Miami wasn't really a contender for the national title in 1984, they were good but lost a couple of games that year including one to BC thanks to Doug Flutie's hail mary. I think that was Jimmy Johnson's first year there, the year before Miami won the national title beating Nebraska but Howard Schnellenberger was the coach.

Switzer at OU was making the biggest stink but OU and Brian Bozworth lost to Washington in the Orange Bowl. The Huskies lost once during the season, not sure to who (UCLA?).

Momentum was the Key | 7:44 a.m. Jan. 12, 2009
"Like the '84 Cougars, the '08 Utah team wasn't ranked in the preseason."

BYU was ranked #13 in the first AP poll, on Sep 4, and jumped to #8 on Sep 11.

The biggest reasons BYU won the 1984 National Championship was because of a series of great seasons starting in 1979 that gave BYU momentum and allowed them to start the 1984 season in the Top 15. They beat the #3 ranked team on the road in their first game and were ranked in the Top 10 by Week 2.

Utah had great momentum after 2003 and 2004, but they lost it with mediocre seasons in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Utah was ranked #22 in Week 1, Sep 2, but didn't crack the Top 10 until Week 9, Oct 26 at #10.

BYU
1979 11-1, AP #13 Coaches #12
1980 12-1, #12/#11
1981 11-2, #13/#11
1982 8-4, unranked
1983 11-1, #7/#7
1984 13-0, #1/#1 24-game winning streak
1985 11-3, #16/#17

Utah
2003 10-2, #21/#21
2004 12-0, #4/#5
2005 7-5, unranked
2006 8-5, unranked
2007 9-4, unranked
2008 13-0, #2/#4

Without the BCS, Utah would have been stuck playing 7-5 Arizona in the Las Vegas Bowl this year.

Dan Patrick summed up the '84 "National Championship" perfect:

When asked how he felt about being able to watch the Florida and Oklahoma game BCS National Championship game in a suite with Erin Andrews and her hot sister, Dan replied: "I felt like BYU in 1984, I felt like Ronnie Bosco, I won the National Championship....I just didn't earn it"

National respect for BYU?.......I think not.

From hour 2 of The Dan Patrick Show....

When asked how Dan felt about being able to watch the BCS National Championship game with Erin Andrews and her hot sister:

Commentator: By the way, the BCS just re-voted and youre the big winner.
DP: Yaaaaaaaaay!!!!!
DP: I feel like um, I feel like Utah, I mean I feel like I had an undefeated season.
Commentator: Youre like BYU in the 80s
DP: Yes! Im Robbie Bosco, I won a national title.I may not have earned it, but ya.

In the final (after bowl games) BCS computer rankings Utah was #1 in four out of the six.

Utah was #1

Watched all three teams. All were exactly that "teams". Well coached, the team performance far exceeding the individual summed talent. None of those Utah or BYU teams produced the NFL players recongnized as great.

Which team had the more significant impact on CFB - BYU in 1984, considering how their championship ultimately resulted in the BCS.

Which one was the best football team - my vote is this years Ute team considering the relative MWC strength in 2008 and their defeat of Alabama, however recognizing a favorable home schedule and an little luck both at home and on the road certainly helped.

For my part I have certainly enjoyed the Utes in 2004 and now in 2008, and how well they represented the MWC. But just as well, I remember appreciating the BYU teams of 1980 and 1984 and how they also represented the state of Utah and the WAC.

I had hoped both Utah and BYU would end up undefeated on the 22nd, and hope for that in the future as great for both schools and the MWC.

BYU won the National Championship in 1984 for 2 reasons - they finished the regular season ranked #1, and they won their bowl game. In fact, that is a fool proof method for winning the National Championship that has never failed. The challenge, whether from a BCS conference or not, is to finish the regular season ranked #1 or #2. Look at history to see how BYU did it and why Utah has come up a little short both times. For BYU, There were multiple factors extending over several seasons as well as success of alumni quarterbacks in the NFL that forged a sufficient National reputation in a year everyone else had loses.
Nostradamus | 12:59 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
Who does know?...that's why they play the game (well, at least they should play the game). However, as we look at recent history and the horribly deficient BCS system, which team has ranked higher? I am pretty sure (sorry, I don't want to waste my time looking it up) that BYU has never ranked #4 in the BCS at the end of a season. So unfortunately, the BCS is the current ranking system. Also, in 2008/2009 (the time that really matters) it is clear the Utes are better. That's good enough for me!
Although... | 1:18 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
They had "1" loss, however the 1996 BYU team is the BEST ever from this state and would have beat the likes of the utah 04 and 08 teams.
Best team ever from Utah... | 1:34 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
1996 BYU Cougars. Finished with a 14-1 Record with the only loss @ a very good Washington Husky team. Wins over a good Texas A&M, and a great Kansas State team as well as dominating the conference. That is the best ever BYU team and would fair very well against any Utah team.
Top 10... | 1:42 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
BYU four times, Utah twice. Both of Utah's finish required undefeated seasons. BYU finished #1 it's only unbeaten year, #5 and #7 with one loss, and #10 with 3 losses once (1994 coaches). It's pretty clear who gets more national respect. If BYU ran the table this year and had beaten Alabama, they would be AP #1.
John | 1:54 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
In 1984, BYU did not beat a single team that finished the season in the Top 25. The had a top 15 preseason ranking and beat the #3 preseason ranked Pitt. team that finished 3W - 9L. They then went on to beat a bunch of average and below average teams.

It was the perfect storm and good ole Barry Switzer upset a bunch of voters and others to aid BYU.

Then comes the BCS (developed to prevent this from happening again)....I will never respect or accept the "1984 National Championship".
BCS H8R | 2:20 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
BCS is plain unfair.
The only teams with a legit chance of winning the national championship come from 6 conferences.
Each conference has a few teams that dominate.
This makes it so only a handful of teams have a chance at the national title.
This was shown most clearly this year. Utah routed Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and finished 13-0. Florida, the winner of the BCS national championship game, finished with a record of 13-1.
In a fair system, Utah walks away with a national title. In today's system, Florida is credited with the title.
The BCS is obviously stacked in favor of its conferences. One BCS bowl game is worth as much as all the non-BCS bowl games combined. This money is intentionally being withheld from the non-BCS teams.
We need to take the time to consider the fairness of the BCS. If you find it unfair, act.
Utah is the national champion.
GO UTES!
Jay | 4:22 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
Ha Ha Ha. Must suck being a Ute fan and knowing that even going undefeated cannot get you a National Title like Big Brother BYU! The system in 1984 was-get the most votes, win the Title. BYU did it by going undefeated. The system today is win the BCS title game-win a National Title. FLORIDA did it-Not UTAH! The AP Poll means ZERO these days. Not a part of the overriding factor- The BCS! Those 16 AP voters don't really believe Utah was the best team in the country, they were trying to make a point. So Ute fans, enjoy your "We're #4!" parade on Friday and get ready for an 8 win season!

Re: Jay
You are an idiot. How can you possibly think it sucks to be a Ute fan? Do you not see the awesome opportunity of celebrating major BCS victories? Do you not see the awesome opportunity of celebrating TWO recent undefeated seasons?

Do you not see the opportunity of living in the present, rather than clinging to the 80's for greatness?

Go UTES!!!
Here is how you get respect | 6:27 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
In my lifetime of 34 years, BYU has 23 conference titles. Utah has what 4? Oh, and who cares if Ute fans "never respect or accept" the 1984 national title. It's still in the books and is a national title every bit as much as any title ever voted on. Oh and I might remind you that the team that finished #2 in 1984, Washington (who beat Oklahoma) got crushed 31-3 by BYU the next year with most of their players back, essentially proving that BYU was the best team of 1984. Ute fans and their inferiority complexes rushing in to compare their mythical #2 team to BYU's "mythical" #1 team. Until there is a playoff it's all "mythical".
Re: BYU fans | 7:25 p.m. Jan. 12, 2009
Come on guys. We got to stop mentioning the National Championship trophy that we won back in 84. It's making the Ute fans feel bad.

In regards to the National Championship in 1984 - there were so many factors throughtout the season which we tend to forget about, including Washington cowardly bowing out of "the game." Those who voted BYU National Champs back then did so with MUCH thought and consideration of the MANY surrounding factors. These were the "people" who "knew" what was up back then!!!!

So, YES, BYU was a legitimate National Champ; a legitimate #1 - forever and always! Go Cougs!
interesting | 8:57 a.m. Jan. 13, 2009
i'll be the first to send out congrats to utah for what they've done. they played some good ball this year, had some breaks go their way, but did what they had to do to win.
on the other hand they recieved one first place vote, cast by their own coach kyle whittingham. in 1984 byu went undefeated and recieved more first place votes than any other team! byu didn't vote themselves number one all by themselves! the country can complain all they want now but in 84 it was the country, the coaches and the media that voted the cougars number one. whats done is done.
6-5 Michigan reason for title? | 10:53 a.m. Jan. 13, 2009
Just to be clear...BYU did not win a national championship or get voted number one for beating a 6-4 Michigan team. They were originally voted #1 in the 12th poll of the year after beating Utah. They followed that up with 2 more wins (including Michigan in the Holiday on 12/21). They won the national championship because they went undefeated and impressed more writers and coaches with their performance than any other team that year. Along the way they extended to a 24 game winning streak, beat a team that was ranked #1 (Pitt) at the time they played them and yes played some gritty close games that they won (5 turnovers to Utah, defensive struggle with Hawaii and good old fashioned WAC shootout with Wyoming).

Something else to consider about history. Not many of you even remember that the Bowl Alliance/BCS was created because of 1984 or that standards for busters was lowered 2 different times because of BYU (1996/2001) which allowed Utah to get in their two times. If people don't remember those things what makes many of you think people will remember 04/08 when it isn't permanently listed as something important/significant like a national championship.

BCS Rankings

BYU
1999-14 (highest)
2001-12 (Final/highest)
2006-20 (Final/highest)
2007-17 (Final/highest)
2008-15 (highest)

Utah
2003-22 (Final/highest)
2004-6 (Final/highest)
2008-6 (Final/highest)

BCS has existed for 10 seasons now. BYU has been ranked in 5. Utah 3. Two really good season's for Utah in those 10 years. Three/four really bad years during that time for BYU (the darkest in over 30 years). Yet BYU was still more represented in those rankings over that time. These are the differences between great teams (which the article is about) and great programs. Great teams do have fabulous seasons when they are senior led/dominated. Great programs win year in and year out and are consistently competing for championships/national attention.

BYU had a great team in 1984. But BYU has been a great program for 30+ years. Utah has had 2 really great teams and a very good team (2003) but their mediocrity for the 20+ years before these recent cyclical/isolated runs (followed by more mediocrity) still apparently eats at them especially when they consider that what usually comes next is more mediocrity.

BYU has been ranked in final polls 15 times and Utah 4 in the last 31 years. Which is the better program?
Re: John | 1:54 p.m. Jan. 12, 20 | 12:09 p.m. Jan. 13, 2009
"In 1984, BYU did not beat a single team that finished the season in the Top 25."

In 1984 the polls only ranked the top 20.

"The[y] had a top 15 preseason ranking"

Following this game, which was televised live on ESPN, BYU moved into the wire service rankings for the first time: 12th in UPI and 11th in AP, while Pitt fell to 17th and 20th, respectively. BYU is now 1-0. - Source:1985 BYU media guide

We don't need you to accept the 1984 championship it wasn't yours to accept - it wasn't awarded to you. BYU did accepted it though - the trophy, the banner, and the permanent place in the record books.

BYU Haters | 12:20 p.m. Jan. 13, 2009
I recall BYU Haters back in October telling Cougar fans that we lost our game to Utah St 14-10 in the last 3 quarters and because of that we were losers.

Did anyone notice that Utah actually lost their last 3 quarters to Alabama 17-10?

Sound retarded?

That's certainly what I thought when Ute fans posted it on almost every board back in October . . .

"on the other hand they recieved one first place vote, cast by their own coach kyle whittingham. in 1984 byu went undefeated and recieved more first place votes than any other team!"

Before you make such comments about voting, you should know the facts. The coaches poll requires that all their voters vote the winner of the BCS Championship as #1. Coach Whittingham went against the rules (possibly will lose his voting right) to vote for his players and what they accomplished.
Everyone talks about how irrelevant the AP Poll is these days, which is certainly could be, since they chose to no longer be associated with the BSC, but how meaningful is a poll that tells their voters how to vote. All the coaches may have wanted to vote for Florida, but once again we will never know because of the "system" As far as I know the AP and Harris Polls have no such rules.

That 4-8 New Mexico team the 2008 Utes beat, beat Las Vegas Bowl champion Arizona earlier that year. Arizona went 1-1 against the MWC; beating only the tdS. New Mexico also had the strongest SOS in the conference, so they couldn't have been THAT bad. They were certainly better than their record indicated.

Both Utah and BYU have had some really great teams. It amazes me how much hair splitting is going on in here with which team is best or worst. I like the 2004 for Utes because they could score like mad but I still love the 2008 Utes because they weren't expected to produce like they did to end up #2. The most overlooked BYU team of all time is 11-3 the 1985 squad.

BYU fans' time machine only goes back to 1973. Utah fans' time machine jumps all over the place. At the end of the day I feel like I am on the playground again hearing: "My dad can beat up your dad".

I think you said it best, great fans love their team because it is their team. I am sure that SDSU fans love their team, even when they lose. That is what makes them fans.
Utah won the batle with BYU this year and won their bowl game, BYU came up short, which is the biggest mark on their season. Losing to TCU and then to Utah (a game that was much closer than the final score indicates) shouldn't hurt so much, because TCU went on to beat BSU in their bowl and Utah beat Alabama. By association, their only regular season losses were to Top 7 teams. But the loss to UofA is a stinger. Had BYU beaten UofA they would have finished around 15, but losing to a mid-level PAC team that they should have beaten hurt alot.
BYU needs to win their bowl games, every year. It is like finally getting the cake and then throwing it away.
Congrats Utah! The season is over, let's see how you like coming to Provo this year.
Re: John | 3:38 a.m. Jan. 15, 2009
You don't have to respect it or accept it... we don't even care what you think!

They were voted to it, this is what everybody keeps forgetting... if no one thought they deserved it for beating Michigan, why did they vote for them? How did they get enough votes in a national poll to end up No. 1? Because the majority of the voters thought that their season, their determination, and their quality was demonstrated by going undefeated. They were and still are the No. 1 team, and the closest thing to a NC (as someone else pointed out, there is no Div1 NC) that the state of Utah has every come.
And honestly Utah, you need BYU and you would not be BCS buster were it not for BYU!
BYU fan for Utah | 7:45 a.m. Jan. 15, 2009
As a BYU fan, I am convinced that the University of Utah is one extremely good outstanding team.
They took on hard teams and manhandled them. Anyone that cannot admit that is too prejudiced to think straight. Congratulations Utes. You deserve to be at the very top.
John | 1:43 p.m. Jan. 15, 2009
So BYU is a National Power.....In their "storied" history (30 years)....they have only beaten two teams that finished the season in the top 10. Utah did it twice this year. They have a very strong losing record against the SEC. I think it's 1W and 6 Loses.

Not a National Power....never been one.

BTW...I'm not a Utah fan...I'm a real college football fan and Utah had a very strong team this year. In 1984, BYU beat nobody.

For the idiot that says....in 1984 Washington elected to not play BYU in the Holiday bowl...Duh...the Holiday Bowl was under contract with the WAC (first place team), and Big Ten (Forth Place Team). Also....Washington recieved 10 time the cash for going to a real (New Years Day) bowl.

Then to say....well be beat them the next year...come on...that was the next year...different teams on both sides. How did Washington do that year....guess what...they did not finish in the top ten.

Sorry Folks | 5:22 a.m. Jan. 17, 2009
Know what, the many arguments we have heard about this year's Utah team are very familiar. They are a repeat of 1984. So to all you people who use to bad mouth 1984, thank you for validating the great season BYU had that year. 2004 and 2008 were good but 1984 produced a #1 vote in both polls, by a huge margin. Utah had a wonderful year, but they only got 16 votes in the AP poll and very few if any in the USATODAY/ESPN.

You bad mouth Michigan. Maybe you should bad mouth forcing TCU to travel 1500 miles and play a short week game in SLC. You need to remember that a overthrown passes to open receivers, one wide open, saved the game for Utah. Utah's defense failed on those two plays but the TCU QB let them off the hook. Ditto, for the OSU game, short week, a couple of really bad coaching decisions, not the Utah defense changed that game.

Sorry, but the trophies are in Provo. Great year Utah, but your MVP is your schedule. Just ask TCU and OSU. This is the anti-BCS year and the Utes are the receipients. Good year!!
Ute Man | 10:30 a.m. Jan. 17, 2009
Hey Zoobs, nobody outside Utah respects your '84 Championship! Evidenced by the "Bo Diddley Tech" label the media slapped on you guys! The media talked for days after, about how the system was broken and what needed to be done to fix it, so that weak teams like your '84 team couldn't "steal" championships!

Fast forward to '08-'09, the media is talking about how the system needs to be fixed again! Only this time they are talking about what can be done to give legitimate teams like Utah a shot at the national title! The national media, for the most part, is on our side, they too, would've liked to see a Florida vs. Utah or USC vs. Utah matchup, because they know this Utah team would be competitive!

It truly must be embarrassing to be a Zoob, and have your championship ridiculed by the national media every chance they get.

I think you deserved your title! I'm proud you won one! I'm happy for Coach Edwards, who IMO, was a true legend!

But, to compare your '84 team with the Ute '04 or '08 teams, there is no argument, the 2 Ute teams were better!
It's over | 9:42 a.m. Jan. 18, 2009
The Utes had a great season. The real problem is that no matter what they do they still have the idea that they are always going to be #2 in this state. If there was a playoff this I suspect that the Utes could have made a run and done themselves proud or they could have lost in the first round. We'll never know. Until the fans and players for that matter stop worrying so much about BYU and start worrying about them selves they may never get rid of the inferiority complex that holds them back. BYU will always be #1 in the State of Utah!
