I'll take Deron over Chris Paul any day, too! He is perfect for the Jazz
and their system. I am not denying Paul's talent or ability, I am simply
stating I am happy with who and what we have. Good luck tonight! Go Deron and

The funny thing about this article is that even the writer seems to understand
that this is so old hat and yet--(surprise) doesn't seem to be able to come
up with anything better. Lets face it folks; sports writing in this town (both
rags) is lazy and unimaginative.

Jazz needed a bigger stronger guard to play point.
Both teams got what they wanted.
head to head shows who is really the best overall player but again that is subjective too.pure stats means little as both have the competitive drive it takes to win and the confidence to take the game over in the final minutes when it really counts.
Jazz made the best decision re D-will--I hope they wise up and let LOOZER opt out with his injuries. If he was out for a year with a pulled hamstring-how long will he keep collecting Miller's money behind the bench with knee surgury?

I am sure that Deron and Chris just laugh at all of this nonsense. You can not
compare the two unless they played on the same team. Their styles are totally
different. Paul wouldn't fit in the Jerry system. The Problem with Deron
is he plays in Utah where the media coverage is poor at best. Chris receives a
lot more national coverage so come allstar voting time, he gets the edge.
Doesn't mean that he is better, just better marketed by the media.
Personally I like Paul's game better. But I think the Jazz picked the
right player for their Jerry system.

Deron can take over a game when his teammates are playing lackluster. Like
Stockton, he won't take control of the game from a scoring perspective on
most nights, because that's not his role.
CP's role is as a scorer--that's why he gets all the additional attention.

Fresh off a stunning upset of LA last night in the Staples Center -- Paul had 32
points and 15 assists and West had 40. The Jazz and Deron better have their A
game tonight. By the way, Jazz fans, apparently it's all up to you to get
the games back on KJAZZ if you subscribe to DirecTV -- apparently you need to
make the call because Jazz management can't seem to get the cable company
to the negotiating table. It's the mtn. revisited. GEEZ!

I will wait for an answer...and don't tell me that is not his role. When we LOSE every single game in LA (and they are becoming a place like San Antonio for us to play) I would suggest his role is to help us win there but he NEVER has.

I don't know if anyone else has heard the trade rumors, but the Jazz have
planned to sign Tree Skullz from the 8th ward church ball team. This will
totally give D'Will the advantage over C3PO. Can you imagine our team with
Skullz brining the ball down the court? Hopefully the BCS doesn't keep us
from playing for the Championship!!

CP3.0: Are you kidding? Chris Paul is a pure (pass first) point guard. He leads
the league in assists. His scoring is a product of people leaving him open when
they are afraid of his passing. Coming out of college, the knock on Paul was his
shooting. That is why some thought DWill might be better. Oh, how things change.

Watched 2nd half of the Hornets/Laker game last night on NBATV.
The star treatment that CP3 got, IN LA, even had Kobe shaking his head. It was absolutely UNBELIEVABLE.
CP3 CUPPED/CARRIED the ball almost every single time he went in the lane. The NBA TV commentators themselves mentioned it twice in the 4th quarter alone!!!
One slo-mo replay showed Paul and his hand was literally DIRECTLY under/beneath the ball WHILE HE WAS "DRIBBLING" allowing him to COMPLETELY change direction/travel and get around/beat the defender to make a play.
ADDITIONALLY he was not allowed to be even touched without a foul being called on the defense. Conversely he was allowed to lower his shoulder and directly initiate contact square in the positioned defenders chest and you guessed it..they got the foul. Shown on slo-mo replay.
Yes I know alot of PG's carry the ball SOMETIMES and star players get calls BUT if last nights game is any indication of "treatment"/"protection" cp3 gets every game then he clearly has a MASSIVE ADVANTAGE and is allowed to CHEAT regularly.

Comparisons can't be based on ONE good game Chris Paul had against the
Lakers. Comparisons can't be made on one season. Wait 10-12 years and
we'll have a good idea. Or it's entirely possible that this debate
will never go away.
Comparisons are all based on opinions. For example: Charles Barkley honestly thinks he was a better power forward than Karl Malone!! I feel that Malone is the better player in every aspect of the game and I laugh every time Barkley says he was better... but Chuck is entitled to that opinion.

Evidently you have a hard time with numbers and geography.

Derons game against the Hornets was good but the Hornets certainly were not even in the ballpark of what LA was or is in terms of the elite teams in the NBA.

I have to bitterly disagree with you. I spoke to Ronnie Hardvarker who is in
charge of Basketball Operations for the stake and the only way they will release
TrEe SkUlLz is if Cpt. Ron-Jon from the BCS will opt out of his contract.
Therefore David Benoit and Tree Skullz will be able to fit into the salary cap
and take the force from C3PO. But until then the 8th ward Gribbleers and Montana
Mon-stars wont come to an agreement with Barry H. Miller.

Any comparisons made so far this season are useless anyway. With DW's
injury, and not playing for... how many games? Then coming back too soon, and
playing... er, poorly. What's the point in comparing stats for 2 players
when one has been healthy, playing great ball, and the other has struggled to
come back from an injury?
Oh, and had CP3 come to Utah... much different story....LOL Not sure how he would be 'running' the team, but I am sure he wouldn't be getting the superstar coverage he's enjoying now.

Good post. I was happy that other people started noticing it(finally). He does it every game and never gets called on it. Even the announcers had to call him on it, because it was so blatantly obvious.

I'll answer your question, over the last year the closest he has ever been to that kind of performance was 29pts on 70% shooting, 14 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, and 4 turnovers in the playoffs last year. Not bad, but as always statisticly not quite equal to Paul.
But let me give you a few other numbers that will help with the argument.
Last night chris Paul had 15 assists, the rest of the team had 2.
When Deron did what he did the Jazz had 32 assists as a team.
Last night Paul shot the ball 24 times, or 30% of the teams total shots taken.
When Willimas did it he shot the ball 13 times, or 17% of the time.
One more thing, Basketball is often a game of matchups, and the Lakers are a much tougher matchup for Williams than Paul for one reson, Derrek Fisher. Fisher matches up agaist Williams very well physically AND he spent two years teaching and playing agaist Willimas nearly every day so he knows his tendancies and weaknesses better than anyone. Paul doesn't have to deal with that type of matchup.

DUH!!! Your point would actually matter if they awarded an NBA championship
based on head to head matchups. Last time I checked what matters is if you can
beat an ELITE team of the Lakers caliber on their home floor.

If you guys think that New Orleans is somehow a big media market then
you've gotta be joking. Salt Lake and New Orleans are both small cities,
tiny media markets (especially since Katrina), and Paul gets the type of
exposure that he does because his game is simply on a different level than Deron
Williams. The one and only thing that you can say in D-Will's defense is
the head-to-head games, which I will admit, the Jazz have owned. This, however,
will not be the case this year as the Jazz are not really playoff contenders
this year (due to injuries and other things).
I'm sure you guys will say that you would rather have D-Will all the way home, but go ahead and ask a fan of any other team in the NBA who they'd rather have and see what they say...thought so.
I'll be in ESA tonight watching my playoff contender team take it to the Jazz for the first time this year.

The extent that CP3 vs. other players is allowed to cheat ie. carrying the ball/traveling etc .and the gross protection by the refs....I mean it is almost like Bonds taking steroids--its clearly an unfair advantage that Paul enjoys against any other PG in the league.
If the playing field actually were level I seriously doubt there would be the disparity in his stats vs other PG's.

As Jazz fans we can all be proud of once having the best pure point guard of
all-time, John Stockton. At that time, no-one could doubt that fact. He led the
league in assists every year by a mile. He was defensively immense, pulling off
steal after steal. And of course he (with the help of the Mailman) got the Jazz
to the Finals like it was expected. We all know what a GREAT PG looks like!
NOW... my point is arguing that DWill is as good as CP3, is like someone arguing that John Starks was as good as Stockton. (An arguement ive had with many Knicks fans). As much as i like DWill and think he's the best player on our roster, HE IS NOT AS GOOD AS CHRIS PAUL. Chris Paul is porbably the MVP of the league and DWill will never be. CP3 doesn't get ridiculous calls more than any other star, including
Williams. A Jazz messageboard is probably the only place in the US where you
could find a bunch of people complaining about this. DWill is great, but you all
might as well just admit that you missed out big on Paul.

One thing this also illuminates since you mention cp3 dominates the ball so much. It makes his low turnover rate that much more impressive especially in comparison to Deron who, as you point out, has the ball in his hands much less but still has more turnovers.

You are out of your mind. All i know is that Craig Stadler threw a hammer dunk
hole in one in the WaterBerry Open in Fillmore. Too bad the abmoniable-sand man
came out and took Adam Keefe hostage on the 18th hole. Who is going to stop Phil
McGriddle from driving to bukkett tonight. Hopefully grizzley can come through

objectively watch the Jazz game vs. Lakers last week and then watch Hornets vs.
Lakers last night and then examine the calls that Paul gets (+non calls) and

NBA TV announcers are not writing on the message boards here today. Neither was the ESPN analyst that last year wrote about the bogus assists that Paul gets added to his totals on a routine basis.

NBA TV announcers are not writing on the message boards here today. Neither was the ESPN analyst that last year wrote about the bogus assists that Paul gets added to his totals on a routine basis.
No....none of this was invented here on the message board but rather comes from national basketball analysts and commentators observing and saying it is happening.

This garbage of Williams taking over a game when needed, like Stockton did is
garbage. If they were so great why did the Jazz loose games?
A team is only as good as the members that make it up. Unfortunately, this year the Jazz lack of talent that will step up is showing big time.
The Jazz have one player Williams and a group with talent that do not come night in, night out ready to use that talent. That is why they are 20 and 15 and will not make the playoffs this year.

You are absolutely right about the turnovers.
When Williams is healthy he and Pauls numbers are almost identical in every category, in some Williams has a slight advatage (FG%, 3pt%) in some Paul has a slight advantage (REB, ASST), but there are two categories that really set Paul apart from Williams statisticaly. They are Turnovers and Steals. Paul is significantly better than William in those two areas and that is why he is League MVP calliber and Williams is only All-Star calliber.
Simmons comparing of Williams/Paul to Pearl Jam/STP is a stupid comparison, unless you are making the comparison in 1996. The reason Pearl Jam is so much better than STP is not because the quality of their music is that much better than STP's, it is because they have been consistently making quality music for 20 years while STP couldn't even make it 10.
That is going to be the real determining factor of greatness when this is all said and done, who has the longevity to break records, and who wins championships, everything else is just fodder to fill news articles and discussion boards.

I almost don't even need to respond to this, because you said it in your own post. Yes, New Orleans and Salt lake are both small cities. But to say that they get the same media coverage is ridiculous. The funniest thing you said was "tiny media markets (especially since Katrina)." Are you kidding? Did you even watch a single game that year on TNT/ESPN? The entire year all they talked about was New Orleans/Katrina. Chris Paul was on a bunch of commercials in support for Katrina victims as well. So you can keep pretending it was just because of his "vastly superior skills" that got him the coverage, when in all actuality thats not close to being true.

This is Tree Skullz, I appreciate the support everyone is showing. Jazz fans
rule and Hornets fans just don't know what they re missing. If I become
coach, I will make Adam Keefe and 00 tag my assistant coaches. We will win the
superbowl and bring the trophey to the town of Lehi. Please send a letter to
the Attorney General to file a case for me to run the Jazz. Once again friends

Let's see, who has gone further in the playoffs? Who has won more
head-to-head competitions? If you think about the makeup of the two teams, the
Jazz absolutely picked the right player. Deron's a better outside shooter
than Paul (though, he's improved markedly from when he was drafted). Paul
has the benefit of playing with an ace 17-foot jump shooter (West) and a host of
marksman 3-point shooters (Peja, MoPete, Posey, Butler). Before acquiring
Ashton, the Jazz had no bombers outside of their center. Plus, their team
strategy is to move the ball. Kirilenko is a great passer. Different team,
different makeup. Paul wouldn't be putting up the same numbers in Utah as
he is in NO. Teams would just pack it in on him and force him to shoot jumpers
all day.

Barkley was as good as Malone on offense, but at 6'6" he was WAY
undersized at that position and we all know how great Malone was defensively.
This is what set him apart from most other power forwards. His strength allowed
him to guard 7 footers. I remember he used to shut down Robinson every time the
Jazz played SA.
