How is it arrogant to give human beings credit for changing the climate?
I'm not sure where this particular argument comes from, but it's the easiest one to disprove.
What would happen to the earth if the US set off every nuclear weapon it had?
Nuclear winter. That is not arrogance, that is reality.
Human beings have a lot of power. Unfortunately, they often lack intelligence and wisdom, and they misuse the power they are given.

I guess for you sir, ignorance is bliss. Turn a blind eye to it and it will all go away.

There is too Global Warming, it's called Spring. Spring comes every year, about March. Then we have global cooling every year, about September.

Whichever side of the global climate change issue you take, I think everyone can agree that we all ought to be less wasteful and do our part to take care of the planet.
jew | 6:57 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
How long ago did you venture outside of Nephi - there are scientist that contradict one another and there is two sides to the story and if you are saying there is money involved will with what we have witnessed in the past 8 years money didn't want the truth to come out, and money changed rules to accommodate money etc. We have issues in the environment that we all need to be conscience off. Have you not watched the area in the north where the ice shelves are breaking away and melting etc Ask Greenland, Iceland what they are experiencing - get out of Nephi and see the whole world sir
Anonymous | 7:10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
God gave us, including you, intelligence to realise that we can and are affecting global climate. He's going to be pretty cranked that you're blaming him for it.
Timj | 7:08 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Mike:
The global climate does not cool in the fall. It's summer now in the Southern Hemisphere.
Sigh...

Thank you! Finally someone is making a logical point on "Global Warming". Al Gore Sucks!
liberal Larry | 7:17 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
This letter illustrates the need for better science education in our schools. Scientifically illiterate people are easy prey for the half truths and sophistry used to refute accepted, mainstream concepts like evolution and global warming.
Chuck Anziulewicz | 7:17 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
"We get warming on parts of the earth, while we are getting cooling on other parts of the earth. That is just the way the Lord planned it."

BUT OF COURSE! Global warming couldn't POSSIBLY have anything to do with skyrocketing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions or deforestation! It's all perfectly NATURAL, therefore it's the way the LORD wants it to be, therefore WHY WORRY?

It amazes me how quick people are to absolve the human species of ANY responsibility for the environment. Future generations will curse us for our inaction.
Pleasantville | 7:23 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Man is the only animal that poisons its own drinking water, the air that it breathes, and has the ability to turn up the temperature of its own planet.

The "Pleasantville" mentality of doing nothing (Let God take care of it) is destroying the earth.
Hypocrisy | 7:37 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Russel, this is about your 3rd letter on this subject already. Is Nephi really so boring? Every time you seem to miss several great points:

#1 Cleaning up the environment is good. Kinda like how bringing Democracy to Iraq is "good" right? That's what right wingers keep tellin me!
#2 Developing new technology helps us in the future.
#3 Going Green can and will create new jobs.
#4 Finding alternative energies will help break us from oil. We can then lead the world in this aspect instead of being a slave to it.

I guess if you want to continue to be left in the past, you may Russel. It's your choice.
Rocket surgeon | 7:52 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Why do the fools always talk loudest. Russell Bender doesnt understand the science. There may be debate in the scientific community (there isnt really) but it is being done by scientists, not morons in Nephi writing from their unibomber style shack.
@liberal larry and other sheep | 8:00 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Mainstream concepts are not always true larry. A good example is the accepted "truth" that women should take hormone supplements upon entering menopause. Women sure benefitted from the latest science. After three decades of consensus in the medical community we found out that we were causing breast cancer to skyrocket.

The point is that just because it generally accepted does not mean its "true". There are many other examples of this kind of thought. Science is usually wrong before it gets it right. As a scientist, I respect the scientific method but am cautious of science that is politically or financially motivated.

Science is often corrupted by greed. Use your own mind and think critically. Don't believe the press, they do not understand the science behind the concepts. The press is a useful idiot.
Black Knight | 8:02 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Fortunately and finally, many educated people are now recognizing that the global warming fraud is in reality one of the greatest hoaxes ever perpetrated on the human race by big-government liberals and socialists whose major objective is to obtain a greater control over our lives and the economy. Now if only school curricula can be renovated to eliminate this nonsense and, thereby, cease the brainwashing of our children in this matter, perhaps there is still a possibilty of common sense prevaiing.
Roland Kayser | 8:06 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
These "so called scientists" spent 8-10 years getting their PhDs in Climatology, and have spent their entire working lives studying the climate. You read a newspaper article. Thanks, but I'll take their word over yours.
yet again | 8:11 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Oh from simple minds. What is strange is that he keeps rewriting the same simple minded letter and the DN keeps reprinting it. Are the people at the DN also so simple minded that they cannot see it may have different words but otherwise is the exact same simple minded letter over and over again? if he could at least provide some creditable evidence for his claim then maybe there would be something worth printing.

Its not surprising that someone whos globe only consists of Yuba to Salt Lake has absolutely no understanding of global climate change. Just keep listening to Rush, cleaning your gun, and making those tinfoil hats.

Another crazy right-winger trying his best to polarize the country even further than the usual.
Educator | 8:47 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I'm a science instructor - it's my job to stay current on research, especially in areas where there is an important public policy issue involved.

The data are overwhelming and growing rapidly... global temperatures are rising, and rising far faster than any previous period of global climate change. What could cause it? The Sun? No, that's been thoroughly researched. Solar forcings could account for at best 1/4 of what Earth is experiencing. Volcanic outgassing? Nope. Cosmic Rays? Nope. The culprit is human production of CO2, especially in the last century.

THAT'S THE SCIENCE. If you doubt me, try looking at the actual scientific journals publishing peer-reviewed research by climate science professionals.

What boggles my mind is that someone could believe that thousands of the world's best researchers are involved in some kind of conspiracy to fool us into... what? Becoming more aware of our impact on our planet?
Yes arrogant | 8:52 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
A man who thinks a single man or even the accumulated efforts of all men can trump, control or change nature is arrogant.

I'm NOT saying we should do nothing to protect the environment. We should do EVERYTHING we can to protect the environment. It's part of our responsibility as human-beings and part of nature. But if you think you can change nature or control it (by protesting or making a movie) you are just buying a bag of political dogma.

Think about it...
-Ever tried to stop a forest fire. All man's efforts and technology combined usually have nearly zero affect on it until nature cooperates. Then with a switch in the weather, wind direction, humidity, rain storm or snow, and instead of us men strugling to control a 50 foot section of the fire the entire fire is extinguished in minutes (by nature, not man).

-Ever tried to stop or change the direction of a Hurricane? Many men have tried and failed. Nature can do it without even trying. It's just as simple and natural as breathing for nature to control and change these massive events. Yet some insist we can do it and keep trying. But-in-the-end...we-don't-control-nature...Nature-controls-us.
Snow in new parts of the US | 9:14 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Global Warming must cause more snow to fall. Especially in area's that normally don't get snow, CALIFORNIA, OREGON, LOUISANA, LAS VEGAS. this must be what AL Gore and the other Global Warming belivers don't have an answer for. Also why are winter temperatures around the world colder than previously recorded in history. IS THIS A SIDE EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING.
DEFINE Normal | 9:22 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Will one of you Global Warming beleivers please explain what normal weather is. I can go to the Oil Rigs in Alaska and watch them pull Palm trees up from under the ice cap, as well as other items that only survive in tropical habitat. Why are they there??? They have also found the same things in ICELAND ans GREENLAND under the ice. Did they all used to be tropical?? If so what is the normal climate in those parts, Tropical or Frozen?? When AL GORE and others have been asked this their response is to get in their private jets or SUV's and leave. IS THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE WRONG!!!!

"The Lord planned it"
Please please please show me where "The Lord" said he plans climate.
I'm really curious.
What I find so sadly funny is that republican after republican fails to understand the difference between climate and weather.
Frank | 10:01 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
I'm fine with people saying global warming is a myth, just fine, as long as they arent using it as an excuse to not clean up after themselfs.

And as far as leading the world into an age of oil independance, I doubt we'll be the ones to do that. I've been to third world countries that have had alternative fuel vehicles for around a decade now. We're one of the few still struggling with it.
to 9:14 | 10:17 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
"IS THIS A SIDE EFFECT OF GLOBAL WARMING?"
It very well may be. Thanks for showing your lack of understanding on the subject.
@9:14 | 10:15 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Yet again with the simple minded thinking. Actually this is exactly what global warming theories have been predicting would happen for many years. the warming of the oceans causes weather patterns to change which leads to shifts in weather patterns (i.e., snow where they did not have it before, hot weather in places that did not have it before) please step outside your box and actually learn something about how science and our environment works and what global warming experts say before spotting you r nonsense.
re: yes arrogant 8:52 | 10:19 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
"A man who thinks a single man or even the accumulated efforts of all men can trump, control or change nature is arrogant."

Have you ever wondered where that brownish-orange air you are breathing comes from? Can this be "trumped, controlled, or changed?
Anonymous | 10:23 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
If there is even the slightest chance that most scientists are correct and global warming does exist and that it is cause by man, doesnt it make sense to do all we can to prevent it?

Smokers still smoke even though it is killing them, humanity continues to pollute even though it is killing the earth.

It boggles my mind that seemingly intelligent people believe that our climate is controlled by invisible people that live in the sky.

@Educator 8:47

Check your science. Global temperatures have been falling since 1998. 2008 was one of the coolest years on record. China just had its coldest year in 100 years. Snow fell in Baghdad for the first time in all of recorded history. North America has more snow cover this year than in 50 years. The Antarctic has record levels of sea ice. The Arctic ice pack is back to what it was 30 years ago.

Did your computer models predict that?

The narcissis is blooming. It has bloomed since December. I still have two pepper on my plants. I paid $34 dollars to heat my home in December. I noticed poppies are getting ready to bloom soon.

There is more to earth than Utah.
Global Warming..... | 10:53 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Is a big fat lie. And so is Al Gore. End of debate.
Joe | 11:09 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
"It boggles the mind to realize that there are so many otherwise intelligent people who are still promoting global warming."

Otherwise intelligent like Nobel Prize winning scientist Dr. Daniel Kammen? Yup, he must be very naive about such things having won the Nobel Prize and all. Maybe you can set him straight Russell.
Frank | 11:22 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Al Gore MUST be on to something! They gave him the nobel prize instead of that german lady Irena Sendler who smuggled over two thousand of jewish children and infants from nazi designated ghettos and certain death, and had all her limbs broken because of it.

Gore must have put together one heck of a slide show!!!!!!
Anonymous | 11:44 a.m. Jan. 8, 2009
One well known scientist skeptical of global warming stated that "if you are afraid of global warming you should be terrified of global cooling."

More and more scientist have started to come forward to speak out against the obsurdity of the global warming proponents viewpoint. I just hope we all come to our senses before the global warming crowd ruins the world's economy while possibly killing millions with the scare tactics.
G | 12:03 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Global Warming does not necessitate that any one particular year must be warmer than another! It only points out an overall trend where an average of recent years are found to be significantly warmer than averages of previous. You have to compare average temperatures of this decade with average temperatures of other past decades over hundreds of years. The data suggests that the warming trend exists, Al gore or no Al gore.

Having said that, while it is true that something extreme (like nuclear weapons) will affect world climates, the evidence is far less convincing that people are the main (much less, ONLY) cause of global warming. The argument is even LESS convincing that, if we are causing it, there is anything we can do to stop it short of eliminating all energy use in the world. Gore might as well be complaining that people breathe.

However, it is still common sense to do everything in our power to improve our environment. Even if we cannot affect global warming, we can still make the air easier to breath. We can extend availability of natural resources for our descendants. We can cut energy costs. The list goes on.
wallofvoodoo | 12:23 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
Yes god makes the earth warmer. That makes perfect sense.
Re: G | 12:31 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
So what you're saying is that we have to find the piece of data that supports an absurd argument, and conveniently disregard the rest of the data.
falcon's beak | 12:52 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
NASA space thermometers indicate a cooling trend since 1979. Arctic sea ice has an increase of 270,000 sq miles. That is the size of Texas. 6 inches of snow east of LA. 47 degrees in Las Vegas a record low. Anchorage had its coolest summer in many years. Switzerland had snowfalls such that rail and roads were closed. 120 record snowfalls this year and 60 some record low temps. One explanation is that evaporation from the sea caused cloud cover which led to temporary coolness. Some feel it is a sunspot phenomenon. Oh and yes, glaciers are not getting smaller they are increasing in size. I am still all for wind and other alternatives. I drove through Wyoming and Colorado driving to Texas and saw hundreds of 1-2 megawatt wind turbines. 1 MW takes care of over 300 homes. I think the electric car should be our goal. In the meantime let's do everything, drill, put in geothermal plants, transmission lines, solar, etc.

Too arrogant @ 10:19 a.m | 1:10 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
You totaly misconstrued my point with your apples-to-oranges comparison.

I said man can't CONTROL nature (Climate, Wind, Hurricanes, Tornados, Earth Quakes, Floods, etc) NOT that man has no impact on the planet!

I didn't say we can't play a roll (pollution, etc). Of course man can pollute. Everything that exists on earth causes some pollution (man included). But to leap from "Man can pollute" too... "Man can control nature" (Climate, etc) is a pretty big leap and in my opinion ARROGANT. Of course we have an impact on nature, we are part of nature, but that doesn't mean we control it.

I also said we all need to do EVERYTHING we can to minimise our impact on the planet (including pollution)... but to think we can control nature and change the climate at will is obsurd.

It's likely the climate will continue to warm/cool as it has forever even if we do everything the enviro-nazis demanded.

If the wind is going to blow, it's going to blow whether we like it or not. If the climate is going to warm, it's going to warm. If the earth shakes, it's going to shake, like it or not.

Nature-doesn't-bow-to-man's-will-or-political-pressure.

you do not know if the oceans warming is caused by global warming then claim I do not understand the issue? really? Why do I get this strange feeling this is a pointless discussion?
@ global warming.... | 1:55 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
thanks for ending the debate for us, with such sound reasoning I see no point in ever discussing anything again we will just come to you when we need sound reasoned answers..... Yes this is sarcasm.
