Case Made? | 11:05 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
All the games are over? Utah has 'made their case'. The polls come out tomorrow. If Utah does not receive the votes needed for the #1 spot I hope all this National Champ talk will go away. It gets old!

If they do get the AP vote... Hang the banner! You earned it!
re: THAT'S FUNNY! | 11:03 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Utah has beaten four ranked teams, two that will finish in the top 10, and two that should finish in the top 25. They have lost to none. The 1984 Cougars ended up beating no ranked teams. I am not going to say that they couldn't have won the title in a playoff, but I think it is doubtful based no their game against Michigan. We saw what happened when an undefeated Hawaii faced Georgia last year. People used that comparison for Utah, but Utah had beaten some ranked teams, and showed they were up for it. I think the 2004 Utes could've won the title that year, but they hadn't beaten any ranked teams that year. They needed a playoff to prove it, and I think they would've! This year, we have a team that had a better record than Florida. They had beaten three currently ranked teams prior to Alabama, and lost to none versus Florida beating two ranked teams (Alabama and Georgia). I need to point out that Florida lost to Mississippi at home! Again, only a playoff would tell for sure, but Utah definitely looks more deserving. As it works by a vote, then vote UTAH!

Maybe you should get some fresh air! I live in the heart of SEC land, and everybody here feels that Utah deserves to be the National Champion, or should at least play for it. They were all rolling their eyes before the Sugar Bowl, but they all became believers afterwards!

To all you so called BYU fans, stop the ignorance. Lets admit that we really can't answer whether or not Utah could have beaten all takers because they bounced Alabama, in SEC country, after they narrowly lost to Florida. If it was BYU we would be upset to not have a chance. I hate Utah as much as anybody, but major props to them. They deserve a shot at it, and if the AP voters had any guts they would give Utah a share of it because it would do college football as a whole a lot of good. The best thing that could happen to the conference now would be a BCS game win by both BYU and TCU in the next two years. BYU fans, be glad that someone from our conference had the guts to go out and prove that we belong. Lets just hope we can do the same.

BYU Fans grow up. I am a graduate of BYU and have been a BYU football van since 1980, when I attended the school. Utah has an awesome team and should definitely be #1. I congratulate them.

Now for BYU, hopefully, their team will burn with envy at Utah's success and will come out next year and act like a football team rather than the local Relief Society knitting group at a humanitarian project.

send us to the colliseum, send us to the swamp, send us anywhere to get tested. after watching all the bowl games i would have to say the utes are #1.

I have called the BYU Athletic Department twice with this suggestion and NO return call.

I suggest that BYU have an appreciation dinner for the University of Utah football team and coaches. Lets honour them for their wonderful season even though they beat us. I'm tired of all the stupid comments on this blog - way to go Utah and I hope we beat you next year. But lets honour the two schools Brigham Young started and be cool about it
Stenar | 12:02 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utah's strength of schedule kills them? They beat 4 teams ranked in the top 16 and one who was ranked #1 for five weeks. They beat more ranked teams than Florida, USC or Texas. DUH. How is that a weak schedule exactly?
B.Y.Who? | 12:01 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
The BCS is doing the Utes good right now. If there were a playoff this year there is no way the Utes could win three or four in a row against elite football programs. Alabama was the worst team in the top 5. They could win one and maybe two,but no more. So because of the BCS system the Utes actually have an argument for being number 1. Be thankful.

I also think that the Utes should send the kicker for TCU some flowers and extra scholarship money. He actually lost the game for them and won it for Utah. Utah didn't win that game, the TCU kicker did.

byu, who run utah fotball byu people what happened those utah player, why they don't come and run the utah ball game?
Matt | 12:18 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utah is the national champions. No one can prove otherwise. I think it would be an awesome idea if Utah should put up a big national champions banner like BYU's 1984 banner.
Giants | 12:22 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Should we require the NY Giants to give there SuperBowl trophy back to the Patriots. Clearly, it was a fluke catch that allowed the Giants, who were clear underdogs to win. Everybody in the country new that the patriots were argueably prob the best team of all time, on the doorstep of undefeated season. They lost, Giants were superbowl champs.
Same thing with Utes, they played close games, but in the end, they won, the others lost. Opinions on who the best is are just opinions. The answers are on the field.

Utes National Champs
Weird... | 1:24 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I could swear that I was just on ESPN and the main Headline (You know, the one with the big picture) reads, "They are Chompions" referring to The University of Florida Gators, who coincidentily won the BCS title game and the AP vote, weird that this headline would read that ESPN says Utah is the champ...Oh wait, it was Rick Reilly, not ESPN. I guess this headline is a mistake.
Number#2 | 7:50 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Number #2 okay! I"m a huge Utes fan, but I hate the dumb logic, utes fan have here on this forum. Utes should be number one because we beat Alabama better then Florida? Did you guys forget, we almost lost to TCU? which Okalahoma destroy? then they got beat by the gators? So we played great against alabama, but not TCU, which okalahoma destroy and was beaten by a great gator team, okay #2 is where we belong. But after watching last nite game, utes would struggle against that gator Defense!!
USA TODAY POLL | 12:43 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
has it right with FLorida and USC at 1 and 2. UTah played out of their mind football for one night in their bowl game. Not taking anyhting away they also play in the mountain west conference.
Bum Steer | 2:06 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
As a diehard Longhorn, I think that the only team without an "oops" on its record should be awarded the title, particularly if that team played a reasonable schedule. Beating Alabama should not be considered a one-shot effort; I assure you the Tide was out to prove that it was deserving of respect after being spanked by Florida. USC loves to gloat about its Rose Bowl win but becomes testy when one mentions its loss to Oregon State. That, and a near loss to Arizona, not a powerhouse. Florida may have been great against OU last night, but OU had the same problems with the Gators that it had with the Horns, being out played. Florida still has to get people to ignore that game in which, at their house, Ole Miss beat them with a reject from Texas as their quarterback. What does Utah have to explain? Nothing that I can see, just a zero in the loss column. We'd be champs today if we had Utah's record, but we have a last second loss to explain. Hats off to the Utes. You have nothing to explain. You should be the champs.

Is Rick Reilly going to write an article on the yewts unfair practices of having older players due to their missions like he did for BYU a few years ago? This guy Reilly is a tool. He's just writing controversial articles to make money and all the yewt fans are falling all over themselves to gobble it up. WE'RE #2! WE'RE #2! WE'RE #2!
dre day | 5:00 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I'm sick of people pointing out how Utah barely beat New Mexico and shouldn't have beat TCU a team Oklahoma destroyed. This proves nothing, every team this season had AT LEAST one bad game evident in how all but one team lost at least a game. And Utah WON those games so case closed. Also after TCU lost to Oklahoma they started playing noticably better and Utah handled TCU the whole game except the first quarter when the Frogs got a few big plays that led to scores. Florida lost to Ole' Miss, a team weaker then TCU, at home and USC lost to a team that Utah beat the very next week. And if any of you watched the Michigan game it was obvious that Utah was by far the superior team however the Utes kept shooting themselves in the foot the whole game but still found a way to win. In the end Utah won all of their games four against ranked teams and in by far the MWC's strongest year ever. Utah has put together the most impressive resume in the nation and not even getting a shot at the title is a joke.

All yall haters have been lookin for a reason to diss the Utes all season and now all you have is sayin that they arent number 1? Come on where did all your teams finish? Except for Florida below Utah. I dont know bout all you guys but thats pretty good especially for a non-bcs team. So keep tryin to come up wit sumthin to make yourselves feel better but you cant take away the fact that Utah busted the bcs for a second time and became the first team in the bcs era to have two undefeated teams. Utah is without a doubt the flagship non bcs program in the nation so all you haters can eat it
DDH | 11:02 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Utes, Get a banner in your stadium! Do it Now! Everyone will forget florida soon. You're claim to #1 is more legit than theirs anyway.

From a Diehard Cougar fan.. Congratulations and Thank you.
Party will end | 12:37 a.m. Jan. 10, 2009
The boys club that is the BCS won't be around forever in current form. In fact, I give it 5-10 years tops. My guess is it is an anti-trust violation and illegal. Further, President Obama has made it clear that he wants a playoff.

That said, the federal government has considerable power over colleges and universities because of all the federal dollars that it grants in student financial aid, research funding, and what not. The government can step in at some point and say it wants equality and fairness in college football, as it has with other inequalities in college athletics in the past.

I'm looking forward to the party ending for the SEC, Big 12, and other conferences that benefit from the flawed system. The so-called major programs are going to have to get used to losing to the Utahs and Boise States some more when these teams are finally given a legitimate shot to compete.
UTE FAN | 1:09 a.m. Jan. 10, 2009
Regardless what anyone says Ute's should be the National Champs they didn't lose a game. Case closed. And why is byu even in the conversation they lost..This is 2009, not 1984. Get over yourselves...
