LOL!! It can't be any miserable then 48-24 and counting the number INTs Utah D picked off.
Just being in the Sugar Bowl game is priceless, something I don't expect any BYU fan to understand.
How ever you count it, over 60% of Utah's wins in the series came before more than a handful of college football fans owned a color television.
Talk about living in the past.
Since 1962, BYU is 28-19 versus Utah; 25-12 since 1972.
I will be smiling all the way to NO. BYU had the chance of knocking that smile off my face but they didn't, see scoreboard 48-24, instead the smile got wider.
So thank you BYU and thank you TCU for not being able to stop us on our way to 12-0.
Yaaaawn! Who cares? Its like me arguing that my 49ers are better than the Patriots this millennium using their games from 1962 as proof.
Really?!?
Not bitter? What makes you-the-not-so-bitter-Couger-fan think Utah will be bad for next several years?
Congrats BYU for once again finishing with 10 wins and all you have to show for it is again a trip to Vegas.
The Crimson Tide coach said his team was the only one "that plays in a real BCS conference that went 12-0."
Utes are just happy-happy-joy-joy to be getting slaughtered by a real team.
Utes, if you're happy and you know it clap your hands...
Utah had never accomplished ANYTHING on a national scale before 1964, and it took them another 30 years before they accomplished anything else.
In their entire history, Utah has only been ranked in the final polls 4 times (5 times, if you include 2008):
1964 - AP unranked, Coaches #14
1994 - AP #10, Coaches #8
2003 - AP #21, Coaches #21
2004 - AP #4, Coaches #5
2008 - currently #7 in both polls
Utah has only had four 10 or more win seasons in their history.
Except for a string of bowl wins over mostly mediocre teams, Utah really hadn't done anything on a national scale in football until their breakthrough 2004 BCS team.
Utah is still waiting to win its first national player award.
With their 2004 and 2008 teams, Utah is on the cusp of national recognition, but, their best finish in the polls, to date, is #4/#5, just barely ahead of BYU's Cotton Bowl winner, #5/#5.
See 2003 and 2004 for 10 plus wins.
When BYU gets into the BCS twice better yet just once...then give Ute fans all the trash-talk about how #4 Bama is going to roll all over Utah but make sure that year Utah didn't roll all over BYU 48-24.
Talk about grasping at straws. No sane Ute will argue that BYU was the better program in 70s-80s. BUT 90's was a toss up and now Utah is the best non-BCS program.
If you have any facts to prove me wrong then please provide them.
We won't get slaughtered because unlike BYU we actually have a defense.
So Coug how does it feel to get slaughtered by the only real Utah football team?
Meanwhile the Utes will give us a good showing in NO and could pull of the upset of the bowl season, keep their mouths shut this summer and finish 12-0 again in 2009!
BYU: Vegas Bowl fixture
Thats is all you really need to know. When BYU fans get down, they start bringing up the past. You know, 1984 and now even arguing the 1800's. No one cares who won in 1976. I can tell you who won in 2008.
And I can tell you that every single BYU fan out there would rather be playing Bama in the Sugar Bowl than the Vegas bowl.
So, keep trying to bring up stuff that doesn't matter anymore(like Detmer won the Hiesman or whatever) while I focus on yet another BCS game. BYU and its fans wish, long for, yearn, desire, and crave to have Utah's season. Keep trying to say that you don't.
Just so you Cougars know.....12-0 & Sugar Bowl DOES feel good.
I think fans from both sides need to chill out a little bit, BYU had a good season, Utah had a great one.....that's it, nothing more to fight about.
9-10 head-to-head (largest BYU win, 31 points)
BYU/Utah PF 490 PA 490
7 10+ win seasons
10 conference championships
8 Top 25 finishes (highest #5/#5)
Utah - 146-79-0 (65%)
10-9 head-to-head (largest Utah win, 31 points)
BYU/Utah PF 490 PA 490
4 10+ win seasons
5 conference championships
5 Top 25 Finishes (highest #4/#5)
Except for head-to-head, which is almost dead even, BYU leads in every significant category since 1990.
btw, head-to-head is 10-10 for the last 20 meetings
and still no national respect.
That's all you need to know.
No. 6 Utah defeated No. 11 Cincinnati: 40,858 (73 percent) to 15,389 (27 percent).
In the Second Round:
No. 3 Texas defeated No. 6 Utah: 31,268 (86 percent) to 5,223 (14 percent).
Utah's football program is lightyears ahead of where they were before the mid 90's, but, even Utah's 2nd best team ever isn't viewed nationally as being competitive with Top 10 teams.
"Meanwhile the Utes will give us a good showing in NO and could pull of the upset of the bowl season, keep their mouths shut this summer and finish 12-0 again in 2009!"
Yep, sure...
in a land of Leprechauns and Unicorns there Dwight.
Meanwhile the Utes get creamed in the 1st quarter, and the game is out of reach before the second quarter begins. They make everyone forget about Hawaii, keep their yappers barking like the little puppies thry are, and finish the season 6-6 in 2009.
But at least they get a 10 win season out of their basketball team, Drca providing the cheap shots, and Neville putting up 8 points a game, continuing Utah Basketball's renaissance of mediocrity.
10-2 three years straight, 2 conference losses in 3 years, 2/3 last MWC championships, players returning, a depleted Utah team, 10-0 in basketball (Utah 9th in conference at 5-4)...
It's a rosy future for the Cougars.
MWC finishes
BYU - 3, 2, 1, 1, 3 = average 2.0; 2 championships
Utah - 1, 4, 3, 3, 1 = average 2.4; 2 championships
Top 25 finishes
BYU - 3
Utah - 2
10+ Win seasons
BYU - 3
Utah - 2
Head-to-head
BYU 2
Utah 3
Records
BYU 4-8, 6-6, 11-2, 11-2, 10-2 = 42-20
Utah 12-0, 7-5, 8-4, 9-4, 12-0 = 48-14
slight edge to Utah because of head-to-head and two BCS invites, but the BCS factor is over-rated.
As we saw with Hawaii last season, where you finish in the Final Rankings is more important in judging national prestige, than whether you play in a BCS game.
Just ask Hawaii, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and the ACC.
nevermind.
Utah doesn't bother setting any real goals; that way, if they drop back to another string of 7-5, 8-4, 9-4 seasons, they won't have to worry about being ridiculed for failing to achieve their goals.

Utah can play with Alabama and can present problems for them that the Tide wouldn't see in SEC opponents. TCU is a lot better team the BSU, they just need to go out and prove it. GO MWC!!
Nobody can deny that BYU has had a very successful football program. I am a Utah fan and I know this is true. They have competed well in the arena the MWC/WAC has been allowed to play.
However, before you beat your chest too hard take into consideration your statement you made regarding Utah. "Except for a string of bowl games OVER MOSTLY MEDIOCRE teams, Utah hasn't really done anything on a national scale in football until their 2004 breakthrough season." You forget that although BYU has played some college football names in bowl games they have not beaten anyone with too high of a profile:
1. Michigan (6-5. Not championship caliber!)
2. Kansas St: 3rd place in Big 12 and 9-3. (I feel this was BYU's best team ever and could have competed with almost anyone).
3. SMU
4. WSU
5. Missouri
6. Colorado
7. Oklahoma
8. Oregon
9. UCLA
*Even then OK and OR are the only blowouts.
Utah has not played anybody better, but they have beaten who has been placed before them. It is a shame the 2004 Utes did not get a chance to show who they were. Pitt was an insult!
Brian Johnson is going to be cool under pressure. His abilities have taken a quntum leap since the TCU game. The Utes have a good shot if they execute their game plan and aren't too tired by the 4th quarter.
and to the guy that said there will be 90% Alabama fans to Utah's 10%, It will be more like 75/25. (So there)!
"How's that National Respect treating you down in Vegas? How's it feel to be #4 on the Non-BCS depth chart, right behind TCU and just ahead of Ball State?"
Not real bad. #16, and a win against Arizona will have BYU in the top 10-15 next year.
Some years are like that.
While that is considered a "failure" season by Utah fans "this particular year", it would have been a dream year for Utah 48 out of the last 50 years.
It would have kept Fassel, McBride at Utah, and would have also kept the Utah fanbase from calling for Kyle's head the past three years.
Utes, I really hope you enjoy you chance in the national spotlight this year. BYU fans are sort of used to it.
I just hope you can recover from your beatdown on National TV as you slide back into the Ute "rut" of mediocrity.
You have my support this year. Feel free to see me if you have any questions. My suggestion, win, lose, blown out, or creamed, grab the microphone and speak to the crowd. That way they forget what they saw and will be enamored by your sheer "Kyle-ness". It works well for me. Nobody knows my guys are 5-4. Really, that's right. 5-4. See, nobody notices.
And Roll Tide (OK, sorry, I'm desperate for a win. I had no idea Southwest Baptist was soooooo very good. Who knew?)
Much Respect,
Coach Boylen
OVERALL PICTURE: what are you getting at, exactly? If you are saying Utah has not achieved the same success as BYU there are many who would argue differently. Utah football all but disappeared for a while until McBride took over. BYU had a hiatus during the Crowton years. What is your point?
BYU fans need to cheer for Utah in this bowl game. If you want your team to recieve recognition then you need your conference, in this case your rival, to win this game.
GO UTES!! MAKE US PROUD!
The myth of the SEC will be crushed by the time Oklahoma buries Florida in the "championship" game.
I don't know if it was you who responded to my first post or not. If it was you then we'll see you on the field, mister. Or you can come to my seats and say hello (section 618 row 23 seats 1-4)
Regarding your second post you are absolutely right. Around these parts people call it the best rivalry that nobody knows about. But if you really want see blood and guts, go to a church basketball game, it makes this stuff look like love fest.
Exactly what National spotlight are BYU fans used to; keep in mind that 1984 was 3 decades ago! You just can't stand it that the Utes are the class of not just the MWC, but all Non-BCS teams. I'd define a "rut" as not being able to better yourself. Kind of like getting to the crappy Vegas bowl how many years in a row now? When your Cougars accomplish what the Utes have twice for the first time you can come back on here and use your calm demeanor and it would mean something, now it means nothing.
Please realize that most of the Bama fans who will be attending the game are not of the holier-than-thou variety that all of these sportswriters write about. They want you to believe there is a sense of entitlement and arrogance in Tuscaloosa. Yes, we love our football and yes we expect to win every game. We do not however take it for granted! Maybe we did in the past, but we've been through enough in the past decade or so to know that every win is hard fought. We appreciate how special it is to have a history rich in tradition.
We are your typical hospitable southerners. We enjoy a smash mouth football game and will hug your neck when we say goodbye (win or lose). We expect common courtesy, but will give you as much as we get if you get in our face.
We are all so excited to be back in the hunt after such along dryspell. The Sugar Bowl will be awesome.
Hope to see you in NOLA...
Roll Tide!!
Utes, you had a great season and I have to admit I'd love the Cougars to be in a BCS bowl this year - and to do it twice in 5 years is a feather in the Utah program's cap. But the 2008 BYU Cougars wouldn't have been able to stand up to the Tide, and I'm not sure the 2008 Utes will be able to do so either.
I'd be happy with a Utah win that sticks it in the face of the "only-BCS-conference-schools-are-worthy-of-national-attention" crowd. Or maybe an even better scenario: Utah loses on the last play of the game on a blown call by the official. BYU shares in the conference money, the "moral victory" gets the MWC some national respect, and Ute fans still go home angry. (Yes, I still harbor some resentment for the time I was hit in the head by a thrown apple in Rice Stadium when I was 7 years old)
