Don't bite the hand that feeds u | 12:57 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I think it's absolutely hilarious that Urban Meyer gets another opportunity to give his stepping-stone job the shaft once again!! He gets to play for the NC with a one-loss team while his understudy goes undefeated and gets nothing. HAR and GUFFAW!!!

Hey Kryle Whettingham quit yer whining about not getting to be #1 already. You wanna make Urban mad at you so he'll stop giving you tips on how to coach?
the Answer | 1:08 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Kyle is whining about not being voted #1 but he already knows what he needed to do to make that happen and he didn't do it so it's his own fault.

All he needed to do was take the job at BYU, a school that has already proven it can 1) win a National Championship outright with no split polls and 2) win the Heisman. Not to mention a bunch of other prestigious awards.

I'll bet right about now Kyle is thinking "hind site is 20/20". Too bad.

RE: Don't bite the hand...

You've got to be kidding me!! You think that in Urban's spare time he's giving Kyle pointers on how to coach, I'm sure that's exactly what goes on. You're an IDIOT! Kyle has more than proved he deserves this season all by himself, but NICE TRY.

I'm as diehard a Cougar fan as there is, but I have to say, yours is one of the most bone-headed posts I've ever read. Grow up already and show a little respect.

Utah is more deserving of winning the National Championship this season than any other team. Given the outcry after BYU won it's National Championship, it's almost certain that BYU would have received even less consideration for NC than Utah -- sort of payback for BYU's supposed "undeserved" National Championship.

After watching the media circus this season, maybe a few Utah fans will be a little more understanding of the bias that BYU had to overcome to win its first National Championship.

"official" trophy or not, Utah won the National Championship this year.
Utah28 | 2:15 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
The anti-trust laws regarding this matter need to be challenged regardless of who or how many choose to challenge it. In view of how slowly the wheels of progress move, maybe the non'BCS D-1 schools should form their own alliance and create their own national championship, similar to what the AFL did many years ago to force the hand of the NFL. It's obviously not quite the same thing but the theory still applies. This way there would be a true challenge to who the National Champion really was. Example; say Utah in the non-BCS polls advanced to the championship game and won and ended the season ranked #1 in the non-BCS D-1 polls. How long would it be before the BCS champion would have to play them to determine who the real champion was. It might cause a complete reconstruction of the bowl system where non-BCS schools are playing BCS schools in a variety of post season bowl games as well. I'm sure there are many holes in this idea but changes need to be made and non-BCS schools need to do something to control their own destiny. Any thoughts on this?
BYU fan who stands with the Utes | 2:17 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I'm a diehard BYU fan, but I'd be remiss to say that Utah has failed to do something special this year.

Everything they have done inspires BYU, the MWC, and everyone who fights the BCS.

The Swofford guy from the BCS saying the BCS is LEGAL?? Are you freaking kidding me? LEGAL?? I'm about beside myself here!

And then he has the audacity to say they can WIN legal battles? Forget it!

How stupid do these BCS people think we are? Don't they sound so tough and honest, too! He said that the BCS is trustworthy, so we should just believe him then, eh?

Boise State and Utah (TWICE) have exposed the BCS for what it is--bunk!

I hope all of the BCS people end up eating their words soon. They are nothing but a bunch of condescending, snobby, money-grubbing, conspiring, dishonest, unethical, selfish scoundrels.
Anonymous | 2:41 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
And USC played tough competition week in and week out. They lost to Oregon State, who turned out to be mediocre at best. The Pac-10 was more pathetic than the MWC this year and anyone who has any clue about college football will back me up on that one. The MWC was one of the top 5 conferences in all of college football (just as ESPN, they ranked them 3rd). Give them the credit they deserve. How many other conferences had 3 teams in the top 16 of the BSC I mean BCS poll, going into the Bowl Season?
RE: The Answer | 2:50 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
And what has BYU done since the inception of the BCS? NOTHING!!! Utah is 2-0 in BCS title games and I for one think they should be National Champions this year. No, I am not a Ute fan, I am a college football fan and the BCS has taken away the integrity of the game. I don't think Kyle Whittingham would have fit in at BYU and even an undefeated BYU team would not be National Champions. The BCS is in control to make sure a BCS conference school wins it all. Wake up and smell the roses. It is all about the MONEY and that is all the BCS cares about.
Business as usual | 3:14 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I think the non BCS conference should conduct a college football poll each week. They could establish some real standards on how the teams are ranked something that we can all follow from the game highlights published in the news papers and on the Internet.

Lets spread the word to HL with the BSC system if the colleges Presidents do not have enough GUTS to do the right thing and insist on a system that is fair and includes all conferences lets get behind the law makers who do have the guts to challenge the current system or lets crown our on NC.

Regardless of what happens the only way to get the system changed is to show an unprecedented support from the fans and the public that the system is flawed and needs to be changed. If we do not have the guts to do that then next year and the years to come the only rights we have is to set back and keep our mouths shut and let the BCS jerks run the show business as usual.

Has "Coach" Mendenhall come out with a statement supporting the Utes as national champions? If not, why not?

Let's go "Coach". Stand up and proclaim it. The quest to perfection was attained by Utah. If you had done it, wouldn't you be proclaiming the title of national champion on BYU?

It is the right thing for all BYU fans (of which I am one of the strongest) to support for the Utes what we would be expecting for the Cougars in the same situation.

It starts at the top. Holmoe? Mendenhall? We're waiting...
Simple | 3:24 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Stop taking the money and boycott the "BCS" championship game; don't attend and don't watch. No money/no more BCS.

Oklahoma didn't lose at home. They lost on a neutral field.

It should all come down to one thing. If Notre Dame were undefeated we wouldn't be having this discussion. They would be in the title game.

NAME (and MONEY) IS EVERYTHING.

It doesn't hurt me at all to say Utah is #1. They earned it and are a very, very great program. Let's all be true football fans and be civil in all things. Go Utes! Thanks Utes.
afrank | 4:23 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I would like to take this opportunity to say how disappointed I am that we are not talking about an undefeated BYU's case for a national championship. As usual, BYU just could not deliver. Furthermore, their appearance (or lack thereof) in the Las Vegas Bowl was embarrassing. It was the biggest waste of 50 bucks ever, and I didn't even have to travel. I am tired of cheering for BYU. It is worse that cheering for the Jazz. Therefore, I am not doing it anymore until they get their act together and play some real football. In the mean time, go Utes! They absolutely deserve to be called National Champions, and remember BYU, this could have been yours.
Why Not Them? | 4:36 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Hey, if baseball can have a "world series" that includes only U.S. teams, why can't the BCS have a "national champion" that includes only BCS favorites?
Skill or Popularity | 4:37 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Doesn't it come down to who the majority of fans (read "dollars") want to see, not who is the most talented? In other words, this is a popularity contest, not a contest of skill.
Utah "fans" out of control | 4:39 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Utah: Congrats on your year on Sugarbowl win.
Utah: Stop acting like you are the 1st school to get jobbed by the BCS. Boise St. got jobbed when they beat OU. You got jobbed in 04. Auburn got jobbed in 04. Now we have some attorney threatning to sue? Why didn't he threaten to sue when Boise punked OU? Oh that's right, because it wouldn't get him re-elected. Until something changes, someone will get jobbed EVERY year. This year, it happens to be you. Why not just enjoy your bowl win instead of acting like, well, typical Utah fans.

Ummmmm, I'm guessing, like the rest of the country, he doen't think the Utes season earned them #1.

But you people on the hill go on with your ticker tape parade, and disrepecting BYU about their game with Oklahoma, and predicating an injury to Max Hall second game of the season.

Geez, Ute fans trash bronco all year long, and now want his help?

Can't you do something on your own?
re:Philly Coug | 5:57 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I think you would be supprised, I for one would say undefeated cougar team if its resume matched what Utahs does would deserve a #1 ranking (trust me it is painful for me to say but it is true) Time for things to change
Are you sure you want a playoff? | 6:59 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Dear Ute Fans...

Are you sure you want the BCS to end? As it stands now, you can dominate one quality opponent during the course of a season and claim you have a legitimate claim to a national title.

If we instituted a playoff, you would have played an Alabama team with some fire in the belly because they had something to play for. Lets say you made it past Alabama...you would then face the likes of USC, FLorida, Oklahoma, or Texas. And if you won your second game, you would face one of those teams in the national title game.

If we instituted a playoff, you would actually get a taste of what it feels like to play in a demanding conference where you play quality opponents that test you on a weekly basis. While at least it would be decided on the field, my prediction is that you would NEVER be able to win a national title.

So before you start whining about being passed over for the national title, just keep in mind what you are asking for. As it stands now, the BCS is actually a pretty good setup for you!

CollegeBCS.com
Oklahoma No. 2
Florida's No. 5
Utah No. 61.

Sagarin
Oklahoma No. 8
Florida No. 19
Utah No. 70.

Going undefeated and winning the Sugar Bowl is certainly deserving of a lot of national recognition. But you don't deserve to be national champion for the same reason why Boise State didn't deserve it when they beat Oklahoma, and the same reason why Hawaii would not have deserved it had they beat Georgia, and the same reason that you didn't win it in 2004: Going undefeated doesn't equate to being the best team in the country.

The team who should have the biggest gripe if Oklahoma wins is Texas, who beat Oklahoma on a neutral field.

ANOTHER reason for a Playoff | 8:20 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
You know, I realized one thing today that I have never thought about or read about anywhere else. The "BCS lovers" use the pitiful excuse that a playoff would take away from the tradition of the Bowls. Is that tradition really worth keeping?

The thing I realized is that there are many teams that hardly even try in a bowl game. Many Alabama fans use the excuse that since they didn't get into the championship, they had no motivation to win the game against Utah. If there was a playoff then all those teams that made it would play their hardest!!! How many years do we have even BCS bowls that don't mean ANYTHING!!! Was there even an Orange Bowl this year? This year was one of very few years that maybe more than 2 bowls mean something. Only very passionate fans of college football in general are interested (outside of the fans of the individual teams). If there was a playoff, I would think the majority of college football fans would be watching regardless of whether their team is included because every team in the playoffs would be giving their best.

I agree Utah had a couple close calls, but they didn't lose any. Can Florida say that? Oh, and that loss to Mississippi, it was at home! I think that should've eliminated Florida just for that! USC? They lost badly to OSU! The team that Utah beat! OSU would've won the PAC 10 if their running back hadn't been injured for the Oregon game. Oh, and USC won in the PAC 10, the same conference where the MWC went 6-2! Utah dominated Alabama who was winning Florida until half way through the 4th quarter!

If I were the University of Utah, I would have a trophy ceremoney. I would hang the banner. I would print the t-shirts and hats. I would delcare myself the national champion. It would have as much credibility as the current system. I am dead serious about this. Auburn should have done it. It is one thing to complain. It is another thing to do something about it. Utah should also attempt to schedule Florida home and home and see if they accept. If they don't, Utah should say that Florida is ducking us.
Anonymous | 4:55 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
Also, without a playoffs, it is ALL talk. Utah is #1. I agree. USC is #1. Sure, why not? Florida, yep, they get my vote. Oh, and Texas, sure, that makes sense. Why not? In the end, the only thing that makese sense is a playoff, otherwise, voting has way too much influence on the champion. Until then, let them all be champions.

hit the wrong button, don't know if the first part of my comment made it or not.

to the Florida fans - 31-17 on a hostile field trumps 31-20 on a neutral field any day of the week. And we didn't lose at home.

That said, I'd like to be there when Mack Brown looks his players in their eyes and says he has as much courage to buck the system and back them as Kyle Whittingham does for his players.

And to the zoobs, (not the classy BYU fans, and they are legion, but to the zoobs [classless byu fans]) 53-33-4 all time, 9-6 last 15.
Blue Man | 1:48 p.m. Jan. 9, 2009
I love this!! Thank you, Utah!! Utah fans can now legitimatly yell and complain abut the BCS and the BCS has virtually no reply. Thanks to Utah's undefeated season and dominating win over alabama, criticism of the BCS has reached the highest point I have ever seen.

I bleed Cougar blue and suffered though the last games of the season with the Cougs. But, Utah was a ray of pure light and, for me, salvaged the last part of the season with their brilliant win.

I don't expect the BCS to change much. But the view of the MWC has changed dramatically. Print the T-shirts. I will wear one proudly. Who cares what the BCS money moguls do or the AP voters vote, to me the 2008 Utah Utes are #1.

The ESPN poll vs the BCS is like what the "People's Choice Awards" are to the Academy awards. Although the BCS/Academy may do as they like, people really do KNOW what is going on and WHO really made #1. Utah made a believer out of everyone, and the BCS isn't everyone.
