This makes me very sad. I grew up surrounded by people who hated Mormons. I never understood how people who were supposed to be Christian could hate so deeply. Thankfully, not all were hateful.

By their fruits ye shall know them.

Sadly, Focus on the Family was a strong partner in the Yes on 8 campaign, and yet has had a long history of strong disagreement with the LDS Church. Shirley Dobson, wife of James Dobson, refused to allow a Mormon to pray at the National Prayer Breakfast several years ago, just to name one example. I do not think FoF represents all evangelicals by any means, but this more extreme branch is a rather unfortunate one for the Church to be aligned with. Tony Perkins holds the same view of Mormons as the Dobsons, and I am truely mystified as to why the LDS Church would partner with such narrow-minded, bigoted groups whose contracted definition of Christianity leaves out many devoted and faithful diciples, including Catholics and Mormons.
Alaskan LDS Christian | 2:55 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is just about the only Christian church to put Christ top and center on their official home page.
Frankly, I am glad Glenn Beck's interview has been pulled from the Focus on The Family website. Glenn Beck deserves better, having his interview hosted on a TRUE Christian website, on a site were Christ- like love seeks no boundaries. Not on some bigoted rag called Focus on the Family.
For anyone to claim the LDS are not Christian, is like a 5 year old looking into a mirror and denying the chocolate he sees on his face.

The LDS believe Christ! We follow him and obey his commandments. There is no doubt, based on our fruits.
1 jn 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

There are more websites against this church (per capita) than any other, and believe it or not, it's a testimony to it's truthfulness. Why? Because Satan knows this IS the true church of Jesus Christ and he is throwing everything he has against it.
Are there any LDS sites against others? NOT!

It is a very sad commentary on Focus on the Family. Why are they so critical of a religious group that has done no harm. They do damage to their cause when they take this stand. Is their effort really to focus on the family? Why don't we all concentrate our efforts on making the world a better place instead of miniminzing what we can do by becoming so narrow minded. In their pettiness they have certainly damaged their cause.
Anti-Romney | 4:43 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
And you wonder why Romney had such a tough time among "Christians." I don't understand why Mormons think the Republican Party likes them so much... they don't. You can be a socially conservative Democrat and still be a good Mormon (just ask Gov Huntsman who definitely isn't fiscally conservative, therefore more of a socially conservative Democrat).
Angelino | 4:59 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Once again the religious bigotry of the Evangelical movement shines forth. I have seen this type of behavior time and time again in Los Angeles.

Once, I asked a young man if he were Catholic. He loudly exclaimed, "NO, I am a Christian!" When I responded that Catholics considered themselves very Christian, he said they certainly were not, but were idol worshipers.

On another of many occasions, an Evangelical exclaimed that Jews and the Chinese were dammed to Hell forever. I asked if this were true for the many who were good and pure in heart. He said, if they were pure in heart then they would accept Christ on this earth. I exclaimed that many millions had never even had the opportunity to hear of Christ. His explanation of this was that if they were worthy, they would have heard of Christ and accepted him on this earth. He stated this emphatically in the presence of a very sweet and lovely elderly couple, who happened to be Jewish.

This is only a small exapmle of such bigotted hate. I have been apalled at the extremely narrow attitude of so many evangelicals.
Atlman | 5:07 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
As a Roman Catholic I have felt the scorn the Evangelical Right has for both Mormons and Cathlics. I find it almost amusing that we as Catholics and Mormons have our little spats occasionally ( Parish Records, valid baptism questioned by each side) and yet in the end we tend to get along a lot better with each other. I have never felt the need to be accepted by the Evangelical Right.(I take their scorn as a badge of honor.) I don't think LDS members should either. As one observer said years ago the truth lies between the Catholics and the Mormons. The Evangelicals don't have a leg to stand on. Let's just let James Dobson and his group keep excluding everybody and hold our heads high. Glenn Beck was brought back from the grave by adhering to the LDS Faith. In Dobson's eyes, he would have been better off dying. How very sad to harbor so much pompous self-righteousness. Again, Let us Catholics and Mormons keep our little spats and let the Evangelical Right fade into obscurity. Happy New Year!

It's so sad that so many lies are told about the Church. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people out there that don't take the time to find out the truth. They just listen to people who feel threatened by the Church.

It's really sad that these people think they have a right to define what a Christian is. They have managed to craft a narrow definition that excludes just about everyone but themselves. In actuality, anyone who believes in Christ as the Son of God and tried to follows his teachings IS a Christian.

There are no people on the face of the earth that have greater love for Christ or that honor and try to follow him more. As Christians, it is our mission to love these people anyway and try to be patient with them. The Church is the stone rolling forth from the mountain to fill the world...and it will regardless of who ties to stop it.

I have read Brother Beck's book and would highly recommend it. Glenn has taken his conversion to the gospel very seriously and is trying to help others find Christ and change their lives.
elwood | 5:15 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
It's to bad that we are still looked upon as non christians. I guess this will not end until the second coming.

As far as Mr. Beck's article being pulled from Focus on the Family's web site, it is sad to say that when they need our help they come running to us but when the battle is won "good bye" and your still a cult.

I am LDS and and do not agree with very little of Mr. Becks polidical views. I think if he belives he knows the answers to every problem in this country why does he not run for president. Problely does not pay enough. With his million dollar contract with Fox News he can tells us how hard the times are. Ya right.

I give James Dobson credit for running the story in the first place but caving in to such ridiculous pressure is cowardly. I no longer have any respect for him and my James Dobson books are going in the garbage.
JPratt | 6:23 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
It is unfortunate but typical of our times. The evangelicals know that if they do not treat us this way, they will lose members of their church. It is out of fear that such things happen. If anyone seeks out the truth, it will be found--and if they continue calling us non-Christian, then they aren't seeking truth. It's that simple.
I had no | 6:27 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
idea the Dobson was such an extremist and biggot.
Beck will | 6:29 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
have a field day with this. This is hilarious. Dobson is about to be exposed as a cowardly bigot.
Jon | 6:32 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Don't worry time will heal this great divide. The whole Prop 8 was just a small piece of the iceberg. Many evangelicals will, in time, come around to the realization that we are both on the same side and our differences are really not that extreme. Unfortunately, there are others that will never come round and they are just as bad, if not worse since they claim to be Christian, as many in the anti prop 8 crowd.
Remember, it's not worth getting upset about it-that just encourages us to be just like those we find so hypocritical. Elder Hales' talk, "Christian Courage" from the last General Conference is an excellent guide in how we should respond to this bigotry and ignorance.
Just Ed | 6:35 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Such a pity. Glenn Beck and Focus on the Family seem to be made for each other. Or, should I say, they deserve each other.
UtahRez | 6:39 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Good grief JB, just because Focus on the Family disagrees with LDS theology does not mean they hate Mormons. You and others who draw this ridiculous conclusion really need to quit bearing false witness. You sound like the homosexuals who were protesting a while back.
Cinaed67 | 6:38 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
You know...it's really a shame that even Christians alike can't get along!!! Do you really think alienating yourselves in such a manner really makes YOU look like a Christian? I think not!!! The LDS people believe in and worship the same Christ as everybody else! There is only one!!! With all the hate and persecutions that Christians are starting to have to endure, it is a sad day when others that were so committed to the Prop 8 process now turn their backs on those that help achieve the same goal and outcome that ALL people of faith desired!!!
When can we agree to disagree and still love and accept each other despite our differences!?! SHAME on 'Focus on the Family'! I have been a very strong supporter of your site its messages but your actions of self-righteousness and your own style of religious bigotry and persecution are unacceptable and out-right rude!!! Put a mirror up in front of yourself...you too have become a part of this cycle of hate! Who made you Lord Judge of all?
Check yourself out....you are in the wrong!

Disappointed in California!

I am not a big or even a little fan of James Dobson. But as a Christian who grew up in Utah I totally see his view on this. Mormonism is a cult. He does not wish to promote Mormonism and that is his call.

For those who do not like their faith called a cult, just look up the definition and see if Mormonism fits. Simple test. Look up the definition, and see if Mormonism fits the definition.

For more excitement, go to the library nearest you and look up older books that explain, define, etc. cults. You will find Mormonism listed.

Why? Check it out and you will know why. We only have so much space here on the web.

PS -- Dobson does not represent me. Christ does.
Economic reasons | 6:51 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
Sadly, Dobson sees his relationship with Mormons as more than theological differences. He views the Mormons as a threat to his paid ministry if the Mormons siphon off some of his followers -- for him it's a matter of economic survival.
Grammaticus | 7:00 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
leo, we should align with such groups when we do have a common cause because it has been commanded.

"And now, verily I say unto you, and this is wisdom, make unto yourselves friends with the mammon of unrighteousness, and they will not destroy you. Leave judgment alone with me, for it is mine and I will repay."

When I was in the military, I spent many hours working for Chaplains of various faiths. There are alot of people out there with genuine love for the Lord. There are some who use their faith to hate, that is sad. When I found those people, I asked myself, what would the Savior have done if he met them (and they did not know he was the Savior). I know that love changes everything, it will overcome hate and envy. It is our job to love those who hate us. The Lord will take care of everything else. It is sad tho that people have to be mean.
Hope you all had a good Holiday, and have a great new year.
Barbara | 6:59 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
My son in law, who grew up Catholic in Salt Lake City, thinks Mormonism is a main-stream religion. He says he grew up surrounded by Mormons who hated him. We are active in the Church, we don't hate him, or deny him respect as an ex-Catholic. He has no religion at all so maybe if he were trying to qualify to pray for Mrs. Dobson, since he dislikes Mormonism, she might allow it. Personally, I never heard of the Dobsons, but I do know who Glen Beck is, and God bless him for standing up for the faith as he does. As a media figure he might have a lot to lose just addressing religion at all.
Oh, and by the way, how was this cult able to influence so many voters in California on Prop 8? A myriad of opinions out there. Some so-called Christians think Jesus was just a great teacher, too. The Dobsons have their agency to think whatever they please and should allow Mormons the same courtesy.
My sister in law thinks Mormons are going to hell. I am older than she, so I guess I'll be waiting at the door when she shows up.
JaneBond462 | 7:20 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
For Pete's sake JB & Leo, turn down the hyperbole and stop being so sensitive!

There ARE deep doctrinal differences between the LDS church & evangelical Christianity, mainline Christianity and Roman Catholicism. The LDS church believes it is the one, true, restored church & all others are false. So, why would you want LDS to be considered Christian and associated with faiths the church believes promote a false doctrine?

Theological differences do NOT equal hate or bigotry! Substitute Prop 8 proponents and gays for LDS & evangelicals in your comments and you sound just like the hyperbolic opponents of Prop 8 who equate support of it to homophobia & bigotry.
Kevin | 7:23 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
And you guys thought supporting Prop 8 would buy the evangelicals' friendship and respect. It didn't. And when Prop 8 is nullified, like the marriages your efforts temporarily nullified, hopefully you will realize the moral and financial error of your ways.
Cliff in AZ | 7:26 a.m. Dec. 27, 2008
How often we quote D&C 121:41-46!
Some parts of this wonderful admonition are sometimes forgoten in our dealings with our conservative Christian brothers and sisters:
". . only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned;
42 By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile . . . showing forth afterwards an increase of love toward him ... 46 Let thy bowels also be full of charity towards all men, and to the household of faith, and let virtue garnish thy thoughts unceasingly; then shall thy confidence wax strong in the presence of God; and the doctrine of the priesthood shall distil upon thy soul as the dews from heaven.
46 The Holy Ghost shall be thy constant companion, and thy scepter an unchanging scepter of righteousness and truth . . . "

These verses should be our handbook in dealing with our detractors.

By pulling this article in spite of strong approval for the LDS Church's support of Prop 8, Dobson has shown that he's less of a Christian than the Mormons he condemns as heretics. He's showing his true colors with these actions.

The song, "God moves in mysterious ways" comes to mind the following scripture.

DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS Section 1.

1 Hearken, O ye people of my church, saith the voice of him who dwells on high, and whose eyes are upon all men; yea, verily I say: Hearken ye people from afar; and ye that are upon the islands of the sea, listen together.

2 For verily the voice of the Lord is unto all men, and there is none to escape; and there is no eye that shall not see, neither ear that shall not hear, neither heart that shall not be penetrated.

How sad! A religious group has discriminated against another group whose beliefs they disagree with. I am SO surprised. We really need to make religion a MANDATORY part of our government. How would we do that? Hmm...I've got it! We'll just have a national vote. Which ever religion wins the POPULAR vote will become the official religion of the USA. At that point all other religions will be banished. After all the PEOPLE would have spoken. I can't believe how smart and enlightened I am.

To Leo: I believe that the reason the Church aligns with these groups is 1. In order to achieve worthwhile goals that we all agree on, 2. To open some doors and give these people a chance to see that they are wrong about their bigoted views toward the LDS Church. The Church is doing the right thing by rising above it and going forward. I just hope these people will eventually be able to see their error and open their hearts and minds to the Gospel message.

When Christ was on the earth he organized a church. When He did there were several Jewish religions all who claimed to be the "true" church. You had the Pharisees and the Saducees to name a couple. Jesus organized His church and named it the Church of Jesus Christ. Do you think He named it the church of John the Baptist, or the church of Martin Luther, or the universal church? No of course not, He named it after Himself, because it was His church. Today, same story. If He has a true church on the earth, wouldn't He name it after Himself? There is only one church that bears His name. Today His people and followers are called a "cult" just like the pharisees & saducees believed Christ and His church were of the devil.

Nothing unites like hate. Don't tell me what you are against, tell me what you are for. The LDS faith joined forces with Focus on the Family in their Prop 8 fight, and now that that is over, both groups can go back to hating each other. My questions for those of the LDS faith is simply this: how does it feel to be hated? You sowed seeds of hate in your Prop 8 fight, and now you have reaped the whirlwind.

I was also saddened by the removal of the article about Glenn Beck's book "The Red Sweater" because he is a "Mormon." I am also a Mormon and the Church is NOT a cult. I have contributed financially to Focus on The Family on some of the issues we have both believed in. I will no longer be a contributor to FOF. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) has brought me more joy, peace, happiness, knowledge than any other church or institution. It has taught me what true Christianity is and has given me a desire to love and serve others and to follow in the footsteps of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I have studied many churches and they all have some good in them and I never consider myself better than anyone else. I would just hope that others would find out what the "Mormon Church" really believes before they speak against it. Those who know the least seem to say the most.

Please understand that they are just practicing their religion and following their faith. God has told them that the LDS/Mormon faith is an abomination in the eyes of God. It is the work of the Devil, who has deceived these souls and will drag them down to hell with their evil ways. They are just doing the Lord's work and if you have a problem with their bigotry, you should take it up with the Lord, Jesus Christ.

Sound familiar? What goes around, comes around.

Interesting. James Dobson just thanked the LDS Church for it's christian stand on Prop. 8. So he's glad when the church supports his views but disowns them when he could lose followers (money). I think I know who belongs to the false religion.
