Utahn's robbed again | 4:49 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
This franchise in Utah was deemed too great a risk for taxpayers to fund but our legislators did it anyway. So now what are the taxpayers chances of recoveing out investment funding and how many years is there left to pay the bonding we gave them? And what is TRAX going to do with the extra mileage of track laid out to the stadium? Another White Elephant for Utah tax payers.
Re: Utahn's robbed again | 8:05 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
You know this article is about the arena football team, not the soccer team, right?
Re: Utahn's (sic) | 8:18 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
Huh? Focus: it is the Blaze, not RSL. Learn to read before you type.

Your blatant ignorance is why I supported and still support RSL!

Re: Utahn's robbed again | 8:31 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
hold on now...the Utes are BCS busters again! RES is money well spent! No white elephant there -- what are you talking about? GO UTES!
Utah Stars anyone? | 9:19 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008

I guess rides the trax to the Delta Center to watch
Jazz only the Blaze...get real. Trax is used by thousands everyday for work and other things not just arena football games.

It is better to pull back for a season and regroup than have the season start and the league go bankrupt in the middle of it.

At least the Blaze produced tax revenue, unlike some social welfare projects the state funds.

Wake up fella.... | 9:20 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
....Sorry to lose the Blaze.

But RSL and MLS are far from going anywhere. Even with the sluggish economy...expansion and stability are happening.
Ute Basketball | 9:46 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
Did the Utes cancell their mens basketball program this year as well?
re: wake up | 9:53 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
get back to me when the MLS reaches 22 years in business and we'll compare.

The problem with AFL is using other people's stadiums. Everyone in sports knows that the ticket sales and concessions are the money makers. AFL had to pay high rent and didn't get concession sales.

That equals *poof* bad buisiness model, and gone.
Re: Re: Wake up | 10:44 a.m. Dec. 16, 2008
I'd love to compare. Today if you like. MLS is 15 years strong, and growing. Many teams have their own soccer specific Stadiums, and as mentioned before, this is the key to a successful league. RSL will be able to start making money now instead of giving it to Rice Eccles.

Again....sorry to hear that the AFL is suspended/ needing reorganizing.

Thanks for your enlightening comments regarding soccer. Not only was your comment thematically redundant, but it was also grammitcally incorrect. A "real man" would know to use "worst" instead of "worse".

RSL more boring live then golf on TV!

Why do feel your sport merits an $85 million taxpayer underwriting? I don't like soccer. I happen to like Scottish Highland Games, and so do a lot of my friends. Does that mean that we get millions of dollars for our hobby, too? Seems logical, since an ability to financially sustain ourselves does not appear to be a qualifier.

New (insert league here) business model: Ask the government to build a (insert building/stadium/arena here) especially for your (insert league or sport here). The organization can keep gate receipts and concessions. They can also sell suites and and sponsorships all on the taxpayers dime.

Oh yeah...RSL already did that...

I think that a Team Handball League would be really good. Team Handball is Huge in Europe both Male and Female. It is fast paced and I found it interesting, at least as interesting as Ice hockey.

Small Quick people can play it and you do not have to weigh 300 pounds or be 7' Tall.

I liked Arena Football. The Hawaii Team folded a couple of years ago. They just did draw enough fans and the overhead was high. However so did AAA Baseball and about any other Sport played at the pro level.

Supply demand and peoples willingness to attend games. With Games and Games and Games on Cable TV. Fans are never with out a Game.

A lot of things that where are No More, prime example would be the WPBA. The WBA would also be gone if it where not for NBA Money.

I think the WPGA will be a Small Shadow of its self in a few more years. Even with better looking more talented and attractive players and lower scores. Wie, in case any one missed it Got Her Playing Card.

Mismanagement is doing them in.

Wow, thanks for the tip on all that "taxpayer money" RSL took from the community. I'm glad to see you are a regular visitor to Salt Lake City hotels, and occasional visitor of Salt Lake County hotels. I mean, you must be, if you insist that your money went to the building of Rio Tinto Stadium. That's the only "taxpayer money" that was used on the project.

Next time, read the legislation behind the Transient Room Tax before you spout off.

the league has been in trouble for at least 3 seasons. ticket revenue doesnt cover player salaries, why the blaze president says its the current "economic climate" is beyond me. he knows this model has been broken for years and he hasnt helped with his over inflated ego and paycheck. thanks for nothing Jones.
MLS???? | 8:44 a.m. Dec. 17, 2008
I thought this an article about the Blaze??? I've been a season ticket holder for all three years and also the Utah Warriors for two years prior to that. I will miss them this year but would rather see them take a year off to restucture then to be gone for good. Also for you MLS fan. MLS was founded in 1993 but didn't have it's first game untill 1996. It took year years to get thing up and running. So as far as games and making money it's only been 12 years not 15. Also most MLS team operate in the RED only a hand full of them make a profit.
OK, MLS then. | 1:54 p.m. Dec. 18, 2008
Since your comment asking why it was being discussed continued to discuss it, I'll note that there's a lot less to that stat than meets the eye. MLS, founded 13 years ago, still has 8 original teams (9, if you count the Cleveland Browns-esque return of the Earthquakes) in their original market. The AFL has only 4 teams that have made it that long, only about a quarter of the league (and none that have been around since the beginning).
MLS II | 1:57 p.m. Dec. 18, 2008
Being renters vs owners is part of that, but so is the nature of the two products. AFL is a cotton-candified version of football (they had an indoor version of soccer too, which started out strong, faded quickly, and puttered around about as long as the AFL has)--the first taste is sweet, but there's little to sustain you over time. Over time, most of the teams started off looking promising, but gold old fairly quickly. The common theme among the exceptions is winning a championship fairly early in existence, and following that up with playoffs almost every year.

Major League Soccer is more like rye bread. A whole lot more basic and less processed, an acquired taste for many, but once you get used to it there's just more "there" there.
