If the MWC | 2:54 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Picked up BSU and Fresno and dumped Wyoming and SDSU then within 10 yrs the MWC would be as competitive as any conference in the nation. Then we could finally get some respect and love.

I don't think Utah Should be the National Champions, Just have a shot at it. I also think the BCS is better than before, however, the true issue here is the automatic bid. Give the MWC an automatic bid, or maybe the best non-BCS team gets an automatic bid. Maybe it's an 11-1 team some years but they should get equal shot at playing in the big bowls, this will give their conferences and schools the money to keep their coaching staff and keep their programs competitive. Let them play more football. I Love the Utes, so I am biased. I will say ok, the Gators are Champions, but I was hoping the vote would be within 4 or 5 so that the need for adjustments to the system would be far more apparent. I still think that USC, Florida, Utah, Oklahoma, Texas, Penn State, Any other 1 loss team should have had an equal chance to earn the Championship, that's all fans want.
Reality | 3:20 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
It's all a beauty pageant anyway. The Utes had a perfect season, but didn't have the fashion. "FBS" College Football National Championships, AP and BC$, are a joke so don't get too offended if you weren't crowned the "National Champs" because it really doesn't mean anything. Until the "National Championship" is determined by a teams record or playoff, it really has no merit.

Congrats on the Mountain West Conference Championship and an undefeated season, Utes.
ws | 3:23 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
every utah fan that thinks there team should be the champs should consider this: you played teams no where near the quality of the teams that OU and Florida play and if you were in one of those conference's you would have lost 2 or 3 for example you only beat tcu by three at home and it took two missed feild goals to get you that win. and OU killed them by 28 plus. And the utes other so called good wins were against a overrated BYU team and a good OSU beavers with one lucky win over the true best team USC. And Florida plays a SEC schedule so no more is need to be said, So if you want a shot at the Title go out and Schedule some good teams like BYU did next until then stop complaining

Utah had MICHIGAN on the road, they didn't know when they scheduled the games how bad Mich. would be.

How many times do you hear these uneducated fools saying stuff like "lets see Utah play in Alabama's conference and go undefeated..."
I heard the same before Utah played Alabama, with a little more seriousness "When Utah plays Alabama, they'll get their arses handed to them cuz Alabama's in the SEC and has tradition"

Well guess what, Utah handed Alabama their arses (I'm trying to be family friendly)

Utah probably would have gone undefeated in Alabama's conference. In fact, Utah is asking those exact same teams to come play them, but they are too afraid. So it isn't a question of whether Utah would or would not. It is a question of whether these BCS schools will ever get the guts to actually play Utah.

The Utes should take it as a complement though. It is undoubtedly their prejudiced way of saying... "we're better than you, but don't believe we can beat Utah, so we won't play you. We'll just talk a lot and run our mouths in hopes of deceiving voters. After all, public opinion is 100x more important in college football than skill, talent, and teamwork. Just ask Urban Meyer who's been on both sides"
Chloe Judkins | 3:52 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Doug, I normally agree with your logic and like your articles. But, let's be honest with ourselves. Does this Utah team go undefeated in the SEC? Of course not. They can't match the strength, athleticism, and DEPTH of the teams in the SEC week in and week out. Sure they can win once in a while against the big boys, after weeks of preparation. But, put them in a conference w/o Wyoming, SDSU, & Weber State on their schedule, and they go 9-4.

Sure, they can prepare for a big game (Whit is one of the best coaches in the nation for this) and beat the big boys occasionally. But not each week. All things worked out for them this year. They were healthy. (Just look at last year as an example of their lack of depth. They lost a few starters and tanked in their first few games.) Last year, if they'd been playing in the SEC, they don't even go to a bowl game. This year they go 9-4 in the SEC.

One good game, winning against a favored opponent, does not a national champion make.
Dean | 3:54 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utah has a good team, but coming from the Gainsville area and watching for many years the Gators beat up opponents, it would be a stretch to say that the UTES could beat the Gators. Alabama was not playing up to their normal level the last 3 or 4 weeks of the season and the Gators only got better. Utah did an excellent job of destroying the Tide, but the Sooners, Gators, LSU, and others on that level are in an entirely different world. It would be nice to see the UTES play an SEC schedule for half a year jsut to see what kind on team they really are.
Unbelivable!! | 4:06 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
There is know way UTAH should not be NATIONAL CHAMPS!! Oh thats write the only possible place ANY sports can be good or excellent if it is played on the EAST COAST OR WEST COAST it really does not matter whats written or said you nay sayers will never change, thats ok we will just keep working and pound down all the walls and barriers you throw at us we have some great colleges and high schools in the MWC and someday soon will get by all the other BS. Go UTES!!!!
annarborute | 4:45 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
As an Utah alumni living in Ann Arbor I must say even the big program wonks are giving the Utes their due. Thanks for making Utah football ligit east of the Mississippi. And schedule Michigan again!
RE: Florida Fans | 4:50 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
How dumb are some of you. I read more than once that Florida would trounce Utah on the field? Did you not look at the spread before the Utes took the field against Alabama? There was up to a 10 point spread. The FACT is, you don't know until you play the game. There are soooooo many examples of this it's pitiful. The Miracle on Ice anyone?
Some of you are taking the road of the number of unranked opponents the Ute's played. And you know what? They beat everyone of them. They didn't lose to an unranked Ole Miss at HOME. About Texas, they lost to Tech who went on and got hammered by that same Ole Miss. Ole Miss got beat by Alabama. This "who beat who" has to be the next best thing to playing head to head. At least it shows actual playing. To sum it up, Utah wins by who they beat.
Skippy" A BYU fan | 5:46 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Way to go Utes! You are the real national champs in my eyes this year.
RE Skippy A BYU fan | 6:04 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
"Way to go Utes!" YOU ARE NOT A BYU FAN! WE DON'T CLAIM YOU ANYMORE, SO DON'T CLAIM US!
the debate | 6:13 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
what's with all the debate? AP polls say Florida is the Champions. BCS/Coaches say so too. That's that! I find it funny two days ago everyone was lobbying the AP for votes. Utah got votes! Just not enough. Now the AP is a joke? Make up your minds! You can't have it both ways i.e. before and after! Live with a great season! That's what you've got! Don't make the accomplishments feel cheap by complaining so much! Utah fans should be celebrating the teams success, not crying about what they did or did not "get". If you can't enjoy and respect your own accomplishments, why would you expect someone else too?
BSC blows | 6:24 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Let's look at the entire season. Utah beat a whole bunch of ranked and unranked teams. Florida beat did the same, but wait, they lost to an unranked team. Regular season has to go to the Utes.

Take the bowls, Utah crushed Alabama in New Orleans -- a home game for the Tide. Florida beat Oklahoma at home. Utah won in a more impressive fashion on the road while the Gators managed Sooners at home. The post-season has to go to the Utes.

Utes should be national champs!
Utes | 6:46 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Its dumb to say that Florida would beat the Utes. I'm not saying that Florida can't. Who knows, because surely Utah would get up for that game (going against their old coach) just like they got up for Alabama.
Whose to say Utah couldn't go undefeated in the SEC? They trounced the team that did go undefeated in the SEC.
Winning the NC is a Cinderella season. Everything has to go right for that team. It did for Utah and nobody else. Its mythical anyways, so why not give it to Utah.
The point is the BCS is a crock. Texas and USC have just as much gripe as UT for the NC. As a matter of fact, any team in the top 10 could play for the NC and prob win it on any given week. A playoff would req the NC to win at least 3 games against the best end of season competition. Get rid of the Mythical.

But if its a Myth, the NC might as well be Utah, they won it on the field.

I enjoyed every second of Utah beating Bama. I hope the Ute fans who went to New Orleans enjoyed their visit. Congrats on the undefeated season.

RE: Booooo..... | 1:07 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009

What planet are you living on to think the BCS is fair? Florida started being ranked in the five at the start of the season, so was no big challenge for them to get into the BCS bowl. As for Utah, it was unranked and had to move up 24 spots to even get their final ranking.

BCS is a sham and a joke!!
Barry Inscore | 8:46 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Let's see.. . USC claims the title because it only lost one game. (to a team Utah beat) Texas claims it on strength of schedule and only one loss. Utah beat the team that beat USC, Beat TCU who ended Boise State's unbeaten streak, clobbered BYU who was nationally ranked ahead of the Utes for much of the season and absolutely dominated Alabama who was ranked #1 until the last week of the season on practically their home field.
Urban Meyer, the coach who led Utah to their first humiliation of the BCS claims the title and he and the Ute coach are good friends.
Why don't the Utes and the Gators meet on a playground in Kansas without fanfare, cameras or hoopla and see who is really the best team? Just fer giggles. A non title bout for braggin rites on a neutral field far away from both campuses.
Nah . . . never happen. But we can dream, can't we?
Elcapitan | 9:18 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Let it be...only let the winnner of the Non BCS conferences playoff play in the title game. Might be some interesting results. The BCS cats would eventually crumble when have to face the real world of football...it would be David vs. Goliath and we know what happened there. Utah would have creamed the likes of either Florida or Okla. By the way, I could not even find the game on cable...just watched a good basketball game instead.
Re: 3:30 pm | 9:22 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
So now Utah is supposed to get credit because "they didn't know when they scheduled the games how bad Mich. would be"? All the Ute fans said all year was that BYU had "scheduled" bad UCLA and Washington teams. Sounds a little hypocritical to me.
Kitty Litter | 10:07 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
We won had a great season, we know we are national champs. Beating BYU just makes for a great season, sugar bowl was icing on the cake. Florida still has to live with a loss to Old Miss unranked at home. Old Miss can claim they beat the national champs. I would have rather had our season. We proved it on the field..UNBEATEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Questions | 10:39 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
If going undefeated and beating Alabama convincingly wasn't good enough for Utah to be the national champion, what would be? If we string together 2 undefeated seasons would that be enough to win ONE national championship? Maybe if Utah had agreed to let all of their opponents start the game with a 10 point lead that would be enough? (Had they done that the Pac 10 would have beat them and even a MWC foe would have tipped them over, but I think they would have still handled the SEC.)

Maybe we should just agree to play fair and let the MWC champions, whose conference dominated their Pac10 and SEC foes, be rightfully declared the National Champions that they have proven to be!
Clare | 10:47 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I don't even watch or like football, but it's a no brainer. The Utes were the best. Can't argue with the math!

It should be UTAH vs. USC for the national title!...HANDS DOWN, TWO OF THE BEST TEAMS THIS YEAR BY FAR!

I don't care what florida, oklahoma, texas fans say...but REAL college football fans can agree...when I say " SC & UTAH" are the two most deserving according to their performance ON THE FIELD!

ON THE FIELD PEOPLE!!
tony | 4:23 a.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Utah earned it on the field? Ridiculous. If that's the case, then Harvard should stake a claim for No. 2 -- given it's one-loss record. The fact that no one tries to advance Ivy and other small school teams into the calculus shows that even the so-called "fairness" anti-BCS crowd is just as biased as everyone else.
BleedCougarBlue | 11:15 a.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Gotta hand it to the Utes, they are a team that is really on the move. Undefeated in 2004 and ended up ranked something like 4th or 5th. Undefeated in 2008 and end up ranked no. 2 in one poll. They've beaten something like 8 or 9 BCS teams? And they've won their last 8 or 9 bowl games in a row?

I LOVE my Cougars but you'd have to be an idiot to even try to make the argument that the Utes have not been doing a LOT of things right lately.

As a guy raised in the state of Utah I love the Utes (root for them in every game all season but one....), still think a huge chunk of your fans are classless.

Anyway, to the Ute team and staff, waaaaay nice job!
Obama on Board | 2:56 p.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Yesterday President Elect Obama himself said Utah has a case for the national championship, and 4 of 6 BCS computer give the championship to Utah. I think President Obama (i.e. he who has more power and reason than the BCS) should invite the Utes to the White House to celebrate, and show the BCS that someone above their head is doing more than just talking about fixing the BCS problem.
Go Utes | 1:04 a.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Yes, Florida lost to a 4 loss unranked team at the time. I think they both played the same number of ranked teams (at the time of playing them) It is Much Harder to go UNDEFEATED than BCS supporters like to give credit. Most of these top BCS teams play cream puffs in their non conference schedule and almost Always at HOME! Even then there are TONS of close games that they were lucky to win throughout their season also!

The best barometer is who played Alabama the toughest. Florida beat them by 11 at HOME and Utah beat them by 14 on a Semi-Road environment and anybody watching BOTH games knows it was not nearly that close and the Florida game was perhaps a bit closer than the score showed! EVERYTHING OBJECTIVE SAYS UTES ARE #1! GO UTES!
Geeees | 2:08 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Beat one good team! You play in a confereance full of "we suck A&M's" get over it, play some good non conference teams and than you'll have the right to cry. Look at the non conferance foes Utah play. Look at how they barely beat some bad teams. Get over it, I can put of team of 40 year old beer drinkers and than play and beat 12 pee-wee teams. The rest of the nation is laughing at the way your state is carrying on.
Anonymous | 9:02 p.m. Jan. 11, 2009
Yeah, the Utes earned it on the field.........in their own minds.
