I was personally at the meets where Rick Morley set the 200 and 500 free. They were amazing then and 32 years later we're still talking about them. Dave Lundberg, Corey Killpack and Billy Neville made that meet special.

Good luck to Joe Buetler! Three decades plus is long enough for any record. Especially at altitude.

Dan, thanks for the the article on Joe. We who follow swimming get so little coverage of our great swimmers. We appreciate your work and hope the DesNews understands that there are many swim fans and we do read the articles about swimming.

Sounds like Joe is really poised for a great state meet. I, for one, will miss not seeing him and Jake go head to head. But if it really means a good shot at a state championship then he is doing the right thing. I hope Joe gets that 500 record as well. It would be incredible to see such a long standing record broken.

With all do respect what is Joe smoking?! Springville is going to bring it and we are going to cream Snow Canyon! Lets be clear about this. Murray is our biggest concern because they are a team deep enough to cause the concern. Snow Canyon is a one man team. If Joe could swim 6 events we might be concerned. Last time I checked the rules he can't!! See ya Snow Canyon and maybe you'll win a championship in college Joe! Ain't gunna happen on Springville's watch though!

For the record, this poster is clearly not a member of the SHS swim team or affiliated with them in anyway. We have a lot more class than that and certainly don't think we have anything wrapped up, let alone that SC isn't a threat.

I cheer any Utahn who is accomplished enough to gain admission to an Ivy League school. Joe obviously has his sights set much higher than most student athletes. Time will tell - this is the real story here.

I am on the SHS swim team, and I know that Joe and the rest of SC are going to be a huge threat to us. I really cannot say that there is much of a difference between the talent and ability of these two teams.

I agree completely.

Also, any student at an Ivy League school who has a good work ethic will find tremendous success. He is very smart to see what is truly important rather than being distracted by a school where athletics means everything.

How many athletes get injured in college and don't reach their potential?

He is set for life.

GO Channing Miller, the captain of the SHS Mens Swim team, 6 feet 4 inches of pure swimming power! He's going to shock the state this year and leave everyone in the pool thinking they just raced a speed boat. He's got a motor that never quits! Don't believe me? just ask anyone of his super-hot girlfriends. The only thing more impressive than his swimming prowess is his huge humility.

P.S. sorry channing but it's about time you got the recognition you deserve!

So too, I give kudos to Oliver Diamond, 6 feet 3 inches of intelligence, power, and pure, relentless talent. If this guy swam 12 months a year he'd be neck and neck with Jake Taylor. Yet he probably will anyway! He's still learning the craft but when he does... woooo doggie, that guy will set the pool afire! I know because I'm his friend Willis!

This article is about Joe Beutler, the Snow Canyon boys swim team, and mentions the potential race between Joe and Jake Taylor. Comments about anyone else, especially people most have ever heard of, are out of place.

Michael J, save your comments for a NEWS story about unappreciated athletes.

Diamond in the Rough, save yours for an article about the next 3A swimming sensation. You might have to wait awhile, there hasn't been one of those since the 70s.

There is tremendous talent on all of the 4-squads. It should be an exciting competition this year between Springville, Snow Canyon, Murray, and Mountain Crest. Joe is certainly a tremendous athlete but, Snow Canyon definitely is not a one man team. Don't count out senior Scott Morris who placed 3rd last year in the 100 Fly and 4th in the 100 Back. Michael Beutler placed 3rd in the 500 Free and 5th in the 200 Free. Look for Tyler Payton, Kyle Kirkeby, Henry Walton, and J.J. Jones to all score big this year as well.

Good luck to all of the swimmers from all of the squads! Here's hoping the state meet will be a great experience for all.

That was a hypocritical, if not altogether ignorant, post. There have been plenty of 3A sensations since the 70's--Erin Pabst, Ashley Smith, Liz Caravati, Joey Zone, Kelly McIntire are a few who come to mind--you are the one who needs to "get a clue". This is swimming, man! ANY story is a good story for this sport, any dialogue is good dialogue. So let's keep it comin'!

I have to disagree with you that this is a one topic board. When it comes to Utah High School Swimming there are no other alternative forums. And there is nothing in the DesNews instructions about not addressing other swim topics.

Besides why beat someone up who is merely supporting another athlete and not putting any other swimmer down?

Why don't we just support swimming in Utah and all of the athletes. And no I am not suggesting we all sing Kumbaya and just get along. I think good spirited debate, so long as it does not get personal and vindictive, is just fine on this board.

An article focused on a swimmer! The first one I've seen all year. Congrats Joe you deserve the recognition. Just a comment, I don't think Joe is going to take offense because someone else is mentioned on this blog. There are many swimmers at the top in their events who will not see one headline about them this year and they work hard in practice every day just like Joe does. So lets give them a break and if thier name pops up - kudos to them. Certainly Joe knows what it takes to get to the top in this sport!

And my 3A comment was talking about the 3A boys that the judge people are referring to. Look it up, of the 8 male swimming records, 5 are held by 4A swimmers and 3 are held by 3A swimmers from the 70s.

I reiterate my statement: "there hasn't been (a great 3A male swimmer) since the 70s."

You can't own state when you only swim two individual events. I do believe he will own the individual events he swims. I notice that he does own the fastest time in 6 of 8 events and the second fastest in the other two.

But then again, if Joe swims the 200 Free at state, who knows. It would be a great race.

What happened to the talk on these boards earlier that said "if Joe is swimming the IM, he should tell Jake so they can give us a great race."

From what I've read, Joe is pretty clear on what he is swimming.

If you click on the blogs icon under sports there is a good write up by Dan about the potential head to head race between Joe and Jake.

Here is hoping they go against each other, but Joe may end up swimming the IM as part of his team's overall points strategy at state.

Here's hoping Joe swims the 200 Free against Jake. Bound to be one of the best races ever. Next big question is besides the 200 Free what else will Jake swim.

Has anyone taken a look at the USA Utah Swim site? Jake set a record last year in the 200 Free--1:41.07. Compares well with the High School State record of 1:41.95 that Joe set last year.

Someone needs to talk to the two of them and persuade them both to swim the 200 Free. I believe they will both go sub 1:40 if they race against each other.

although i concur that a joe-jake race in the 2 free would be incredible to watch, the article said that Joe is just going to do whatever it takes for his team to win a championship. he won't be "persuaded" to do anything. he's going to do what he and his coach think will be best for the team and will put them in a position to win. this time for him, it's not just about individual success. it's about the bigger picture.

that being said, i would love to see them race too, but whatever Joe and Jake decide to do, it is going to be a ridiculously fast meet, and will be very exciting to watch.
