Let the Yewts play Florida's or Oklahoma's schedule and let's see them finish the season with one loss. I don't think so...they are close to a .500 team in those conferences. Utah played out of their minds against Alabama, and Alabama had no motivation whatsoever...no way Utah hangs with those two teams who played last night. A whole nother class o' football, Yewt fans. Utah played a couple decent teams this year and had a great year...national champs? I don't think so.
Utes are National Champs! | 9:15 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Why cant the U of U self label themselves the national champions? Why can't they put up a sign at their stadium? Why dont they put it in their football program handed out at games next season?

I loved this article and the ones published nationally by Rick and others. I live in So Cal and graduated from the Y, but I am so fed up with the strangle hold the the BCS has on this great game.

If the SEC and the other BCS conferences are so great, then let the boys play and prove it on the field in a tourney.

Change is comming!!!!!!!

It's all garbage. The BCS club is led by greedy-self-serving slime. I like to believe that one of them will be man enough to stand up to his own crowd and say "This is wrong".

Utah is not and should not be number 1. Florida would crush them because Florida, even though they lost one game, is by far the better team today, which is all that matters. The national championship isn't for the best team all season, it's for who is the best at the end of the season, just like in any sport that has a tournament at the end.
unbiased observer | 9:26 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
There's a reason that the Utes weren't voted number 1. They barely beat a very sub par Michigan (who also lost AT home to 3-9 powerhouse Toledo), they needed a questionable pass interference call to barely squeak past Oregon St. at Rice Ecles (Oregon St. outgained Utah 405 to 337 yards), they needed TCU to miss a 26 and 35 yard field goal to beat TCU at Rice Ecles (TCU outgained the Utes 416 to 275 yards, and they only beat unranked Air Force and New Mexico by 7 and 3 points respectively.

Did the Utes deserve to play in a playoff to determine the national champion? Absolutely. Did they deserve the national championship under the current system? No. What about undefeated Auburn in '04? What about one loss Oregon in '01? Once the dust settles, Utahns will realize that the Utes deserved their final ranking under the current, patently biased system.
You Gotta Love Urban Meyer | 9:42 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utah gives the guy his big break. He then feasts on Ron McBride's recruits for two years and moves on to Florida without so much as a thank you. Then, after he wins a controversial NC game that by rights should have included his old Utah team, refuses to even give them a shout out when asked about the controversy. What a putz.

Excellent season UTES! You are the national champs in my book.

Robinson, leave it alone. Hatch and Shurtleff only got into it for political polishing and self serving purposes. And I think that is why you won't let it go either. Perhaps you could write about something that you haven't covered for a couple of weeks like Larry Miller.
Utes are good... | 9:52 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The Utes are good, but are they the National Champs? Who knows? Argue schedules, how many ranked teams were beaten, whose wins were better, whether or not a team would have been undefeated in a different conference, it's all opinion. We need a playoff, until then no one will ever know who the true National Champion is.
Thanks BCS | 9:58 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I am happy for the Utes. While I don't like the BCS system, I have to think that in the old system, Utah would never have had a chance to play Alabama in a bowl game. They might have ended up playing someone from the Big 10, Big 12, WAC, or PAC 10 in the Holiday Bowl. I wished more for the seniors this year but lookout BCS this is only the beginning. Go MWC!
Booooo and Bsu fans | 10:00 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Quit showing how ignorant you are about sports...Neither of you had your facts right. Utah beat 2 top 7 teams this year...TCU and Alabama....they beat 4 top 25 teams when you include Oregon State and BYU. They did all they could do under the system...no weak schedule argument will fly this year...look at Florida's schedule they have some cupcakes and lost to Old Miss. Bsu got beat by the MWC's 2nd place team. Osu beat USC and Utah beat them the next week. Alabama was #1 the entire month of November. Know something before you type something or keep playing with your crayons
Greatest season?? | 10:02 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
congrats utes on the greatest football season any Utah team has ever had. Your #2 ranking is the highest ever achieved by a Utah college football team...what? they did?,,, never mind somebody just told me that BYU was #1 in the country in 1984, so my bad..Congrats Utes on the second greatest football seaon of any Utah college football team in history.

Beating one top ten team doesn't cut it. Texas and Oklahoma belong ahead of Utes in the final polls.

AP poll wasn't even close for the number one ranking. Second place ranking was sympathy vote to help break up BCS choke hold on college football. AP voters had every incentive to put Utah 1st as a statement of disdain for BCS system.

Note that those with the right to vote in the polls (more knowledgeable people than the average Ute fan)chose Florida. Get over it, Florida is resounding National Champs.

Why cant the U of U self label themselves the national champions? Why can't they put up a sign at their stadium? Why dont they put it in their football program handed out at games next season?"

It's a good idea, but it would, in reality, look stupid and immature.

BYU had to string together two good years to put up the NC in '84. Utes need to do that too. That is why it's so funny when Ute Fans say there needs to be an astrisk by '84, because badk then BYU went through the same National Argument crap '83 and '84.

Do it again next year and you will see why BYU actually had to work twice as hard than anyone else for their NC.

Good luck next year. You will see how fun it is to have a target on your back for each game. With 2004 and 2008 Utah is starting to build a national reputation. With BYU, Utah and TCU all in the top 25, this year, next year will be the year of the "perfect storm". One of those teams need to step-it-up.
Tuffy Parker | 10:13 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
A few simple observations:

1 - Isnt it interesting that there are a significant number of Gator fans who feel compelled to post on this article in defense of their ranking?

2 - The BCS reminds me of pseudo-dictators like Hugo Chavez or Presidente de jour in one of the West African nations. They have all the power and all the money. They insist that they are doing whats best for the people but in reality what they are focused on is lining their pockets with more money and accumulating more power. Fairness plays no role no matter how much the BCS buffoons speak of doing whats best for college football. They are doing whats best for those who are already in. Its a sham and most likely illegal. Can you imagine the uproar if the top companies in the country formed a cartel to enhance their business outlook at the expense of smaller businesses?

3 - A playoff system is way overdue. Shame on the NCAA for allowing this debacle to continue.
Wait, Doug. | 10:18 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Did you just seriously compare something as banal--on the grand scale of things important--like college football, to the social stratification and social restrictions of the Indian subcontinent?

What's next, Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham and Lee Corso rank up there with Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru?

Yes, tough break for the Utes. The BCS, with all its proponents and detractors, is simply about overinflated athletic entertainment, translated into cold, hard cash because of simple economics: supply and demand. Nothing more.

Not a caste system. Not a rally cry for civil rights. Not the sans-culottes of 1780s France. You know, things that matter and are worth your precious "revolution."

I'm not really a Ute fan, but I loved watching them whip up on Alabama, Saban & Co. Utah is #1 this year as far as I'm concerned. Great job Utes. You totally dominated Alabama. You were sacking John Parker Wilson so many times I didn't want the game to end.

The BCS has proven that no non-BCS team can ever hope to play in the national championship...EVER.

Until the system changes anyone who goes undefeated has a legitimate claim to the championship. Especially when they are the only undefeated team.
Be a Utah Man | 10:32 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009

Get Over it already | 10:31 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
There have been lots of undefeated teams that were not rated #1 - even before the BCS. Look back at Penn State as a prime example. JoPa has had a number of perfect seasons and only in rcent years have then been rated #1 - after joining one of the BCS conferences.

If Utah is worried about, join a conference with the big boys and stop whining about it.

It was surprise enough that the U actually beat 'Bama. Be grateful for the day.
Florida would crush? | 10:34 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
To all claiming that Florida would crush, I heard the same thing over and over before the Sugar Bowl with "Alabama" inserted for "Florida." But Alabama did not crush the Utes, did they? But I'm sure this time you are right, of course. No need for them to actually play. We have seen that the national pundits are always right. They called the Sugar Bowl ... well, hmmm. I just know they are right about Florida though. No question.

Enjoy winning by votes. What a great way to win a national championship. So storybook. So infallible.

The Utes are the only undefeated team in the Nation. I think that says something.

Could they have beat the Gators? I'd say no. Definitely not.
BUT, should they have had the opportunity to try? ABSOLUTELY YES.

The NCAA needs to rid itself of the BCS. But it is a huge money-making juggernaut, do I don't see that happening anytime soon.

By the way, I'm a Sooner fan living in Norman Oklahoma. So don't think I'm jaded in any way. I see it for what it is.

GO ROCKY! | 10:46 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Like any good Rocky movie - did I say good? - Let the champions prove it. Book a special game to let Utah have the chance to strip the title from Florida. The schools have got their money already, so they would have nothing to lose but a helping of pride. A friendly title challenge bout would give both teams opportunity for even more revenue, and better yet, to prove who the real champions are. If I were Florida, I would want to prove it to the world. On the other hand, they won't, because they know they would be royally trounced, stomped, and humiliated by the underdog. GO ROCKY! Well done Utes!
Herby | 10:55 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
We can say who deserves the championship and who doesn't, but quite frankly, nobody knows who deserves it! I think the Utes deserve a legitimate chance to play. The problem is every team/coach is proclaiming their team is number 1, when we really truly do not know who would be number 1 unless there was a playoff system in place.

Unbiased Observer--I don't care about yardage or stats or questionable calls--by the way you can't measure questionable calls. These things don't matter, at the end of the day, what matters is the win. The Utes this year became gamers--mentally tough toward the end of the game and each game they were able to win. Statistically, on paper, Alabama should have beat the Utes. I thought the Utes looked better on both sides of the ball than both teams last night.
MWC problem | 11:06 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The Utes played 5 teams that where ranked during the season. (I will list the highest ranking that team had)
Michigan USA#24
Oregon State BCS#17
TCU AP#7
BYU USA#8
Alabama #1

The problem is 7 of the 13 games the teams did not even received one vote in either the AP or USA.

Note: Air Force made it to AP#28

The problem is the MWC.
From a Cougar Fan | 11:09 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I did my own analysis of perceived conference strength based on final top 25 ranking (assigning 25 points for a #1 ranking and 1 point for a #25 ranking, using both the coaches and AP poll) and came up with the following conference rankings:
1. B12 150 points
2. SEC 142 points
3. P10 96 points
4. MWC 90 points
5. B10 84 points
6. ACC 36 points
7. WAC 28 points
8. Big East 24 points

This is based purely on the final polls, but seems to show that the MWC was better than at least 3 BCS conferences, 4 if you consider their 6-2 record against the P10 this year.

I fully believe Utah was robbed by the BCS system of a fair chance at the title. I don't want to hear arguments about being from a weak conference, especially from Big East, ACC, Big 10 and PAC 10 conferences.
Paul Justis | 11:15 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
What a bunch of Utah cry-babies. Look at the polls. Go on ESPN.com and see how the country voted. Utah had a great team but good luck playing in a real conference you bunch of sissy-boys.

GO GATORS!!! SEE YOU NEXT YEAR AT THE BCS CHAMPIONSHIP FOLKS!!
Excuse me? | 11:15 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The utes "earned it on the field"? And what exactly do you think Florida was doing this whole time?

Look, there have been undefeated teams in past years that have not been awarded the national championship. Quit yer whining and be glad you had a great year whiny yoot fans. Sheesh.
Utah is 25 - 0 and. . . | 11:20 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Hey BOOO get a grip man. Maybe Utah should schedule all those non-conference power house teams that the SEC teams play. You know; Troy, Western Kentucky, West Carolina, The Citadel, appalachian State and of course Hawaii. You are a prejudiced hypocrite. All you corn fed bubbas were crying in your hands at the Sugar Bowl.

The BCS sytem is broken - for two years UTAH is 25 and 0 and they didn't get a chance to play a National title game. Right.
The sad truth | 11:27 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
We will never know. Utah proved they could win in a playoff system, USC proved although they lost to Oregon state they should have had the right to play for the opportunity, fix it its broke.

It's hard to say as a BYU fan, but Utah got robbed. They deserved the National Championship even more than BYU did when they won it in 1984. They beat better teams than the Y did and they beat teams with diverse styles (Alabama/Oregon State) showing that they are well rounded. Go Utes, congratulations--national champs in my book.
Appleman | 12:03 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
My argument isn't that the Utes should be #1 (thought I'd love to see it). I don't think they could take Florida especially considering Urban Meyer's familiarity with the Utah program. It's about how the system 1) Keeps certain schools at the top in order to keep the money at those schools and 2) really can't determine a winner. Several coaches all claimed that their teams were #1.
CP | 12:14 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Sorry but in my book the Gators aren't the TRUE Champs. Their record was 12-1 where as the Utes' were 13-0. So, Gators in reality your just the champs in the BCS' fanatasies.
sbc | 12:19 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Anyone that says that (BOOOOO included) AP should put Florida #1 better not complain about BYU taking it in 1984!
Anyone that says Utah wouldn't be perfect if they played in the SEC I can't believe how blind you are. Put a Utah in the PAC 10 and Barry Switzer needs to eat his words. Those recruits that passed on them for a chance to play in the Rose Bowl EVERY Year NO MATTER WHAT. All of the sudden commit to Utah. They would be a regular in BCS playing for a National Championship every few years or so. You think I am wrong? They have been in the BCS twice now when the "big" boys don't even want them there. They even had to rebuild after Urban took a lot of recruits with him to Florida (proves my point above). And that 17.5 million will build some mighty nice facilities to impress any recruit. So my answer, put Utah in the PAC 10 and they will prove to you that they belong.
History lesson | 12:32 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
(Wow, not sure why my original comment was not posted. Take 2:)

Doug, your logic is flawed if you are comparing something as inconsequential as college football with the social stratification and restrictions in the Indian subcontinent (caste system).

What next, going to compare Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham and John Swofford to Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru?

The BCS, simply put, is: an egomaniacal machine of overinflated athletic egos with one ignominious goal in mind--sate an insatiable hunger of supply and demand directly related to a maligned and boated sports entertainment ethic.

No, Doug, this is NOT a revolution. This is not the 1780s French sans-culottes. This is not the 1960 Committee of 100. This is not 1998's Trident Ploughshares. And it certainly is not 1942 in Le Chambon-sur-Lignon.

This is college football. Nothing more.

Write about something that truly matters if you are going to be so presumptuous as to compare it with Fort Sumter, Bastille or Boston Harbor.
Dan Patrick... | 12:37 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Suggested a solution to this mess. Have Obama invite the Gators and the Utes to the White House and play a game of flag football on the White House lawn. Hopefully, Utah wins with their defense.

Go Utes

Hey, Mr. History Lesson | 1:23 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Isn't there a NPR program you should be listening to (or some other board with posters that are in your IQ caliber) rather than attempting to show us dumb football fans how smart you are? I have a doctorate (from Utah only) and I don't have the slightest notion what you are talking about.

As for the real issue, I was hoping Utah would get more than 16 AP votes with the civil disobedience factor going for them against the conspiracy that is the BCS. I don't think I would have the confidence to pick the Utes against the Gators and the Trojans, but their ability to hold serve throughout the regular season and then smash the Tide on the big stage in hostile territory means that they are legitimately in the argument for best team in the nation right now.

Big East, ACC and even the Big Ten -- the Utes (on behalf of the Mountain West) have put your yourly claim in BCS in jeopardy. The BCS system right now stinks and you are their achilles heel to bring it down. The other conferences will throw you under the bus before they lose their money.
Cache | 1:40 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Congratulations to Kyle Whittingham and a great UTE team. I don't usually cheer for the Utes, but I did this year. A great season to place in the history books! Nice Job!
BCSHater | 1:43 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Nobody can say who is the best team unless they play each other. Texas beat Oklahoma, Oklahoma gets to play, seems dumb. Florida beat Alabama to get to the national title game, Utah beats the same Alabama more thoroughly yet it counts for nothing? Fact is the BCS is all money all the time and controversies like this are great in the hopes that they can cause some change in the current system.
Texas Fan | 1:47 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
All you Utah fans stop talking about a national champion. You didnt play 4 or 5 ranked teams because its where you finsh the season that matters everything else is a guess. You played 2. If you use that arguement Texas beat the then #1, #12, #9, and lost on the road on the last second of the game to #8. I do not claim they beat 4 top 10 teams because some are no longer there. You had a great season but 4 or 5 teams in the country would have gone undefeated with your schedule. BYU is average at best and no longer in the top 25. TCU is a top 15 team but got rolled by OU and Alamaba is overrated. Yes you had a great game against Alamaba but it was your one game. That is not enough to say you deserve the national championship. I dont even believe Texas does either though the should have been in the title game. If Utah plays in the Pac 10 3 losses. Big 12 3-4 losses. SEC 3 or 4 losses. Sorry but it tough for any college to play there best week in and week out.
Dumbin' it down for ya | 1:56 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I'm sure there is an NPR program I should be listening to.

Instead, I wanted Mr. Robinson to know that his comparison of college football to a caste system is seriously flawed and incorrect.

Try another comparison. Maybe like the one I heard from Frank DeFord. On NPR. Something about the BCS and Thanksgiving, the grown-ups' table and the kids' table.

For you big brains out there, go ahead and search Google for it.

By the way, you have a doctorate from Utah and don't know the basics about civil disobedience or continental history? That's just really sad.
Go Utah | 2:17 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Surely everyone would agree that all football games are decided on the field, not by talk. Most sports in the NCAA have national tournaments or playoffs to determine their champions, why not football? I don't know if Florida or Utah should be the national champion. Maybe Texas and USC have an equal claim. I can say with totally honesty that I don't know who deserves it. Why, because they didn't get to play each other, simple as that. Fans like me and you and the BCS are only making a guess. I would like to see the national championship decided on the football field rather than by any other means. Let's play the game to decide who is #1.
Perspective | 2:17 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I believe that the #2 ranking is well deserved and is a compliment to the Utes. I would like to make a couple of points just for the sake of clarity.

First, the SEC is still superior to the MWC. I have two degrees from the UofU and have attended over the years numerous football games in SLC and Provo. I then taught at a SEC university and attended SEC football games. Based on my experience, week in and week out during the season, there is no question that the SEC is a conference that is far superior than the MWC in all facets of football. What Utah has proved this year in one exceptional game still does not negate this fact.

Second, institute a playoff system and my guess is that the interest of college football during the season will nose-dive just as it has for college basketball. Love or hate the polls, it does bolster ratings.

RE: to get over it | 2:22 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Did you not watch the Sugar Bowl? You talk all big about Florida being the best at the end of the season...Scoreboard!!! Yeah Florida looked great the 2nd half of their BCS game but Utah straight handled the SEC powerhouse all 4 quarters. Please move to UV and eliminate your contact with the outside world.

the following teams had the following ranking at one point during during the season that Utah played and won!

Michigan USA#24
