Congratulations to Utah on an awesome game! It was a lot of fun to watch. Utah is #1 in my mind.
BIG TIME | 12:16 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
This set the stage very well. Very soon we will get that call to the big time and leave the MWC in our rearview. The Cougs can then once again dominate the conference. See ya Cougs, it was a nice rilvary while it lasted but we are now big time and well you, not so much.
Anti Trust Case | 12:17 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
This definitely demonstrates why this is an anti trust case and Why President Elect Barack Obama wants a National Champion decided by a playoff. Utah is the National Champion this year from a perfect season. The only thing better than this game would be for the Nation to demand that Utah is given the National Championship and the voters make it happen. This would solve the Anti Trust case that should happen if they are not crowned as National Champions!!! Great Job Utes!!!

After watching that performance by Alabama, how the heck did the Cougs get shut out of a BCS bowl. We should have been there. We would have put the yewts performance to shame. Thanks for the ground work utah, now move over and watch the big boys take it from here and show you how a national championship is won.
BamaProud | 12:30 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Utah Utes are #1. The whipping the Utes gave us broke my heart. Utah is the most unbelievable team Ive seen this year. Alabama did this to most of the teams it played this year. Alabama had Florida against the wall. Alabama did not show up last night. I think they expected to easily handle Utah. The Tide was taught a lesson, a dang tough lesson. Utahs defense was as good as any defense in any conference. I know it didnt look like it, but Alabama really is a good team. That makes Utah even better. I think we saw the true National Champion last night. I bet Coach Saban votes the Utes #1. Anyway, Utah humbled the Tide last night, so congratulations

BYU has no business fielding intercollegiate sports teams.

BYU-Idaho dropped 'em and whaddya know, the world didn't end.

Imagine all the missionary work that could be done by returned missionaries who fanned out across the country to play at somewhere besides BYU.

Imagine how much less divided Utah would be if loyalties were not separated along religious lines.

Imagine how many rank and file students could get scholarships with the $25 million give or take that goes to intercollegiate athletics. (And don't tell me that BYU athletics are self-funded. In the case of BYU where everything supports the mission of the school and the Church, it's a distinction without a difference).

Imagine how much more democratic the BYU student body would be without the haves and have nots enabled by high-dollar intercollegiate athletics.

Intercollegiate athletics and the mission of BYU/the Church are inimical.

Does anyone know when the utes arrive back in salt lake?
Ute Fans | 12:43 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Just flew in from NOLA. What an experience. As a long time season ticket holder and someone who has traveled to the last seven bowl games, I want to forever kill the criticism of Utah fans. The Ute fans in NOLA were unbelievable. Considering the current state of the economy and the distance between SLC and NOLA, we represented very well. I could not believe the number of Ute fans in and around the city during the days prior to the game. And despite the greater numbers of Bama fans, our fans never sat down, never stopped making noise. After the game, a sea of Ute fans marched down Poydras in victory. It was a great day and showed how much progress has been made in raising up generations of Ute fans. To my fellow U grads who like to wear blue, come home now - while you can. The U is the best product out there and will be for the foreseeable future.
To: Glenn | 12:44 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
To Glenn:

Everyone football victory is fleeting, but that doesn't mean that it can't or shouldn't be savored. It also doesn't mean that it can't be the steppingstone to greater success in the future.

Hmmm....weak? Alabama was ranked #1 for 5 weeks and was 12-0 at the conclusion of the regular season. Would you tear down Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, or USC if that had been the team that Utah defeated? None of those teams were able to win 12 straight games.

This was a great win. The QB and coordinators may be gone, but this win provides the leverage to hire and recruit outstanding replacements. Let's give Whittingham the chance to see what he can do.

For this season at least, 13-0 is a singular accomplishment. No other team at this level duplicated it. Furthermore, 4 of those wins came against very good teams. Utah has earned respect, and even people like you Glenn, should recognize that.

Hey Glenn | 12:43 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Two things:

1). Scoreboard
2). Remind me of BYU's record against 'overrated' ranked teams. Oh, yeah. 1-21.

Irony of it all...if BYU had NOT won the national championship in 1984, Utah may have been crowned the national champions this year (should be) as the BCS system is partly a throw back to BYU raining on the BCS parade, and if BYU ever pulls off a championship in the future, it will be partly because of what Utah did last night. Thank you Utah--what a game! Nothing like walking into someone's back yard and smashing them right in the mouth. You guys were great! And to every Ute fan who traveled to the game, you guys were great too. It really was a great to see your joy contrasted with the stunned looks of the Bamma boys.

U U U UTAH!!!
Here's to hard work and humility in 2009! The EGO of the Alabama coach lost them the game. The EGO of that coach, the bank execs, the republican party and all others that think they are so superior are learning a hard but valuable lesson as of late. The UTES worked hard and there fans came out in full force...and what a force. I am SO PROUD of Utah! What a way to bring people together and show the country how awesome we really are. Utah is so much more than crazy republicans, gay haters, polygs and Romney lovers. This is RED we can be proud of! UTAH UTAH UTAH!

Congratulations to the Utes. I love BYU, and the Utes are raising the bar. Hopefully BYU will be motivated to raise their game even more. I also HATE, no ABHOR, the BCS (anyone who doesn't is a FOOL). So I am glad to see the Utes stake a LEGITIMATE claim as UNDISPUTED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.
Kevin | 12:56 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I am a BYU grad and huge cougar fan but I was cheering for the UTE's every minute of this game. They have an excellent offense and defense and showed the nation that football can be played in the Rockies too. I am sick of the elitists that think that real football is only played in the SEC, Big 12 and PAC-10 and I live in Austin!. I cheer for the Utes every game but one a year. They deserve all the praise they receive and more. I think they should be ranked number 1 after this season, but you know that can't happen. I hope this win acts as a catalyst to the BCS bigots to get the program right. We need a playoff series to prove the real national champions.
TucsonUte | 1:22 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
The Utes came to play and Whittingham and his staff were prepared to not only meet the challenge of an SEC team but were able to beat them in their own backyard. Sabin in the postgame press conference looked a bit overwhelmed by the whole thing and now I realize why so many people dislike the man. He barely gave the Utes credit for the win and focused on his team and why they didn't win.

All those who were writing Whittingham off last season after the UNLV loss must feel like fools now. The biggest challenge for Utah is to keep it going because of losing Anderson to USU. If this doesn't help Utah in recruiting...nothing will.

I expected a Ute win and wasn't let down.

Seems like that chance came and went for BYU...sorry kiddo.

I apologize for, and am embarrassed by, my fellow cougar supporters who fail to recognize our own mediocrity at this time. 1984 was a long, long time ago, and has no bearing on the quality program located to the north. Right now they are better, and consequently, we've become laughable. Hopefully, our players will recognize this and become hungry, and our fans will be mature enough to appreciate Utah's achievements...and the cash they brought to our pathetic conference for distribution...hey, maybe we can buy some TV time or buy out the horrible leadership that have brought us this wonderful TV deal...just kidding! Congrats Utes, Go Cougs!

What an insightful post. I am so impressed with the sportsmanship coming from BYU.

True red | 1:40 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Thanks BamaProud, you're a class act, unlike Glenn who removed all doubt about his IQ. BTW, four years ago many Glenn-types were spouting that illogic, but here the Utes are again.

Anti-trust issues are real. The big programs use unfair recruiting advantages that entice the best talent since they can only play for a NC if they go to a program in the BCS conferences. They steal the best coaches away, since they can only get a NC if they're in a BCS conference. At least there was a shot pre-BCS, a la 1984 for the Y. Utah has proven twice that busting the BCS isn't enough. Yeah, there's a natural pecking order with big tradition programs, they don't need any extra protection from the BCS.

However, busting the BCS does enhance our ability to recruit higher caliber athletes, since it proves that the program has staying power and not what Glenn wishes were so.

The rivalry is better when both teams are at high levels and everything is on the line in November.

I remember sometime in the last week or so a zoobie bragging about a wager he made(fairly large might I add!)on the post boards. I wonder how that turned out for him?

The fact is BYUs NC happened a long time ago with a different coach and staff, different players, and different criteria for a NC. Based on results (current!) BYU didn't go to a BCS bowl. Weren't even close! Utah did! Utah was the MWC representative. Will BYU get there? Possible! What Utah did last night was place the MWC in a more competitive arena. BYU will have to step it up to be able to play in that arena. Frankly I would like to see it happen. It will make for a better competitve season for both Utah and BYU. Here is my vote for a national Championship for Utah!! GO UTES #1!!!
Congrats! | 1:54 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
From a die hard BYU fan I say Utah deserves to get NC consideration. I was way wrong on this game and wrong about the Utes. I actually feel better about BYU after seeing what Utah did to Bama. Ute fans...please, you officially don't have to feel second class to BYU. Both are great programs and Utah has performed on a big stage and dominated. You belittle your program's greatness when some of you start with the "this team is better than the 84 BYU team" stuff. Different teams, systems, and eras. The rivalry will be back in 09' with two great coaches who are 2-2 against each other. This is a time to celebrate your teams greatness. I am still very proud of a BYU team who has won 32 games in 3 years. Utah fans (and I know they are the immature minority) who are belittling BYU after this win come across as having an inferiority complex. There is no need for that as Utah has two top 5 finishes in 5 years. Congrats to all the classy Ute fans and go MWC!
BYU and Ute fans unite | 2:01 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
How about all of us fans who are mature ignore the morons on both sides who are trying to tear the other program down. Who knows what will happen next year or 20 years from now. BYU dominated in the 70's and 80's. Since then the rivalry has been about dead even. Save it for rivalry week. Right now the MWC looks great with a 13-0 Utah, 11-2 TCU, and 10-3 BYU.

Utah does not belong in the National Championship game. THey would get their butts kicked by either team there. But hats off to them they should play texas for third place and have another good game.
Maybe people might pay attention to the MWC next year cuz they will be awesome with the returning teams.

Class act Kyle and company. Too bad some of your fans have no class (per the comments on this web site). Ditto for some of the BYU fans. Get a life. UTES deserve at least a tie for National Championship. BCS stinks - when will we have a playoff? UTES would likely take it. Congrats!
TRUE BLUE | 2:14 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
As a loyal BYU alum, I was so proud of the Utes last night. I knew Coach W when he was a player at BYU. I couldn't help but think how proud "big Fred" would have been. Utah is the class of the MWC at this time. Congratulations ........maybe this will bring about a long-needed national playoff. The BCS has egg on their faces!!!
Fredd | 2:18 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
BYU finished at 10-3 and dropped it's last two does. BYU unfortunately was the weak child of the MWC and proved to be the boat anchor in our quest for respect. Utah may have brought that repect back but mark my words, BYU is done and 1984 is a long time ago. Utah and TCU will move on to bigger and better ventures and BYU will be left battling the cellar dwellars of the MWC for a meaningless conference title and bowl game in sin city.
Urban Fantasy | 2:22 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Can you even imagine what Urban woulda done with this team! They easily woulda been in the National Championship game.

RE: Go Coug! | 2:23 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Yes I agree lets force the BCS to give a automatic bid to BYU every year because they proved it in 1984 that they deserve it.

With all to respect to alot of BYU fans that posted here this is for the Zoobs that think just because they play FLS and OK that they will win the title. According to ESPN, "The Utes have had a strong enough season that they should earn a top-15 ranking in the 2009 preseason poll, and that's one of the first steps toward sneaking into the top two spots in the final BCS standings."

Step back BYU it's little brothers time to shine, so get out of our spotlight and be happy with the 3 million dollar check we give your program.

Congrats to Utah for their win over Alabama and a 13-0 season. You have a right to be pleased and proud.
Utes #3 | 2:35 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Last night was incredible. You still have to put Texas ahead of Utah. Texas thumped Oklahoma and played the toughest schedule of anyone in the top ten. There only loss was a last second score by Texas Tech. Leading up to the Tech game UT had to beat three top ten teams and then play Tech in Lubuck. UT beat both teams to play for the Big XII championship and should be in the national championship game.

Until last night the only team Utah played that is worthy of note was TCU, a team creamed by Oklahoma. Utah deserves #3, Texas deserved a title game.
Klueth | 2:38 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
With Max and Austin back I would think BYU would enter next season ranked right around 10-12 and with some luck 8-10. Utah lost it QB and two coordinators, Utah will be lucky to be ranked in the top 20. Utah had a great year but it is one and done, it was a novelty. You have paved the road for BYU next year and yes we have the chance for a second national championship. Yewties, can you say NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP? I know we can!
How? | 2:53 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
How in the world does this forum include any references to BYU. They lost big time to Utah this year. It is a fact.

Utah did not lose this year. It is a fact. They played a big game against a team that had been ranked number one in the BCS for 4-5 weeks. It is a fact. Look it up.

The Utes were 9-10 point underdogs. The announcers were "shocked, shocked, shocked" at how things went. It is a fact.

Utes: you deserve number one. But lacking the press, the numbers for the media market, and the fact that you have those great looking uniforms, means that you will never get there from here.

And that is a fact.
Agree with Unite | 3:05 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I couldn't agree more with the earlier post calling for Ute and Coug fans (and BSU, TCU, et al) to come together - if we'd stop the in-fighting, we could probably put together a movement to bring down the BCS.

The whole "Barry Switzer bunch" reminds me of baseball before Jackie Robinson. There were the major leagues and the negro leagues. To Switzer, Utah, BYU, etc should not be on the same field with the so-called big boys, USC, Oklahoma, Florida, Texas, etc.

Yeah, now we know why - they might get embarrassed.
Take note Coug Fans | 3:06 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
That is how you win a big game against a big time football program. Utes have beaten the most BCS schools of any non-bcs school, but is that right, because I'm starting to think that Utah is a BCS school because they are always playing in BCS games!
Cougar Fan | 3:16 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Congrats to the Utes they made us all proud. I read some of the comments on here and I'm embarrased by some of the BYU fans comments, I'm not a Ute lover by any means but I call it as it is and give respect when respect is deserved. The Utes made the conference proud and deserved to be there it goes to show how good the mtn west was this year. I personally didn't think Utah was the best team in the conference and neither was BYU it was TCU, but that shows how deep it was, Utah had a great team this year and deserves to be where they are. Again congrats.
Go away Zoobs... | 3:19 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
You have been reassigned to the childrens table.

We'll stil look out for our lil' brother when we move on to the Big 12 along with TCU but there is only so much we can do. Take our 3 million and try and build a decent program so football does not get axed all together as we will enjoy giving you a look into the big time and keep the rilvary game ever three years or so.
Brian | 3:26 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
If BYU would have had a chance at a BCS bid, well they would have blown the game by having a fireside instead of game film or practice. Coach Wit knows how to get it done and I gotta tell you it is not a fireside. Quest for perfection knows one color and it is RED!
BYU Fan | 3:29 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
Congratulations to the Utes. As strange as it felt rooting for the team up north, I was proud of their performance against a "power house" SEC team. I do agree that TCU was probably the strongest team in the conference, but that only underscores the strength of the MWC and the fact that we deserve an automatic bid to the BCS . . . or the system needs to change. With a 13-0 U of U program and UT and USC being left out of the NC in favor of 2 other one loss teams, maybe there will be enough uproar to change the system.
Zelph the White Lamanite | 3:37 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
And so it came to pass that BYU's self righteousness was not acceptable in mine eyes and I am also exceedingly wroth with their arrogance (believing in vain that they represent Me) by condemning themselves with their air of smug moral superiority, which is an abomination in mine eyes.

Yea, verily I say unto them, that unless the Cougs repenteth exceedingly in sackcloth and ashes, and render due respect to their blessed rivals from up north, I will utterly refuse to listen to the vain petitions offered in behalf of the Y. Yea, unless they repenteth, I will continue to curse the Cougs with fumbles, turnovers and gassy bowels that will cause them to fail against their opponents and will cause them to be thrown in the depths of humility before me.

And to the Utes I say: well done thou diligent and sincere athletes! -verily, thy efforts and merits have not gone unnoticed from up high -that is why I have smiled upon thee and lifted thee up.

GO UTES!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, that's some serious junk you're smoking! Isn't that against the Honor Code?

Yes, we lose Gary Andersen, but who was the DC before him? Some dude named Kyle, you might know him as a finalist for national coach of the year.

And yes, we lose Andy Ludwig, but feelings are mixed on whether that's a curse or a blessing. (I am curious to see who Kyle hires as OC - maybe Mike McCoy from the Carolina Panthers?)

Next, while we lose a bunch of starters from the offense, there are capable, experienced backups at every position, and we return 4 of 5 on the O-line.

To top it off, we lose a whopping TWO starters from the defense that shut down Alabama's vaunted rushing attack (not to mention your Cougars passing attack).

Unfortunately, even with Hall and Collie coming back, based on the Cougars falling flat on their faces in their last two games, I'll be shocked if they are ranked higher than 20 next preseason.

No, we can't say National Champs, but that was 24 years ago and the system's totally different now. Can you say 2-0 in BCS games? I know we can! Go Utes!!
USU Fan in New Orleans | 3:39 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
What an experience to be at the game!! The only time in the game that anyone sat down was during timeouts. For those of us that were there in the stadium, it was a thrill to say the least. Alabama fans have been so gracious!

1. Utah have many many classy loyal fans
2. BYU has many classy loyal fans
3. Utah does have some mean and hateful fans.
4. BYU is funded by the tithing of the church, so they should (if they are not hypocrites) be the most tolerant, gracious and most humble fans. The really bad news is that many are not. Many are intolerant, hateful and clueless! As a member of the church I am often embarrassed by BYU fans.
5. If your a BYU fan and you were not rooting for Utah, then more than likely you are as described in #4 above.
6. Utah was amazing and I was proud to be from the State of Utah as I have ever been.
7. Football is just a game!! If you feel anger and resentment then you need to set some new priorities in your life!

Hilarious! | 3:42 p.m. Jan. 3, 2009
I can't believe there are some BYU fans who are so deluded as to honestly believe, even after totally falling apart against Utah and Arizona, that somehow they still belong in the same discussion with Utah.
