Palin barely finished college after seven years of trying. In the same amount of time, Obama finished college, then Harvard Law school and led the Harvard Law Review. After that he became a US Senator on his own intelligence, motivation, energy, and other merits.
I think conservatism has gone from a philosophy of caution towards government to pure fear and ignorance, and fear of people who think, read, question, etc.

I wonder if we'd be getting all this "unfair!" and "persecuted!" talk if the woman in the general election had been Hillary Clinton. Now THERE'S someone, warts and all, who showed she could could take a hit.

". . . haters -- how do you feel about Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg? "

"-- since you know you can't win on issues, you resort to smarmy invective and ad hominem attack, to avoid having to advocate a losing position.
"Note that in none of the comments above is there a single mention of disagreement with a specific position Sarah took or advocated during the campaign.
That's because snotty, snooty personal attack has been substituted for actual substance in the liberal playbook."

In case you haven't noticed we won, YOU lost. I can cite several specific POSITIONS Sarah took or advocated during the campaign--divisiveness, hatred, lying and whining. Now can you PLEASE provide ANY specific ISSUES she ran on???

Regarding Caroline, she's already more qualified than Palin. Her resume is much thicker than "served on numerous boards" Palin's. Not to mention top-rated education and I do believe she passed the bar which your candidate can never ever be capable of doing. Do you honestly think that Palin could be the Governor anywhere else but Alaska? Why not check out the resumes and accomplishments of some other Governors before you make such idiotic statements?
RangerGordon | 11:11 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Since we're whining about the past, why don't we also think about the evil "geniuses" who unfairly portrayed John Kerry four years ago, and Al Gore eight years ago?

Looks like the "evil" liberals learned their lesson well. How do you like your payback?
Comparison | 11:15 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Let's compare Sarah Palin's credentials to Barack Obama's. Obama has a law degree from Harvard and several years' experience as an instructor of constitutional law. Obama has studied and understands the international issues facing the United States and has an appreciation for diplomacy as an alternative to costly/deadly shows of force. He also has a deep understanding of domestic issues. He understands the value of the scientific method and the importance of weighing all sides of an issue before making a decision.

It took Sarah Palin six years and five colleges to earn a bachelor's degree in journalism. In her service in Wasilla and Alaska, she has a record of 1) replacing competent people with less-qualified individuals (often cronies) who she felt would be unquestioningly loyal; 2) burning bridges with former allies when it's convenient; and 3) favoring right-wing mythology over sound science. At the time of her nomination, she was almost completely unaware of the domestic and international issues facing the United States. She knows nothing about diplomacy and only slightly more about bipartisanship.

Both candidates have held office long enough to know the mechanics of government. But only one had the requisite expertise for the position they sought.

The MSM by liberals, for liberals.

No surprise.
Wadsworth | 11:25 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I think many of the criticisms leveled at Sarah Palin in the comments are valid. Still she was and is a reasonably competant and popular Governor.

However, that attacks on her family by some of the media were vicious and unwarranted. In particular the assertion that she didn't bear her youngest child was vile and evil. Left wing commentators who pursued this idiotic lie, like Andrew Sullivan of the Atlantic, are the moral equivalent of serial child molesters. Anyone who thinks this was no big deal, is no better than Andrew Sullivan.
Lew Jeppson | 11:38 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Palin was the neoconservative pick. She was thoroughly vetted by that crowd, and she had all of the shortcomings of that bunch. That's why she became a net negative on the Republican ticket. Neoconservatism is losing steam fast and for that reason she was a poor choice tactically.
Comparison | 11:40 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Okay, now let's compare Sarah Palin and Caroline Kennedy. Kennedy is seeking to become the junior senator from New York. She has a law degree from Columbia and serves on the boards of directors of the Commission on Presidential Debates and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. For two years, she worked to raise funds for the New York City Department of Education. She is well aware of the national issues that are important to New Yorkers. While she has never held public office before, neither had Orrin Hatch or Bob Bennett before being elected to the Senate.

Palin was running for VP of the United States; she was the running mate of a 72-year-old with a history of cancer. Before her appointment, she was thoroughly clueless about national and international issues except as they involved the state of Alaska. Even after being briefed by strategists in McCain's campaign, Palin's lack of knowledge presented itself blaringly and often. As a former Alaskan (until Oct. 2008), I have few doubts about Palin's qualifications as governor. But her lack of knowledge about national issues rendered her unqualified for the VP job.
To Wadsworth@11:25 | 11:51 a.m. Jan. 14, 2009
"left wing commentrators who pursued this idiotc lie".

That's what they are and that's what they do. Vile and evil would also be accurate.

What do you suppose it is that those from the Far Right have such a difficult time moving ahead and getting on with their lives and would much rather "stay the course" even when America at large spoke quite loudly in November as to which direction they want to be headed in?
Ummmm... | 12:02 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
A far as mentioning Palin's positions, the original letter did not mention any of her positions or any reason to support her - it merely whined that she was being persecuted. The comments are in response to that letter and address the conception of persecution as put forth by the author.

Interestingly enough, those who state that Palin's issues are not being addressed did not bother to address those issues either.

At least one person did mention issues - namely fruit fly research.

My issues with Palin? Let's begin with lying about her involvement with the Bridge to Nowhere. Then we can move onto her flip-flopping on man's involvement in global warming/climate change. Next we can discuss her shopping habits. From there we can move onto her husband's involvement in Alaskan politics (in spite of the fact he was not elected) and his involvement with the separatist movement. And let's not leave out the basic issues of abortion, scientific research, and religion in government.

But none of those have any bearing with whether or not she was persecuted by the media - which was, again, the point of the letter.

Name Sarah Palin's credentials and her qualifications, really. What a sin it is to question someone's, who is going to be the leader of the free world, qulifications. Someone who has seen very little of the world, and seems to know even less. How very inconsiderate and selfish of those on the left. We should nominate her to be our queen, then we will no longer need elections, or even debate. Sarah "the all knowing" Palin will rule, and intelligence and rigteousness will regin down from the white house like mana from hevean. We will no longer have to debate, because that is a dirty trick used by liberals, to do what they call "making a rational descion", Sarah Palin will make our descions for us. What a fantastic world! I truly dream of the days when we will all once again good old fashioned witch fearing, commie hating, real americans.

By the way, it must be very shocking for the mindless drones who call themselves conservatives, to realize that when you start slinging mud and attacking people you can expect the same treatment back from the left.
Students become teachers | 12:07 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
As long as we are examining commentators who spew lie about candidates children, let's not forget the vile and evil lies propagated by the right-wingers in 2000 concerning John McCain's adopted child.

Where do you think the left-wingers learned their attack strategies?
Comparison | 12:24 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Finally, let's compare Sarah Palin and Joe Biden. Joe Biden has a law degree from Syracuse University and served in the United States Senate from 1972 to 2008, during which time he served on the Foreign Relations Committee and the Judiciary Committee, serving stints as chairman of each. Biden has decades of hands-on experience with national and international issues. Sarah Palin's experience on these issues is limited to a total of maybe a week or two of tutoring from McCain campaign officials. Biden's knowledge and experience makes him a valuable asset to the president and the nation. Palin's wouldn't. It was clear that the main reason Palin was named as McCain's running mate was to bring some excitement to a somewhat dull ticket. I have a lot of respect for John McCain, but this was a cheap political stunt in an attempt to score some votes at the expense of building a truly strong, viable team with the ability and expertise to tackle the issues facing America today.
Anne | 12:29 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
I usually vote Republican, but consider myself independent. I thought the choice of Sarah Palin as McCain's VP was a huge mistake in judgement. The fact that McCain overlooked many qualified candidates, including Joe Lieberman, made no sense at all. She simply wasn't and most likely never will be qualified.

That being said, I think it is sad when personal attacks are made on anyone, just because they are in the public eye. I think we often lack class and decorum as a society.

If nothing else, the Saga of Sarah should shed some light on the absurdity of the "Right is right" credo.
Obviously, America at large soundly rejected that foolish notion last November and voted for substance over ideology.
Dutch | 12:46 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Sarah was choosen to please the right wing religious right of the party no other reason - she fit that bill. The Republican figured that would slide the old man into the white house. What they did not figure on were long time stanch GOP'ers like myself saying enough was enough and voted the other way - We will have to see if that is the wrong choice but after eight years of what we had I willing to give Obama the a chance- 2012 lets get the country in order now and see what happens -
Willfully ignorant Sarah... | 12:53 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Palin has publicly stated that:

Dinosaurs and humans co-existed,

"Under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance by the Founding Fathers,

Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac were taken over by the gov't because "they were costing taxpayers too much money,"

That there are Supreme Court decisions other than Roe vs. Wade with which she disagrees - but when asked for examples she couldn't name a single one,

That she's an eager reader of many newspapers and magazines - but when asked to cite examples she couldn't name a single one,

That some parts of America are more "pro-American" than others,

That researching fruit fly genes is a waste of tax money.

PUH-LEEZ!!! There was no "persecution" of her!!

HER OWN WORDS reveal that the woman's a willfully ignorant, self-righteous nitwit who achieved whatever success she enjoys through beauty-queen looks, vacuous populist soundbites and a knack for ruthless, opportunistic political behaviors.

We should all thank our lucky stars that shes not going to be anywhere near the White House for at least the next few years.
Howie | 12:59 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
The media will always give liberal and democrat party candidates a pass. Joe Biden is probably one of the most inept politicians of our times and was ignored for most of the campaign even when he said really foolish things.

The mode of operation for the left is to character assassinate anyone who is a threat to their power, shout down anyone who disagrees with them and to try to question the IQ of anyone who would dare to point out why they view the world different than them.

After all they are the ones trying to blame one man (Pres. Bush) for everything wrong in the world from global warming to the sun coming up in the morning.
Re: @nilist | 1:10 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
While not ideal, that may be better than someone who has few core values and isn't intelligent, either.

I'm surprised that no one remarks on how extraordinarily disrespectful she was to John McCain, after he gave her a national stoplight. My only hope if they got elected was that Cindy would catch Sarah trying to poison or otherwise do in John and would show her the door.
Gus Talwynd | 1:18 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Mistreated?

Sounds like sour grapes considering the tactics which might have been used had she been a candidate with the opposition. Imagine Lee Atwater and Karl Rove applying their strategies of trash and burn.

Think of the plan the RNC had if Hillary Clinton had been nominated. Rove sincerely wanted Clinton because he considered her to be an easy target to attack. He wanted it so bad that he was salivating about the trash he would throw her way. His forte is the negative campaign; his is the desire to utterly destroy the opponent in mind and spirit.

Also, consider George W. Bush's campaign against Ann Richards for Governor of Texas. Nothing can compare to the Rove smear against her! Allegations of impropriety, innuendo, and outright lies. Texas-style politics, Yes! No need for anything like proof because since the news story is in the accusation.
Grover | 1:21 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Her "15 minutes" at the behest of John McCain are over. If she has a future in national politics, it will be on her own. Folks in this State though still have to come to grips with why Mitt drew only a yawn from all States save those with a significant LDS population? Why Sarah and not Mitt for VP? Something is going on here, but the local folks apparently do need "a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."

Sarah Palin panders to the farthest right of the Far-right.
And these poor souls are diminishing in number as we head towards a future of left-of-center.

Palin is the best thing to happen in politics in 30 years. She's the girl next door that we always hoped would get into politics. She was not beholden to any of the special interest groups, and she had the same politive values of most Americans.

I have read SO MANY negative comments about her that I have concluded that:
a) the women are all jealous of her good looks, and,
b)all of us secretly wish we could be her, (coming out of nowhere to center stage in politics) and,
c) Demos are VERY afraid of having to face her again, otherwise, why would they all be trying to convince us how BAD she was.

For somebody the lefties say was SO BAD they sure do spend a lot of time talking about her.

Looks like a little bit of jealousy and A LOT of fear if they have to go against her in another election.

If the McCaiin advisors hadn't have been so incompetent, they would have emphasized her strengths and the election would have been much closer!
Anonymous | 1:52 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
A lot of these Palin-for-President posts supports what Republican Colin Powell said about the general disarray of the GOP.
If the GOP is going to have anything to offer society they had better come up with a platform that has more substance than "We hate liberals!"

This is used so often by the far-right that it has become meaningless.
Hypocrisy | 1:56 p.m. Jan. 14, 2009
Donald, do you realize that no one has agreed with you yet?

Do you realize that you showed an incredible amount of ignorance with your letter?

Palin showed the majority of Americans through her interview and debate that she wasn't qualified. This is why America voted the way it did.

Get it through your thick head.

I am now convinced that if the Limbaughites had any brains they would truly be dangerous.
This poor chump is so ensconced in his anger and non-acceptance of what happened to the conservatives in the House and Senate and more recently, last November that he wants us to believe:
"For somebody the lefties say was SO BAD they sure do spend a lot of time talking about her" LOL!
It seems to me the author of this letter is the one who likes to talk about her. LOL! (only harder than before)

Biden was on "Meet the Press" something like 60 times over the past decades where he was grilled on his positions-----once Palin does the same, she will have equal footing. She is not a world leader, but I do admire her ability to bring small town persona to the big stage. She has a future; once her kids are raised, she'll do great things.

C.w.: Finally, somebody got it right! Women are so shallow that they are jealous of Palin's looks and dislike her for no other reason. How amazing that all women besides Sarah Palin are so shallow and ridiculous. How amazing that of all the approximate 75 BILLION women in America who are of an age to be VP candidates John McCain happened to pick the only non-shallow woman. And how sad and pathetic that the rest of us couldn't get past her looks enough to notice her stance on the issues and her qualifications to be VP.

Perhaps - being so able to see beyond her looks - you could advise us of the facts we missed?

Wow. This letter gets it backward. All Tina Fey had to do to achieve hilarity in several of those sketches is repeat ALMOST VERBATIM Palin's actual answers from actual interviews. Look it up. Palin was a parody all by herself. It merely required someone else to step into the role to point that out.

Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska for trips her children took with her, later amending expense reports to describe their travel as official state business.

I'm sure those children had a perfectly legitimate reason to be at that transportation infrastructure subcommittee meeting.

LOL!

You neocons must be kidding. The media in general was kind to this bozo.

Knowingly breaking ethics laws in trying to have an Alaska state trooper fired, Gov. Sarah Palin said her official report cleared her of unlawful or unethical activity.

In my opinion, breaking ethics laws and then publicly lying about it is what gives her that down-home regular-gal charm.

I just erased my disertation regarding Sarah Palin, so I will just say, "I hope she runs again or is appointed to an office. I would be so proud.
She loves her country, her state and more important, she loves her family, and from what I have observed, she is honest. What more could we ask for?"

I can tell you that this REPUBLICAN will not vote for her if she runs again. I was so disconcerted and embarrassed by her and her lack of knowledge that I looked elsewhere. For her to be anywhere near the education level that it would take for me to vote for her would take continuous tutoring from now until 2012. Too bad she has to run a state in the meantime.

We need to look somewhere else for our leaders.

That's it? Obama and Kennedy have law degrees?

Speaking as a practicing lawyer, I can tell you that some of the biggest idiots on God's green earth are lawyers.

Harvard grad? Columbia grad? Passed the bar?

To quote Shania, "that don't impress me much."

I can also truthfully say the 2 stupidest lawyers I ever met were both Harvard grads. I have no experience with a Columbia grad, but let me explain a little concept we (who are not lockstep liberal lemmings) like to call the bell curve:

In ANY population, regardless of where they went to college, or WHETHER they went to college, you're going to have a few that are real good, a few that are real bad, and most will be in the middle.

I understand this applies to Harvard, Columbia, and Idaho grads. It even applies to Ewts.

Tell me what Obama or Kennedy has done. Ever run a state -- or any organization? Ever had to run in an election against a real opponent? Ever had to deal with any level of adversity? Ever had to live in the real universe with the rest of us?

Nope, nope, nope, and nope.
