UTAH #1 | 2:19 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
13-0. Undefeated is enough explanation, no computer formula necessary. Beat Pac10,Big10 and SEC (Bama was ranked #1 for 5 weeks). Also, please note Cougars scored more on us than Bama! Maybe the MWC deserves an automatic bid if we keep the BCS....
Utes Are National Champs | 2:27 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
After the BCS system crowns FL or OK they need to add an asterisk to their championship after all the ONLY undefeated team in the nation is Utah.
Anonymous | 2:53 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Congratulatios Utah! You have helped make the case that these BCS conferences are Oooovvvveeeerrrr-raaattteed. If we insist to crown a National Champion in Football, it must be settled on the field. The current system in place is a joke. There is plenty of money to go around, let's figure out a system that works to preserve the Bowls and take the top 4 teams after the bowl and playoff the National Chammpionship on the field (And end this argument of taking away from class time, Paleeeeese!)

With that said, you wouldn't have a chance against USC or Texas. So, a share of the national Championship is out of the question. But, congratulations on an un-defeated season to remember.

Congratulations Utes! It was a blast watching your season (except.. one game) Last night I found myself cheering for you as much as I ever do my 'Cougs. Watching you beat a 'Bama team in a game none of the 'experts' saw coming was great! Florida makes it to the uh.. hum.. "Championship" game by beating who? 'Bama. Well so did you! And you're undefeated and Florida isn't. Do you deserve a shot at #1? Of course.
FORMER BYU fan.. | 4:03 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Enough said... The Utes have proven they are the better team. BYU ended up disappoining me big time this year! I have never been a huge fan of either orginization, but would HAVE called myself a BYU fan, I suppose . From this day on, I bleed red. GO UTES!
Re: Hahahaha, You are kidding ri | 4:32 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Dont forget about all those powerhouses that Alabama beat:
Tulane (2-10), Western Kentucky (2-10) , Arkansas State (6-6).
cindy | 5:23 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
the BCS system that favors certain conferences has proven that it doesn't work! They should be excited to get more great competition, especially from the West. Great competition = great games. What are they afraid of?
sec | 7:26 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utah made a good case to be #1.
And a better case for a play-off system.
congratulations

It's obvious the Ute's are #1 in the NCAA. Too bad the BCS has gone the way of our government...everythings for sale, zero integrety, everyone's bought. The BCS is a joke, I hope the powers that be will name the #1 team in the country the "#1 team in the country."

Way to go Utah! You guys were great. I am so proud to be graduate from Utah. I've polished up my license plate frame "U of U Alumni."

Come grass roots people...let's voice our opinions and help show that Utah is #1.
dlema71 | 7:59 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utes definately are the number 1 team in the nation. Good job Utah!!!
re: anonymous | 7:59 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
incredible!!!! we just went through this. do you have selective memory? HELLO!!!! nobody outside of utah gave the Utes a chance, and now you are repeating the same BcS by stating that Utah would never have a chance against florida, usc, texas, or ou.
Ute Man | 10:28 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
USC, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, take your pick, Utah could've played with, and beat any of these teams!

The BCS teams, and their fans give themselves too much credit! Newsflash, you're not that good!

Utah couldn't play with USC? Well apparently OSU can, right? Utah can't play with Texas? Well apparently Texas Tech can, right? And on, and on, and on! Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, the same old BCS merry go round talk that they give us year in and year out! Correction, Utah CAN play with you guys! You give yourselves too much credit!

All of the so called "Major" conferences are OVER-RATED! As is Notre Dame!

BCS, fix your self, let everyone in, or get to steppin'! Your days are numbered!
BamBam | 10:31 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Go Gators, Go Utes, Go USC, Go Texas to an underground playoff system. Put the games on YouTube to not infringe on anybodies TV contracts. Any one of these teams has a clear bid on the real common sense national title for #1 in the nation. The Utes were outstanding in there game against Alabama. Alabama didn't have anything to win or lose, the Tides pride was broke when Tebow & co. rolled over it. The only way to make any sense of the whole debacle is to have these four teams mentioned above in a final four. We all know we could argue about who should be and who should not be for eons. Thanks for reading now lets change America by doing something about it.
lets be KEEP IT REAL... | 9:58 a.m. Jan. 4, 2009
People, wether you're a Ute fan or not...the Utah team that I saw on friday night, could have easily beat any team (USC, Florida,Texas) that are left in the "BCS" hands down!...note: didn't list Okalahoma, "they don't deserve to be there...Utah is the true National Champion in the eyes of many Americans...keep it real!

I know it's been said by many BYU fans already, but I have to add my congratulations. I watched the whole game (which is hard to do where I live because of the ridiculous MWC television contract) and was thoroughly impressed at how good Utah is. Every argument made for BYU in '84, up to and including Barry Switzer's profound idiocy being injected into the debate, can be made by Utah today. Way to represent the MWC, Utah, and you have my vote for #1!
Bama Fan | 10:13 a.m. Jan. 5, 2009
Way to go Utes. You represented your conference really well. Maybe some day the WAC will have a aout bid.
acc | 3:28 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
I AM AN ACC FAN I WOULD LIKE YOU TO BE NUMBER 1 BUT FLORIDA AND OK ARE TOP TEAMS NOT YOU AND SO THEREFORE OK OR FLORIDA ARE THE TRUE CHAMPS!
Let's keep this real | 3:43 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
beating Alabama was one thing - beating USC or Florida quite another. Actually, Texas Tech would have been a problem for the U too. Taking nothing away from the U because beating Alabama was a great accomplishment , beating teams like UCS that have both power and speed would be quite another. Alabama was a tough team that simply didn't match up well with Utah's speed. I'm thinking that UCS would have the defensive speed of TCU and the offensive power that Utah had not seen all year long. Same with Florida.
not convinced | 3:53 p.m. Jan. 5, 2009
Utah would not be undefeated with Alabama's schedule. You can throw in USC's schedule as well as a dozen other teams from the SWC or PAC10. This is a simple fact.
Anne | 10:20 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
I think it is funny that before Alabama and Utah played, everyone was saying how tough Alabama was, how they were going to roll over the Utes, and how much stronger and faster they were.

Now that Alabama lost, all I hear is that Alabama isn't really that good, that they are no Florida or Texas.

Too funny.
True Blue | 10:36 a.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Sorry to all the Yewt fans, but when the #6 team beats the #4 team, that doesn't equal "#1". It is #4 at best. Keep dreaming. - Realistically, you will be lucky to get #3 in the country.

But keep making yourseves look silly by pleading your case for #1.

expalin to me why | 2:43 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
teams like oklahoma, florida, usc, and texas dont schedule teams like Utah, BYU, TCU, and Boise on a consistent basis for their preseason games?
Once every couple of years for each of them is not doing either side justice. I know for a fact that the Utah's BYU's TCU's and BSU's would love to play against a "top opponent" every year in preseason play, so why dont those top teams take the challenge. If they are as good as some make them out to be it should be an easy win.... right?
Best team... | 3:35 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Being the best team in the nation is not about having the best athletes. It's about getting up for every game every week and not taking one week off (USC, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida). Are Utah's athletes up to the level of other big schools? They don't get the same number of "stars" as the other schools players if that answers the question but that's not what football is about. Notre Dame has had a top 10 if not a top 5 recruiting class each of the last few years so they have the athletes, but what was there record again? Athletes don't win games, teams do.

Utah is the best TEAM in the country being that they did it week in and week out. That is what makes a national champion. Their backs were against the wall just like USC against Oregon State and they did what they had to do like USC couldn't. UTAH MAN SIR!

GO UTES!!!

2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!

13-0!!!
Rational Thinker (and Ute fan) | 8:42 p.m. Jan. 6, 2009
Way to go Utes! Regardless of whether the Utes are actually granted the #1 spot or not, they had a great season. Many of us will consider them #1 regardless.

Unfortunately, the bottom line is, we'll never know how Utah would match up to a Florida or Texas unless things change and a playoff series is introduced. And let's face it, we'll never know how some teams would match up with others no matter what -- some teams will NEVER get a chance to play others. Just look at how the NFL is structured to draw that conclusion.

There would be a lot more excitement, fans (and MONEY) surrounding the championship bowl game if it were a real "super bowl" determined from a playoff series. No more speculation about supposed champions. What school doesn't want to be called the "Undisputed Champion"?

Let's quit the figure skating. Football is a real sport that deserves a real winner.
Robert | 10:49 p.m. Jan. 7, 2009
Are you guys kidding me? If you watched the utah bama game it was obvious that bama was not excited about the game at all. They came in without their best player and played flat. Comparing scores between that game and the sec championship game is a joke. Florida was playing without its best player against a healthy and motivated tide team. If you watched that game you know florida had the ball inside the 20 with time and time outs left and could have easily added a touchdown or field goal. Be happy you got to pull an upset on an unsuspecting team and enjoy your undefeated season. However, the winner ot the national championship game will and should hold both titles. Your schedule does not compare to Florida and Oklahoma's and that is why you are not in the game.
A skeptical Florida fan... | 1:24 p.m. Jan. 8, 2009
The argument that "schedules do not compare" between MWC teams and SEC teams is nonsense, and how many times can the argument be made that the losing team "was not excited about the game" or "didn't want to be there"? Until the BCS rules are changed, no one will ever be able to agree on who deserves the title. There would be no argument about it if a fair playoff system determined a winner. Sure, Florida might be the team to come out on top, but at least we would know with certainty they deserve it. THEY EARNED IT!

It's rediculous that teams inside the "exclusive BCS club" automatically get the benefit of the doubt and that when one of those teams loses to a "non-BCS club" team, they can dismiss it because it "didn't really matter to them" or "it wasn't a game that mattered". That's just another reason why this nonsense needs to change. Every game should matter -- ESPECIALLY A BOWL GAME ON NATIONAL TV -- and at some point, these teams will be out of excuses when they can't defeat these excluded conference teams like the Utes.

I'm looking forward to the coming college football overhaul.
dissagree and congrats | 12:03 a.m. Jan. 9, 2009
"Your schedule does not compare to Florida and Oklahoma's and that is why you are not in the game."

Utah doesn't have the OPTION of having Florida or Oklahoma's schedule. A playoff would allow them to be play anybody in the tournament. They could be judged on the turf.

Utah's team and success deserves the attention is it getting.

Congrats to Utah. They rocked this season.
Eric----UTE MAN | 11:08 a.m. July 10, 2009
Utes.....Only undefeated team in the country. You can say "oh they didnt have a hard schedule." But heres the thing...you can't play everyone. So whoever says they aren't champions, your dumb. They won every game on their schedule. No one else did. They put an ass whoopin on a team who was #1 for half the season. They deserve the #1 spot. I dont believe they will be as good this coming up season but Im sticking with em baby. GO UTES!!
