 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Don't know why a USU grad is even fighting for Utah, but those years you posted Utah was in the top 25, but they didn't finish in the top 25 polls. The years posted for rankings for both BYU and Utah are final polls. What's better, finishing in a poll or just being in it for the glory of one week? The years you posted are only years Utah was in a poll, but they didn't finish in the polls except for years 1964, 1994, 2003, 2004, and 2008. This is posted on the Utes website. Since I can't post links, just use a search engine to look for college football date warehouse. You'll find the date you need on any NCAA football team. Thanks for fudging the facts yourself.

Didn't WF just beat #2 NC at NC to move ahead up to #2?

I can live with that.

Ummmm it's not like they lost at home to a Div II college that went home and was given a ticker tape parade for beating one of the big teams.

(So many things sound so familiar about that last paragraph...)
Correction | 11:28 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
WF beat NC at Wake Forest, so it was a home game. But that doesn't matter, they beat the number 2 team in the nation. Everyone else they played away they destroyed. WF is a good team, and as a BYU fan I don't feel bad they are the ones that broke the home winning streak at BYU. At least it wasn't to a Division 2 team.
Ballerina Boy | 7:50 a.m. Jan. 15, 2009
I'm tired of the same old rivalry posts. Most of my life I've been practically addicted to BYU football and basketball. However, most of the "Yewt-Cewg" posts make me wish I were more interested in balet. Big brother/Little brother; TDS; BYU will never play in a BCS game/ The Utes will never win a national championship; 84 was the best team /2004&2008 were the best teams; BYU fans are fair weather/Utah fans are fair weather; RES is louder than LES/LES is louder than RES; BYU fans are self-righteous goodie-goodies and are the most obnoxious fans/The Utes are a bunch of immoral drunks and are the most obnoxious fans. It's almost enough to make one give up sports and embrace a pink tutu. (I suppose red or blue would work)
BYU,the Oral Roberts of the West | 8:59 a.m. Jan. 15, 2009
I just read the posts from yesterday. I can't believe that Austin Collie really said, "When we live right off the field, miracles will happen to us on the field."

Maybe BYU's coach should set goals (like the Quest for Perfection) with the team in private instead of announcing to the media.

Just a suggestion from a fan.
BYU Not Ranked Top 25 | 6:12 p.m. Jan. 15, 2009
BYU is very suspect up front against good teams. And TCU is not a good team. I was extremely unimpressed with the Cougar win at home. The Cougars won the 1st half, and the 'frogs' won the 2nd half. The MWC is not a good conference by any means. I almost regret changing from Dish Network satellite TV service to go DirecTV (they dropped KJZZ after we made the change.) This TV market is so convoluted with all these providers chasing their tails for miniscule business. It's so pathetic. BYU basketball is just entertainment...and believe me I'm a BYU fan 1st and last. It cracked me up when the Mountain TV commentators tried to get their camera operator to catch Jon Tavernari on his knees to his girlfriend for a proposal after the end of the game. That shows you their attitude about the game just concluded.....showing a proposal? Are you kidding me? So BYU fans....let's just enjoy the games, and don't expect anything really special to happen as far as postseason play, etc. The Cougars just don't have enough speed/bulk to handle the skilled players on the good teams...let alone the MWC teams contending for the conference title.
TC | 6:21 p.m. Jan. 16, 2009
Actually... my Dad can beat up your Dad.

Let's take care of this BYU/Utah issue on the court and football field each year. I've never seen a game won or lost on the blogs and comment sections.

You can analyze the heck out of each team trying to prove who is better. It doesn't really matter, even if you think you can prove one team is better than another... it's not alwayst the better team that wins the game. And as far as I can tell, winning is the only thing that anyone counts.

If you're a fan of one team or the other, go ahead and take credit for your accomplishments in the past(Utah - Sugar Bowl champs / BYU 1984 national champs) but they have little, if any, affect on what takes place on the court or turf in the next meeting.
