Some respect, and some consideration. Not freely given, but even the stingiest die hard football purest has to be scratching their heads and say.. you know, at which point can we overlook all they have accomplished?
SEC, PAC-10, Big-10, bring 'em on! Utah took on a team from each of those vaunted BCS conferences this year - AND WON! We all know the ACC has nothing to offer (Utes clobbered Pittsburgh in '04), the big East with #16 Cincinnati (who?) was pretty formidable. That leaves the big 12 - didn't Utah destroy Texas A&M in '04?
College football had better get a better system, because everybody knows the real champion this year is the University of Utah - but they won't get the crown.
The Utes showed it's better to be fast and strong than just ... BIG.
Utah's speed was the difference in the game. Their defensive front line was outweighed by an average of more than 45 lbs. But the Utes still stuffed Alabama's vaunted running game and allowed them only 31 yards.
Utes by at least 10. They would be quicker, better coached, focused, and ready. Bama would not and was not.
Hats off to the coaching staff. And yes the coach deserved his pay raise.
PS -- time for the state leg. to pass a referendum announcing to the world that the Utes are number in the nation. After all, who beat them?
Let's see, the Utes have now WON there last eight bowl games and have two undefeated seasons in four years! Why does everyone say they (Utah, BYU and any other non-BCS school) have to do it year in and year out, but Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, etc. don't. Another school that does it year in and year out is Boise State and they still struggle to be ranked in the top 10. Not to mention, by saying two or three teams form the same conference need to do it year in and year out you are automatically making it impossible for them ALL to do it year in and year out, for some one in conference has to lose. Let face it, anytime a human opinion is used for the outcome (i.e. national champion) it is going to be very, very biased. It is just human nature and until we find another way of ranking, we will always have this problem. Even if Utah does it year in and year out.
