S.L. Council mulls clubs in residential areas

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area near a neighborhood tavern, and it has not been a positive. Drivers leaving there are more reckless, a greater police presence it required nearby, and it has contributed to making this area one of the city's least safe and least attractive. A man was shot and killed in the parking lot a couple of months ago--in one of the country's top 20 safest cities. This, and any, tavern indicates a lack of care for the neighboring vicinity.

I think we should have more taverns close to residential areas. It allows for neighbors to gather and meet with each other. Many other countries have taverns in residential areas and it works out very well and it reduces driving after haveing a social night with your neighbors. The only difference is that these local taverns all close at 10pm instead of 3am which is better and less likely to bother anyone. The best alternative to cut down the problem with local taverns is to make them close by 10pm. It's family friendly and a worth while endeavor for the community. If a tavern is within a walking distance of residential area then their hours of operation restricted. A 10pm curfew should be something everyone can live with and reduce the problems of driving and drinking. Anyone wanting an all night pub would be restricted to commercial zoning. This kind of limited curfew could also be applied to yard parties where they tend to get out of control.

It seems there is never enough done to create a whimsy of fear and fret on society for having a private club around. Gregory made the comment about San Francisco and their neighborhood bar but feels a comparison of a San Francisco neighborhood to the Marmalade district of SLC is a fair comparison. There is probably 10 time the amount of people in SF than SL. The area of SLC we are talking about is swarming with Polygamists that the city or state does nothing about but we will resist from allowing a Private club to open for business based on fear. I think people should stop fearing and start living. It doesn't mean you have to drink. It mean we can allow people to make their own decisions by educating and enforcing. Good heavens, the police already drive by that club 20 times a night and there is not problem.

I think "Never Enough" is confusing Andy's Place with Jam in the Marmalade. Andy's Place is on 3rd South and 5th East and I'm pretty sure that area is not "swarming with polygamists". With all the apartment buildings and condos around it, it is mostly couples and singles and not too many kids, not a bad location for a neighborhood bar in SLC.

Lets be honest here. The reason this club has had so much trouble getting licensed is that it's a gay bar. When it was an old biker bar there was plenty of booze flowing...out of the exact same building.

People are worried about "the kids"? Good Mormon answer....put fear into people about children so they seem a righteous cause. Bottom line, people drink...some of them would rather walk to the neighborhood bar instead of drive across town. Wow are they evil!!!!

I happen to live in the downtown Salt Lake area on 3rd & 3rd, right up the street from the Utah State Wine Store, and right across the street from the Gourmandise Bakery.

Since we're on the subject, would it be too much to ask lawmakers on capitol hill to have some neighborhood liquor stores in the downtown area?

I'm so sick and tired of having to make the mile trek, on foot, up to the Avenues store or over to the one on 400 S. 200 W. to get a fifth of Jack.

Why can't I just walk across the street to get something, without having to get in a car or a two-wheeled Vespa scooter for that matter? C'mon, folks! It shouldn't be that hard to figure it out.
