Hey Cougs good win but look at the Utes ranking they are ranked 21st!!! What are you ranked Cougs?
Eugene | 6:59 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Cougs are being dissed right now by the national rankings. They had the game stolen at ASU and outplayed Wake Forest until the last couple of minutes. Other than that they have been pretty much dominant at home and away.

What does it take to get some respect?

And as far as Joseph's posting, let's see how the Y-Ute showdown on January 27th in SLC comes down before talking smack. May be a good game, but I predict pain for the Uters.

Rankings don't mean anything at this point. We'll see who's better when the Utes play the Cougar. Save your trash talking for then.

Sagarin has BYU #9.

and Utah #42.

The only reason the Utes are ranked #21 in RPI is because, lucky for Utah, the RPI conveniently exludes their ugly home loss to SW Baptist.

Keep dreaming if you think the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee won't notice that home loss to a Division II team when it comes time to hand out dance cards to the Big Dance.

It always amazes me. BYU seems content to just be BYU but the U seems to have an overwhelming need to be the anti-BYU. Both are good athletic programs but BYU has a secure self-identity and the U has a need to compare itself to BYU. It's as if BYU actually shapes/runs both programs.
wow | 8:21 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I guess all this sugar bowl stuff has gone to the Utes head (like usual). Now they are trash talking BYU bball, when BYU is a clear much better team. This is the main reason I just can't root for Utah in anything. Their fans are so dillutional its kind of ridiculous.
Oh, and by the way...I graduated from Utah...just made me have even more lack of respect for them too...

None of this really matters, does it? BYU has not won a Tournament Game in almost 20 years. Until BYU wins at least one Tournamet Game, we shouldn't even be discussing the team.
Re: UNLV | 9:46 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Interesting how UNLV has won its only conference game by a bucket at home against UNM, and lost on the road to TCU. Since the season began there have been many posts suggesting UNLV's dominance in the MWC, etc...

It does not appear to me that UNLV is that dominant at all. And supposedly you have far superior athletes than the rest of the conference...except in venues of high altitude like TCU. Oh well, you can rest assured that as long as you play in Wayne Newton's back yard, you can eek out a win. Perhaps you can bring back Danny Tarkanian, Grand-ma-ma and the Plastic man to revive the magic.
Re USU | 9:58 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
People keep bringing up the whole "tournament game" issue. Is that truly what defines a team at this point? Last i checked BYU beat USU didn't they? So let's see, until BYU wins a game in the NCAA's the same lame excuses will be brought up right.

My guess is that even after they win one game, people will still say, "oh, they've only won one game in 21 years." The fact is BYU is 14-2, which is pretty good even for the Big West, or what ever conference USU is in...and they had won 50+ in a row at home...which is no easy feat. You're just mad cause they didn't play you at home.
re: USU Fan | 10:12 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Actually, it does matter that BYU is proving themselves to be the best team in the state this year.

The Cougars have already beaten Weber State and Utah State and have a MUCH better record than Utah, even with the Utes inflated RPI that doesn't factor in their pathetic loss to a division II team...

AT HOME!
Re: USU Fan | 10:17 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I love how USU fans come on here talking about BYU not winning tournament games... Last I checked USU won a tourney game was somewhere around 2000??? but before that it was in the 70's so USU fans really have NO room to talk, but thanks for the laugh
UNLV | 10:22 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
March is right around the corner. You know, the month that BYU can't win a game that counts. That month that your players are home watching basketball on TV instead of playing it. That month where if you don't have quick guards, you lose.
re re usu fan 10:17 | 10:30 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
until you stop worshiping your pseudo football national championship in i dont remember when then we can talk about your last time winning a tourney game.
re: UNLV | 10:31 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
"We will be ready for you."

excuses, excuses

If the Rebels can't beat the team that was picked to finish last in the conference, what chance do they think they have against the team that has won the last two regular season championships?

Wink played more minutes (36) against the Frogs than any other player, but still only scored 9 points on 3 of 11 shooting. If Wink isn't "ready to play", why is he logging such heavy minutes?
March is right around the corner | 10:33 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
and the Cougars will be ready; different year; different guards, with speed and quickness this year.
re: usu fan | 10:30 a.m. | 10:40 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
this is a basketball blog; if you want to talk football, wait until spring practice or at least find a football article.

No need to bring up the National Championship trophy with regards to Utah State; BYU has won 20 of the last 21 games vs. the Aggies, including the last 10.

True story:

The last time BYU won a Tourny game, my wife had just given birth to our first child. That child has just been accepted for fall enrollement at BYU.

I really hope BYU can win a Tourny game this year for my daughter's sake. She has never seen a Tourny victory from BYU.

Please, BYU, win one for the Gipper.
Re: Otis Spurlock | 10:58 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Am I experiencing Deja Vu or do you post the exact same thing on every article related to BYU basketball? I think we all get it, it's been a LONG time since BYU won a tourney game and they are way overdue.
Re: UNLV | 11:00 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Just curious...what has UNLV been seeded the past few ncaa tournaments? My hunch is that they got a 5 or 6 seed as a result of winning the MWC tournament, where BYU ended up in the dreaded 8-9 slot...or even lower. I don't know for sure, but that's my guess.

Hopefully, this year is different. Seems like the team as a whole is stronger and Tavenari, even though he launches from anywhere, appears to play a little more in control. We'll see what happens.
UNLV Fan | 11:12 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
To re:Otis Spurlock,

All BYU fans ever do is post the same thing over and over again about how BYU will fulfill the Quest for Perfection or how the basketball team will win in the Tournament this year.

None of that stuff ever happens, but all of you BYU fans still post the same stuff over and over again.
re: UNLV Fan | 11:12 a.m. | 11:30 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Prove it!

Cite me the most recent post by a BYU fan claiming that "BYU will fulfill the Quest for Perfection or ...will win in the Tournament this year."

the word "hope" does not translate to "definitely will happen"
re: UNLV Fan | 11:33 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
All UNLV fans (I suspect many of them are really Utah fans posing as UNLV fans) do is post the same thing over and over about how dominant the Rebels are, even when they're incapable of winning a conference championship that isn't played on their home court.
Re: Re: UNLV | 11:37 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
BYU's seeds since 2000 compared to other seeds of MWC teams...

2008 BYU seeded 8 against A&M, UNLV 8 against Kent St.
2007 BYU seeded 8 against Xavier, UNLV 7 against Ga Tech
2004 BYU seeded 12 against Syracuse, Utah 11 against BC
2003 BYU seeded 12 against UCONN, Utah 9 against Oregon, Colorado State 14 against Duke
2001 BYU seeded 12 against Cincinnati

Not sure what any of that means except that it's time for BYU to win a tourney game
Re: UNLV Fan | 11:45 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Prove to me that a genuine BYU fan (trolls don't count) has ever claimed that in a post. It's just not true and such claims by you and anyone else are only an attempt to paint BYU fans negatively and perpetuate the myth.
Theory | 11:44 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
All Ute fan, now USU fan AND UNLV fan does is post on BYU articles. Its a contagious epidemic that is becoming far-reaching.

We get it, BYU articles are the place to post and get your team respect and word of mouth advertising with the BYU fan base. I say, "Hi, how ya doing. I'll never be a Ute fan, nor a fan of any other team. I watch and pay for mostly BYU. Its my choice, my time, my money, but its good to see you here."

Theory 1. BYU does not win when it counts in the NCAA Tournament. (True.)

Theory 2. Utes deserve/don't deserve their RPI. (Don't deserve)

Theory 3. Ute football is better than BYU football. (Nah, but they had a great season. Both programs are on about the same level. Next year maybe its BYU with the victory and all Ute fans will point to this year, while BYU fans will point to 06,07,09.

Theory 4. Utes win their bowl games. (Yup, 8 in a row proves it)

Theory 5. Some fans are just jerks. Anonymity breeds the allowance of such. (just read these post as THAT cat is already out of the bag.)

Jessica | 12:03 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
To Theory,

How can you say that BYU's football program is better than the Utes?!

You are aware that BYU is 1-21 against ranked teams and have had a "difficult" time in bowl games.

In short, BYU can't compete nationally. Never could and never will. How else do you explain BYU's dismal record of 1-21 against ranked teams?
Re: Jessica | 12:15 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Theory didn't say BYU's football program is better than the Utes, I think he/she said they are on about the same level. And how does 1-21 against ranked teams have to do with BYU vs. Utah? I think if you look over the past 20 seasons head to head, he/she is about right in saying the 2 programs are about on the same level.
MWC | 12:14 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
When will the MWC Tournament be played in the Marriot Center. Really? Why does the rest of the conference fear a tournament at the Marriot Center? The tourney has been in Thomas and Mack for far too long. Is it because UNLV wouldn't win the tourney anywhere else?
Ranked Opponents | 12:33 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
"You are aware that BYU is 1-21 against ranked teams"

not even close; BYU has played over 70 games against ranked opponents; how many games against ranked opponents has Utah played?

just shows how clueless this spammed Ute post is
Inevitable | 12:40 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I suppose it's inevitable that every time Utah loses or BYU wins in men's basketball this season, Utah fans will resort to talking football smack to prove that their basketball team is still better than BYU's.

BYU fans should reply by bringing up men's volleyball smack, since the Utes are too intimidated to even sponsor a men's volleyball team since they know they'd be crushed every game.

Of course, the Utes will then respond with the Red Rocks or their ski team,...

all of which is pointless, since the topic is this season's men's basketball.
re: ranked opponents | 12:56 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Actually the utes have played quite a few ranked opponents over the last 20 years- it's just that most of them are named BYU.

Outside of BYU the last 20-30 years though the utes haven't played a whole lot of ranked teams though.
Reality | 1:11 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
While the BYU football team is 1-21 against ranked opponents in the last 22 games, the Utes are 4-0 this year against ranked opponents.

I really hope BYU can beat Oklahoma, then BYU's record will be 2-21 against ranked teams.

A 2-22 record against ranked teams would be a sweet victory for BYU.
To: Inevitable | 1:17 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
BYU really is 1-21 against ranked teams in the last 22 match-ups against ranked teams.

If you go back to the all time record against ranked teams, BYU's record is something like 7-52. Not much better.

Don't worry, BYU will have a chance against Oklahoma and Florida State to show the doubters that they can compete nationally. I for one predict that BYU will be 1-23 against ranked teams after the Florida State matchup.

BYU has done nothing to show me that it can compete nationally (besides 1 win out of the last 22 games against ranked opponents).
My2Cents | 1:26 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Actually, BYU's all time win-loss record against ranked teams is 8-63.

BYU should beat Oklahoma and clobber Florida State and Tulane next year. We will be ranked in the top 5 before conference play even starts. Guaranteed!!
The Shamwow Guy | 1:29 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I thought this article was about how BYU hasn't won a Tournament game in almost 20 years. When did it become about football?

We all know about how lousy the football team is against ranked opponents. Let's move on.

Let's move on to how lousy BYU's basketball team is in Tournament play.
Gary | 1:38 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
If the Aggies would have had Gary Wilkensen for the game the Cougs would have lost
The Shamwow Guy | 1:43 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Let the Shamwow Guy put this in perspective to all of the BYU fans. BYU's football program only has 8 wins against ranked teams in the program's history.

Utah has 4 wins against ranked teams this year alone.

Let me repeat this:

BYU has only 8 wins against ranked teams.

Utah has 4 wins against ranked teams this year alone.

Need I say more? I didn't think so.

Shamwow Guy must bid thee adieu.
Stay on target | 1:56 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
As Utah fans frequently accuse BYU fans, stop living in the past.

The article is about BYU's win over TCU, which makes BYU and SDSU the only two undefeated teams left in MWC play and BYU at 14-2 having the best record in the conference.

to Gary: if's and but's, and coulda's, shoulda's, woulda's are meaningless:

If Cummard hadn't had an off game, going 2 for 9 and scoring only 6 points, BYU would have blown out the Aggies...

see, two can play that game.

Get over it, the Aggies lost on a neutral court this season. You'll have to wait until next year to try to take bragging rights.
Re: Gary | 1:57 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Gary Wilkinson did play against the cougars. Why do people think he didn't? He and JT got into a little struggle with one another. Why do people say, "If we had this..." blah blah blah? He played, he was there, he made/missed shots. I was at the game Gary Wilkinson played against BYU. He was in my mission and we were pretty good friends, so I know who he is.

Both teams shot poorly, so it was whoever shot less poor that won. Utah State is a good team, but until you can score more than 20 points in a half at LA Tech, don't talk Utah State.
Basketball | 2:06 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
