Utah football 1-0 vs the SEC (Alabama)

Its official we own the SEC!

GO UTES!!

Wow, go Utes, I knew Coach Boylen could get this kind of game out of you.
Love it.
Interesting | 9:32 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Sounds like Boylens SOS is paying off. At 10-5, already Utah's record looks more glossy then the Y.

To Andrewute1:

Yeah but you guys can't even beat Southern Baptist or Idaho State??

TSK TSK TSK

Beat the not so good teams first in order to convince me!

Its a long season Anonymous (10:06) ... the key is to improve. I will take early weak losses for strong wins as the season goes on - any day!

To: andrewute1 | 10:24 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009

Forget PAC-10, Utah should move to SEC...:)
Anonymous | 10:25 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
congrats to Boylen and the Utes. They are showing toughness and improving. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
AZ ST and Wake | 11:08 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
would eat UT for lunch. The Zags were clearly overrated and LSU hadn't played anyone getting that 12-1 record.

Go BYU
Re: AZ ST et al | 11:21 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Why don't we see what byU can do in 2 weeks before you go spouting off. They haven't proven anything this year either. If Rose would dare play the Ags in the Spectrum, they'd likely have a 3rd loss. So, what's your signature win? Probably the win over Utah State. I'm not saying that's not a good win, but don't be so brazenly pompous all the time. Both teams have much to prove as we enter conference schedules.
Two Words | 11:23 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Southern Bapist!
LSU | 11:50 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Is not a very good team. They looked horrible.
byu fans | 12:08 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
yes, Utah has had some very bad losses but it can not be denied that they have put that behind them and have built tremendous momentum going into MTN West play. To all the Y fans out there you have a solid club but you need to beat somebody before you open your mouth and no Utah State does not count if you are playing them away from the Spectrum.
LSU and Gonzaga..... | 12:15 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Not that big of a deal.
AZ st? | 12:59 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
California barely beat utah on a last second shot. Then cal beat az state. im sure utah would do fine against either team..
RE: AZ ST and Wake | 1:53 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
"would eat UT for lunch. The Zags were clearly overrated and LSU hadn't played anyone getting that 12-1 record.
Go BYU"

Land of IF and fairy tale's again?

It seems like BYU fans are repeating the IF game like their Quest for Perfection football season all over again.

Here's a fact like your football team your basketball can NOT beat ranked teams.

I won't even embarrass you with ranked teams Utah programs have beaten this year.

DISCLAIMER: The statements above are truth, not opinion. If you disagree then come back with facts not fairytale analysis of what IFs.

I'll bet these are the ewets that were calling for Hill to fire Boylen just two weeks ago and asking Whits head 2 years ago. Watch the stands go empty next year in both sports. You guys are strictly fair weather fans.
Texas Ute | 6:40 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Way to play strong. Take one game at a time and get better each game. The Utes don't need to talk trash . . . don't play BYU in the paper . . . they will play BYU soon enough. Let BYU do the talking, heck, let them put it on a t-shirt, that seemed to work well enough for us in the past.

Go Utes!
RE: byu fans | 12:08 a.m. Jan. 7 | 6:55 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
LOL Utah state doesn't count unless you play them at the Spectrum? Hmmm, I always thought a good team can win anywhere, I guess I was mistaken. BTW losing to SW Baptist ISU and USU is going to hurt come tournament time. That is if you show for the conference games and the tourney. LSU has beat such great teams as Jackson State, Alcorn State, Northwestern State, Cenetary, Troy, Cal State Fullerton, Grambling, Nicholls State, McNeese State, Washington State, Louisiana Laffeyette and SE Louisiana. Wow, definitely sounds like they have played the best and won....definitely a quality win for the Utes.

RE: AZ ST and Wake | 1:53 a.m.

Are we talking basketball since both football programs are done for this year? Great job to your football team but claiming the basketball already after an 18 point loss to Okie and BYU loses by seven and is within 3 or 4 with a minute to play? Or ASU game where a basket is ruled late and thus a loss for the Cougars. Oh, the gonzaga win, the lost 3 of 4. even to Portland State. Maybe they aren't that top 25 team they started as?
Chokers | 7:06 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
The Y in big games (ASU and Wake Forest) choke down the stretch because they don't have go to big guy. Utes down the stretch against good teams (Gonzaga and LSU) don't choke because they have the MAN Neville in the middle. Utes will own the Y in basketball just as they do in football.
I was there last night... | 7:13 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
and the Utes played great! Coach B definitely has them headed in the right direction.
SCR | 7:55 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Good win, but lots of work left. In order to win consistently in the conference the Utes need to work on better shot selection -- they seem to be wasting too many possessions with less than good shots.

Peaking at the right time | 8:51 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
It's nice to see the Utes coming together, finally. But to call LSU a quality opponent is not accurate. I don't care if they were 12-1, or their history, they are not very good and looked awful.
Big Al | 9:09 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I'm a true Cougar-lover and have nothing but kudos for the Utes for their tremendous football season and total beat-down of the Tide. Utah also has a great basketball tradition, and appears to be on the way to a very good season this year. I must say that most of you Freshmen out there from Utah and BYU are putting the rest of us to sleep with your continuing infantile banter. All these "My dad can beat up your dad" comments are so boring! But I suppose you are keeping one stereotype alive and well--after reading these posts there is no question that the moronic sports fan with the IQ of a flea is alive and well in the state of Utah.

Football Utes will end up #3 in the BCS (will jump ahead of Texas) but will unfortunately not overcome USC and the winner of Florida/Oklahoma. Basketball Utes will split this year with BYU, each winning their home game. OK all your freshmen, you can wake up now and get back to what you do best.
Riley | 9:10 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
All of the BYU posters should be banned from posting comments on basketball stories until they win a Tournament Game. It has almost been 20 years since BYU last won a Tourny Game.
Nice wins | 9:14 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
but, let's not get too carried away.

LSU is not a very good team; despite their 12-2 record, the Tigers haven't beaten ANYBODY!

Gonzaga is slipping fast; the Bulldogs have lost 4 of their last 5, including 70-77 to Portland State; will probably lose again tonight; and are no longer ranked.

Ole Miss is 9-5, but was destroyed by New Mexico 103-70 and Southern Miss 78-59.

Oregon is 6-8 with losses to Oakland, San Diego (not State) and St. Mary's.

Utah's best win so far may be over Wyoming 11-4, since that's a conference win.
re: Riley | 9:24 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
All of the Utah posters should be banned from posting comments on basketball stories until Utah learns how to play basketball again. Utah hasn't had a winning record in MWC play since 2004-2005.

2007-2008 7-9 (6th place)
2006-2007 6-10 (7th place)
2005-2006 6-10 (6th place)
Jessica | 9:34 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
To re: Riley,

I agree. BYU is really bringing the MWC reputation down. There is no other team in the NCAA that has a longer drought in the Tournament than BYU. You see all of these years below? They are years that BYU has gone without winning a singel Tourny Game (Ouch!):

1992
1993
1994
1995
1996
1997
1998
1999
2000
2001
2002
2003
2004
2005
2006
2007
2008
Nevill & Plaistad | 9:38 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Both have had decent college careers but I guarantee all you fans, that before you start talking next level trash neither one will ever siut up for an NBA team. Just good college players that made it because of their size, nothing more.
My2Cents | 9:40 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
The only thing that matters as far as national respect are Tournament victories. BYU fans and Utah fans should be cheering each other on to do well in the Tournament. Tournament victories help our conference gain the respect that it so desperately needs. Let's support each other to do well in the Tournament this year. BYU and Utah victories in the Tournament will help each other's reputations and the MWC reputation.
re: Jessica | 9:44 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
at least BYU still knows how to get to the tournament; something Utah has obviously forgotten.

Luckily, a new post season tournament was created for teams like Utah, the CBI (Church Basketball Invitational).
Hilarious | 10:18 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
@ RE: byu fans 12:08 a.m. Jan. 7:

Your logic says that since LSU hasn't beat anybody, they're a poor team and therefore can't be considered a good win for the Utes.

Let's take a look at BYU's wins: Long Beach St., Pepperdine, North Florida, Rice, Cal Poly, Idaho St., Weber St., Utah St., Boise St., Portland and Tulsa.

According to your logic then, we must consider BYU a poor team/win as well because...well frankly, they haven't beat anybody either. Make sure next time you do your research on your own team before shoot off at any Utes' opponents.
Re:re:Jessica | 10:50 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
BTW. The Utes were members of the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in 2005.

That is a feat BYU has accmoplished once in its history--1918 if I'm not mistaken; er, sorry, make that 1981.
danburtreynolds | 11:32 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Nice win. Boylen said in post game they had to keep turnovers to a minimum and limit offensive rebounds because thats the only way LSU scores. They did it.

Now let's keep the momentum going for conference play.

As always, Boylen believer and proud of it.
danburtreynolds | 11:37 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
To anonymous at 10:06

If it were you the Utes had to convince maybe I would worry about your post, however, since I assume you are not on the NCAA selection committee, I don't really care what you think. An RPI of 21 and a 20 win season definitely attainable will speak for itself to those who's opinions matter.
jpc53 | 11:40 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
The nicest thing about the Utah win is that they scored 91 points yet only made three 3 Pointers on I think eight shots. Boylen's philosphy (? spelling) of going inside first is finally starting to sink in to the players heads.
re: Hilarious | 11:41 a.m. Jan. 7, 2009
apples and oranges comparison

Utah State is 13-1, with their lone loss to BYU and wins over, gasp, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho State (a team Utah lost to)

Boise State is 10-3, with wins over Wyoming, Colorado State, AND Idaho State

Tulsa is 9-5 with a win over Texas A&M 14-1 (the Aggies' only loss; LSU's other loss, besides Utah, was to Texas A&M)

Plus, BYU's only losses were barely, to two Top 25 teams, #4 Wake Forest and #16 Arizona State, in see-saw games that could have gone either way at the end.

Try using some real logic next time; actually LOOK at the teams, games, scores, and not just the records.
TucsonUte | 12:09 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Don't get to excited yet about this win because LSU has played a cupcake schedule to prepare for the SEC season.
2005 | 12:17 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
In 2005, Andrew Bogut also won the John Wooden Award as the Most Outstanding Men's College Basketball Player of the Year. Unfortunately, #6-seed Utah ran into its NCAA tournament nemesis, #2-seed Kentucky in the Sweet 16, and lost 62-52, as usual, when playing the Wildcats.

In 1981, Danny Ainge won the John Wooden Award and led his team to the Elite 8, where #6-seed BYU lost to Ralph Sampson (the ONLY two-time John Wooden Award winner) and the Virginia Cavaliers. BYU beat #11-seed Princeton 60-51, #3-seed UCLA 78-55 and #2-seed Notre Dame 51-50, before losing to #1-seed Virginia 74-60.

Incidentally, #3-seed Utah advanced to the Sweet 16 in 1981, where the Utes lost to #2-seed North Carolina 61-56. There were only 48 teams in the 1981 tournament, so Utah only had to beat #11-seed Northeastern 94-69 to advance to the Sweet 16.

Smell That?
Re: Woo Hoo | 2:21 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Yes I do smell the FEAR IN PROVO and I live in Arizona!!!!! We took thier beloved quest and the realization that Utah Football is here to stay is setting in. Additionaly, the down years of Utah basketball appear to be rapidly diminishing and the reality that Utah basketball is going to make a very strong comeback has slapped the coogies in the face!!!! Go Utes!!!!!
UNLV Fan | 2:30 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Here is a couple of facts that should make all the BYU fans scurry for cover:

BYU Football 1-21 against top 25 ranked teams.

BYU Basketball hasn't won a Tournament game since 1992.

Hey BYU fans, tell me what you think about the above statistics. I bet I will not get one intelligent response.
Arizona Fan in Salt Lake | 2:43 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
I would just like to say to all of the BYU fans, thank you for the most enjoyable crushing defeat of the Vegas Bowl that I have ever seen.

My family and I loved every minute of it.

I don't think BYU's chances are very good against Oklahoma. BYU is only 1-21 when going against ranked teams. Not very good.
Hilarious | 2:45 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
@ re: Hilarious | 11:41 a.m.

My logic is flawed? Let's see in your breakdown of records for Utah St. and Boise St. you mock the fact that they both beat Idaho St. (one of Utah's embarrasing loss), but fail to mention another one of the Aggies' and Broncos' notable wins (Wyoming) just got blown out at the Huntsman Center. You also mention one of Boise's impressive wins was against a 5-10 Colorado St. team. Come on man! If I have to be held accountable for my flawed logic then hold yourself accountable as well.

Make fun of the Utes' embarrassing losses all you want. They deserve it. But when they notch some notable wins against teams from traditionally elite conferences (Oregon, Gonzaga, LSU) don't try and put them in the same category as Southwest baptist and Idaho St. you just make yourself look like an igonorant Utah hater. And save the "could have gone either way" rhetoric when discussing BYU's losses. If we use that logic for every game then Utah would be 14-1.
Hilarious | 3:04 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Yes I know Gonzaga is not from an elite conference, but they are highly regarded nationally. That was merely a mistake on my part to include them in the conference discussion, so hold off the assaults on my Bball IQ.
to: Jessica | 3:15 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
And here are the years that Utah didn't go to the ncaa tourney and byu did:

2006
2007

So what's your point? Is it better to go and try to win or not be invited at all?
Tarheel Ute | 3:16 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
After watching the last several games that BYU and Utah have played, the edge goes to BYU, but by a far lesser margin than last year and potentially even on home floors.

There early Utah losses this year are understandable, just like losses in pre-season play. But conference play will be interesting. Assuming anything about the top teams BYU, UNLV, Utah, SDSU will be a risky.

I do not see any team running the table.
The Shamwow Guy | 3:56 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
To to:Jessica,

It is better to get invited an win (at least one game). BYU hasn't done this in almost 20 years. Utah has done it time after time, after time, after time, after time (did I mention time after time?).
Ernest T. Bass | 4:23 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
byu is 50-113 all time against top 25 competition. That is only a 30% winning percentage.
Not good.
The tourny win percentage is even worse.
Not sure why byu fans feel the need to comment.
No doubt Utah has a much better basketball tradition and program.
Just like the football programs.
cougars never will | 5:24 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
ANY SPORT! BYU NEVER WINS BIG GAMES! THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UTAH AND BYU IS BIG GAMES. UTAH EXCELS, BYU RUNS AND HIDES. IT IS SO SAD TO SEE THE COUGS IN A MEANINGFUL GAME, THEY NEVER WIN! LOOK BACK AS FAR AS YOU CAN, IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN. ATLEAST NOT IN THE LAST 30 YEARS!
